Primary Intracranial Ewing Sarcoma With an Unusual Presentation: A Case Report

Primary extraosseous intracranial Ewing sarcoma (ES) is an extremely rare disease, limited to the pediatric population, that primarily originates in the skull. Here, we present an unusual case of adult Ewing's sarcoma originating from the brain parenchyma. The 50-year-old male patient visited our hospital with severe headache lasting 3 weeks. MRI presented 6.1×6.2×5.2 cm sized heterogeneously enhanced mass containing peritumoral edema in the right frontal lobe. The patient underwent right frontal craniotomy, at which time the gray and red masses adhered to the surrounding brain parenchyma. The mass was completely resected using neuronavigation and electrophysiological monitoring. Histopathological examination revealed ES-compatible findings of small round cell tumor and CD-99 positive membranous immunostaining. Next generation sequencing revealed translocation and fusion of EWSR1 and FLI1, consistent with a confirmed diagnosis of ES. Consequently, the patient underwent postoperative radiotherapy. The present case revealed adult primary intracranial ES arising from the frontal lobe. Although its etiology remains poorly understood, intraparenchymal ES should be included in the differential diagnosis of parenchymal brain tumors.

Primary Intracranial Ewing Sarcoma With EWSR1-FLI1 Gene Translocation Mimicking a Meningioma and a Multidisciplinary Therapeutic Approach: A Case Report and Systematic Review of Literatures

Ewing sarcoma and peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/pPNET) is an undifferentiated malignant tumor that is most prevalent in children and young adults and often radiologically mimics a meningioma. A 38-year-old female patient visited our hospital with complaints of right-sided tinnitus, right hemiparesis, and imbalance. She underwent preoperative imaging and was subsequently diagnosed as having a meningioma on the petrous ridge. After partial resection, EWSR1-FLI1 gene fusion was confirmed, and she was diagnosed with ES/pPNET. The tumor was successfully treated using a multidisciplinary approach of adjuvant chemo- and radiotherapy. This case is noteworthy because it is an extremely rare case of an intracranial ES/pPNET, and it is worth sharing our clinical experience that the tumor was successfully treated through a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach even though complete resection was not achieved.

Primary Intracranial Ewing Sarcoma Invading the Superior Sagittal Sinus with EWSR1-FLI1 Gene Fusion and EWSR1 Gene Mutation: A Case Report and Literature Review

BACKGROUND

Primary intracranial Ewing sarcoma (ES) is an extremely rare intracranial malignant tumor, mostly occurring in children and adolescents. Because of its rarity, the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and treatment strategies of primary intracranial ES are still unclear.

METHODS

The purpose of this study was therefore to report a case of primary intracranial ES, whose molecular features included both EWSR1-FLI1 (EWS RNA binding protein 1- Friend leukemia integration 1) gene fusion and EWSR1 gene mutation. It is worth noting that this is the first reported case of ES invading the superior sagittal sinus and mostly causing occlusion. At the same time, there were polymorphisms of four drug metabolism-related enzymes in the tumor. Subsequently, we conducted a literature review to characterize the clinical features, imaging findings, pathological features, treatments, and prognoses of primary intracranial ESs.

RESULTS

A 21-year-old female was admitted to the hospital with headache with nausea and vomiting for 2 weeks. An MRI showed a 3.8 × 4.0 cm large heterogeneous mass in the bilateral parietal lobe with peritumoral edema. The tumor invaded the superior sagittal sinus and mostly caused occlusion of the middle segment of the superior sagittal sinus. The mass was successfully removed using a neuromicroscope. Postoperative pathology indicated a primary intracranial ES. High throughput sequencing (next generation sequencing) showed that there was EWSR1-FLI1 gene fusion and EWSR1 gene mutation in the tumor, with polymorphisms of four drug metabolism-related enzymes and low tumor mutational burden. Subsequently, the patient received intensity modulated radiation therapy. The patient has signed an informed consent form.

CONCLUSIONS

The diagnosis of primary intracranial ES depended on histopathology, immunohistochemistry staining, and genetic testing. At present, total tumor resection combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy is the most effective treatment. We report the first case of primary intracranial ES invading the superior sagittal sinus and causing middle segment occlusion, accompanied by EWSR1-FLI1 gene fusion and EWSR1 gene mutation.

EXTRASKELETAL EWING'S SARCOMA IN PEDIATRIC PATIENT RARE CASE: A CASE REPORT

This study reports a 12-year-old male was referred to our institute with a mass in the right ear. The mass was rapidly growing thus needing an immediate surgical attention. MRI revealed an exophytic, hyper vascular mass extending to the right jugular fossa and, the middle ear, and to the right acoustic meatus, suggestive of a right glomus jugulare tumor. Angiography showed a hypervascular lesion with robust feeding from the superficial temporal artery and right occipital artery. After surgery, the patient rapidly recover and he was discharged home on the 5th day after surgery. Three months after surgery, the lump reappeared and grew rapidly as before.

Case report: Primary intracranial EWs/PNET in adults: Clinical experience and literature review

Introduction

Adult primary intracranial Ewing sarcomas (EWs)/primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are extremely rare, with only 30 patients published before us. The imaging features and treatment strategies of primary intracranial EWs/PNETs are unclear due to its rarity. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features, imaging findings, treatment, survival analysis, and prognosis of adult EWs/PNETs, and a systematic review was conducted based on the patient we treated and published literature.

Case description

A 19-year-old male patient suffered from head pain due to an accidental fall on a motorcycle that occurred more than 10 days before going to the hospital, and underwent computed tomography (CT) examination; it was found that the left temporo-occipital fossa was occupied. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was recommended to understand the nature of the lesion, and the result showed that it has a high probability of being a meningioma. He underwent surgical removal of the mass under general anesthesia, and surprisingly, postoperative pathology revealed EWs/PNET. The disease has a high degree of malignancy, and the patient developed multiple metastases throughout the body 5 years after surgery.

Conclusion

Primary intracranial EWs/PNETs in adult patients are rare, of which imaging findings should be considered as one of the differential diagnoses of meningioma, hemangiopericytoma, and malignant triton tumor. Larger solid-cystic masses with septum-like enhancement may be relatively specific imaging findings of intracranial EWs/PNETs. The prognosis of primary adult intracranial EWs/PNETs is poor. Radical tumor resection combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy is currently the main and possibly the most effective treatment method.

Malignant spindle cell tumors of the posterior fossa in children: case series and review of management

OBJECTIVE

The WHO Classification of Tumours of the Central Nervous System (2016) classifies nonmeningothelial malignant spindle cell tumors involving the extraaxial tissues of the posterior fossa as melanocytic tumors and malignant mesenchymal tumors (sarcomas). The objective of this study was to conduct a review of the literature pertaining to the management strategies of posterior fossa malignant spindle cell tumors in the pediatric population.

METHODS

The authors performed an institutional search of their pathology database for patients younger than 18 years of age who presented with posterior fossa malignant spindle cell tumors. A literature review was also performed using the PubMed database, with "posterior fossa" or "spindle cell tumors" or "Ewing sarcoma" or "high-grade" or "spindle cell sarcoma" or "leptomeningeal melanocytoma" as keywords. The database search was restricted to pediatric patients (age ≤ 18 years). Parameters reported from the literature review included patient age, tumor location, presenting symptoms, treatment modalities (resection, chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy), leptomeningeal spread at or after the time of treatment, and follow-up length and resulting outcome.

RESULTS

The authors report 3 rare cases of posterior fossa malignant spindle cell tumors, including Ewing sarcoma in a 13-year-old male; high-grade spindle cell sarcoma, not otherwise specified in a 10-year-old male; and primary leptomeningeal melanocytoma in a 16-year-old female. All 3 patients underwent resection and radiotherapy and either chemotherapy or targeted immunotherapy. At the last follow-up, all patients were alive with either resolution or stable disease.

CONCLUSIONS

A review of these 3 cases and the existing literature support managing patients with intracranial malignant spindle cell tumors with multimodal therapy that can include a combination of resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy or immunotherapy to prolong progression-free and overall survival.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the cervix diagnosed during pregnancy: a rare case report with discussion

Background

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a relatively rare malignant small round cell tumor, and the occurrence of cervical PNET during pregnancy is extremely rare.

Case presentation

A case of pregnancy complicated by PNET at our hospital was reported. A 19-year-old pregnant woman presented to the hospital due to multiple instances of vaginal bleeding during the first and second trimesters. She was initially considered for threatened abortion but was ultimately diagnosed with cervical PNET. No standard treatment plan has been developed for pregnant women with this tumor. After completing the necessary examinations, doctors cooperated with the patient and her family to develop a surgical treatment plan. The patient recovered well after surgery, but she refused radiotherapy and chemotherapy. After nearly 3 years of follow-up visits, the patient is alive with no signs of recurrence.

Conclusions

PNET during pregnancy is a rare but complex condition. It is necessary to devise an individualized treatment plan according to gestational age. Timely surgical treatment can significantly prolong the survival time of patients but may also lead to fetal loss and the inability to carry a pregnancy.

Primary intracranial Ewing sarcoma/ peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor, an entity of unacquaintance: a series of 8 cases

PURPOSE

The purpose is to highlight the primary intracranial (meningeal-based) occurrence of Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET).

METHODS

This report is a collation of clinicopathological features of eight cases of molecularly and clinicoradiologically confirmed primary (non-metastatic) intracranial (non-osseous) meningeal ES/PNET.

RESULTS

The age range was 1 to 33 years with a median age of 9 years. Male to female ratio was 0.6:1. All patients were diagnosed on the debulking surgical material (gross total resection, 2 cases; subtotal resection, 6 cases) and showed primitive embryonal histomorphology with diffuse membranous CD99 immunoexpression and EWSR1 gene rearrangement by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Seven of them showed a typical FISH pattern of split signals with break-apart probe, while one showed an unusual signal pattern of loss of green signals. EFT-2001 adjuvant protocol was followed along with focal radiotherapy (RT) in all cases (except case 8, full course of chemotherapy could not be completed). Two cases had local recurrence-one of them died of disease recurrence before the administration of further treatment.

CONCLUSION

This series adds non-osseous intracranial site to the list of uncommon sites of occurrence for ES/PNET and more importantly emphasizes the need to be considered in a differential list of primary intracranial primitive embryonal tumors before embarking as primary central nervous system (CNS) embryonal tumor, NOS.

Primary Intracranial Ewing Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor Mimicking Meningioma: A Case Report and Literature Review

Background: Primary intracranial Ewing sarcoma (ES)/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pPNETs) are extremely rare malignancies, which arise in children and adolescents, with only 9 cases reported in patients over 30 years of age. Due to its rarity, MRI features and treatment strategies for primary intracranial ES/pPNETs remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical features, imaging findings, pathological characteristics, different diagnoses, treatment, and prognosis of cerebellar liponeurocytoma in adults.

Case Description: A 55-year-old female was admitted to the hospital with memory decline over 1 month, which aggravated in the last 2 weeks. MRI showed a 4.3 × 6.5 × 3.5 cm heterogeneous large mass in the left frontal lobe with mild peritumoral edema. The mass was successfully removed under neuronavigation and electrophysiological monitoring. The entire mass was removed, and postoperative pathology indicated an ES pPNET diagnosis, with an EWSR1 gene rearrangement. Subsequently, the patient underwent disciplinary radiotherapy.

Conclusion: The diagnosis of primary intracranial ES/pPNETs depends on the comprehensive consideration of histological examination, immunohistochemical analysis, and genetic detection. Gross tumor resection combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy might be the most beneficial treatment.

Primary and Metastatic Intracranial Ewing Sarcoma at Diagnosis: Retrospective International Study and Systematic Review

Intracranial Ewing sarcoma (EwS) is rare and publications on primary or metastatic intracranial EwS are minimal. The aim of this study was to describe incidence, clinical behavior, treatment, and factors associated with outcome in patients with primary intracranial EwS or patients with a primary extracranial EwS and cerebral metastases at diagnosis. We reviewed all patients with primary or with metastatic intracranial EwS at diagnosis registered in the International Clinical Trial Euro-E.W.I.N.G.99 (EE99). In total, 17 of 1435 patients (1.2%) presented with primary intracranial EwS; 3 of them had metastatic disease. Four patients (0.3%) with primary extracranial EwS presented with intracranial metastatic lesions. The 3-year event-free survival (EFS) was 64% and overall survival (OS) was 70% in patients with a primary intracranial EwS. Local control in patients with primary intracranial EwS consisted of surgery (6%), radiotherapy (RT) (18%), or both modalities (76%). Univariate analysis showed that patients < 15 years of age had significantly better outcome (EFS: 72%; OS: 76%) compared to those aged above 15 years (EFS: 13%; OS: 25%). In conclusion, primary intracranial EwS and extracranial EwS with cerebral metastases at diagnosis is rare, yet survival is comparable with local and metastatic EwS elsewhere in the body. Age and stage of disease are important prognostic factors. Besides chemotherapeutic treatment, local control with surgical resection combined with RT is recommended whenever feasible.

Spinal Ewing's Sarcoma Presenting as an Epidural Collection: A Rare Presentation of a Rare Entity

Rare entities are difficult to predict. They are considered last rightly, to expedite treatment and alleviate symptoms quickly. Rare presentations of rare diseases form a particularly difficult section of diagnoses that are not only impossible to predict but difficult to recognize, diagnose, and treat. Often the dilemma is to, investigate thoroughly saving time but financially burdening the patient and hospital, or, to investigate in gradual increments taking more time and effort, especially in rare cases where prolonged hospitalization and suffering occurs before the diagnosis is reached. This approach, however, wastes critically important time, which, especially in neurological compression, may often lead to irreversible deficits. This dilemma is admirably demonstrated in this case report of spinal Ewing's sarcoma. A young female presented to us with recurrent high cervical epidural collections presenting as compressive myelopathy. She underwent repeated decompressions, and the collection was misdiagnosed as tuberculosis, which was treated without empirical evidence, leading to significant irreversible disability. Finally, when she came to us, the histopathological assessment was done to reveal the diagnosis. Ewing's sarcomas, and indeed the whole gamut of small-round-cell malignancies, are great imitators. They are known to exist in the skull base mimicking schwannomas, chordomas, germinomas, pituitary adenomas, and even epidermoids and occasionally extend to the vertebral bodies and the cranio-vertebral Junction (CVJ) leading to instability and neurological compression. Here, they mimic vertebral tumors, discitis, infective abscesses, and even myeloma. Predictably, such an entity is diagnosed last, and diagnosed late, leading to bad consequences for the patient. Such was the fate of our patient. The report emphasizes the diagnostic dilemma and presents the need to use protocols for diagnosis and treatment, even in rare cases, to effect the best possible outcomes for patients. The use of a thorough diagnostic and management algorhythm prevents deeper and sinister disease processes from being missed.

Ewing Sarcoma With Emphasis on Extra-skeletal Ewing Sarcoma: A Decade's Experience From a Single Centre in India

INTRODUCTION

The diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma family of tumours (ESFT) is challenging, especially in adults and in extra-skeletal or visceral location. Several morphologic mimics with varied treatment options and prognosis confer diagnostic dilemmas. Application of ancillary diagnostic modalities in surgical pathology in clinical routine has enabled accurate diagnosis of ESFT in bone, soft tissues, and viscera.

AIM

The study aims to assess the clinicopathological features including molecular test results of ESFT with emphasis on sex, age, and location, especially extra-skeletal soft tissue and visceral location.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Data of clinicopathological, molecular tests (wherever performed), diagnosis rendered in 302 ESFT over a decade from our centre were reviewed. Statistical comparison of skeletal and extra-skeletal tumours with reference to age and sex was done using SPSS package. The P value of <.05 was considered significant.

RESULTS

The cohort included 302 ESFTs with 49% skeletal and 51% extra-skeletal tumours. Thigh was most common site among skeletal tumours; chest wall, paraspinal location, and retroperitoneum among soft tissues (39.4%); and kidney, ovary, and cervix among visceral tumours (11.3%). Fluorescence in situ hybridisation for EWSR1 gene rearrangement was positive in 54 patients and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction in 19 patients. Predominance of male sex, younger age and location in extremities among skeletal tumours and lack of gender predilection, higher age and axial location in extra-skeletal tumours were noted, which were statistically significant. Molecular tests were performed more frequently in extra-skeletal tumours, especially in visceral tumours to establish the diagnosis.

CONCLUSIONS

The study showed statistically significant differences in the age, sex, and location between skeletal and extra-skeletal ESFT. The increased percentage of extra-skeletal tumours especially in viscera was attributed to the increased awareness and availability of ancillary techniques.

Sensitive and Specific Detection of Ewing Sarcoma Minimal Residual Disease in Ovarian and Testicular Tissues in an In Vitro Model

Ewing sarcoma (EWS) is a common pediatric solid tumor with high metastatic potential. Due to toxic effects of treatments on reproductive functions, the cryopreservation of ovarian tissue (OT) or testicular tissue (TT) is recommended to preserve fertility. However, the risk of reintroducing residual metastatic tumor cells should be evaluated before fertility restoration. Our goal was to validate a sensitive and specific approach for EWS minimal residual disease (MRD) detection in frozen germinal tissues. Thawed OT (n = 12) and TT (n = 14) were contaminated with tumor RD-ES cells (10, 100, and 1000 cells) and EWS-FLI1 tumor-specific transcript was quantified with RT-qPCR. All contaminated samples were found to be positive, with a strong correlation between RD-ES cell numbers and EWS-FLI1 levels in OT (r = 0.93) and TT (r = 0.96) (p < 0.001). No transcript was detected in uncontaminated control samples. The invasive potential of Ewing cells was evaluated using co-culture techniques. After co-culturing, tumor cells were detected in OT/TT with histology, FISH, and RT-qPCR. In addition, four OT and four TT samples from children with metastatic EWS were tested, and no MRD was found using RT-qPCR and histology. We demonstrated the high sensitivity and specificity of RT-qPCR to detect EWS MRD in OT/TT samples. Clinical trial: NCT 02400970.

Cranial Ewing Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors: A Retrospective Study Focused on Prognostic Factors and Long-Term Outcomes

Purpose: Cranial Ewing sarcoma (ES)/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pPNETs) are rarely reported because of their extremely low incidence, and the current understanding of these tumors is poor. The purpose of this study was to illustrate the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of cranial ES/pPNETs and to discuss prognostic factors by survival analysis.

Methods: A total of 31 patients who were pathologically diagnosed with cranial ES/pPNETs between 2000 and 2019 were enrolled in this study. To identify which parameters were associated with higher progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates, univariate and multivariate analyses were performed.

Results: The mean follow-up period was 24.8 months (range, 1–109 months). Eighteen (58.1%) patients had local recurrence and seven (22.6%) patients had distant metastasis. The results of the univariate analysis suggest that the extent of resection and adjuvant radiotherapy are potential prognostic factors for PFS and OS. Adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with OS (P = 0.027) but not with PFS (P = 0.053). The multivariate analysis revealed that the extent of resection and adjuvant radiotherapy were independent prognostic factors for both PFS and OS. In addition, metastasis was an adverse prognostic factor for OS.

Conclusions: Surgical management plays a crucial role in the treatment of cranial ES/pPNETs, and gross total resection should be striven for whenever possible. Post-operative radiotherapy is highly recommended to improve PFS and OS. This study also confirms that metastasis is an adverse prognostic factor for cranial ES/pPNETs.

Treatment Outcomes and Prognostic Factors of Patients With Primary Spinal Ewing Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors

Purpose: Primary spinal Ewing sarcoma (ES)/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pPNETs) are extremely rare, and the current understanding of these tumors is poor. The authors aimed to illustrate the clinical characteristics of primary spinal ES/pPNETs and to discuss prognostic factors by survival analysis.

Methods: A total of 40 patients who were pathologically diagnosed with primary spinal ES/pPNETs between 2000 and 2018 were enrolled in this study. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated by the Kaplan–Meier method to identify potential prognostic factors. Factors of p ≤ 0.1 in the Log-rank tests were subjected to multivariate analysis by Cox regression analysis.

Results: The mean follow-up period was 23.8 (range, 2–93) months, and 24 (60.0%) patients had local recurrence and 11 (27.5%) patients had distant metastasis. The 1-, 2-, and 5-year PFS rates were 57.7, 30.4, and 9.5%, respectively. The 1-, 2-, and 5-year OS rates were 74.8, 50.7, and 12.2%, respectively. The univariate analysis suggested that resection mode, postoperative Frankel score, adjuvant chemotherapy and adjuvant radiotherapy were potential prognostic factors for OS and PFS. However, after these factors were subjected to multivariate analyses, only adjuvant radiotherapy and resection mode remained as independent prognostic factors.

Conclusions: Total en bloc resection can significantly improve PFS for primary spinal ES/pPNETs and adjuvant radiotherapy was a favorable factor for PFS. Total en bloc resection and adjuvant radiotherapy considerably improve OS for patients with primary spinal ES/pPNETs.

Clinical Features and Long-Term Outcome of Primary Intracranial Ewing Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors: 14 Cases From a Single Institution

OBJECTIVE

Primary intracranial Ewing sarcoma (ES)/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pPNETs) are extremely rare, and only a few studies have reported >4 cases of this disease. The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical features, treatment, and outcome of primary intracranial ES/pPNETs.

METHODS

The clinical data of 14 patients who had been surgically treated from February 2003 to November 2017 and in whom immunohistochemical staining results had confirmed the diagnosis of primary intracranial ES/pPNETs were retrospectively analyzed. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to estimate the survival rate and the median survival time (MST).

RESULTS

Gross total resection (GTR) was achieved in 7 cases, and subtotal resection was performed in 7 cases. During follow-up, 10 (71.4%) patients had local recurrence and 3 (21.4%) patients had distant metastasis. The overall 1-, 2-, and 5-year survival rates were 78.6%, 47.6%, and 19.0%, respectively. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that postoperative radiotherapy was a significant prognostic factor for longer MST (P = 0.034). GTR and radiotherapy with or without adjuvant chemotherapy yielded the highest 2-year survival rate (100%). Three patients who underwent GTR, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy had the highest 2-year survival rates (100%) and the longest MST (48 months).

CONCLUSIONS

Primary intracranial ES/pPNETs have an aggressive clinical course, with a high tendency for local recurrence and distant metastasis. Radiotherapy plays a significant role in improving the survival of patients. GTR combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be the most beneficial treatment modality.

Primary Intracranial pPNET/Ewing Sarcoma: Diagnosis, Management, and Prognostic Factors Dilemma-A Systematic Review of the Literature

BACKGROUND

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a malignant bone tumor that is most commonly observed in the long bones, the pelvis, and the chest. Primary intracranial localization is extremely rare.

OBJECTIVE

In the aim of identifying the prognostic factors of this rare localization, we conducted a systematic review of the literature for patients with primary intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor/ES.

METHODS

A complete MEDLINE search was undertaken for all articles reporting data for primary intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor/ES. We divided the patient population into 2 groups: group I, patients who were free of disease; and group II, patients who died or had uncontrolled disease at the last available follow-up. We conducted a comparative statistical analysis of data between the 2 groups.

RESULTS

A total of 48 patients were included in the review. There were 32 patients in group I and 12 in group II. Fifty percent of tumors in group II and only 16% of tumors in group I were infratentotorial (P = 0.03). Signs of bone involvement were observed in 19% of patients in group I and 54% in group II (P = 0.03). Total removal was accomplished in 29% of patients in group I and in no patients in group II (P = 0.03). Radiotherapy was performed in 73% of patients in group II and 81% in group I (P = 0.43). Chemotherapy was administered in 36% of patients in group II and 74% in group I (P = 0.03).

CONCLUSIONS

Infratentorial localization and the presence of bone involvement were associated with poor prognosis; Surgery seems to be a predictive factor of prognosis; radiotherapy and chemotherapy must be performed whenever the tumor is not totally removed.
