Disappearing Negative Valence: A Content Analysis of HPV Vaccine Newspaper Coverage in China (2000-2018)

News coverage of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine grew rapidly in China in 2016 when the vaccine was approved. Drawing upon framing theory, the present study analyzed the content of 491 Chinese newspaper reports on the HPV vaccine published between June 2000 and December 2018 to investigate what and how information and valence about the vaccine was relayed to the public. The results indicated that, while the Chinese media failed to provide comprehensive and accurate information about HPV and the HPV vaccine, they showed a positive evaluation of the HPV vaccine demand and market. In addition, there was a decline in negative coverage after the vaccine was approved. This study extended the literature on HPV vaccine coverage by combining issue-specific framing and valence framing, considering the Chinese-specific vaccine market for presentation and the value of such products, which is rare in previous studies. Practical implications of the findings for health promotion were also discussed.

Factors of early breastfeeding initiation among Filipino women: A population-based cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Early breastfeeding initiation (EBI) within the first hour after birth has the potential to reduce neonatal mortality. However, the prevalence of EBI still falls short of the 70 % target set by the WHO for 2030. Limited research has been conducted on this issue. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors of EBI in the Philippines.

METHODS

This study is a secondary analysis of the data from the Philippine National Demographic and Health Survey (PNDHS) in 2017. Women survey participants aged 15 to 49 (n = 3750) who had given birth within the two years prior to the survey were included in this study. A p-value < 0.05 was used to define statistical significance when identifying the factors associated with EBI using hierarchical logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS

Women who were more likely to practice EBI were those from the Cordillera Administrative Region, who read newspaper/magazines, and delivered infants at 2 or later birth order. On the contrary, women from Central Luzon, CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon provinces), Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao; who listen to the radio at least once a week; and give birth through cesarean section were less likely to practice EBI.

CONCLUSION

Channeling breastfeeding messages through printed mass media and provision of specialized breastfeeding support to mothers with cesarean section delivery may help in reducing the barriers to early breastfeeding initiation. Targeted interventions and strategies that promote breastfeeding practices, particularly among primigravida women and in regions with lower rates of EBI contribute to increased rate of optimal breastfeeding.

Study of impacts of education, open-access medical publishing, and internet on women's health in China

The researchers' aim to quantitatively study the impacts of education, health expenditure, Internet, mobile phone, and open-access articles in medical science on women's health in China. We found that there are very strong significant negative correlations between the data of women's mortality rates and female school enrollment (p≪0.01), whereas there are strong significant negative correlations for open-access papers in eight disciplines of medical science, individuals using the Internet, and mobile cellular subscriptions (p≪0.01). The first principal component explains 96.8%, 96.6%, and 99.6% of the variation in the mortality rate of female infants (p = 0.002 < 0.01), females under-5 (p = 0.003 < 0.01), and female adults (p = 0.002 < 0.01), respectively. There is a similar relationship between open-access medical papers and women's health. The above results could be helpful to interdisciplinary audiences (patients, practitioners, and policymakers) to develop strategies for the effective implementation of knowledge on women's health (how to disseminate knowledge more effectively in the whole society).

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Regarding Zoonotic Risk in Wildlife Trade, Southern China

Current wildlife trade practices in China lead to significant interactions between humans and animals and drive the emergence of zoonotic diseases. The at-risk behaviors, knowledge, and attitudes that influence health-related behaviors in relation to animal contact and safety measures in the trade remain poorly understood. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among 947 adult Internet users in three provinces in southern China to assess knowledge, perceived disease risks, at-risk behaviors, and the association of these factors with other demographic factors among the target population. Few of the participants possessed sufficient knowledge of zoonotic diseases. Although most participants were opposed to the use of wild animal resources, many reported keeping wild animals as pets (30.7%) and eating wild animals (30.5%). The majority of participants (76.3%) believed the disease transmission via wildlife trade, but few connected contact with animals to sickness (18.5%) and only slightly more than half sought post-exposure treatment (54.4%). These results reveal low levels of knowledge and perceived risk regarding disease emergence from the animal-human interactions in wildlife trade and uncover the gaps in knowledge and attitudes as key challenges to the development of health behavior change interventions pertaining to wildlife trade.
