Experiences of handovers between shifts among nurses in small and medium-sized hospitals: a focus-group study

The Nursing Inter Shift Handover: A Moment of Care for Patients and Their Family Caregivers

Precedents: The transfer between nursing shifts must guarantee the quality of care for patients and their families in the hospital. This study aimed to transform the handover between nursing shifts to strengthen the care capacity of patients and their family caregivers, and improve the care capacity of nursing staff, in a Latin American university hospital. Methods: This is a Nursing Methodology Research developed in the following phases: (a) identification of the best handover practices between nursing shifts to apply them within the institutional culture; (2) diagnosis of the transfer between shifts in the hospital; (3) design and validation of the transformation proposal; (4) measurement of transfer indicators; and (5) definition of a path to improve this transfer. Results: The proposal developed focuses on the patient and their family caregiver. The proposed protocol considered the perspective of the care recipients, the nursing staff, and the best available evidence. The overall transfer rating over 10 months went from 65% to 84%. Conclusions: The adjustment to the transfer process made it possible to strengthen the care capacity of patients and their family caregivers and improve the care capacity of the nursing staff.

Effects of Communication Skills and Organisational Communication Satisfaction on Self-Efficacy for Handoffs among Nurses in South Korea

(1) Background: Although numerous studies related to communication in a nursing context have been conducted, there is a lack of research considering the effects of personal and organisational communication factors on the self-efficacy for handoffs. This study aimed to identify the impact of communication competence and intra-organisational communication satisfaction on self-efficacy for handoffs among nurses. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional research was conducted between September and October 2018. In total, 203 registered nurses were invited to participate in the study by convenience sampling from five general hospitals in South Korea. Data were analysed using SPSS for t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. (3) Results: In the final regression model, the adjusted R square was significant, explaining 24.2% of the variance in self-efficacy for handoffs (F = 22.43, p = 0.001) when the variable horizontal communication (β = 0.282, p < 0.001) was included in intra-organisational communication satisfaction. In addition, the longer the nurse's experience in the current unit and the higher the communication competence, the more statistically significant the self-efficacy for handoffs was found to be (β = 0.215, p = 0.001 and β = 0.180, p = 0.008). (4) Conclusions: To enhance the self-efficacy for handoffs, nurse managers should foster an atmosphere that allows their staff nurses to interact freely and establish specific guidelines for handoffs through mutual communication.

Workplace mobbing, group cohesion and intraindividual variables in nurses from a rural hospital in Northern Greece: A correlation study

BACKGROUND

High levels of mobbing are reported in Greek nurses, but the intraindividual and perceived group emotional correlates are little investigated.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the relationship between workplace mobbing (specifically in the nursing sector of a public rural hospital in Greece) and emotional correlates.

METHODS

Questionnaires measuring emotional aspects such as Negative Act Questionnaire - Revised (NAQ-R) for measuring perceived exposure to bullying and victimization at work, Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Overall Job Satisfaction Scale (OJS), Job Affect Scale (JAS: positive and negative subscales), Perceived Cohesion Scale (PCS), Ethical Climate Questionnaire (ECQ), and Short General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) were administered. For the analysis of the data, descriptive and parametric tests were performed through the Pearson correlations and regression for the relationship between variables.

RESULTS

High mobbing levels were reported (M = 45.93) compared to already established cutoff scores. Statistically significant positive correlations were found for NAQ-R and MBI (Exhaustion subscale) (r = .569, p < .001), NAQ-R and JAS-negative affect (r = .610, p < .001), NAQ-R and GHQ-12 (r = .280, p = .002), and NAQ-R andeducational level (r = .196, p = .033). Statistically significant negative correlations were found for NAQ-R and ECQ (r = -.323, p < .001), NAQ-R and JAS-positive affect (r = -.556, p < .001), and NAQ-R and PCS (r = -.586, p < .001). Only burnout,negative affect, and perceived group cohesion predicted mobbing measured by NAQ- R.

CONCLUSION

As mobbing and its consequences are related to specific emotional variables, these perceived individual and group indices, could be targeted in future prevention initiatives.
