The Relationship of Functioning and Life Satisfaction with Illness Management and Recovery in Patients with Bipolar Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Study

The aim of this study was to determine relationship between functioning and life satisfaction with illness management and recovery, and determinants of illness management and recovery in patients with bipolar disorder. This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 152 participants between August 2022 and February 2023. "Personal Information Form", "Illness Management and Recovery Scale", "Functioning Assessment Short Test" and "Adult Life Satisfaction Scale" were used to collecting data. In study, a positive relationship was found between illness management and recovery and total functionality, autonomy, cognitive functionality, interpersonal relationships, and life satisfaction. Gender, marital status, educational status, employment status, total functioning, autonomy, cognitive functioning, interpersonal relationships, and life satisfaction were found to be effective in illness management and recovery. Being female, single, primary school graduate, unemployed, having low functioning (autonomy, cognitive functioning, interpersonal relationships) and having low life satisfaction were found to be determinants of illness management and recovery.

Managing social networking stress: the role of self-management in reducing social media exhaustion and improving higher education employee performance

This study investigates the significance of self-management in academic staff stress management related to social networking sites (SNS). It emphasizes particularly on reducing social media exhaustion and increasing job effectiveness. The research applies the stressor-strain-outcome theory and the Smart PLS (partial least squares) analytical approach to examine data from 391 respondents. The study's goal is to provide empirical data on the efficacy of self-control management in reducing SNS stress and its effects on academic staff's psychological wellbeing and job performance. Data is collected by survey using online email platforms among academic employees, and the collected data is examined utilizing the Smart PLS approach. This approach allows for an investigation of the proposed links and their statistical importance. This research's ramifications are important for academic institutions since its results can help academic personnel effectively cope with SNS-related stress. Academic employees can better limit their SNS usage and avoid social media tiredness by promoting self-control management practices. As a result, academic employees' job performance and overall wellbeing may increase. The study's findings help to comprehend how self-management might reduce SNS stress and improve staff performance in the academic sector.

Early recognition method for patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder in community mental health care: Illness insight, self-management and control

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

To investigate how participating in the early recognition method treatment strategy affect illness insight and management, in patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder in community mental healthcare.

BACKGROUND

The current practice in mental healthcare focus on shared decision-making and self-managing capacity, but poor insight is a predictor of poor adherence and dropout. Engagement in illness management and recovery predict the treatment response.

DESIGN

Semi-structured interviews with a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach.

METHODS

We conducted 36 semi-structured interviews with 26 patients. The interviews were conducted before and after participating in the intervention using the early recognition method strategy. The analysis was based on Ricoeur's theory of interpretation: Naive reading, structural analysis, interpretation and discussion. The COREQ checklist was used as reporting guideline.

RESULTS

The experience of participating in treatment as usual and early recognition method revealed two main themes. The first theme 'patient care' describes how dialogue and collaboration increase awareness of the illness and how to gain control. The second theme 'insight and experience' describes how illness affects personality and self-image, and how insight entails control and self-confidence.

CONCLUSION

Managing life with severe mental illness is complex and challenging. However, the experience of guidance, support and collaboration between patient and nurse are essential to improve these circumstances.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

A systematic approach to the patient' symptoms, as in the early recognition method strategy, enhances knowledge of the individual patient' symptoms, both for nurse and patient. A knowledge that is significant for meeting individual treatment needs. Therefore, applying this strategy is likely to enhance collaboration and improve treatment outcome.

Evaluating the effects of social networking sites addiction, task distraction, and self-management on nurses' performance

AIMS

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of social networking sites (SNSs) addiction on nurses' performance and how this relationship was mediated by task distraction and moderated by self-management.

DESIGN

This cross-sectional study is designed to empirically test the relationship of SNSs addiction, task distraction, and self-management with the nurses' performance.

METHODS

Data were collected by conducting an online survey on nurses across the world using a web-based questionnaire developed through 'Google Docs' and distributed through Facebook from 13 August 2018 - 17 November 2018. The Facebook groups were searched using the selected key terms. In total, 45 groups were found to have relevance to this research; therefore, request was made to the admins of these groups to participate in this research and to post a link in their groups. Only 19 group admins responded positively by uploading a link of the research instrument on their respective group pages and 461 members of these groups participated in the research.

RESULTS

Results of the data collected from 53 different countries indicated that SNSs addiction results in lowering the nurses' performance. This relationship is further strengthened by task distraction introduced as a mediating variable. The results show that self-management mediates the relationship between SNSs addiction and employees' performance. Moreover, the results of the study confirm that self-management reduces the negative impact of SNSs addiction on nurses' performance.

CONCLUSION

Social networking sites (SNSs) addiction and task distraction reduce the nurses' performance, whereas self-management enhances nurses' performance.

IMPACT

This study addresses the problem of using SNSs at the workplace and its potential effect on nurses' performance. Results demonstrate that SNSs addiction reduces the performance which is further decreased by task distraction; however, self-management of nurses can enhance the nurses' performance. The research has numerous theoretical and practical implications for hospital administration, doctors, and nurses.
