Reflections on whiteness: Racialised identities in nursing

Reflections of a white healthcare professional researching ethnicized and racialized minorities: Autoethnographically explored emotions revealing implicit advantages and consequences

Health research is often embedded in biomedicine in which the goal is to remove all bias. However, this is problematic in research on social issues such as social and health inequities. Therefore, there is growing criticism of health researchers' positions as neutral and invisible. I explore research-based advantages and consequences following my positionings within whiteness, nursing and healthcare professionality. Drawing on two ethnographic studies conducted in Denmark, one among black Nigerian women working in the streets of Copenhagen, the other following patients, defined in Danish healthcare as 'ethnic minorities', in two hospitals in the greater Copenhagen area, I take the point of departure from autoethnographic emotions of 'doing good', 'discomfort' and 'denial'. As I analyse these emotions as a production in the contexts, I show the advantages and consequences of leaving my marked body unmarked. With an intersectional lens, I discuss how health researchers' risk (re)producing social inequalities in health based on for example, avoiding topics of skin colour and experiences of discrimination. Ultimately, what legitimized my access to the people in the field paradoxically also risked delegitimizing their experiences of racialized and ethnicized inequalities. This is not only consequential for the interlocutors but also for the knowledge production, since we as health researchers' risk implicitly avoiding important knowledge if we do not see our own research positionings as a racialized, ethnicized and culturalized matter. Therefore, the need for educational curriculum on racialization and anti-discrimination is imperative within the health professions and as health researchers regardless of profession or research area.

Language as a proxy for race: Language and literacy and the nursing profession

Defining a nurse as literate is disciplinary and contextual, linked to professional identity formation, and an issue impacting patient safety. Literacy and language proficiency are concepts assessed through examining skills in four pillars: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This article explores how literacy is not only a practice issue but inextricably intertwined with issues of race, equity, diversity, and inclusiveness in our profession-both in regulatory policy and classroom pedagogy. In making the argument that language is a proxy for race, three cases of language and literacy will be presented. First, the deficit discourse of multilingual student struggle is stereotyped to the presence or absence of an accent, with multilingual student needs often treated homogeneously in disregard of population heterogenous abilities. Second, regulatory policies for language testing internationally educated nurses are discriminatory with testing context bearing little relationship to the language needs of nursing practice. Third, that the myth of "one standard English" results in racist evaluation practices of student academic performance. Recommendations are made for reframing how language and literacy are viewed in nursing education and regulation of practice with a focus on acknowledgment of one's personal relationship to racial issues and emphasizing the need for a change in mindset toward racialized multilingual students and writers.

A critical race analysis of structural and institutional racism: Rethinking overseas registered nurses' recruitment to and working conditions in the United Kingdom

Language tests for overseas registered nurses (ORN) working outside their home country are essential for patient safety, as communication competency needs to be established in any workforce. We argue that the current employment of existing language tests is structurally and institutionally racist and disadvantages ORNs from non-European Union (EU) and non-White countries seeking to work in the United Kingdom. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT), we argue that existing English language tests for ORNs seeking registration in the United Kingdom are discriminatory due to the UK's racist migration policies and a regulatory body for nursing and midwifery that fails to acknowledge and understand its own institutionally racist practices.

Attending to our conceptualisations of race and racism in the pursuit of antiracism: A critical interpretative synthesis of the nursing literature

Race and racism are matters of urgent concern for the international nursing community. Recent global events have presented the discipline with an opportunity to generate and sustain long overdue discussions. However, with this opportunity comes a need to consciously attend to what we mean by race and racism, especially in the context of the nursing literature. Indeed, the development of antiracism depends on how we conceptualise race and racism; it is these conceptualisations that actively shape the scope and priorities of antiracist organising and action. The aim of this critical interpretative synthesis (CIS) is to examine conceptualisations of race and racism in the nursing literature by drawing on contemporary race scholarship. The synthesis of diverse literature is enabled through the explorative and expansive process of the CIS method. This review generates three synthesising arguments-a problem 'of' not 'for'; conceptual inconsistencies and drift; and reliance on the lens of experience-that both critique and contribute to the nursing literature. In the pursuit of antiracism, this article urges us to pay close attention to our conceptualisations of race and racism by illuminating the pitfalls that occur when our conceptualisations are inconsistent, contradictory, or simply neglected.
