A crosstalk of circadian clock and alternative splicing under abiotic stresses in the plants

The circadian clock is an internal time-keeping mechanism that synchronizes the physiological adaptation of an organism to its surroundings based on day and night transition in a period of 24 h, suggesting the circadian clock provides fitness by adjusting environmental constrains. The circadian clock is driven by positive and negative elements that regulate transcriptionally and post-transcriptionally. Alternative splicing (AS) is a crucial transcriptional regulator capable of generating large numbers of mRNA transcripts from limited numbers of genes, leading to proteome diversity, which is involved in circadian to deal with abiotic stresses. Over the past decade, AS and circadian control have been suggested to coordinately regulate plant performance under fluctuating environmental conditions. However, only a few reports have reported the regulatory mechanism of this complex crosstalk. Based on the emerging evidence, this review elaborates on the existing links between circadian and AS in response to abiotic stresses, suggesting an uncovered regulatory network among circadian, AS, and abiotic stresses. Therefore, the rhythmically expressed splicing factors and core clock oscillators fill the role of temporal regulators participating in improving plant growth, development, and increasing plant tolerance against abiotic stresses.

Basic Protein Modules Combining Abscisic Acid and Light Signaling in Arabidopsis

It is generally accepted that plants use the complex signaling system regulated by light and abscisic acid (ABA) signaling components to optimize growth and development in different situations. The role of ABA-light interactions is evident in the coupling of stress defense reactions with seed germination and root development, maintaining of stem cell identity and stem cell specification, stem elongation and leaf development, flowering and fruit formation, senescence, and shade avoidance. All these processes are regulated jointly by the ABA-light signaling system. Although a lot of work has been devoted to ABA-light signal interactions, there is still no systematic description of central signaling components and protein modules, which jointly regulate plant development. New data have emerged to promote understanding of how ABA and light signals are integrated at the molecular level, representing an extensively growing area of research. This work is intended to fill existing gaps by using literature data combined with bioinformatics analysis.

Balancing growth and adaptation to stress: Crosstalk between brassinosteroid and abscisic acid signaling

Plant growth and development are plastic and canadapt to environmental changes. In this process different plant hormones coordinate to modulate plant growth and environmental interactions. In this article, we describe the individual brassinosteroid (BR) and abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathways, emphasize the specific regulatory mechanisms between ABA and BR responses and discuss how both phytohormones coordinate growth, development and stress responses in plants. BR signaling is essential for plant development, while ABA signaling is activated to ensure plants survive stress. The crosstalk between BR and ABA, especially protein phosphorylation, protein stability control and downstream transcription control of key components of both pathways are discussed in terms of modulating plant development and stress adaptation.

Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase E modulates ABA-controlled root growth and stomatal movement in Arabidopsis

Trehalose plays important roles in plant growth and stress responses and is synthesized from trehalose-6-phosphate by trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP). Here, we show that trehalose and abscisic acid (ABA) have synergistic effects on root growth and stomatal closure. The Arabidopsis thaliana genome contains ten genes encoding TPPs and the expression level of one, TPPE, and trehalose contents increased in response to ABA. In the presence of ABA, the ABA-responsive transcription factor ABA RESPONSE ELEMENT BINDING FACTOR2 (ABF2) directly binds to the TPPE promoter to activate its expression. Genetic analysis revealed that TPPE acts downstream of ABF2, which is supported by the findings that TPPE expression and trehalose content are reduced in the abf2 mutant and that a mutation in TPPE abolished the ABA-sensitive root elongation phenotype of 35S:ABF2 plants. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in response to ABA failed to occur in tppe mutant plants, suggesting that TPPE is involved in ABA-controlled root elongation and stomatal movement by inducing ROS accumulation. This study uncovers a new branch of the ABA signaling pathway and provides a molecular basis for the role of trehalose in plant responses to abiotic stress.
