How competitive intransitivity and niche overlap affect spatial coexistence

Biodiversity in changing environments: An external-driver internal-topology framework to guide intervention

Accompanying the climate crisis is the more enigmatic biodiversity crisis. Rapid reorganization of biodiversity due to global environmental change has defied prediction and tested the basic tenets of conservation and restoration. Conceptual and practical innovation is needed to support decision making in the face of these unprecedented shifts. Critical questions include: How can we generalize biodiversity change at the community level? When are systems able to reorganize and maintain integrity, and when does abiotic change result in collapse or restructuring? How does this understanding provide a template to guide when and how to intervene in conservation and restoration? To this end, we frame changes in community organization as the modulation of external abiotic drivers on the internal topology of species interactions, using plant-plant interactions in terrestrial communities as a starting point. We then explore how this framing can help translate available data on species abundance and trait distributions to corresponding decisions in management. Given the expectation that community response and reorganization are highly complex, the external-driver internal-topology (EDIT) framework offers a way to capture general patterns of biodiversity that can help guide resilience and adaptation in changing environments.

Suitable habitat shifts and ecological niche overlay assessments among benthic Oplegnathus species in response to climate change

Climate change has had a significant impact on many marine organisms. To investigate the effects of environmental changes on deep-water benthic fishes, we selected the genus Oplegnathus and applied species distribution modeling and ecological niche modeling. From the last glacial maximum to the present, the three Oplegnathus species (O. conwayi, O. robinsoni, and O. peaolopesi) distributed in the Cape of Good Hope region of southern Africa experienced fitness zone fluctuations of 39.9%, 13%, and 5.7%, respectively. In contrast, O. fasciatus and O. punctatus, which were primarily distributed in the western Pacific Ocean, had fitness zone fluctuations of -6.5% and 11.7%, respectively. Neither the O. insignis nor the O. woodward varied by more than 5% over the period. Under future environmental conditions, the range of variation in fitness zones for the three southern African Oplegnathus species was expected to be between -30.8% and -26.5%, while the range of variation in fitness zones for the two western Pacific stonefish species was expected to remain below 13%. In addition, the range of variation in the fitness zones of the O. insignis was projected to be between -2.3% and 7.1%, and the range of variation in the fitness zones of the O. woodward is projected to be between -5.7% and -2%. The results indicated that O. fasciatus and O. punctatus had a wide distribution and high expansion potential, while Oplegnathus species might have originated in western Pacific waters. Our results showed that benthic fishes were highly adaptable to extreme environments, such as the last glacial maximum. The high ecological niche overlap between Oplegnathus species in the same region suggested that they competed with each other. Future research could explore the impacts of environmental change on marine organisms and make conservation and management recommendations.

Nitrogen and water addition alters species diversity and interspecific relationship in a desert grassland

Water and nitrogen (N) often affect plant species diversity and interspecific relationship among plant populations in global terrestrial ecosystems. However, the effects of water and N addition on plant diversity and interspecific relationship remain poorly understood. In the study, we designed a three-year field experiment in a desert grassland to assess the effect of increased water (natural +50 %) and N addition (10 g·N·m-2·a-1) on plant diversity and interspecific relationship. Our results showed that the alpha diversity was significantly changed under increased water (W), N addition (N), and water plus N addition (WN). The species richness was decreased significantly on year scales (10 %-27 %), whereas the Pielou index first increased and then decreased over three years and was significantly affected by the interaction between increased water and N addition. The total and pairwise beta diversity were significantly increased by N addition, the community was mainly caused by the turnover component after N addition, especially in 2019 and 2020 (16.6 % and 9 %, respectively). There were significant negative associations among overall populations and dominant populations under N addition, especially Stipa bungeana and Gypsophila davurica, Gypsophila davurica and Oxytropis acemose, Artemisia dalai-lamae, and Haplophyllum dauricum. Our findings suggested that plant community structure and composition changes may be due to competition for resources among dominant populations and the turnover component under increased water and N addition, which should be considered in ecosystem management.

The unimodal intransitivity-fertility relationship is not mediated by demographic trade-offs in a subtropical forest

Intransitive competition has long been acknowledged as a potential mechanism favoring species coexistence. However, its prevalence, variance along environmental gradients, and possible underlying mechanisms (trade-offs) in plant communities (especially in forests) has seldom been examined. A recently developed "reverse-engineering" approach based on Markov Chain allowed us to estimate the competitive transition matrices and competitive intransitivity from observational abundance data. Using this approach, we estimated competitive intransitivity of five dominant species in a subtropical forest and then related it to soil fertility (soil organic matter and soil pH) and demographic trade-offs (growth-survival and stature-recruitment trade-offs). In our forest plot, intransitive competition was common among the dominant species and peaked at the intermediate level of soil organic matter. Neither the growth-survival trade-off nor the stature-recruitment trade-off was positively related to competitive intransitivity. Our study for the first time empirically supported the unimodal intransitivity-fertility relationship in forests, which, however, was not mediated by the two demographic trade-offs in our plot.

Intransitivity as a dynamic assembly engine of competitive communities

Historically, those ecological communities thought to be dominated by competitive interactions among their component species have been assumed to exhibit transitive competition, that is, a hierarchy of competitive strength from most dominant to most submissive. A surge of recent literature takes issue with this assumption and notes that some species in some communities are intransitive, where a rock/scissors/paper arrangement characterizes some components of some communities. We here propose a merging of these two ideas, wherein an intransitive subgroup of species connects with a distinct subcomponent that is organized hierarchically, such that the expected eventual takeover by the dominant competitor in the hierarchy is thwarted, and the entire community can be sustained. This means that the combination of transitive and intransitive structures can maintain many species even when competition is strong. Here, we develop this theoretical framework using a simple variant on the Lotka-Volterra competition equations to illustrate the process. We also present data for the ant community in a coffee agroecosystem in Puerto Rico, that appears to be organized in this way. A detailed study on one typical coffee farm illustrates an intransitive loop of three species that seems to maintain a distinct competitive community of at least 13 additional species.

Deciphering the diversity patterns and community assembly of rare and abundant bacterial communities in a wetland system

Water microorganisms that have distinct contributions to community dynamics, including many rare taxa and few abundant taxa, are crucial to the wetland ecosystem functions. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the diversity patterns and assembly processes of rare and abundant taxa to strengthen our understanding of ecosystem function and diversity in a wetland system. The results showed that TN and NH₃-N were the most significant factors affecting the community structure in this wetland. Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) revealed that functions associated with nitrogen removal were the most prevalent metabolic pathways in samples of regenerated wetland (RW). Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that nonrare taxa exhibited more interactions with rare taxa than with conspecifics and some microbial hubs belonged to rare taxa, which might play an instrumental role in maintaining the stability of the community structure. We found that the assembly of rare taxa with a lower niche breadth was mainly governed by homogeneous selection, implying that their higher sensitivity of these to environmental disturbances and changes in TN played significant roles in community assembly of rare taxa. In contrast, the assembly of abundant taxa with higher niche breadth was dominated by stochastic processes (undominated process and dispersal limitation) indicating that abundant taxa had greater responsibility for maintaining community structure when exposed to environmental fluctuations. These results broaden our understanding of the microbial structure, interactions and ecological assembly mechanisms underlying microbial dynamics in aquatic ecosystems, which are crucial for the management of microorganisms in the wetlands.

Gut microbiomes of cyprinid fish exhibit host-species symbiosis along gut trait and diet

Teleost omnivorous fish that coexist partially sharing resources are likely to modify their gut traits and microbiome as a feedback mechanism between ecological processes and evolution. However, we do not understand how the core gut microbiome supports the metabolic capacity of the host and regulates digestive functions in specialized omnivorous fish gut traits. Therefore, we evaluated the gut microbiome of eight omnivorous fish from a single family (i.e., Cyprinidae) in the current study. We examined the correlation between host phylogeny, diet composition, and intestinal morphological traits related to the intestinal microbiome. The results indicated that cyprinid fish with similar relative gut lengths had considerable gut microbiome similarity. Notably, the SL (short relative gut length) group, as zoobenthos and zooplankton specialists, was abundant in Proteobacteria and was less abundant in Firmicutes than in the ML (medium relative gut length) and LL (long relative gut length) groups. These fish could extract nutrients from aquatic plants and algae. Additionally, we found the relative abundance of Clostridium and Romboutsia to be positively correlated with host relative gut length but negatively correlated with the relative abundance of Cetobacterium, Plesiomonas, Bacteroides, and Lactobacillus, and host-relative gut length. We also show a positive linear relationship between host gut microbiome carbohydrate metabolism and relative gut length, while the amino acid and lipid metabolism of the gut microbiome was negatively correlated with host-relative gut length. In addition, omnivorous species competing for resources improve their ecological adaptability through the specialization of gut length, which is closely related to variation in the synergy of the gut microbiome. Above all, specialized gut microbiota and associated gut morphologies enable fish to variably tolerate resource fluctuation and improve the utilization efficiency of nutrient extraction from challenging food resources.

Imitation or Innovation? Research on the Path Selection of Enterprise Performance Improvement from the Perspective of Organizational Ecology

This paper analyzes how imitation and innovation strategies of high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) impact their sustainable performances and also the whole business ecosystem with the NK-model that mimics the fitness landscape and simulates enterprises’ choice of technological strategy in response to causal ambiguity and environmental complexity. Our study yielded three findings: (1) When the imitation barriers are low, the imitation strategy of high-tech SMEs has a better effect on the performance improvement in the early stage of the operation than the innovation strategy. In the long run, high-tech SMEs exhibit innovation, which plays a greater and more lasting role in enhancing sustainable performance. On the contrary, it is always difficult for imitators to realize significant performance improvement, (2) In a simple environment, imitation strategy plays a more effective role in improving high-tech SMEs’ performance, whereas in a complex environment, innovation strategy is more conducive to discovering opportunities, and it issues from high levels of competition, and (3) more importantly, the simulation finds that the innovation of high-tech SMEs contributes more to the performance of the business ecosystem as a whole. The introduction of the NK-model simulation method in the research of technological strategies and the new scope of looking at the strategies in the business ecosystem provide new research venues for the literature.

From surviving to thriving, the assembly processes of microbial communities in stone biodeterioration: A case study of the West Lake UNESCO World Heritage area in China

Serious concerns regarding stone biodeterioration have been raised due to the loss of aesthetic value and hidden dangers in stone cultural heritages and buildings. Stone biodeterioration involves a complex ecological interplay among organisms, however, the ecological mechanisms (deterministic or stochastic processes) that determine the microbial community on stone remain poorly understood. Here, using both amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing approaches, we comprehensively investigated the biodiversity, assembly, and function of communities (including prokaryotes, fungi, microfauna, and plants) on various types of deteriorating limestone across different habitats in Feilaifeng. By generalizing classic ecological models to stone habitats, we further uncovered and quantified the mechanisms underlying microbial community assembly processes and microbial interactions within the biodeteriorated limestone. Community profiling revealed stable ecosystem functional potential despite high taxonomic variation across different biodeterioration types, suggesting non-random community assembly. Increased niche differentiation occurred in prokaryotes and fungi but not in microfauna and plant during biodeterioration. Certain microbial groups such as nitrifying archaea and bacteria showed wider niche breadth and likely contributing to the initiation, succession and expansion of stone biodeterioration. Consistently, prokaryotes were more strongly structured by selection-based deterministic processes, while micro-eukaryotes were more influenced by dispersal and drift-based stochastic processes. Importantly, microbial coexistence maintains network robustness within stone microbiotas, highlighting mutual cooperation among functional microorganisms. These results provide new insights into microbial community assembly mechanisms in stone ecosystems and may aid in the sustainable conservation of stone materials of interest.

Niche overlap and species co-occurrence patterns in carabid communities of the northern Chinese steppes

Understanding how species sort themselves into communities is essential to explain the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity. Important insights into potential mechanisms of coexistence may be obtained from observation of non-random patterns in community assembly. The spatial niche overlap (Pianka index) and co-occurrence (c-score) patterns in carabid species in three types of steppes (desert steppe, typical steppe, and meadow steppe) in China was investigated. Non randomness was tested using null models. Niche overlap values were significantly higher than expected by chance in the desert steppe, where vegetation cover is less abundant and less uniformly distributed, which possibly forces species to concentrate in certain places. In the typical and meadow steppes, results were influenced by the scale of the analysis. At a broad scale, niche separation was found as a result of species segregation among different sectors (habitats) within these steppes, but when the analysis was conducted at a finer scale, species appeared to be no more segregated than expected by chance. The high co-occurrence averages found in the meadow and typical steppes indicate that the distributions of the species found in a site may be negatively affected by the presence of other species, which suggests that some species tend to exclude (or reduce the abundance of) others. The very low c-score average observed in the desert steppe suggests that competition is not involved there. Thus, in more homogeneous landscapes (such as the typical and meadow steppes), competition might play some role in community structure, whereas spatial variation in the abundances of species is more driven by the uneven spatial distribution of vegetation in the landscape where productivity is lower and less uniformly distributed.
