The Effect of pH Values on the Synthesis, Microstructure and Photocatalytic Activity of Ce-Bi2O3by a Two-Step Hydrothermal Method

Preparation of non-polluting Tb-doped mesoporous carbon nitride photocatalyst and study on the efficacy and mechanism of degradation of antibiotics in water

Given that the biological treatment of antibiotic wastewater can easily induce resistant bacteria, the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics is considered as a better method for treating antibiotic wastewater. Therefore, the ability to remove Tylosin (TYL) and Tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solution using rare earth element Tb-doped g-C₃N₄ under simulated natural solar radiation was investigated. A series of rare earth Tb³⁺ doped mesoporous g-C₃N₄ were successfully prepared by nitric acid treatment and Tb(NO₃)₃·5H₂O samples showed significantly higher degradation efficiency for TYL and TC than pure g-C₃N₄. Leaching toxicity experiments were carried out on the catalyst using chard seeds and demonstrated negligible toxicity of the leachate from the catalyst. The structure, elemental state, optical properties, morphology, and photogenerated carrier separation of the prepared xTCN catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, UV-Vis DRS, TEM, and PL. The results show that Tb doping enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the g-C₃N₄ catalyst by narrowing the band gap while improving the light-trapping ability; The separation and transport rate of photogenerated carriers were significantly increased after Tb doping. Finally, a simple, efficient, and non-polluting Tb-doped carbon nitride photocatalyst is successfully developed in this paper.

Fabricating acid-sensitive controlled PAA@Ag/AgCl/CN photocatalyst with reversible photocatalytic activity transformation

Achieving the intelligent controllability of the photocatalyst to the surrounding environment is a very meaningful work. Here, the polyacrylic acid (PAA) modified Ag/AgCl-40/CN composite was constructed to achieve an intelligent response of pH value. PAA exhibits hydrophilic properties at high pH value, increasing the adsorption capacity to tetracycline (TC) molecules. The morphology of PAA from contracted state to diastolic state, releasing the Ag/AgCl-40/CN catalyst. In addition, PAA modified Ag/AgCl-40/CN can prevent the loss of AgCl. The g-C₃N₄ nanosheets (CN) as a carrier enhance the dispersibility of the AgCl particles. The LSPR effects of Ag nanoparticles produce more electrons acting on photocatalytic degradation. On the results of experiment, the degradation of TC by PAA@Ag/AgCl-40/CN shows an excellent degradation activity when the high pH value. Photoluminescence spectroscopy and photocurrent demonstrate that carrier separation efficiency of PAA@Ag/AgCl-40/CN is higher than CN and Ag/AgCl-40/CN. The detection of the main active substances •O₂^- and h⁺, revealing a reasonable mechanism for the PAA@Ag/AgCl-40/CN hybrid system. This work provides a procedure to obtain smart materials that can switch photocatalytic processes.

Hybridized 2D Nanomaterials Toward Highly Efficient Photocatalysis for Degrading Pollutants: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Organic pollutants including industrial dyes and chemicals and agricultural waste have become a major environmental issue in recent years. As an alternative to simple adsorption, photocatalytic decontamination is an efficient and energy-saving technology to eliminate these pollutants from water environment, utilizing the energy of external light, and unique function of photocatalysts. Having a large specific surface area, numerous active sites, and varied band structures, 2D nanosheets have exhibited promising applications as an efficient photocatalyst for degrading organic pollutants, particularly hybridization with other functional components. The novel hybridization of 2D nanomaterials with various functional species is summarized systematically with emphasis on their enhanced photocatalytic activities and outstanding performances in environmental remediation. First, the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation is given for discussing the advantages/shortcomings of regular 2D materials and identifying the importance of constructing hybrid 2D photocatalysts. An overview of several types of intensively investigated 2D nanomaterials (i.e., graphene, g-C₃ N₄ , MoS₂ , WO₃ , Bi₂ O₃ , and BiOX) is then given to indicate their hybridized methodologies, synergistic effect, and improved applications in decontamination of organic dyes and other pollutants. Finally, future research directions are rationally suggested based on the current challenges.
