Abstract
Selenium (Se) enhances the resistance of plants exposed to metal stress and can be used to lessen the impacts of toxic elements and to enhance the effectiveness of the plants used to clean up polluted sites. There is no information available about the optimum dose and form of Se to stimulate the camelthorn (Alhagi maurorum Medik) plant, which is one of the plants used in the phytostabilization of toxic elements. The impacts of selenate (Se-VI) and selenite (Se-IV) on the phytoremediation of toxic metals from loamy soils by camelthorn were investigated in a pot experiment. Se-VI and Se-IV were added to the soil at doses of 0, 5, and 10 mg Se kg-1 soil, and each treatment was repeated five times. Se-VI and Se-IV, significantly increased plant growth and nutrient uptake. The addition of Se, either from Se-VI or Se-IV, significantly increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) enzymes, and the non-enzymatic antioxidant compounds, i.e., proline and phenols, compared to the control. The addition of Se strengthened the defense against metal stress, and Se-VI outperformed Se-IV in boosting camelthorn's resistance to hazardous metal contamination. Selenium increased the accumulation of metal in the root of camelthorn and reduced root-shoot transfer. The best technique to boost camelthorn plants' capacity to clean up metal-contaminated soils is to supplement them with selenium in the form of selenate at a concentration of 10 mg Se kg-1 soil.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for both human and animals. Plants serve as the primary source of Se in the food chain. Se concentration and availability in plants is influenced by soil properties and environmental conditions. Optimal Se levels promote plant growth and enhance stress tolerance, while excessive Se concentration can result in toxicity. Se enhances plants ROS scavenging ability by promoting antioxidant compound synthesis. The ability of Se to maintain redox balance depends upon ROS compounds, stress conditions and Se application rate. Furthermore, Se-dependent antioxidant compound synthesis is critically reliant on plant macro and micro nutritional status. As these nutrients are fundamental for different co-factors and amino acid synthesis. Additionally, phytohormones also interact with Se to promote plant growth. Hence, utilization of phytohormones and modified crop nutrition can improve Se-dependent crop growth and plant stress tolerance. This review aims to explore the assimilation of Se into plant proteins, its intricate effect on plant redox status, and the specific interactions between Se and phytohormones. Furthermore, we highlight the proposed physiological and genetic mechanisms underlying Se-mediated phytohormone-dependent plant growth modulation and identified research opportunities that could contribute to sustainable agricultural production in the future.

Abstract
Arsenic (As) is widely present in the environment, and virtually all bacteria possess a conserved ars operon to resist As toxicity. High selenium (Se) concentrations tend to be cytotoxic. Se has an uneven regional distribution and is added to mitigate As contamination in Se-deficient areas. However, the bacterial response to exogenous Se remains poorly understood. Herein, we found that As(III) presence was crucial for Enterobacter sp. Z1 to develop resistance against Se(IV). Se(IV) reduction served as a detoxification mechanism in bacteria, and our results demonstrated an increase in the production of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) in the presence of As(III). Tandem mass tag proteomics analysis revealed that the induction of As(III) activated the inositol phosphate, butanoyl-CoA/dodecanoyl-CoA, TCA cycle, and tyrosine metabolism pathways, thereby enhancing bacterial metabolism to resist Se(IV). Additionally, arsHRBC, sdr-mdr, purHD, and grxA were activated to participate in the reduction of Se(IV) into SeNPs. Our findings provide innovative perspectives for exploring As-induced Se biotransformation in prokaryotes.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of humans, animals, and certain plants. It is extensively present throughout the Earth's crust and is absorbed by crops in the form of selenates and selenite, eventually entering the food chain. Se biofortification is an agricultural process that employs agronomic and genetic strategies. Its goal is to enhance the mechanisms of crop uptake and the accumulation of exogenous Se, resulting in the production of crops enriched with Se. This process ultimately contributes to promoting human health. Agronomic strategies in Se biofortification aim to enhance the availability of exogenous Se in crops. Concurrently, genetic strategies focus on improving a crop's capacity to uptake, transport, and accumulate Se. Early research primarily concentrated on optimizing Se biofortification methods, improving Se fertilizer efficiency, and enhancing Se content in crops. In recent years, there has been a growing realization that Se can effectively enhance crop growth and increase crop yield, thereby contributing to alleviating food shortages. Additionally, Se has been found to promote the accumulation of macro-nutrients, antioxidants, and beneficial mineral elements in crops. The supplementation of Se biofortified foods is gradually emerging as an effective approach for promoting human dietary health and alleviating hidden hunger. Therefore, in this paper, we provide a comprehensive summary of the Se biofortification conducted over the past decade, mainly focusing on Se accumulation in crops and its impact on crop quality. We discuss various Se biofortification strategies, with an emphasis on the impact of Se fertilizer strategies on crop Se accumulation and their underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, we highlight Se's role in enhancing crop quality and offer perspective on Se biofortification in crop improvement, guiding future mechanistic explorations and applications of Se biofortification.

Abstract
Rapeseed has the ability to absorb cadmium in the roots and transfer it to aboveground organs, making it a potential species for remediating soil cadmium (Cd) pollution. However, the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon in rapeseed are still unclear. In this study, a 'cadmium-enriched' parent, 'P1', with high cadmium transport and accumulation in the shoot (cadmium root: shoot transfer ratio of 153.75%), and a low-cadmium-accumulation parent, 'P2', (with a cadmium transfer ratio of 48.72%) were assessed for Cd concentration using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). An F2 genetic population was constructed by crossing 'P1' with 'P2' to map QTL intervals and underlying genes associated with cadmium enrichment. Fifty extremely cadmium-enriched F2 individuals and fifty extremely low-accumulation F2 individuals were selected based on cadmium content and cadmium transfer ratio and used for bulk segregant analysis (BSA) in combination with whole genome resequencing. This generated a total of 3,660,999 SNPs and 787,034 InDels between these two segregated phenotypic groups. Based on the delta SNP index (the difference in SNP frequency between the two bulked pools), nine candidate Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) from five chromosomes were identified, and four intervals were validated. RNA sequencing of 'P1' and 'P2' in response to cadmium was also performed and identified 3502 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between 'P1' and 'P2' under Cd treatment. Finally, 32 candidate DEGs were identified within 9 significant mapping intervals, including genes encoding a glutathione S-transferase (GST), a molecular chaperone (DnaJ), and a phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK), among others. These genes are strong candidates for playing an active role in helping rapeseed cope with cadmium stress. Therefore, this study not only sheds new light on the molecular mechanisms of Cd accumulation in rapeseed but could also be useful for rapeseed breeding programs targeting this trait.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) acquirement from daily diet can help reduce the risk of many diseases. The edible parts of crop plants are the main source of dietary Se, while the Se content in crops is determined by Se bioavailability in soil. We summarize recent research on the biogeochemical cycle of Se driven by specific microorganisms and emphasize the oxidizing process in the Se cycle. Moreover, we discuss how plant root exudates and rhizosphere microorganisms affect soil Se availability. Finally, we cover beneficial microorganisms, including endophytes, that promote crop quality and improve crop tolerance to environmental stresses. Se availability to plants depends on the balance between adsorption and desorption, reduction, methylation and oxidation, which are determined by interactions among soil properties, microbial communities and plants. Reduction and methylation processes governed by bacteria or fungi lead to declined Se availability, while Se oxidation regulated by Se-oxidizing microorganisms increases Se availability to plants. Despite a much lower rate of Se oxidization compared to reduction and methylation, the potential roles of microbial communities in increasing Se bioavailability are probably largely underestimated. Enhancing Se oxidation and Se desorption are crucial for the promotion of Se bioavailability and uptake, particularly in Se-deficient soils. Beneficial roles of Se are reported in terms of improved crop growth and quality, and enhanced protection against fungal diseases and abiotic stress through improved photosynthetic traits, increased sugar and amino acid contents, and promoted defense systems. Understanding Se transformation along the plant-soil continuum is crucial for agricultural production and even for human health.

Abstract
Selenium is a micronutrient with a wide range of functions in animals, including humans, and in microorganisms such as microalgae. However, its role in plant metabolism remains ambiguous. Recent studies of Se supplementation showed that not only does it increase the content of the element itself, but also affects the accumulation of secondary metabolites in plants. The purpose of this review is to analyze and summarize the available data on the place of selenium in the secondary metabolism of plants and its effect on the accumulation of some plant metabolites (S- and N-containing secondary metabolites, terpenes, and phenolic compounds). In addition, possible molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways underlying these effects are discussed. It should be noted that available data on the effect of Se on the accumulation of secondary metabolites are inconsistent and contradictory. According to some studies, selenium has a positive effect on the accumulation of certain metabolites, while other similar studies show a negative effect or no effect at all. The following aspects were identified as possible ways of regulating plant secondary metabolism by Se-supplementation: changes occurring in primary S/N metabolism, hormonal regulation, redox metabolism, as well as at the transcriptomic level of secondary metabolite biosynthesis. In all likelihood, the confusion in the results can be explained by other, more complex regulatory mechanisms in which selenium is involved and which affect the production of metabolites. Further study on the involvement of various forms of selenium in metabolic and signaling pathways is crucial for a deeper understanding of its role in growth, development, and health of plants, as well as the regulatory mechanisms behind them.
