Understanding Emergency Department Healthcare Professionals' Perspectives of Caring for Individuals in Suicidal Crisis: A Qualitative Study

Help seekers regularly present to Emergency Departments (EDs) when in suicidal crisis for intervention to ensure their immediate safety, which may assist in reducing future attempts. The emergency health workforce have unique insights that can inform suicide prevention efforts during this critical junction in an individual's experience with suicide. This paper explores the treatment and care delivery experiences of 54 health professionals working in EDs within one of the LifeSpan suicide prevention trial sites in Australia. Data was collected via six focus groups and six interviews. Thematic analysis resulted in three themes: (1) physicality of the emergency department, (2) juggling it all-the bureaucracy, practicalities, and human approach to care, and (3) impact of care delivery on ED staff. Findings highlight the need for workplace training that incorporates responding to the uncertainty of suicidal crisis, to compliment the solution-focused medical model of care. Broader policy changes to the ED system are also considered to ensure better outcomes for health professionals and help-seekers alike.

The experiences of Turkish psychiatric nurses with psychiatric emergencies in the clinics of Turkey's mental health and diseases hospital: A descriptive qualitative study

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of Turkish nurses in the psychiatry clinics of Turkey's Mental Health and Diseases Hospital DESIGN AND METHODS: This descriptive qualitative study was conducted on 20 psychiatric nurses working at a psychiatric hospital. A semi-structured in-person interview technique was used for data collection.

RESULTS

Six themes were defined in this study. The majority of psychiatric nurses stated that they usually faced suicidal and aggressive cases and that they used security measures, restraint and isolation, medical treatment, and emergency codes as basic interventions.

Psychiatry is a field of clinical practice requiring case management skills to deal with various psychiatric presentations.

Exploring the hidden curriculum of professionalism and medical ethics in a psychiatry emergency department

PURPOSE

To investigate the hidden curriculum of professionalism in the emergency department.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This is a qualitative study that consisted of six in-depth semi-structured interviews and a focus group with psychiatry residents of a teaching hospital program about their perception of professionalism in emergency department. A simple content analysis method has been conducted for the extraction of findings.

FINDINGS

Common themes that were detected in the hidden curriculum were "Disregarding the priority of the patients"; "Overriding patient autonomy"; "Non-empathetic care"; "Breaching Confidentiality"; "Injustice in providing care"; and "Dishonesty" PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Professional behaviors are mostly learned through the hidden curriculum. The hidden and formal curricula of professionalism are different in several domains. Paying attention to organizational culture and social environment is critical for promoting professionalism.
