Effect of Birth Story on Personality Traits and Death Anxiety

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the birth story of individuals on personality traits and death anxiety.

METHODS

This descriptive and analytical research was completed with 1,635 people who participated voluntarily. The study data were collected with the Personal Information Form, Cervantes Personality Scale (CPS), and Abdel-Khalek Death Anxiety Scale (ASDA).

RESULTS

The research sample is average means 31.63 ± 11.04 years, most of the female (72.7%) and married (54.6%). In our study, it was observed that women's death anxiety was higher than men's. Our study found that individuals born by caesarean section had greater neurotic personality traits, emotional stability/neuroticism score averages, and death anxiety scores compared to individuals born vaginally.

CONCLUSION

In the model made with multiple regression analysis, birth type did not significantly predict death anxiety, while sex and emotional stability/neuroticism personality trait significantly predicted death anxiety.

Female gender and low physical activity are risk factors for academic stress in incoming nursing students

PURPOSE

Nursing students suffer from stress more frequently than other students. The objective was to analyze the academic stressors that most affect new nursing students.

DESIGN AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study on new nursing students.

FINDINGS

Two hundred and eighty-two students, 78% women, mean age of 21.46 (6.1) years. Giving presentations in class and lack of time for homework are the items that cause the greatest academic stress. Women had higher levels of academic stress, and higher levels of physical activity are related to lower academic stress.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Women have a higher level of academic stress. Doing sport is a protective factor that diminishes academic stress the more it is practiced. Encouraging nursing students to play sports could be beneficial in reducing their academic stress, with women benefiting the most.

Psychometric properties of the Gender Role Attitudes Scale among Turkish nursing students and factors affecting their attitudes

PURPOSE

This study aimed to test the psychometric properties of the Gender Roles Attitudes Scale-Turkish Version (GRAS-TR) and evaluate nursing students' gender role attitudes.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This was a psychometric and descriptive study. The sample consisted of 916 nursing students at two state universities in Turkey.

FINDINGS

The content validity index of the scale was 0.89. The confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the fit indices were acceptable/good. Test-retest results and Cronbach alpha coefficient showed that the scale has high reliability. Nursing students scored above midlevel from GRAS-TR.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

GRAS-TR is a valid and reliable instrument. Nursing students who were women, had postgraduate education, few siblings, and were not born/raised in the eastern region had a more egalitarian attitude.

Evaluation of gender equality attitudes of Turkish and Foreign Nursing Students at a Private University

Objective:

To determine the gender equality attitudes of nursing students studying at a private university, the sociodemographic factors affecting gender equality, and the difference in gender attitudes between Turkish and foreign students.

Methods:

This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Faculty of Nursing at Near East University in March and April 2019. Three hundred six students studying in Turkish and English nursing programs in the thirdyear of study were included in the research. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the GEM scale were used as the data collection tools.

Results:

The mean age of the participants was 21.11 ± 3.88. 76.1% of the students were female and 33.3 students were foreign. The Gender Equality Men scores of the Turkish and foreign students were significantly different (p=0.001). Gender, the educational level of the father, a history of violence in the family, and talking about family and sexual issues affected the gender attitudes of all students.

Conclusion:

The results of the present study indicate that culture, gender, family education, and a history of violence in the family affected the gender equality scores of the nursing students.
