"Unless they bring it up, I won't go digging": Psychiatric nurses' experiences of developing therapeutic relationships with adult survivors of child sexual abuse

Exploring the Use of Sea Swimming as an Intervention With Young People With Mental Health Challenges: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

There is emerging evidence that sea swimming can have a positive impact on the mental health of adults. Less is known about how this intervention can impact young people's mental health. The aim of this study was to explore young service users and staff's perspectives on sea swimming in the child and adolescent mental health services. Fourteen participants were interviewed (eight young people and six staff members). Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and five themes were identified. A preference for sea swimming was demonstrated by young people in comparison to other therapies. Young people reported an enhanced (and sustained) sense of well-being after sea swimming. They were able to relate the act of entering cold water to their recovery journey, acknowledging the importance of leaving their comfort zone. A sense of social cohesion was also described. Staff members acknowledged the risks of open sea swimming but highlighted the importance of positive risk taking, given the benefits of this novel intervention. Owing to the positive impact sea swimming can have on the physical and psychological health of young people, there is potential for this novel intervention to be used more frequently within the services.

"People want better": a qualitative exploration of stakeholders' views on introducing well-being coordinators in the screen industry

PURPOSE

There are several factors that negatively impact the well-being of those working in the screen industry. Consequently, the need to introduce Well-being Coordinators has been identified. This study explored the experiences of participants who undertook a Well-being Coordination course tailored for the screen sector. Additionally, it sought to delve into perspectives regarding well-being within the screen industry.

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews were conducted. The study was guided by an interpretive descriptive approach. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyse data.

FINDINGS

Five themes were identified: Opportunities and challenges working in the screen industry, co-existing with harassment, the need for change: importance of wellbeing, becoming a well-being co-ordinator: learning from the course, and the future of the well-being co-ordinator role: opportunities and challenges. The reality that cast and crew co-exist with several forms of harassment within the industry was noted. Despite this, there is hope for the future of the screen sector, particularly the positive impact the role of the Well-being Coordinator could have.

CONCLUSIONS

The experiences of professionals across the screen industry vary; however, a pervasive culture of bullying and harassment is commonplace. Through the introduction of Well-being Coordinators, there is the potential to enact positive change.

"I thought it would just be, like, older men in white coats": A qualitative exploration of first encounters with mental health services

Individuals whose mental health is becoming a concern may not receive the care they require. Although efforts have been made to reduce barriers to accessing services, including stigma reduction campaigns and healthcare practitioner training, there remains a lack of understanding of individual perspectives regarding help-seeking behaviour. The aim of this study was to explore people's first experiences accessing mental health services. A qualitative descriptive approach was adopted. Interviews were conducted with eight service users. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The COREQ checklist guided this study (Tong et al., 2007, International Journal for Quality in Health Care, 19, 349). Three themes were identified: learning to navigate an unfamiliar system, making sense of mental health services, and promoting a positive image for those in need of care. Uncertainty about mental health services and stigmatizing images could be mitigated by developing positive media-based interventions. Systemic barriers need to be addressed and services need to be better resourced to ensure the benefits of early intervention are available to those experiencing mental health challenges. To encourage people to access services earlier, services need to be promoted in a positive way.

Mental health challenges facing male survivors of child sexual abuse: Implications for mental health nurses

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is an issue of epidemic proportions in the United Kingdom (UK) and an international public health problem. Evidence suggests that in the UK one in 20 children have been sexually abused, with one in three not telling anyone about it at the time of the abuse. Conservative estimates suggest that around one in six men have experienced sexual abuse before the age of 18. CSA has been correlated with the development of numerous mental health problems, abused men often displaying externalizing behaviours, including substance misuse, 'risky' sexual behaviours, anti-social behaviour, and offending. This article reports on one aspect of a research study focusing specifically on male survivors of CSA and its effect on their mental health. Using narrative research, face-to-face interviews were used to collect the stories of four men who participated in the research. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Analysis used a two-phase approach; initially, each narrative was analysed as a whole, with an across transcripts analysis then being carried out identifying shared themes emerging from the individual stories. Whilst findings from the second phase of the analysis identify four themes, it is the theme of 'Blocking the Memories' that is the focus for this article. Making a valuable contribution to existent knowledge regarding the experiences of men who were sexually abused as children, this article will help to inform mental health practitioners who are likely to deliver care to male survivors of CSA.
