Abstract
Ionising γ radiation produces reactive oxygen species by water radiolysis, providing an interesting model approach for studying oxidative stress in plants. Three-week old plants of Arabidopsis thaliana were exposed to a low dose rate (25 mGy h-1) of γ radiation for up to 21 days. This treatment had no effect on plant growth and morphology, but it induced chronic oxidation of lipids which was associated with an accumulation of reactive carbonyl species (RCS). However, contrary to lipid peroxidation, lipid RCS accumulation was transient only, being maximal after 1 day of irradiation and decreasing back to the initial level during the subsequent days of continuous irradiation. This indicates the induction of a carbonyl-metabolising process during chronic ionising radiation. Accordingly, the γ-radiation treatment induced the expression of xenobiotic detoxification-related genes (AER, SDR1, SDR3, ALDH4, and ANAC102). The transcriptomic response of some of those genes (AER, SDR1, and ANAC102) was deregulated in the tga256 mutant affected in three TGAII transcription factors, leading to enhanced and/or prolonged accumulation of RCS and to a marked inhibition of plant growth during irradiation compared to the wild type. These results show that Arabidopsis is able to acclimate to chronic oxidative stress and that this phenomenon requires activation of a carbonyl detoxification mechanism controlled by TGAII. This acclimation did not occur when plants were exposed to an acute γ radiation stress (100 Gy) which led to persistent accumulation of RCS and marked inhibition of plant growth. This study shows the role of secondary products of lipid peroxidation in the detrimental effects of reactive oxygen species.

Abstract
The plant-specific family of GRAS transcription factors has been wide implicated in the regulation of transcriptional reprogramming associated with a diversity of biological functions ranging from plant development processes to stress responses. Functional analyses of GRAS transcription factors supported by in silico structural and comparative analyses are emerging and clarifying the regulatory networks associated with their biological roles. In this review, a detailed analysis of GRAS proteins' structure and biochemical features as revealed by recent discoveries indicated how these characteristics may impact subcellular location, molecular mechanisms, and function. Nomenclature issues associated with GRAS classification into different subfamilies in diverse plant species even in the presence of robust genomic resources are discussed, in particular how it affects assumptions of biological function. Insights into the mechanisms driving evolution of this gene family and how genetic and epigenetic regulation of GRAS contributes to subfunctionalization are provided. Finally, this review debates challenges and future perspectives on the application of this complex but promising gene family for crop improvement to cope with challenges of environmental transition.

Abstract
New regulatory functions in plant development and environmental stress responses have recently emerged for a number of apocarotenoids produced by enzymatic or nonenzymatic oxidation of carotenoids. β-Cyclocitric acid (β-CCA) is one such compound derived from β-carotene, which triggers defense mechanisms leading to a marked enhancement of plant tolerance to drought stress. We show here that this response is associated with an inhibition of root growth affecting both root cell elongation and division. Remarkably, β-CCA selectively induced cell cycle inhibitors of the SIAMESE-RELATED (SMR) family, especially SMR5, in root tip cells. Overexpression of the SMR5 gene in Arabidopsis induced molecular and physiological changes that mimicked in large part the effects of β-CCA. In particular, the SMR5 overexpressors exhibited an inhibition of root development and a marked increase in drought tolerance which is not related to stomatal closure. SMR5 up-regulation induced changes in gene expression that strongly overlapped with the β-CCA-induced transcriptomic changes. Both β-CCA and SMR5 led to a down-regulation of many cell cycle activators (cyclins, cyclin-dependent kinases) and a concomitant up-regulation of genes related to water deprivation, cellular detoxification, and biosynthesis of lipid biopolymers such as suberin and lignin. This was correlated with an accumulation of suberin lipid polyesters in the roots and a decrease in nonstomatal leaf transpiration. Taken together, our results identify the β-CCA-inducible and drought-inducible SMR5 gene as a key component of a stress-signaling pathway that reorients root metabolism from growth to multiple defense mechanisms leading to drought tolerance.

Abstract
Wheat is critical for food security, and is challenged by biotic stresses, chiefly aphids and the viruses they transmit. The objective of this study was to determine whether aphids feeding on wheat could trigger a defensive plant reaction to oxidative stress that involved plant oxylipins. Plants were grown in chambers with a factorial combination of two nitrogen rates (100% N vs. 20% N in Hoagland solution), and two concentrations of CO2 (400 vs. 700 ppm). The seedlings were challenged with Rhopalosiphum padi or Sitobion avenae for 8 h. Wheat leaves produced phytoprostanes (PhytoPs) of the F1 series, and three types of phytofurans (PhytoFs): ent-16(RS)-13-epi-ST-Δ14-9-PhytoF, ent-16(RS)-9-epi-ST-Δ14-10-PhytoF and ent-9(RS)-12-epi-ST-Δ10-13-PhytoF. The oxylipin levels varied with aphids, but not with other experimental sources of variation. Both Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae reduced the concentrations of ent-16(RS)-13-epi-ST-Δ14-9-PhytoF and ent-16(RS)-9-epi-ST-Δ14-10-PhytoF in relation to controls, but had little or no effect on PhytoPs. Our results are consistent with aphids affecting the levels of PUFAs (oxylipin precursors), which decreased the levels of PhytoFs in wheat leaves. Therefore, PhytoFs could be postulated as an early indicator of aphid hosting for this plant species. This is the first report on the quantification of non-enzymatic PhytoFs and PhytoPs in wheat leaves in response to aphids.

Abstract
The degree of unsaturation of plant lipids is high, making them sensitive to oxidation. They thus constitute primary targets of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. Moreover, the hydroperoxides generated during lipid peroxidation decompose in a variety of secondary products which can propagate oxidative stress or trigger signaling mechanisms. Both primary and secondary products of lipid oxidation are helpful markers of oxidative stress in plants. This chapter describes a number of methods that have been developed to measure those biomarkers and signals, with special emphasis on the monitoring of photooxidative stress. Depending on their characteristics, those lipid markers provide information not only on the oxidation status of plant tissues but also on the origin of lipid peroxidation, the localization of the damage, or the type of reactive oxygen species involved.

Abstract
Potassium (K+) is indispensable for the regulation of a plethora of functions like plant metabolism, growth, development, and abiotic stress responses. K+ is associated with protein synthesis and entangled in the activation of scores of enzymes, stomatal regulation, and photosynthesis. It has multiple transporters and channels that assist in the uptake, efflux, transport within the cell as well as from soil to different tissues, and the grain filling sites. While it is implicated in ion homeostasis during salt stress, it acts as a modulator of stomatal movements during water deficit conditions. K+ is reported to abate the effects of chilling and photooxidative stresses. K+ has been found to ameliorate effectively the co-occurrence of drought and high-temperature stresses. Nutrient deficiency of K+ makes leaves necrotic, leads to diminished photosynthesis, and decreased assimilate utilization highlighting the role it plays in photosynthesis. Notably, K+ is associated with the detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) when plants are exposed to diverse abiotic stress conditions. It is irrefutable now that K+ reduces the activity of NADPH oxidases and at the same time maintains electron transport activity, which helps in mitigating the oxidative stress. K+ as a macronutrient in plant growth, the role of K+ during abiotic stress and the protein phosphatases involved in K+ transport have been reviewed. This review presents a holistic view of the biological functions of K+, its uptake, translocation, signaling, and the critical roles it plays under abiotic stress conditions, plant growth, and development that are being unraveled in recent times.

Abstract
Plants, like most living organisms, spontaneously emit photons of visible light. This ultraweak endogenous chemiluminescence is linked to the oxidative metabolism, with lipid peroxidation constituting a major source of photons in plants. We imaged this signal using a very sensitive cooled CCD camera and analysed its spectral characteristics using bandpass interference filters. In vitro oxidation of lipids induced luminescence throughout the visible spectrum (450−850 nm). However, luminescence in the red spectral domain (>640 nm) occurred first, then declined in parallel with the appearance of the emission in the blue-green (<600 nm). This temporal separation suggests that the chemical species emitting in the blue-green are secondary products, possibly deriving from the red light-emitting species. This conversion did not seem to occur in planta because spontaneous chemiluminescence from plant tissues (leaves, roots) occurred only in the red/far-red light domain (>640 nm), peaking at 700−750 nm. The spectrum of plant chemiluminescence was independent of chlorophyll. The in vivo signal was modulated by cellular detoxification mechanisms and by changes in the concentration of singlet oxygen in the tissues, although the singlet oxygen luminescence bands did not appear as major bands in the spectra. Our results indicate that the intensity of endogenous chemiluminescence from plant tissues is determined by the balance between the formation of luminescent species through secondary reactions involving lipid peroxide-derived intermediates, including singlet oxygen, and their elimination by metabolizing processes. The kinetic aspects of plant chemiluminescence must be taken into account when using the signal as an oxidative stress marker.

Abstract
Oxidation of membrane lipids by reactive oxygen species (ROS) or O2/lipoxygenase leads to the formation of various bioactive compounds collectively called oxylipins. Reactive carbonyl species (RCS) are a group of oxylipins that have the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl structure, including acrolein and 4-hydroxy-(E)-2-nonenal. RCS provides a missing link between ROS stimuli and cellular responses in plants via their electrophilic modification of proteins. The physiological significance of RCS in plants has been established based on the observations that the RCS-scavenging enzymes that are overexpressed in plants or the RCS-scavenging chemicals added to plants suppress the plants' responses to ROS, i.e., photoinhibition, aluminum-induced root damage, programmed cell death (PCD), senescence, abscisic acid-induced stomata closure, and auxin-induced lateral root formation. The functions of RCS are thus a key to ROS- and redox-signaling in plants. The chemical species involved in distinct RCS signaling/damaging phenomena were recently revealed, based on comprehensive carbonyl determinations. This review presents an overview of the current status of research regarding RCS signaling functions in plants and discusses present challenges for gaining a more complete understanding of the signaling mechanisms.
