Efficiency of Oestrous Synchronization by GnRH, Prostaglandins and Socio-Sexual Cues in the North African Maure Goats

The effect of medroxyprogesterone acetate with or without eCG on conception rate of fat-tail ewes in out of breeding season

Many protocols of estrous synchronization in ewes have been developed in the last few decades. The aim of this study was the effect of intravaginal progestogen, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), sponges (a progesterone analogue) with or without equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) in out of breeding season of fat-tailed Iranian Shaal breed anestrus ewes to estimate the conception rate in suburb of Tehran-Iran. In total, 50 non-cyclic ewes out of 85 ewes with < 0.05 ng/ml progesterone (P4) and aged 2 to > 7 years old were selected for out of breeding season program in May-June 2018. They were distributed into two groups (control and treatment). The treatment group (no. 25) received 12 days a sponge containing 60 mg MPA and 500 IU eCG on the day of sponge removal. The control group (no. 25) received 12 days of sponge containing MPA only. Rams were introduced to the flock after removal of sponges in treatment group and concomitant in control group. They remained within the flock for 40 days. The ram to ewe ratio was 1 to 6. Transabdominal ultrasonography was performed for pregnancy diagnosis. The obtained data was analyzed using SPSS software version 16. The conception rate in treatment and control groups were differed significantly (P < 0.01). The conception rates in MPA and MPA+ eCG were 28% and 44%, respectively. Ewes (60%) with < 2 years old had the most conception rate. However, it was shown that use of vaginal sponges containing MPA and eCG in removal time of sponge can increase significantly the conception rate in out of breeding season fat-tail ewes Shaal breed.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of the efficacy of reproductive management practices used to induce resumption of ovarian cyclical activity in anestrous does

Reproductive management practices that use hormones, sociosexual biostimulation, nutritional management, or abiotic factors are used to induce the resumption of reproduction in anestrous does. However, their overall efficacy remains uncertain; therefore, the identification of evidence-based management recommendations to manipulate anestrous in goats is important. Electronic databases were searched to retrieve reports on studies using interventions based on hormonal, sociosexual, nutritional, and abiotic factors. Only experimental studies in which a group of anestrous does was treated and compared against an untreated group were included. Estrus, ovulation, and pregnancy were primary outcomes, whereas the onset of estrus after treatment, the ovulation rate, and the number of anovulatory days were secondary outcomes. Odds ratio (OR) and mean differences were used to synthesize pooled data, and random effects models were used to calculate them. Seventy studies involving 3974 goats met the inclusion criteria. Unclear risk of bias for random sequence generation and allocation concealment predominated across studies. Pooled data for hormonal, sociosexual, and abiotic interventions showed a significant, though variable, increase in estrus (OR range 7.15-144.80), ovulation (OR range 6.08-56.95), and pregnancy (OR range 3.94-30.8). Hormonal treatments significantly reduced the onset of estrus, whereas abiotic interventions failed to reduce the number of anovulatory days. Secondary outcomes were not assessed in trials using sociosexual approaches. Finally, except for pregnancy, no significant efficacy was observed for studies using nutritional management. In conclusion, reproductive management practices using sociosexual approaches showed the highest efficacy for restoring reproductive activity in anestrous does.

Evaluation of different hormonal treatments on oestral and ovarian responses in Moroccan Beni Arouss goats during anoestrus and breeding season

The efficacy of eight combinations of fluorogestone acetate (FGA, 20 or 40 mg as intravaginal device during 11 days), equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG, 300 or 500 UI injected 48 hr before FGA removal) and prostaglandin F_2α (cloprostenol, 0 or 50 μg injected 48 hr before FGA removal) aiming at induction and synchronization of oestrus and ovulation was evaluated during the anoestrus season in spring and during the breeding season in autumn in adult Beni Arouss goats. Oestrous behaviour was recorded between 12 and 60 hr after FGA removal. Blood samplings allowing to assess onset of the pre-ovulatory LH surge and increase of progesterone as sign of an active corpus luteum were performed, respectively, between 20 and 60 hr and 3, 5, 8 and 15 days after FGA removal. No season-related differences (spring vs. autumn) were observed for oestrous response (95% vs. 93%), pre-ovulatory LH surge (94% vs. 84%) and luteal response after 3-8 and 11-15 days post-treatment (respectively 92% vs. 66% and 92% vs. 98%). The onset of oestrus (21 [13-53] vs. 32 [12-54] hr) and LH surge (26 [20-60] vs. 38 [22-60] hr) occurred significantly later in autumn. FGA (40 vs. 20 mg) in autumn significantly delayed the onset of oestrus (36 [16-54] vs. 23 [12-47] hr) and LH surge (44 [26-58] vs. 33 [22-60] hr). Significant treatment-related differences were recorded for onset of LH surge (earliest for 20 mg FGA, 300 IU eCG, 50 μg PGF_2α ) and onset of luteal phase (latest for 40 mg FGA, 300 IU eCG, 50 μg PGF_2α ). In conclusion, the hormone combinations tested appeared equally effective in terms of oestrous and ovulation rates. Season has influenced significantly the onset of oestrus and LH surge, and the high dose regimen of FGA delayed the ovarian response in autumn.
