Reproductive Performance of Native Pulawska and High Productivity Polish Landrace Sows in the Context of Stress During the Period of Early Pregnancy

Effect of the polymorphism of genes related to lactogenesis in pigs on colostrum and milk composition and on rearing performance of piglets

The aim of the study was a search for new polymorphisms in the genes related to lactogenesis, including lactose synthesis in colostrum and milk, and determine their relationship with the content of colostrum and milk components and body weight of the piglets. Colostrum and milk were sampled during the second lactation on d 1, 7, 14 and 21 from 112 sows of Polish Large White (PLW) and Polish Landrace (PL). The piglets’ rearing performance was determined based on the number and body weight at 1, 7, 14 and 21 d of age. In the study six polymorphisms located in different genes were analysed. Among the six polymorphisms under analysis, those identified in the B4GALT1 genes had the most significant effect on colostrum and milk composition and the piglets’ body weight changes. Sows of the B4GALT1GG genotype, when compared to those of B4GALT1AA , produced colostrum and milk with a significantly lower lactose content and reared piglets with a substantially higher body weight (by 0.30 kg) at 21 d of age.

Estrus Behaviour and Reproductive Traits of Pulawska Gilts Associated with Selected Gene Polymorphisms

Searching for the associations between the gene polymorphism and the reproductive traits is essential in defining the genetic native breed specificity, which distinguishes them from the other breeds. The aim of our study was to determine the associations between mutations in the PRL, PRLR, PTGS2, FUT1 genes and sexual and periparturient activity in native Pulawska gilts. The analysis included 72 animals which gave birth to the first litter. Evaluation of the productive value of gilts accounted for indicators of sexual and periparturient activity as well as reproductive traits. The biological material for molecular analyses was obtained from the hair roots of the gilts. The genotype was verified by PCR RFLP analysis. The primers and PCR conditions were determined on the basis of available literature data. Statistically significant differences (P≤0.05) were found at the PRL locus: gilts of AA genotypes (Ins/Ins) at the PRL locus were characterised by longest farrowing duration compared to gilts of AB genotype (P≤0.05). The analysis of PRLR gene showed that gilts of TT genotype revealed a tendency for later occurrence of estrus signs (first and second estrus) and for the markedly longest farrowings (P≤0.05). With regard to PTGS2 and FUT1 loci, no significant differences were found in the parameters of sexual and periparturient activity of the gilts. However, gilts of FUT1 GG genotype gave birth to and reared the largest first litters (P≤0.05). The results of the studies expand the knowledge about the genetic structure and productivity of Pulawska gilts.

Breeding and Performance Potential of Puławska Pigs – A Review

The aim of the study was to discuss breeding of pigs of the Puławska breed, which is included in a Genetic Resources Conservation Programme, and to analyse performance parameters that are useful in domestic pig production. The Puławska breed is the oldest native breed of pig in Poland. Since 1996 it has been protected by a genetic resources conservation programme, owing to breeding traditions and the production traits characteristic of the breed. The use value of these pigs is currently at the level of maternal breeds: number of live piglets born per litter – 10.54; number of piglets reared per litter – 9.37; daily weight gains – 569 g for breeding boars and 562 g for breeding gilts; meat content – 54.6% for breeding boars and 54.9% for breeding gilts. An important element in favour of the use of this breed in domestic production of fresh pork and pork products is its meat quality parameters. The mean values for physical traits (WHC 22.42%, pH45 6.47, pH24 5.63) and chemical parameters (protein 22.70%, fat 2.65%) are characteristic of meat of normal quality. The Puławska breed can be used to produce high-quality fresh meat and meat products, including traditional and regional ones. Puławska pigs are bred and reared according to the principles of sustainable agriculture, which reduces the negative impact of pig production on the natural environment.

Analysis of Genetic Parameters of Carcass Traits and Daily Gain of Native Breed Pigs Raised in Poland

The aim of the study was to determine genetic parameters of live performance traits in pigs of three native breeds maintained in Poland. As part of the conservation programmes, the Puławska (Puł), Złotnicka White (ZW) and Złotnicka Spotted (ZS) breeds are monitored for productivity based on performance test results of these breeds. The study included 6042 gilts and 2406 boars of the Puławska breed, 866 Złotnicka White gilts, and 903 Złotnicka Spotted gilts. The genetic parameters were estimated separately for each breed, and also separately for sexes in the case of the Puławska breed. The components (co)variance and genetic parameters were estimated using the REML method for the animal model taking into account different combination of fixed and random effects. Convergence of the iterative process was achieved by the selection of AIREML algorithm. The coefficients of genetic and phenotypic correlations between measurements of slaughter traits and daily gain were low for all breed groups. In turn, the relationships between backfat thickness measurements and carcass meat percentage were estimated as high. Only the correlations of slaughter traits with loin eye height were not uniform for the analysed breed groups. The coefficients of heritability (h2) were high and intermediate for all breeds and sexes. The highest heritability coefficients were obtained for daily gain (0.58 in ZW to 0.80 in Puł gilts), followed by backfat thickness (0.37 in Puł gilts to 0.64 in ZW) and carcass meat percentage (0.40 in ZS to 0.56 in ZW). The lowest coefficients were obtained for loin eye height (0.24 in Puł boars to 0.40 in ZW). The estimated genetic parameters could be used to verify selection indices of the breeds included in the genetic resources conservation programmes.

Performance Traits of Puławska Pigs Depending on Polymorphism in the RYR1 Gene (C.1843C>T)

The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between polymorphism in the RYR1 gene (rs344435545) and on-farm test results (fattening, slaughter and reproductive traits) of pigs maintained in conservation herds. the experiment covered 76 boars and 291 gilts kept in 33 herds. animals aged 150–210 days were weighed and P2 and P4 backfat thickness as well as P4 loin muscle depth (P4m) were measured with an ultrasonic device. standardised daily gain (g/day) of the animals and carcass meat percentage (%) were determined. the following reproductive traits of sows were also collected: number of teats, age at first farrowing, dates of next farrowing, number of piglets born alive and weaned at 21 days of age. Hair roots were sampled from the gilts, sows and boars to determine the RYR1 gene polymorphism. it was found that only 3% of the animals in the analysed population had TT genotypes, whereas 28.34% were heterozygous (CT). this polymorphism (CT) was carried by 28.34% of the animals. when analysing the effect of this polymorphism on fattening and slaughter traits in live animals, it was found that sows with TT genotype, compared to the others, were characterised by higher backfat thickness only (P≤0.05). In the boars with CC and CT genotypes, no significant differences were noted between the values of the analysed traits. for reproductive traits of the sows, it was observed that females with TT genotype weaned more piglets until 21 days of age (P≤0.05).
