Effects of buffelgrass removal and nitrogen addition on soil microbial communities during an extreme drought in the Sonoran Desert

Kalidium cuspidatum colonization changes the structure and function of salt crust microbial communities

The changes of soil moisture, salinity, and nutrients by halophyte colonization in high-salinity environment profoundly affect the assembly and structure of microbial communities. However, salt marshes in arid region have received little attention. This study was conducted in Lianhuachi Lake, a typical inland salt marsh wetland in China, to determine the physicochemical characteristics of salt crusts in [Kalidium cuspidatum (Ung.-Sternb.) Grub.] colonization areas and bulk soil, respectively, and to analyze the microbial community structure of salt crusts by high-throughput sequencing. Kalidium cuspidatum colonization significantly decreased total salinity, soil water content, and water-soluble ions of salt crusts and increased total carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus content. At the same time, changes in physicochemical properties caused by Kalidium cuspidatum colonization affect the ecological processes of bacterial, fungal, and archaeal community assemblies in salt crusts. In addition, cross-kingdom network analysis showed that Kalidium cuspidatum colonization increased the complexity and stability of microbial networks in salt crust soils. Functional projections further showed that bacterial diversity had a potential driving effect on the nitrogen cycle function of salt crust. Our study further demonstrated the different ecological strategies of microorganisms for halophyte colonization in extreme environments and contributed to the understanding of restoration and management of salt marsh wetlands in arid region.

The Legacy of Plant Invasion: Impacts on Soil Nitrification and Management Implications

Plant invasions can have long-lasting impacts on soil nitrification, which plays a critical role in nutrient cycling and plant growth. This review examines the legacy effects of plant invasion on soil nitrification, focusing on the underlying mechanisms, context dependence, and implications for management. We synthesize literature on the positive, negative and neutral legacy effects of plant invasion on soil nitrification, highlighting the complexity of these effects and the need for further research to fully understand them. Positive legacy effects include increased soil microbial biomass or activity, potentially enhancing nutrient availability for plants. However, negative legacy effects, like reduced nitrifier abundance, can result in decreased soil nitrification rates and nutrient availability. In some cases, changes to nitrification during active invasion appear transitory after the removal of invasive plants, indicating neutral short-term legacies. We discuss the context dependence of legacy effects considering factors, including location, specific invasive plant species, and other environmental conditions. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of these legacy effects for management and restoration strategies, such as the removal or control of invasive plants, and potential approaches for restoring ecosystems with legacy effects on soil nitrification. Finally, we highlight future research directions, including further investigation into the mechanisms and context dependence of legacy effects, and the role of plant-microbe interactions. Overall, this review provides insights into the legacy effects of plant invasion on soil nitrification and their implications for ecosystems.

Comparing common fountain grass removal techniques: cost efficacy and response of native plant community

Fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum) is a globally pervasive invasive species and a prime example of an escaped horticultural ornamental. In areas where it is not naturally found, it displaces native plant communities and disrupts ecological systems and processes. Cost-effective removal efforts that protect the native plant community are needed for its control. We conducted an experiment from March 2018 to March 2021 in 5 m × 5 m plots to test the efficacy and record costs for common removal techniques (cut and herbicide, herbicide one or two times per year, manual removal) in the Sonoran Desert, Arizona, United States. Each treatment took 2.5 years to achieve control in the plots, and treatments did not negatively affect the native plant community. The response of native plants was mediated by year, such that native cover in treatment plots recovered to similar levels as uninvaded control plots with sufficient rainfall. Plots that received the manual removal treatment had almost five more native plant species than the invaded control treatment (22.7 ± 1.63 compared to 18.1 ± 1.61). Herbicide applied in spring and fall increased efficacy of removals in the first year but was not significantly different from the other treatments averaged over year. Herbicide once per year was most cost effective across different sized areas. Manual removal was also cost effective in small areas (< 0.06 hectares) but was more expensive than herbicide twice a year in larger areas. Our results provide a toolset that enables managers to select removal treatments based on a balance of convenience, resources, and scale of the infestation.
