Abstract
BACKGROUND Early childhood caries (ECC) is a challenge for pediatric dentists all over the world, and dietary factor is an important factor affecting the occurrence of ECC. Currently, there is limited research on the impact of dietary nutrient intake from Chinese diets on ECC. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation of dietary nutrients intake with ECC and caries activity (CA) among children aged 3-5 years, and to provide dietary guidance to slow down the occurrence and development of ECC. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022. A total of 155 children were divided into three groups: caries-free group, ECC group and Severe early childhood caries (SECC) group according to the caries statues. And according to the caries activity test (CAT) value, they were also divided into three group: low CA group (L-CA), middle CA group (M-CA) and high CA group (H-CA). The 24-hour dietary intake information was collected by mobile phone application (APP). The intake of children's daily dietary nutrients were calculated referring to "China Food Composition Tables". RESULTS In this study, 17, 39,and 99 children were diagnosed with caries-free, ECC, and SECC. There were 33, 36, and 86 children diagnosed with L-CA, M-CA, and H-CA. The risk of ECC was increased with the intake of cholesterol(OR = 1.005) and magnesium (OR = 1.026) and decreased with the intake of iron (OR = 0.770). The risk of SECC was increased with the intake of cholesterol (OR = 1.003). The risk of high CA was increased with the intake of cholesterol (OR = 1.002). The combined application of dietary total calories, carbohydrate, cholesterol, sodium, magnesium and selenium in the diagnosis of ECC had an area under ROC curve of 0.741. CONCLUSIONS The increased dietary cholesterol intake may be a common risk factor for ECC and high CA in children aged 3-5. The combined application of dietary intake of total calories, carbohydrate, cholesterol, sodium, magnesium and selenium has a higher predictive value for the occurrence of ECC.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Alteration in salivary composition and its effect on the oral cavity in diabetic child patients remains equivocal. PURPOSE This study was performed to assess the relationship between salivary factors and gingival status in children with type-1 diabetes mellitus (DM). MATERIAL AND METHOD In this cross-sectional study, 120 subjects aged 6-16 years (60 well-controlled and poorly-controlled diabetics and 60 healthy individuals) were examined to determine the gingival index (GI) and plaque index (PI). The unstimulated saliva samples were collected to measure the salivary triglyceride, cholesterol, albumin, α-amylase, total protein levels by the laboratory kits. Total antioxidant capacity and the free radicals scavenger index were measured by the Ferric Reducing Ability Of Plasma (FRAP) and 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assays, respectively. Data were analyzed by parametric and non-parametric, Pearson correlation, and t tests at a 5% error level. RESULTS GI of diabetics was significantly higher than that of healthy individuals (1.51± 0.71 and 0.9±0.81, respectively, p< 0.001). No significant difference was found between the PI of diabetics compared to healthy volunteers (1.59±0.69, 1.63±0.74, respectively). The levels of salivary triglyceride and cholesterol, albumin and total proteins in healthy subjects were significantly higher than that in people with DM (p< 0.001). A significantly more salivary α-amylase activity was found in diabetics compared to non-diabetics (p< 0.001). No significant differences were found between diabetic and non-diabetic subjects in terms of DPPH (95.5, 95.9%, respectively) and FRAP (9.77±0.13, 9.78±0.12 (µmol/mL), respectively). CONCLUSION More gingival inflammation and salivary α-amylase activity and lower level of salivary lipids, albumin, and total proteins were found in diabetic patients, but there was no association between the level of lipids, proteins, and the total antioxidant capacity of saliva with periodontal health indicators in patients with DM and healthy individuals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The association between dental caries, salivary alterations, and type-1 diabetes mellitus (D1TM) remains inconclusive in children and adolescents. This systematic review evaluated the caries status and salivary alterations of children and adolescents suffering from D1TM. METHODS Meta-analysis searched from 5 electronic databases was performed considering the decay-missing-filled teeth (DMFT), decay-missing-filled surfaces, and decay-missing-filled primary teeth (dmft) index for caries and the stimulated flow rate, unstimulated flow rate, and buffering capacity for salivary alterations. Quality assessments were performed using the Healthcare Research and Quality Agency. RESULTS Eleven studies satisfied the eligibility criteria. The meta-analysis revealed that DMF(T) (0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.14-1.08, P = .01) and dmft (-0.43; 95% CI, -0.71 to -0.15, P = .002) were significantly higher in D1TM group than the non-D1TM group. Stimulated flow rate (-0.40; 95% CI, -0.57 to -0.23, P < .00001) was significantly lower in D1TM group than in the non-D1TM group. No significant differences in decay-missing-filled surfaces and the buffering capacity were observed between the D1TM and the non-D1TM groups. CONCLUSIONS The level of DMF(T) and dmft was higher in children/adolescents with D1TM than that with non-D1TM, and the salivary flow could be considered decreased with D1TM. The strength of the evidence of the studies analyzed, however, was deemed to be moderate and low.

Abstract
Saliva plays a key role in food absorption and digestion mainly due to both its enzymes and microbiota. The main objective of this study was to compare the oral microbiota and salivary parameters between men and women in response to feeding. To answer this question, we set up a pilot study on 10 male and 10 female subjects to examine the role of saliva in glycaemia physiology. Biological parameters and the microbiotal composition of saliva were analyzed in fasted and fed states. The results show that the level of blood glucose was not different between men and women in the fasted state (88.00 mg/dL ± 6.38 vs 87.00 mg/dL ±8.07, p = 0.9149) or in the fed state (102.44 mg/dL ± 14.03 vs 116.9 mg/dL ± 25, p = 0.1362). Free fatty acids (FFA 0.15 mmol/L ± 0.15 vs 0.07 mmol/L ± 0.07, p = 0,0078), cholesterol (0.53 mmol/L ± 0.30 vs 0.15 mmol/L ± 0.14, p < 0.0001), and total saliva proteins (13.2 g/L ± 4.31 vs 9.02 g/L ± 6.98, p = 0.0168) were decreased after feeding, as well as the saliva lipase (27.89 U/L ± 25.7 vs 12.28 U/L ± 4.85, p = 0.0126). A very significant increase in the relative abundance of Streptococcaceae (24.56 ± 9.32 vs 13.53 ± 7.47, p = 0.00055) and a decrease in Prevotellaceae (34.45 ± 9.30 vs 17.43 ± 9.03, p = 0.00055) were observed in the fed condition. When investigating gender-related differences in the fasted state, men showed higher levels of cholesterol (0.71 mmol/L ± 0.26 vs 0.40 mmol/L ± 0.27, p = 0.0329), FFA (0.25 mmol/L ± 0.18 vs 0.08 mmol/L ± 0.06, p = 0.0049), and triglycerides (0.24 mmol/L ± 0.15 vs 0.09 mmol/L ± 0.04, p = 0.006) than women. Finally, differences could be observed in saliva microbiota between men and women in the fasted condition but even more in the fed condition, where Porphyromonas and Capnocytophaga were overrepresented in the male salivary samples compared with female saliva. Thus, biological parameters and microbiota in saliva could be the signatures of the feeding conditions and sex gender status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze articles aimed at evaluating the association between diabetes, metabolic control, diabetes duration, and dental caries. OVERVIEW A systematic search in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted to retrieve papers in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, up to April 2019. The research strategy was constructed considering the "PECO" strategy. Only quantitative observational studies were analyzed. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. The meta-analyses were performed based on random-effects models using the statistical platform R. A total of 69 articles was included in the systematic review and 40 in the meta-analysis. Type 1 diabetics have a significantly higher DMFT compared to controls. No significant differences were found between type 2 diabetics and controls and between well-controlled and poorly controlled diabetics. Concerning diabetes duration, all authors failed to find differences between groups. CONCLUSION Although there is still a need for longitudinal studies, the meta-analysis proved that type 1 diabetics have a high dental caries risk. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE It is necessary to be aware of all risk factors for dental caries that may be associated with these patients, making it possible to include them into an individualized prevention program.

Abstract
Dental caries remains one of the most common chronic diseases affecting children worldwide with a multi-factorial etiology. The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between socioeconomic status (SES), dietary intake, food insecurity (FI), and dental caries in Korean children and adolescents. The study utilized data from the 2-year Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted with 1,559 Korean boys and 1,391 girls aged 2 to 18 years from 2012 to 2013. Fathers' education (P=0.017), mothers' education (P<0.001), and household income (P=0.049) were all significantly associated with dental caries among Korean boys. As for dietary practices, both eating breakfast (P<0.001) and frequency of eating out (P<0.001) were strongly associated with dental caries (P<0.001). Three models of FI were used and no differences were found regarding genders. In model 3, both food insecure male [odds ratio (OR)=1.682, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.999~2.832] and female (OR=1.900, 95% CI: 1.094~3.299) subjects had higher odds of developing dental caries than food secure subjects after adjusting the confounding factors. The present study showed a strong association between FI mediated by SES and dental caries. Nutrition education programs targeting low-socioeconomic families are necessary as a tool to prevent dental caries in Korea.

Abstract
We developed a versatile and highly sensitive biosensor platform. The platform is based on electrochemical-enzymatic redox cycling induced by selective enzyme immobilization on nano-sized carbon interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Without resorting to sophisticated nanofabrication technologies, we used batch wafer-level carbon microelectromechanical systems (C-MEMS) processes to fabricate 3D carbon IDEs reproducibly, simply, and cost effectively. In addition, AuNPs were selectively electrodeposited on specific carbon nanoelectrodes; the high surface-to-volume ratio and fast electron transfer ability of AuNPs enhanced the electrochemical signal across these carbon IDEs. Gold nanoparticle characteristics such as size and morphology were reproducibly controlled by modulating the step-potential and time period in the electrodeposition processes. To detect cholesterol selectively using AuNP/carbon IDEs, cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) was selectively immobilized via the electrochemical reduction of the diazonium cation. The sensitivity of the AuNP/carbon IDE-based biosensor was ensured by efficient amplification of the redox mediators, ferricyanide and ferrocyanide, between selectively immobilized enzyme sites and both of the combs of AuNP/carbon IDEs. The presented AuNP/carbon IDE-based cholesterol biosensor exhibited a wide sensing range (0.005–10 mM) and high sensitivity (~993.91 µA mM−1 cm−2; limit of detection (LOD) ~1.28 µM). In addition, the proposed cholesterol biosensor was found to be highly selective for the cholesterol detection.
