Family members' expressions of dignity in palliative care: a qualitative study

The effect of using virtual reality goggles on psychological well-being and care burden of informal caregivers of patients hospitalized in a palliative care clinic

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to determine the effect of virtual reality goggles on the psychological well-being and care burden of informal caregivers of patients hospitalized in a palliative care clinic.

METHODS

Pretest-posttest randomized controlled study. It was conducted from June-October 2023 with 44 informal caregivers (22 in the control, 22 in the intervention group). Caregivers in the intervention group were shown 360° relaxing virtual reality videos with virtual reality goggles for four weeks, three days a week, 30 min per use. The control group did not receive any intervention. Data were collected using the caregiver introduction form, psychological well-being scale, caregiving burden scale, and satisfaction form for virtual reality goggles. Analyses were performed with Independent Sample T-Test and Paired Sample T-Test.

RESULTS

The post-test mean score of the psychological well-being scale of the intervention group was statistically significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). The post-test mean score of the caregiving burden scale of the control group was statistically significantly higher than the intervention group (p < 0.05). 68% of the caregivers in the intervention group were very satisfied with using virtual reality goggles. This study revealed that using virtual reality goggles increased psychological well-being and reduced the care burden of informal caregivers of patients hospitalized in a palliative care clinic.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study have revealed that virtual reality glasses can be used to support informal caregivers in palliative care. This study reveals promising results for improving the quality of patient care by supporting informal caregivers.

Components of spirituality in older adults: A phenomenological study through interviews based on dignity therapy

AIM

A key perspective in examining dignity, which is important for older adults, is spirituality. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the components of spirituality in older adults through interviews based on dignity therapy (DT).

METHODOLOGICAL DESIGN AND JUSTIFICATION

Colaizzi's descriptive phenomenology was applied to understand experiences rooted in the life world of older adults from their own perspective.

ETHICAL ISSUES AND APPROVAL

This study was approved by the ethical review committee of the author's university. All participants provided consent to participate.

RESEARCH METHODS

Semi-structured interviews based on DT were conducted with 11 community-dwelling adults aged 65 years or older who were using some form of medical or social services. The interviews were transcribed, and the text was analysed based on Colaizzi's phenomenological method.

RESULTS

Four themes were identified as components of spirituality in older adults: trauma, being silent about hard experiences, forming connections and taking on challenges and discovering one's own spirit. The participants felt a sense of helplessness and frustration as they dealt with traumatic events. Feelings of shame, guilt and/or resignation prevented them from talking about the distress they were experiencing, but they were able to move forward after receiving emotional support and having opportunities to share with others. These processes led to the discovery of a new self.

STUDY LIMITATIONS

This study assessed the experiences of older adults in Japan and may therefore have been influenced by the social background and culture of Japan. Future research should target older adults from a variety of social backgrounds as well as those with specific health conditions.

CONCLUSION

The findings suggest the importance of creating opportunities for healthcare professionals as well as family, friends and community members to help older adults reflect on their lives and talk about their accomplishments and unresolved issues. Doing so should help older adults maintain their dignity while remaining aware of their mortality.

Psychosocial burden in transfusion dependent beta-thalassemia patients and its impact on the quality of life and the problem of dignity

Beta-thalassemia major is a genetic blood disorder that impacts hemoglobin production with several symptoms that decrease quality of life in patients. Blood transfusions may help them to regulate their hemoglobin needs, though this is a lifelong intervention. Struggling with dependent blood transfusion status impacts patients greatly including their bio, psycho, social, and spiritual health, potentially raising a bioethical issue related to human dignity.

Threats to professional dignity of Iranian clinical nurses: A qualitative study

AIM

Identifying threats to the nurses' professional dignity has an important role in maintaining and promoting their dignity. This study aimed to evaluate the perception of Iranian nurses' experiences of threats to their professional dignity in clinical settings.

DESIGN

A qualitative directed content analysis approach was used.

METHODS

The present qualitative study was conducted in Iran.Clinical nurses were selected using the purposive sampling method. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 15 clinical nurses from October 2020 to March 2021. The qualitative content analysis method was used to analyze the data.

RESULTS

Two main categories and 16 subcategories were extracted as follows: (1) professional factors (containing seven subcategories) and (2) organizational factors (containing nine subcategories).

CONCLUSIONS

To promote the professional dignity of nurses, it is recommended to identify the factors threatening their professional dignity and create healthy work environments for them.
