Abstract
BACKGROUND Alexithymia is characterized by difficulties in describing feelings and physical sensations. Few studies have shown that there is a relation between alexithymia and dietary habits. OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence of alexithymia and its association with dietary patterns among a sample of communities in the Eastern Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using a sample of 247 participants, were selected using convenience sampling. A well-organized and valid online questionnaire was administered, which covered variables related to socio-demographic data, anthropometric measurements, dietary patterns, and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS). RESULTS The prevalence of Alexithymia was found as 39.3%. Moreover, among the alexithymia and possible alexithymia groups, the majority eat pasta 1-4 times per week (70% and 67% respectively). Alexithemic participants eat fewer vegetables and fruits 46%), while the remaining eat more (70%), p = .001. Only 34% of the cases eat breakfast regularly (p = .005). Furthermore, the cases drink soft drinks and juices at meals more than controls in this study (p = .025). CONCLUSION The present study provides further experimental evidence which supports existing literature that indicating the strong association between alexithymia and unhealthy dietary patterns. Also, Alexithymia prevalence in our study is (39.3%) ; because of the cultural impact of the Saudi environment due to the fact that the face of Saudi women is not revealed, and because the face is one of the main sources of expression of feelings, which makes females unable to express or read feelings well.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this longitudinal study was to examine the extent to which improved levels of binge eating (BE) behaviors, alexithymia, self-esteem, and psychological distress would predict a reduction in body mass at 9-month follow-up, following a lifestyle modification program for weight loss in obese or overweight patients. METHODS A convenience sample of 120 obese or overweight patients were recruited. Body mass index (BMI), binge eating (BES), levels of alexithymia (TAS-20), perceived stress (PSS), depressive symptoms (SDS), and self-esteem (RSE) were assessed during their first medical examination (T1), and after a weight-loss treatment period of 9 months (T2). RESULTS Compared with unimproved patients, improved patients reported a significant decrease in binge eating (p = 0.04) and perceived stress symptoms (p = 0.03), and a significant improvement in self-esteem (p = 0.02) over time. After controlling for gender, self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and perceived stress, baseline BMI (OR = 1.11, 95% CI [1.04,1.19]), ΔBES (OR = 0.99, 95% CI [0.98,0.99]), and ΔTAS-20 (OR = 1.03, 95% CI [1.01,1.05]) significantly and independently predicted a ≥ 5% reduction in body mass from baseline. CONCLUSIONS Our finding supports the suggestion to consider psychological outcomes such as emotional aspects and dysfunctional eating behaviors when planning a weight loss programs to prevent a negative outcome. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Alexithymia and low health literacy are the barriers of self-management. This study aims to examine the relationship between alexithymia, health literacy and diet quality in obese adolescents, and their effects on anthropometric and biochemical markers. METHODS The 20-item Toronto alexithymia scale (TAS-20) was used to determine the alexithymic traits of the adolescents, and "The Newest Vital Sign" (NVS) scales were used to determine their health literacy levels. Diet quality was evaluated with the Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010). RESULTS 39.7% of the obese adolescents were alexithymic, and 69.4% of alexithymics and 35.1% of non-alexithymics had metabolic syndrome. Alexithymic adolescents were lack of adequate health literacy. There were positive correlations between alexithymia scores and insulin, triglyceride, systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels, and all anthropometric values except height (p<0.05). There was a negative correlation between alexithymia scores and health literacy scores (p<0.05). There were negative correlations between health literacy and alexithymia scores, insulin, total cholesterol, triglyceride, ALT, systolic, diastolic blood pressure levels and all anthropometric values except height, and positive correlation was observed between health literacy scores and diet quality (p<0.05). Total HEI score was negatively correlated with waist circumference, neck circumference, body weight, BMI, triglyceride, AST, ALT, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and positively correlated with health literacy and HDL levels (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS As alexithymia severity increased in obese adolescents, the degree of obesity and the incidence of metabolic syndrome increased while the level of health literacy decreased. The increase in health literacy levels, on the other hand, decreased the level of alexithymia and increased the quality of the diet.

Abstract
Elucidating psychological characteristics associated with emotional eating may further inform interventions for this behaviour related to eating psychopathology. The present systematic review aimed to examine the relationship between alexithymia and self-reported emotional eating in adults, and provide a narrative synthesis of the existing literature. Using the PRISMA method for systematic reviews, six databases (MEDLINE, PsycInfo, PsycArticles, PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science) were searched for peer-reviewed, quantitative research published between January 1994 and 20th July 2021, when the searches were conducted. Eligible articles investigated the association between alexithymia, as measured by the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (Bagby, Parker, & Taylor, 1994), and emotional eating, as measured by any validated self-report instrument. Nine cross-sectional articles were reviewed, and risk of bias was assessed using the Appraisal Tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (Downes, Brennan, Williams, & Dean, 2016). A narrative synthesis of articles suggests positive associations between alexithymia and self-reported emotional eating. Five measures of emotional eating were used across articles, with limited but consistent evidence for the relationship between alexithymia and emotional eating as measured by the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (Van strien et al., 1986). Further research is required to add evidence to the nature of the relationship between alexithymia and emotional eating, and to explore mechanisms that might underpin any relationships. Understanding the association between alexithymia and emotional eating may support strategies and interventions for those seeking help for emotional eating and related eating behaviours.

Abstract
Background The cooccurrence of major depression and dyslipidaemia is associated with negative cardiovascular outcome, which seems to justify a better identification of the factors favouring the development of dyslipidaemia in major depressed individuals. In the literature, there are arguments in favour of a special relationship between dyslipidaemia and alexithymia. However, despite a high prevalence of alexithymia in major depressed individuals, no study has investigated the impact of this personality trait on the lipid profile in this particular subpopulation. Given these elements, the aim of this study was therefore to investigate the risk of dyslipidaemia associated with alexithymia in major depressed individuals to allow better cardiovascular prevention in this subpopulation. Subjects and Methods. Demographic and polysomnographic data from 242 major depressed individuals recruited from the clinical database of the sleep laboratory were analysed. Only individuals with a diagnosis of dyslipidaemia according to the diagnostic criteria of the International Diabetes Federation at admission were included in the “dyslipidaemia” group. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk of dyslipidaemia associated with alexithymia in major depressed individuals. Results The prevalence of dyslipidaemia was 43.8% in our sample of major depressed individuals. After adjusting for the main confounding factors, multivariate logistic regression analyses demonstrated that alexithymia was a risk factor for dyslipidaemia in major depressed individuals. Conclusions In this study, we found that alexithymia is a risk factor for dyslipidaemia in major depressed individuals, which seems to justify better identification and adequate management of this personality trait in order to allow a better lipid profile in this subpopulation at high cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Emotional eating, generally defined as (over)-eating in response to negative emotions, has been associated with poor physical and psychological outcomes. During a time of heightened negative affect, it is important to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdown measures on eating behaviours, and further elucidate the ways in which emotional eating is related to emotion dysregulation and impaired abilities to identify emotions (i.e. alexithymia). The aims of this study were to explore perceived changes in eating behaviours in relation to self-reported negative affect during the pandemic and to examine direct and indirect effects of alexithymia on emotional eating. An online questionnaire measured these constructs in the general population of the United Kingdom (n = 136). Findings demonstrated that those who reported changes to their eating behaviours during the pandemic also reported greater levels of depression during the same time frame. Mediation analyses revealed that difficulties identifying and describing feelings both predicted emotional eating indirectly via emotion dysregulation. Findings contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the relationship between alexithymia and emotional eating and describe changes to eating behaviours during COVID-19. We discuss how these findings should be applied, and recommendations for future research. One quarter of participants reported eating more than usual during COVID-19. One third of participants reported eating less healthfully than usual. Difficulty identifying feelings influences emotional eating via emotion dysregulation. Difficulty describing feelings influences emotional eating via emotion dysregulation.

Abstract
We evaluated the association of cardiovascular health in adolescence and young adulthood with alexithymia 25 years later. The study sample (n = 1122) participated in evaluations conducted in 1986 (baseline) and in 2011-2012 (T2). Baseline health factors and behaviors were assessed utilizing seven ideal cardiovascular health metrics (ICH index) including blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, smoking, physical activity, body-mass-index, and diet. The stability of the ICH index was evaluated with corresponding assessments in 2007 (T1). At T2, alexithymia was measured with the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). The main analyses were conducted using ANCOVA and adjusted for depression, age, and present social and lifestyle factors. TAS-20 subscales, Difficulty Identifying Feelings (DIF), Difficulty Describing Feelings (DDF), and Externally Oriented Thinking, were analyzed separately. The ICH index was significantly associated with the TAS-20 total score, as well as both with DIF and DDF. A less ideal cardiovascular health was associated with higher alexithymia scores. However, regarding the separate factors, only the association between non-ideal dietary habits and DIF was significant in the multivariate analyses. The baseline ICH index score was stable from baseline to T1. We conclude that non-ideal cardiovascular lifestyle habits in adolescence and young adulthood are significantly associated with later alexithymia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Alexithymia, a personality construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions, and an externally oriented thinking style, has been associated with a number of stress-related disorders, and physiological markers of stress. We examined the relationships of alexithymia and hair cortisol concentrations (HCC), a measure of long-term cortisol levels, in pregnant women. METHODS Participants were 130 women from the FinnBrain Birth Cohort study. Alexithymia was measured with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Analysis of covariance and regression analyses were used to assess the associations between alexithymia and HCC. Educational level, current depressive symptoms, and body mass index (BMI) were applied as covariates. RESULTS In the adjusted analyses, individuals with moderate to high alexithymic traits had significantly higher HCC (F = 5.11, partial η² = 0.040 , p = 0.026) compared to non-alexithymics. Regression analyses in the whole sample revealed that, of the individual dimensions of alexithymia, Difficulty Identifying Feelings (DIF) was associated with HCC (β = 0.187, t = 2.064, p = 0.041). CONCLUSIONS Alexithymia, and especially its dimension DIF, were associated with higher HCC and, therefore, may be linked to increased chronic physiological stress. Implications for pregnancy outcomes and infant development are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Overweight, obesity, and associated problems in metabolic health are an increasing public health concern. Personality traits and emotional processing styles may play a role in the regulation of food intake and reward. Alexithymia is a personality construct involving difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions and has been previously associated with eating disorders and metabolic problems. We examined associations between alexithymia dimensions, Body Mass Index (BMI) and gestational diabetes in pregnant women. METHODS The participants were 1660 pregnant women living in Finland from the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study. We investigated the associations between alexithymia and its dimensions as measured by the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), overweight, and gestational diabetes. The effects of age, education, and depressive symptoms were controlled for using hierarchical regression analysis. RESULTS Alexithymic individuals had a higher prevalence of overweight compared to those with low or moderate levels of alexithymia (66.0% vs. 34.8%, OR 3.6, adjusted OR 3.6, CI95% 1.9-6.8, p < .001). The dimension of Externally Oriented Thinking (EOT) accounted for this association. Compared to the lowest quartile, women in the highest EOT quartile had a higher BMI (24.3 vs. 25.6, p < .001), and a higher prevalence of overweight [adjusted OR 1.94, CI95% 1.43-2.62, p < .001] and gestational diabetes [OR 1.75, CI95% 1.19-2.55, p = .005]. CONCLUSIONS Alexithymia, and especially its dimension of EOT is associated with overweight and gestational diabetes in pregnant women. Future studies should clarify causality and examine potential mechanisms and associations with pregnancy outcomes and fetal health.
