Preliminary Validation of a Korean Version of the Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale-Fearlessness About Death

The Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide in Italian University Students: Validation of the INQ-15 and the ACSS-FAD

In the frame of the interpersonal psychological theory of suicide (IPTS), Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ-15) assesses thwarted belongingness (TB) and perceived burdensomeness (PB), related to suicidal ideation (SI); Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale-Fearlessness About Death (ACSS-FAD) measures this component which contributes to lethal self-harm. The objective was to evaluate the psychometric properties of INQ-15 and ACSS-FAD in a population of Italian university students. Since the Italian INQ-15 was already validated, we translated ACSS-FAD through a multistage procedure and administered both to 1,665 Italian university students. Factor analysis confirmed a two-factor-related model of INQ-15, one factor of ACSS-FAD, and good reliability for both. We proved the association between INQ-15 and current SI and between ACSS-FAD and lifetime suicidal planning and/or suicide attempt. The convergent and discriminant validities were in line with those of previous studies. Both tools are valid and reliable to assess the constructs associated with suicide outcomes according to IPTS.

The fearlessness about death scale's efficacy for differentiating suicide attempts from non-suicidal self-injury, a meta-analysis

We used multivariate meta-analysis modeling variances and covariances of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and non-suicidal self-injury to investigate if the Fearlessness About Death scale differentiated between suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury. The systematic search yielded 27 studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The association of suicidal ideation with suicide attempts was comparable to the association of suicidal ideation with non-suicidal self-injury. The Fearlessness About Death scale weakened both associations to a comparative degree. These results cast doubt on the clinical utility of the Fearlessness About Death scale, as well as the self-assessment of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury.

Impact of Interpersonal Relationships and Acquired Capability for Suicide on Suicide Attempts: A Cross-Sectional Study

OBJECTIVE

This study examined the path model predicting suicide attempts (SA) by interpersonal need for suicide desire, acquired capability for suicide, the emotion dysregulation, and depression symptoms in people admitted to hospitals for medical treatment.

METHODS

A total of 344 participants (200 depressed patients with attempted suicide, 144 depressed patients with suicidal ideation) were enrolled for this study. Depression, anxiety, emotion regulation, interpersonal needs, and acquired capability for suicide were evaluated. A model with pathways from emotion regulation difficulties and interpersonal needs to SA was proposed. Participants were divided into two groups according to the presence of SA or suicidal ideation.

RESULTS

Acquired capability for suicide mediated the path from depression to SA. In the path model, difficulties in emotion regulation and interpersonal needs predicted depression significantly. Although depression itself was not significantly related to acquired capability for suicide, depression was significantly related to acquired capability for suicide in suicide attempter group.

CONCLUSION

Interventions with two factors affecting SA will clarify the suicide risk and contribute to finding risk factors.

Examining psychometric properties of the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire among college students in India

BACKGROUND

With the second-highest population in the world, suicide-related deaths in India are high, and adults under 30 are particularly at an increased risk. However, empirical examinations of factors contributing to suicide in India and assessments of reliability and validity of self-report measures assessing these constructs are rare.

AIMS

The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ).

MATERIALS & METHODS

Undergraduate students in India (N = 432) completed the INQ and questionnaires assessing suicidal ideation, depression, fearlessness about death, and pain tolerance.

RESULTS

Confirmatory factor analyses of the 15-item INQ indicated that after removing three items assessing perceived burdensomeness, the two-factor structure of INQ demonstrated acceptable fit with good internal consistency for each of the subscales (α = .84-.90). In line with the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicidal behavior (IPTS), thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness interacted to predict suicidal ideation. Additionally, these constructs were positively associated with suicidal ideation and depression, and weakly correlated with fearlessness about death and pain tolerance.

DISCUSSION

Results support the relevance of the IPTS for understanding suicidal ideation among college students in India.

CONCLUSION

The results suggest that modified INQ demonstrates strong internal consistency, as well as good construct, criterion, and discriminant validity among Indian college students.

Exploring the scope and structure of suicide capability

OBJECTIVE

Recent theories of suicide suggest that a construct called "capability for suicide" facilitates the progression from suicidal thoughts to attempts. Various measures of capability have been developed to assess different parts of the construct, but studies report inconsistent findings regarding reliability, validity, and structure. The present study pooled items from multiple measures to identify distinct, reliable, and valid domains of suicide capability.

METHOD

We administered items from several suicide capability measures to an online sample of US adults (n = 387), and utilized exploratory factor analysis to identify distinct domains of capability. We then examined the internal consistencies of and intercorrelations among these domains, as well as their associations with suicide attempts.

RESULTS

Findings identified three domains of suicide capability: fearlessness about death, practical capability, and pain tolerance. These domains were internally consistent (αs = 0.80-0.92), and relatively independent from one another (intercorrelations = 0.15-0.35). Finally, each of these domains was moderately elevated among attempters compared to ideators (although only fearlessness about death and practical capability offered unique information about attempter status).

CONCLUSIONS

Findings suggest that fearlessness about death, practical capability, and pain tolerance can be measured reliably, and may be relevant for understanding which ideators make attempts.

Validation of a Chinese Version of the Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale

This study aimed to revise and validate a Chinese Version of the Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale (ACSS-CV). In study 1 of 395 Chinese college students, a two-factor model comprising fearlessness about death and pain tolerance achieved satisfactory model fit. In study 2 of 491 different students, the ACSS-CV had good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. The ACSS-CV may be considered a useful instrument for measuring the acquired capability for suicide in Chinese college students.

Thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness in Korean college students: Psychometric properties and cultural considerations for the interpersonal needs Questionnaire-10

The present study aimed to validate a Korean version of the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire in a college student sample. Three hundred and one students completed the scale and other measures of suicidal ideation, loneliness, interpersonal support, responsibility to family, meaning in life, fearlessness about death, anxiety and depression. Results revealed that the scale has two-factor structure (thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness) and it also has good internal consistency, convergent validity and discriminant validity. Cultural comparisons showed that the levels of thwarted belongingness in Korean college students were higher than those in the U.S. college students.
