Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study utilizes visual analysis methods to retrospectively examine the evolution and trends in exercise interventions for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) research from 2011 to 2022. DESIGN Bibliometric and visualization analysis review. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Using the Web of Science database, the literature search range is from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2022, with the language specified as English and document type set to Article. METHODS Visual analysis was used to analyze literature in the field of exercise interventions for KOA, with KOA and exercise interventions as the key search terms. Visualization maps for countries/regions were created using Tableau and Scimago Graphica software. Institutional, author, and keyword visualization maps were drawn using CiteSpace and VOSviewer software. RESULTS In total, 3137 articles were included in the visual analysis. The United States emerged as the leading country in terms of publication volume and contribution. Moreover, developed countries such as the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, and Canada have established close and stable cooperative relationships. The University of Melbourne stood out as the institution with both the highest publication volume and centrality. At the forefront of research output in this field was Bennell K.L. from the University of Melbourne. The journal with the highest co-citation frequency was Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. The keyword clustering map highlighted an evolution in the field of exercise interventions for KOA, emphasizing 8 key research themes spanning knee osteoarthritis, serum cartilage, osteoarthritis initiative, patellofemoral pain, total knee arthroplasty, exercise-induced hypoalgesia, isometric exercise, and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Burst analysis revealed that older adult was the earliest and most prominent keyword, with contemporary topics such as patellofemoral pain, safety, musculoskeletal disorder, and neuromuscular exercise considered as research hotspots and future directions in this field. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The global attention on exercise interventions for KOA research is expanding, emphasizing the importance of strengthened connections among developing countries and collaborative author groups. Recent trends have shifted toward topics such as neuromuscular training, treatment safety, and musculoskeletal disorders, whereas research interest in patellofemoral pain remains unabated. Neuromuscular training for KOA represents the current frontier in this field. Future research should delve into the effects of diverse types of exercise interventions for KOA on neuromuscular injury and recovery, exploring feasibility and safety to formulate personalized exercise plans for patients with KOA.

Abstract
Objective of this study was to investigate the effects of physical exercise on muscle function of the knee, pain and quality of life in postmenopausal women with knee osteoarthritis (OA). An electronic search was conducted of the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, LILACS and PEDro databases for relevant articles published up to September 2023. Only randomized clinical trials with interventions involving physical exercise of any modality in postmenopausal women with knee OA were included. This review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and the Cochrane Recommendations. Methodological quality of the studies selected was assessed using the PEDro scale and the evidence was synthesized using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation scale. Among the 169 articles identified, five were included in the present systematic review and enabled meta-analysis of the outcomes physical function, pain and stiffness. The findings demonstrated the effectiveness of physical exercise in improving physical function, assessed through the Six-Minute Walk Test and the WOMAC scale's physical function domain, compared to the control group. However, no significant differences were observed in pain or stiffness outcomes between the treatment and control groups. Unfortunately, insufficient data precluded a meta-analysis for knee muscle function and quality of life outcomes. Despite the potential of physical exercise to enhance physical function in postmenopausal women with knee OA, the study highlights a lack of standardization in assessment tools and tests, limiting the feasibility of meta-analysis. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE To determine the effects of resistance training (RT) on symptoms, function, and lower limb muscle strength in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), and to determine the optimal dose-response relationships. DATA SOURCES We searched the PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases from inception to January 23, 2022. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Randomized controlled trials that examined the effects of RT in KOA patients (mean age ≥50 years) were included. DATA SYNTHESIS We applied Hedges' g of the random-effects model to calculate the between-subject standardized mean difference (SMDbs). A random-effects metaregression was calculated to explain the influence of key training variables on the effectiveness of RT. We used the Grading of Recommendations Assessments, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) method to appraise the certainty of evidence. RESULTS A total of 46 studies with 4289 participants were included. The analysis revealed moderate effects of RT on symptoms and function (SMDbs =-0.52; 95% CI: -0.64 to -0.40), and lower limb muscle strength (SMDbs = 0.53; 95% CI: 0.42 to 0.64) in the intervention group compared with the control group. The results of the metaregression revealed that only the variable "training period" (P< .001) had significant effects on symptoms, function, and lower limb muscle strength, and the 4 to 8 weeks of training subgroup showed greater effects than other subgroups (SMDbs =-0.70, -0.91 to -0.48; SMDbs = 0.76, 0.56 to 0.96). CONCLUSIONS Compared with inactive treatments, RT is strongly recommended to improve symptoms, function, and muscle strength in individuals with KOA. Dose-response relationship analysis showed that 4 to 8 weeks of RT had more benefits.

Abstract
To evaluate the impact of the Bad Ragaz ring method (BRRM) in hot spring water for knee osteoarthritis (KOA), this prospective study enrolled KOA patients treated at the hospital between March 2020 and December 2020. The primary outcome was the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) osteoarthritis index score. A total of 60 patients were included, with 30 participants in the BRRM group and 30 patients in the non-BRRM group, respectively. The mean age was 56.4 ± 10.2 years (13 females), and the duration of disease was 5.0 ± 2.2 years in the BRRM group. The mean age was 56.0 ± 11.3 years (14 females), and the disease duration was 4.7 ± 2.1 years in the non-BRRM group. There were no differences between the 2 groups in the pain, stiffness, and function scores of the WOMAC (all P > .05) before treatment. The pre post difference in total WOMAC scores (56.57 ± 12.45 vs 36.81 ± 13.51, Cohen d = 1.52, P < .01) between the 2 groups was statistically significant. Compared with the non-BRRM group, the BRRM group showed lower scores for pain (6.5 ± 1.5 vs 8.1 ± 2.9, Cohen d = -0.69, P = .01), stiffness (2.7 ± 1.0 vs 5.0 ± 1.2, Cohen d = -1.93, P < .01), and function (14.8 ± 6.6 vs 26.7 ± 7.5, Cohen d = -1.68, P < .01) after treatment. In conclusion, the BRRM might improve the pain and function of patients with KOA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to assess the effects of high-intensity strength training versus low-intensity strength training or routine care in adults with knee osteoarthritis. DESIGN PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched up to March 10, 2021. The outcomes were knee pain, knee function, quality of life, and adverse events. RESULTS Ten studies of 892 subjects with knee osteoarthritis were included. No significant differences were found between the high-intensity strength training group and the low-intensity strength training or routine care group in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index pain score, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score pain score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index stiffness score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index physical function score, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score symptom score, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score activities of daily living score, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score sport and recreation score, Timed Up and Go result, gait velocity, walking time, peak torque of the knee extensors, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score quality of life score, and adverse event incidence (all P > 0.05). The peak torque of the knee flexors at 120-degree per sec contraction (pooled weighted mean difference, 7.520; 95% confidence interval, 1.256 to 13.784; P = 0.019) in the high-intensity group was improved significantly than that in the low-intensity training or routine care group. CONCLUSIONS High-intensity strength training may have similar effects in improving knee pain, knee function, and quality of life, with comparable safety to low-intensity strength training and routine care.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) has a very high incidence worldwide and has become a very common joint disease in the elderly. Currently, the treatment methods for OA include surgery, drug therapy, and exercise therapy. In recent years, the treatment of certain diseases by exercise has received increasing research and attention. Proper exercise can improve the physiological function of various organs of the body. At present, the treatment of OA is usually symptomatic. Limited methods are available for the treatment of OA according to its pathogenesis, and effective intervention has not been developed to slow down the progress of OA from the molecular level. Only by clarifying the mechanism of exercise treatment of OA and the influence of different exercise intensities on OA patients can we choose the appropriate exercise prescription to prevent and treat OA. This review mainly expounds the mechanism that exercise alleviates the pathological changes of OA by affecting the degradation of the ECM, apoptosis, inflammatory response, autophagy, and changes of ncRNA, and summarizes the effects of different exercise types on OA patients. Finally, it is found that different exercise types, exercise intensity, exercise time and exercise frequency have different effects on OA patients. At the same time, suitable exercise prescriptions are recommended for OA patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effect of Aquatic High Intensity Interval Training (AHIIT) on cardiometabolic and physical health markers in women. METHODS Systematic search used 7 databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane, Embase, CINAL complete, PsycINFO). The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) score was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies. Clinical trials compared AHIIT with a control group that receive no exercise training. We integrated randomized controlled trials published in English, and participants were women aged ≥18 years. The outcome of interest was the change in cardiometabolic and physical health markers. RESULTS Among 242 articles screened, 18 articles (13 trials) were included in this meta-analysis comparing AHIIT (n = 261) with a control group (n = 215). The median PEDro score was 5.5 out of 10 (range, 4-8). AHIIT significantly improved peak oxygen uptake (Hedges' g 0.610; 95% CI 0.277-0.943; P < 0.001), reduced resting heart rate (Hedges' g -0.495; 95% CI -0.866 to -0.124; P < 0.05), as well as chair to stand test. (Hedges' g 0.548; 95% CI 0.019 to 1.077; P < 0.05). CONCLUSION AHIIT has a moderate effect in improving cardiometabolic and physical health markers in women.

Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disease. Cartilage and subchondral bone degeneration, as well as synovitis, are the main pathological changes associated with knee osteoarthritis. Mechanical overload, inflammation, metabolic factors, hormonal changes, and aging play a vital role in aggravating the progression of knee osteoarthritis. The main treatments for knee osteoarthritis include pharmacotherapy, physiotherapy, and surgery. However, pharmacotherapy has many side effects, and surgery is only suitable for patients with end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Exercise training, as a complementary and adjunctive physiotherapy, can prevent cartilage degeneration, inhibit inflammation, and prevent loss of the subchondral bone and metaphyseal bone trabeculae. Increasing evidence indicates that exercise training can improve pain, stiffness, joint dysfunction, and muscle weakness in patients with knee osteoarthritis. There are several exercise trainings options for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, including aerobic exercise, strength training, neuromuscular exercise, balance training, proprioception training, aquatic exercise, and traditional exercise. For Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) experimental animals, those exercise trainings can reduce inflammation, delay cartilage and bone degeneration, change tendon, and muscle structure. In this review, we summarize the main symptoms of knee osteoarthritis, the mechanisms of exercise training, and the therapeutic effects of different exercise training methods on patients with knee osteoarthritis. We hope this review will allow patients in different situations to receive appropriate exercise therapy for knee osteoarthritis, and provide a reference for further research and clinical application of exercise training for knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract
Introduction. Exercise programs in the aquatic environment have as their main objective the improvement and maintenance of physical capacity/ capability, these being in continuous development and diversification. Water exercise amplifies the effects of general physical exercise, by allowing a more precise control over the movement of each body segment and of the body as a whole. The aquatic environment offers a number of beneficial effects compared to ones offered by the terrestrial environment. The benefits obtained through the aquatic activities are fundamental and are reflected throughout the entire body including both motor, functional and aesthetic level.
Material and method. The objective of this study is represented by the identification of new forms of physical exercise that will increase the motor’s capacity. In order to achieve this goal, several methodological requirements were met, such as: successive engagement of the joints and muscle groups in effort (starting with the neck’s muscles, shoulders, arms, torso and legs, simultaneously with scapular-humeral joints, spine and coxo-femoral joints and legs), the gradually usage of exercises, starting with the most basic and then increasing the complexity of the exercises, the usage of the accessible exercises in the beginning of the training, executed with high amplitude and reduced speed, focusing on the correctness of the execution, the selection and the adequate/ appropriately usage of the initial positions according to the subject’s particularities and the shape/form of the exercise, the optimal control of the effort, achieved through a number of iterations, optimal execution time and breaks, the sets of general physical exercises will consist of sets of 8-12 exercises/reps, the principle of symmetry in the execution of the exercises has to be respected, the continuity of practicing a set of exercises for 6 to 8 consecutive lessons, the recommended work method is fragmented-imitative, efficiently combining the explication with the demonstration, the number of repetitions and the movement’s correction.
Results and discussions. Analyzing results obtained after the evaluation, we have noticed significant growth in the functional and motor capacities.
Conclusions. The systematization of water activities on objective criteria effectively contributes to their knowledge, while allowing them to be included in the spectrum of recreational, sporting, relaxing or therapeutic activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is increasingly more prevalent and significant number of patients require knee arthroplasty. Although knee arthroplasty is generally successful, it takes months to recover physical function. Preoperative physical function is known to predict postoperative outcomes and exercise can improve preoperative physical function. However, patients with KOA have difficulty exercise on land due to pain and stiffness, while water exercise can be better tolerated. We hypothesized that preoperative water exercise to improve preoperative physical function will improve postoperative outcomes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS We enrolled 43 participants who were scheduled for elective TKA in 4-8 weeks and scored at or below 50th percentile in mobility assessment tool-sf (MAT-sf). All enrolled participants were assessed on 1) clinical osteoarthritis symptom severity using Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), 2) physical function using Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), 3) self-reported mobility using Mobility Assessment Tool-short form (MAT-sf), 4) depression using Geriatric Depression Scale-short form (GDS-sf), 5) cognitive function using Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Blood samples for high-sensitivity-C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were stored at - 80 °C then all samples were analyzed together. All the enrolled participants were randomly assigned to the aquatic exercise intervention (AEI) or usual care group. Sixty minute sessions of AEI was conducted three times a week for 4-8 weeks. Participants in both groups were evaluated within 1 week before their scheduled surgery, as well as 4 weeks after the surgery. RESULTS The mean age was 67.1 (±6.2), 44% were female, 74% were White. There is no statistically significant difference in combined outcome of any complication, unscheduled ER visit, and disposition to nursing home or rehab facility by AEI. However, AEI was associated with more favorable outcomes: WOMAC scores (p < 0.01), chair-stand (p = 0.019), MAT-sf as well as improved depression (p = 0.043) and cognition (p = 0.008). CONCLUSION 4-8 weeks of aquatic exercise intervention resulted in improved functional outcomes as well as improved depression and cognition in elderly patients undergoing TKA. A larger study is warranted to explore the role of water exercise in clinical and functional outcomes of TKA.

Abstract
Introduction. Exercise programs in the aquatic environment have as their main objective the improvement and maintenance of physical capacity/ capability, these being in continuous development and diversification. Water exercise amplifies the effects of general physical exercise, by allowing a more precise control over the movement of each body segment and of the body as a whole. The aquatic environment offers a number of beneficial effects compared to ones offered by the terrestrial environment. The benefits obtained through the aquatic activities are fundamental and are reflected throughout the entire body including both motor, functional and aesthetic level. Material and method. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Systematically review and synthesize guidelines, systematic reviews, or randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between April 1, 2019 and April 30, 2020 which evaluated or made recommendations for rehabilitation of persons with osteoarthritis. DESIGN Five electronic databases (Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINHAL, Web of Science) were searched with a comprehensive search strategy. Guidelines for rehabilitation of persons with osteoarthritis, and systematic reviews and RCTs evaluating osteoarthritis rehabilitation that included at least one patient-reported outcome measure and/or clinical test of function were included. Two authors independently screened records and assessed methodological quality using the AGREE-II (guidelines), AMSTAR-2 (systematic reviews) or PEDro scale (RCTs). Data were extracted to summarize included records and a narrative synthesis of findings related to core recommended osteoarthritis rehabilitation treatments performed. RESULTS Of 2,479 potential records, 253 records were reviewed. Two guidelines, 18 systematic reviews and 38 RCTs were included. 84% (n = 49) of included records related to knee osteoarthritis, 13% (n = 8) to hip, 10% (n = 6) to hand, 3% (n = 2) to mixed, and 1% (n = 1) to foot osteoarthritis. Exercise-therapy, methods to deliver exercise-therapy remotely, and approaches to facilitate exercise-therapy behaviour change were the most commonly evaluated interventions (n = 27). 94% of systematic reviews and 63% of RCTs rated high-quality. CONCLUSIONS Osteoarthritis rehabilitation research continues to focus on knee osteoarthritis and exercise-based interventions. Emerging topics include rehabilitation of comorbid populations, exercise behaviour change and technology supports. A better understanding of rehabilitation of osteoarthritis in joints other than the knee, and methods to determine and promote ideal exercise-therapy prescription are needed.
