The structural change and influencing factors of carbon transfer network in global value chains

Based on the gross trade accounting method and WIOD data, this paper quantifies the global carbon transfer from 2000 to 2014. The social network analysis and temporal exponential random graph model (TERGM) are employed to investigate the structural change and influencing factors of global carbon transfer network from a global value chains (GVCs) perspective. Results show that the deepening of the GVC division connection has enhanced the relations in global carbon transfer network, and the low reciprocity and high disassortativity lie in the difference in GVC division positions among economies. Block model analysis manifests that Plate Ⅱ acts as the engine plate in the network which consists of China and the other four economies. The GVC division connection and relative GVC division position significantly facilitate the formation of carbon emission transfer relations. Moreover, economies' attribute effects and endogenous network structure effects are non-negligible important determinants of network formation.

An Experimental Study on the Scalability of Recent Node Centrality Metrics in Sparse Complex Networks

Node centrality measures are among the most commonly used analytical techniques for networks. They have long helped analysts to identify “important” nodes that hold power in a social context, where damages could have dire consequences for transportation applications, or who should be a focus for prevention in epidemiology. Given the ubiquity of network data, new measures have been proposed, occasionally motivated by emerging applications or by the ability to interpolate existing measures. Before analysts use these measures and interpret results, the fundamental question is: are these measures likely to complete within the time window allotted to the analysis? In this paper, we comprehensively examine how the time necessary to run 18 new measures (introduced from 2005 to 2020) scales as a function of the number of nodes in the network. Our focus is on giving analysts a simple and practical estimate for sparse networks. As the time consumption depends on the properties in the network, we nuance our analysis by considering whether the network is scale-free, small-world, or random. Our results identify that several metrics run in the order of O(nlogn) and could scale to large networks, whereas others can require O(n²) or O(n³) and may become prime targets in future works for approximation algorithms or distributed implementations.

Bayesian dynamic network actor models with application to South Korean COVID-19 patient movement data

Motivated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this article introduces Bayesian dynamic network actor models for the analysis of infected individuals’ movements in South Korea during the first three months of 2020. The relational event data modelling framework makes use of network statistics capturing the structure of movement events from and to several country’s municipalities. The fully probabilistic Bayesian approach allows to quantify the uncertainty associated to the relational tendencies explaining where and when movement events are established and where they are directed. The observed patient movements’ patterns at an early stage of the pandemic can provide interesting insights about the spread of the disease in the Asian country.

Models of continuous-time networks with tie decay, diffusion, and convection

The study of temporal networks in discrete time has yielded numerous insights into time-dependent networked systems in a wide variety of applications. However, for many complex systems, it is useful to develop continuous-time models of networks and to compare them to associated discrete models. In this paper, we study several continuous-time network models and examine discrete approximations of them both numerically and analytically. To consider continuous-time networks, we associate each edge in a graph with a time-dependent tie strength that can take continuous non-negative values and decays in time after the most recent interaction. We investigate how the moments of the tie strength evolve with time in several models, and we explore-both numerically and analytically-criteria for the emergence of a giant connected component in some of these models. We also briefly examine the effects of the interaction patterns of continuous-time networks on the contagion dynamics of a susceptible-infected-recovered model of an infectious disease.
