Abstract
We describe the case of a 41-year-old woman with primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) who presented multiple recurrences of breast amyloidosis. Each recurrence of breast amyloidosis showed different sonographic features, potentially mimicking malignancy. We briefly discuss the possible cause of this variability in imaging features based on the radiologic-histologic correlation.

Abstract
Background Amyloid tumor of the breast is a rare disease, which was first reported in 1973. To date, only six cases have been reported in Japan. Case presentation A 45-year-old woman who had a medical history of Sjogren’s syndrome presented with a lump of 3 cm in diameter on the outer side of the right breast. Mammography showed no abnormality. Ultrasonography showed a well-defined and rough hypoechoic mass of 32 mm in diameter at the site of the lump. With suspicion of breast cancer, an ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy was performed. For pathological diagnosis, hematoxylin and eosin staining showed deposits of nonstructural substances in the interstitium. The specimen stained red with Congo red staining and showed green birefringence under a polarizing microscope. Thus, the mass was diagnosed as an amyloid tumor. Since the patient had Sjogren’s syndrome, it was considered a breast finding of autoimmune disease. We considered further therapy to be unnecessary, and annual follow-up was recommended. Conclusions We diagnosed the mass as an amyloid tumor by an ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy without resection. The patient had no systemic symptoms suspected systemic amyloidosis, and we diagnosed localized amyloidosis. An amyloid tumor of the breast may show findings suggestive of breast cancer. Pathological diagnosis before surgery is important to avoid excessive invasion. If deposits of nonstructural substances are observed by hematoxylin and eosin staining, Congo red staining should be added.

Abstract
Localized amyloidosis in the breast is a very rare disease and may mimic malignant lesions. A 60-year-old woman who had a history of breast-conserving surgery presents with a new a well-defined oval opacity accompanied by many round tight clustered micro- and macrocalcifications on mammograms. It could not be visualized sonographically due to the intense posterior acoustic shadowing of the fat necrosis areas and contrast enhancement was not detected in this area on the dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance images. At pathological examination breast amyloidosis was detected. Amyloidosis of the breast is a rare disease, but it can mimic malignancy and should be included in the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
Background Primary amyloidosis of the breast is an unusual benign disease that mostly occurs in postmenopausal elderly women. Amyloidosis is the deposition of amorphous protein within tissues. Breast biopsy is necessary to make a definite diagnosis in order to avoid unnecessary surgical methods. Localized primary amyloidosis of the breast has a good prognosis. However, secondary amyloidosis is a systemic disease and has a poor prognosis. Case presentation We report the case of a 77-year-old female with primary amyloidosis of the breast. She noticed a lump in her left breast. Mammographic and ultrasonographic examinations indicated breast cancer. However, core needle biopsy showed amyloidosis, not cancer of the breast. For further examinations, the patient visited the outpatient clinics of the hematology, dermatology, and gastroenterology departments. She underwent bone marrow aspiration, computed tomography, cardiac ultrasonography, random skin biopsy, gastrofiberscopy, and colonofiberscopy. Plasma cell myeloma and systemic amyloidosis were ruled out, and localized breast amyloidosis was highly suspected. Lumpectomy was performed to make a definite diagnosis, and histological evaluations revealed that this patient had localized amyloidosis of the breast, and the deposited amyloid protein was of the amyloid light chain kappa type. Conclusions Breast biopsy is necessary in order to avoid unnecessary surgical technique. A diagnosis should be achieved only through a histological evaluation. The main treatment of localized primary amyloidosis of the breast is surgical removal.
