Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical outcomes of chemical ciliary body ablation (CBA) in dogs with chronic glaucoma and concurrent anterior lens luxation and to investigate adverse ocular effects of this procedure. PROCEDURES Retrospective review of 17 dogs (18 eyes) with chronic glaucoma and concurrent anterior lens luxation treated with intravitreal gentamicin with or without dexamethasone sodium phosphate or triamcinolone acetonide. Data collected included signalment, concurrent ocular disease, topical medications prescribed, follow-up duration, and intraocular pressure (IOP) pretreatment, posttreatment, and at the last follow-up visit. Success was defined as an IOP <25 mmHg with no additional procedures or ocular hypotensive medications at the last examination to date. RESULTS The success rate for CBA in dogs with chronic glaucoma and concurrent anterior lens luxation was 88.9% without the need of additional surgical or ocular hypotensive therapies. Glaucoma was suspected to be secondary to lens luxation in 72.2% of cases. The most common postoperative complications were phthisis bulbi (50.0%), keratoconjunctivitis sicca (27.8%), and uveitis (27.8%). Long-term management with topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, corticosteroids, and/or immunomodulators was needed in 70.6% of cases. CONCLUSIONS CBA with intravitreal injection of gentamicin is effective at maintaining an IOP <25 mmHg in dogs with chronic glaucoma and concurrent anterior lens luxation. Management of postoperative sequelae commonly requires continued use of topical medications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report preliminary results of MP-TSCP in canine patients with glaucoma while evaluating sweep velocity, treatment efficacy, and safety utilizing standardized surgical parameters. ANIMAL STUDIED Client-owned dogs that underwent MP-TSCP at a veterinary referral hospital. PROCEDURE Medical records of 19 eyes (14 dogs) treated with MP-TSCP were reviewed. Eleven eyes were treated with a 10 s/sweep (s) velocity and 8 eyes with a 20 s/s. Laser duty cycle was set at 31.3%, mean laser energy was 2766 mW, and mean duration was 120 s per hemisphere. Minimum post-operative follow-up was 6 months. Outcomes of intraocular pressure (IOP), vision status, degree of antiglaucoma medications, and complications were evaluated. RESULTS There was a significantly lower median (IQR) IOP (<25 mmHg) at each timepoint postoperatively compared to IOP pre-operatively (p < 0.05). The overall success rate for IOP control at 6 months was 84%, 100% for the 10 s/s and 62.5% for the 20 s/s. Vision was preserved in 10/11 (90%) eyes from the 10 s/s group and 4/8 (50%) eyes from the 20 s/s group at 6 months. Average number of glaucoma medications in the 10 s/s group decreased from 4.4 to 1.5 and from 3.3 to 2.5 in the 20 s/s group. Post-operative complications were mild and resolved within 1 week. CONCLUSIONS MP-TSCP is a non-invasive treatment alternative for canine glaucoma. Employing higher energy levels rendered long-term IOP control while retaining a high safety profile with minimal postoperative complications. There was no statistical difference between a 10 s/s and 20 s/s surgical velocity, both leading to successful surgical outcomes up to 6 months post-operatively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical application and outcome of MicroPulse™ transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (MP-TSCPC) treatment in horses with glaucoma. ANIMALS STUDIED Four client-owned horses with primary (n = 2) or secondary (n = 2) glaucoma. METHODS Horses were treated with MP-TSCPC under standing sedation with a minimum of 30 days of follow-up (range 30-1241 days). Affected eyes were treated with a 31.3% duty cycle and 3000 mW laser power for a total of 180 s. Data collected included signalment, pre- and post-procedure intraocular pressures (IOPs), laser settings, medications, complications, and repeat therapy. RESULTS Four horses (5 eyes) received at least one treatment with MP-TSCPC. Mean preoperative IOP was 44 mmHg (range 33-49 mmHg). The immediate mean postoperative IOP was 34 mmHg (4 eyes; range 19-55 mmHg). At 1 week, IOP was 38 mmHg (5 eyes; range 21-80 mmHg), at 2 weeks was 40 mmHg (3 eyes, range 17-80 mmHg), at 1 month was 35 mmHg (5 eyes; range 20-50 mmHg), at 3 months was 18 mmHg (2 eyes; range 14-21 mmHg), at 6 months was 35 mmHg (2 eyes; range 30-39 mmHg), and at >300 days was 24 mmHg (3 eyes; range 18-29 mmHg). Complications included corneal ulceration (n = 1 eye), uncontrolled IOP (n = 3 eyes), and need for repeat treatment (n = 2 eyes). CONCLUSIONS MP-TSCPC used with the above-described settings was unsuccessful in treating the majority of cases. Future studies should be targeted at primary glaucoma cases and with use of alternative laser settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the long-term outcome of endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) for the treatment of primary and secondary glaucoma in dogs. ANIMALS STUDIED Retrospective review of dogs that underwent ECP at two referral centers from 2004 to 2023. PROCEDURES Medical records of 389 eyes (301 dogs) following ECP were reviewed. Outcomes evaluated included follow-up time, intraocular pressure (IOP), vision status, additional ECP procedures performed, number of medications, and complications. Patient and surgical variables and their association with IOP control and vision maintenance were evaluated. RESULTS Median follow-up time was 18 months. IOP remained controlled in 90% and 95% of patients at 1 and 2 years, respectively, following ECP. IOP was controlled long-term (2 years) in cases with primary (88%) and secondary (99%) glaucoma. Post-operative vision was maintained in 63% and 49% of eyes at approximately 1 and 2 years, respectively. Median time to vision loss was 6.5 months. Repeat ECP was required in 15.4% of eyes at a median of 19 days post-operatively. Eyes that underwent more than one ECP surgery had a significantly longer median time to blindness (13.8 months) than those that underwent a single ECP procedure (3.6 months; p = .0003). The median number of anti-glaucoma medications decreased from three pre-operatively to one at 1- and 2-year post-operatively. Complications included corneal ulceration (28%), blinding hypotony (11%), retinal detachment (11%), and hyphema (10%). CONCLUSION Endolaser cyclophotocoagulation is an effective surgery for maintaining long-term IOP control and extending vision in canine patients with glaucoma refractory to medical management.

Abstract
Primary glaucoma is a painful, progressive, and blinding disease reported in many canine breeds, characterized by intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation in the absence of antecedent intraocular disease. Clinical observations of dogs with primary glaucoma suggest that many affected eyes develop concurrent intraocular inflammation in addition to elevated IOP. In this work, we summarize the current knowledge that relates inflammation to primary glaucoma in dogs, reviewing studies focused on genetics, physiology, histopathology, bioanalysis of ocular fluids, therapeutics, and clinical outcomes of glaucomatous patients. Through disruption of the blood-aqueous and blood-retinal barriers, pigment dispersion, and biochemical changes to the aqueous humor and tear film, the pathogenesis of canine primary glaucoma appears to involve inflammatory changes to various extents and with various consequences from the front to the back of the eye. Among others, inflammation further impacts IOP by reducing aqueous humor outflow at the level of the iridocorneal angle and accelerates vision loss by promoting neuronal degeneration. As such, the vicious cycle of ocular inflammation and IOP elevation might warrant the use of anti-inflammatory medications as a core component of the treatment regime for dogs with primary glaucoma, either therapeutically (i.e., actively glaucomatous eye) or prophylactically in the yet unaffected contralateral eye.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) is a complex multifactorial condition caused by loss of ocular surface homeostasis from quantitative and/or qualitative tear film deficiency. Schirmer tear test (STT) is often the only diagnostic test used to assess for DED in veterinary practice. STT is invaluable in the diagnosis and monitoring of quantitative tear film deficiency (i.e., keratoconjunctivitis sicca); however, it is not sufficient to optimize therapy and fully recognize other contributing factors for the disturbance in ocular surface homeostasis. The present work reviews diagnostic tests for assessing aqueous tear production in veterinary medicine, as well as the quality of tears, corneal epithelial barrier integrity, and the lacrimal functional unit.

Abstract
PURPOSE Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been demonstrated to possess great potential in preclinical models. An efficient biomanufacturing platform is necessary for scale up production for clinical therapeutic applications. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential differences in neuro-regenerative properties of MSC-derived EVs generated in 2D versus 3D culture systems. METHOD Human bone marrow MSCs (BM-MSCs) were cultured in 2D monolayer and 3D bioreactor systems. EVs were isolated using ultracentrifugation followed by size and concentration measurements utilizing dynamic light scattering (NanoSight) and by fluorescence staining (ExoView). Mouse trigeminal ganglia (TG) neurons were isolated from BALB/c mice and cultured in the presence or absence of EVs derived from 2D or 3D culture systems. Neuronal growth and morphology were monitored over 5 days followed by immunostaining for β3 tubulin. Confocal images were analyzed by Neurolucida software to obtain the density and length of the neurites. RESULTS The NanoSight tracking analysis revealed a remarkable increase (24-fold change) in the concentration of EVs obtained from the 3D versus 2D culture condition. ExoView analysis showed a significantly higher concentration of CD63, CD81, and CD9 markers in the EVs derived from 3D versus 2D conditions. Furthermore, a notable shift toward a more heterogeneous phenotype was observed in the 3D-derived EVs compared to those from 2D culture systems. EVs derived from both culture conditions remarkably induced neurite growth and elongation after 5 days in culture compared to untreated control. Neurolucida analysis of the immunostaining images (β3 tubulin) showed a significant increase in neurite length in TG neurons treated with 3D- versus 2D-derived EVs (3301.5 μm vs. 1860.5 μm, P < 0.05). Finally, Sholl analysis demonstrated a significant increase in complexity of the neuronal growth in neurons treated with 3D- versus 2D-derived EVs (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study highlights considerable differences in EVs obtained from different culture microenvironments, which could have implications for their therapeutic effects and potency. The 3D culture system seems to provide a preferred environment that modulates the paracrine function of the cells and the release of a higher number of EVs with enhanced biophysical properties and functions in the context of neurite elongation and growth.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report the incidence and outcomes of microbial keratitis (MK) following cyclophotocoagulation (CPC) for treatment of refractory childhood glaucoma (CG) at a single center over a period of 6 years. METHODS In this cohort study, the medical records of children with CG who underwent CPC and subsequently presented with MK from 2014 to 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. Data were collected on age, type of glaucoma, surgeries before MK, CPC parameters, interval between CPC and MK, presenting symptoms of MK, infiltrate location, bacterial isolates, MK treatment, and outcomes. RESULTS Among the 312 children who underwent CPC during the study period, 37 eyes of 33 children had MK, with an incidence of 1.8% (95% CI, 0.3-3.2). The median interval between CPC and MK was 4 years (IQR, 2.7-7.4). CPC was repeated once in 20 eyes (54%) and twice in 4 (11%). In 20 eyes, there was no pain at MK onset. The primary isolates were Streptococcus pneumoniae (12/27 [22%]) and Staphylococcus epidermis (8/27 [30%]). MK resolved in 17 eyes (46%) after treatment; 8 eyes (22%) underwent evisceration or had phthisis, and keratoplasty failed in 6 eyes (16%). The absence of pain at presentation with MK was negatively associated with resolution (OR = 5.0 [95% CI, 1.1-23.8]; P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS The absence of pain at MK onset may be a proxy for neurotrophic keratitis after CPC and is linked to poor response to management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the long-term (>1 year) outcome of MicroPulse transscleral diode cyclophotocoagulation (MP-TSCP) in dogs. ANIMALS STUDIED Client owned dogs that underwent MP-TSCP at a veterinary referral center. PROCEDURE Retrospective study of 19 dogs treated with MP-TSCP. Dogs were evaluated at a median follow-up time of 30.5 months postoperatively. Reported outcomes were intraocular pressure (IOP), retention or loss of vision, number of medications, and additional procedures performed. Variables associated with time to treatment failure were evaluated. RESULTS Data from 19 dogs (24 eyes) was available. Median laser settings employed were 140 s and 2200 mW at 31.3% duty cycle. Long-term postoperative IOP was lower than preoperative IOP values (14 mmHg (IQR = 22 mmHg, range: 4-52 mmHg) versus 30 mmHg (IQR = 31 mmHg, range: 8-62 mmHg), respectively). Laser settings >2000 mW were associated with a significantly longer time to reported failure. MP-TSCP was the sole therapy performed in 16/24 eyes resulting in long-term IOP control in 13/24 eyes and retention of vision in 6 of the 14 sighted eyes. Repeat MP-TSCP was performed in 10/24 eyes. Eight of 24 eyes required additional procedures with long-term IOP control in 4/8 eyes. CONCLUSIONS MicroPulse transscleral diode cyclophotocoagulation can be an effective treatment for refractory glaucoma in select cases. Higher laser settings increased time to reported failure, whereas age, glaucoma type, and preoperative IOP did not affect survival. MP-TSCP as sole therapy or coupled with additional glaucoma procedures controlled the IOP in 70% of cases.

Abstract
Metaherpetic disease is recognized in humans affected by herpes simplex virus-1 but is not reported in cats affected by feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) despite the high prevalence of herpetic disease in this species and strong similarities in viral biology between alphaherpesviruses of humans and cats. This preliminary work evaluated cats naïve to FHV-1 (n = 9 cats, 18 eyes; control population) and cats naturally exposed to FHV-1 (n = 4 cats, 7 eyes), as confirmed by serologic testing and review of medical records. Antemortem assessment included clinical scoring, blink rate, corneal aesthesiometry, tear film breakup time (TFBUT), and Schirmer tear test-1 (STT-1) with or without the nasolacrimal reflex. Post-mortem assessment involved confocal microscopy of the corneas and evaluation of corneal nerves with ImageJ. Groups were compared with Student's t-tests and results are presented as mean ± standard deviation. Compared to control, herpetic cats had significantly higher (P ≤ 0.010) clinical scores (0.2 ± 0.4 vs. 4.6 ± 2.8) and response to nasolacrimal stimulation (7.8 ± 10.8% vs. 104.8 ± 151.1%), significantly lower (P < 0.001) corneal sensitivity (2.9 ± 0.6 cm vs. 1.4 ± 0.9 cm), STT-1 (20.8 ± 2.6 mm/min vs. 10.6 ± 6.0 mm/min), TFBUT (12.1 ± 2.0 s vs. 7.1 ± 2.9 s), and non-significantly lower blink rate (3.0 ± 1.5 blinks/min vs. 2.7 ± 0.5 blinks/min; P = 0.751). All parameters evaluated for corneal nerves (e.g., nerve fiber length, branching, occupancy) were notably but not significantly lower in herpetic vs. control cats (P ≥ 0.268). In sum, cats exposed to FHV-1 had signs suggestive of corneal hypoesthesia and quantitative/qualitative tear film deficiencies when compared to cats naïve to the virus. It is possible these are signs of metaherpetic disease as reported in other species.

Abstract
Glaucoma is a disorder of all species due to a rise of intraocular pressure (IOP) beyond which is compatible with ganglion cell and axon function, often resulting in optic nerve degeneration and irreversible blindness. Glaucoma treatment with surgical intervention aimed at either reducing aqueous production, or increasing or altering aqueous outflow has evolved over preceding decades, but there remains no cure. The present article is intended to provide a concise review of glaucoma surgical therapies in veterinary ophthalmology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Determine the immediate post-operative effects of MicroPulse™ transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (MP-TSCPC) in healthy equine eyes. ANIMALS STUDIED Ten adult horses. METHODS MP-TSCPC was performed on sedated horses in 12 eyes (4 groups) using the following parameters (power, duration, duty cycle): (1) 2000 mW, 180 seconds, 31.3%; (2) 3000 mW, 180 seconds, 31.3%; (3) 3000 mW, 270 seconds, 31.3%; and (4) 3000 mW, 270 seconds, 50%. Three additional eyes were left untreated (control). Eyes were monitored clinically until euthanasia (mean = 3 hours post-procedure). Histologic sections were assessed with light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). RESULTS MP-TSCPC was well tolerated by sedated horses. Adverse effects were only noted in Group 4: ocular hypertension (n = 3/3), conjunctival burns (3/3), aqueous flare (2/3), and a corneal erosion (1/3). Histologic scoring of Group 4 was statistically greater than other treated groups (1-3) and control eyes (P ≤ .021). TEM showed subtle changes to the mitochondria and plasma membrane infoldings of the basilar surface of the nonpigmented epithelium in all treated eyes. CONCLUSIONS MP-TSCPC does not cause immediate post-procedure adverse clinical effects or pronounced morphological changes to the ciliary body, except with the highest laser settings evaluated (power 3000 mW, duration 270 seconds, duty cycle 50%).

Abstract
Preclinical animal studies provide valuable opportunities to better understand human diseases and contribute to major advances in medicine. This review provides a comprehensive overview of ocular parameters in humans and selected animals, with a focus on the ocular surface, detailing species differences in ocular surface anatomy, physiology, tear film dynamics and tear film composition. We describe major pitfalls that tremendously limit the translational potential of traditional laboratory animals (i.e., rabbits, mice, and rats) in ophthalmic research, and highlight the benefits of integrating companion dogs with clinical analogues to human diseases into preclinical pharmacology studies. This One Health approach can help accelerate and improve the framework in which ophthalmic research is translated to the human clinic. Studies can be conducted in canine subjects with naturally occurring or noninvasively induced ocular surface disorders (e.g., dry eye disease, conjunctivitis), reviewed herein, and tear fluid can be easily retrieved from canine eyes for various bioanalytical purposes. In this review, we discuss common tear collection methods, including capillary tubes and Schirmer tear strips, and provide guidelines for tear sampling and extraction to improve the reliability of analyte quantification (drugs, proteins, others).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of acute conjunctivitis on tear film characteristics and corneal sensitivity in dogs. ANIMALS STUDIED Eight female spayed Beagle dogs (1.5-2 years old, 7.5-10 kg). PROCEDURES On two consecutive days, one randomly selected eye in each dog received 1 or 375 mg/mL histamine solution to induce mild or severe conjunctivitis, while the contralateral eye served as control. Diagnostic tests were performed in the following order: fluorescein instillation and repeated tear collection over 20 minutes (to determine tear volume [TV] and turnover rate [TTR] by fluorophotometry), Schirmer tear test-1 (STT-1), tear ferning, corneal esthesiometry, and tear film breakup time (TFBUT). RESULTS Results are presented as median values for severe conjunctivitis, mild conjunctivitis, and control eyes. Eyes with severe conjunctivitis had significantly higher STT-1 (24, 19.5, 17.5 mm/min; P = .002) and significantly lower TFBUT (10.5, 13.5, 15.5 s; P = .002), but no changes were noted in corneal tactile sensation (2, 2.5, 2.5 cm) or tear ferning (grades 2, 2, 2.5). Severe conjunctivitis significantly increased TV by nearly 10-fold (631, 97, 65 µL) initially (reflex tearing), although basal TV returned rapidly (<5 minutes) in all eyes (46, 58, 48 µL). Finally, there was a nonsignificant trend for higher reflex TTR in the conjunctivitis vs control eyes (68, 58, 43%/min). CONCLUSIONS Experimentally induced conjunctivitis increases tear quantity and decreases tear quality in dogs, but has no impact on corneal sensitivity. Changes in tear film dynamics could affect ocular pharmacology (eg, precorneal retention time), although homeostasis of lacrimal volume and drainage is rapidly restored.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize diagnostic findings, test-retest repeatability, and correlations among lacrimal tests in dogs of diverse cephalic conformations. ANIMAL STUDIED Fifty healthy dogs (25 brachycephalic, 25 nonbrachycephalic). PROCEDURES A series of diagnostics were performed in each dog, allowing for a 10-minute interval between tests and repeating each test 24 hours later under similar conditions: corneal tactile sensation (CTS), strip meniscometry test (SMT), phenol red thread test (PRTT), endodontic absorbent paper point tear test (EAPPTT), Schirmer tear test-1 without (STT-1) or with nasolacrimal stimulation (NL-STT1), and Schirmer tear test-2 (STT-2). RESULTS Mean ± SD test values were lower in brachycephalic vs. nonbrachycephalic dogs (except for SMT; 7.4 ± 2.0 mm/5 seconds vs 7.3 ± 2.4 mm/5 seconds), with statistically significant differences noted for CTS (1.8 ± 0.5 cm vs 3.4 ± 0.8 cm), PRTT (37.2 ± 4.0 mm/15 seconds vs 41.1 ± 5.5 mm/15 seconds), STT-1 (20.1 ± 3.4 mm/min vs 23.3 ± 5.7 mm/min), STT-2 (13.0 ± 3.4 mm/min vs 16.9 ± 3.9 mm/min), and NL-STT1 (23.2 ± 3.6 mm/min vs 27.1 ± 5.4 mm/min), and nonsignificant differences for EAPPTT (16.6 ± 2.7 mm/15 seconds vs 17.5 ± 2.9 mm/15 seconds). Nasolacrimal stimulation increased STT-1 values by 18% on average. Correlations among tests were generally weak to moderate (r < .70) except for a strong correlation between STT-1 and NL-STT1 (r = .83, P < .001). Test reliability was good although test-retest repeatability was generally poor to moderate, as depicted by low intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC ≤ 0.75) and wide 95% limits of agreement, except for CTS (ICC = 0.91). CONCLUSIONS Corneal sensitivity and aqueous tear secretion are lower in brachycephalic dogs. A comprehensive assessment of the ocular surface requires the combination of several diagnostic tests. The nasolacrimal reflex may provide a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool in dogs.

Abstract
The study aimed to determine the impact of drop size on tear film pharmacokinetics and assess important physiological parameters associated with ocular drug delivery in dogs. Two separate experiments were conducted in eight healthy Beagle dogs: (i) Instillation of one drop (35 μl) or two drops (70 μl) of 1% fluorescein solution in each eye followed by tear collections with capillary tubes from 0 to 180 min; (ii) Instillation of 10 to 100 μl of 0.1% fluorescein in each eye followed by external photography with blue excitation filter (to capture periocular spillage of fluorescein) and tear collections from 1 to 20 min (to capture tear turnover rate; TTR). Fluorescein concentrations were measured in tear samples with a fluorophotometer. The TTR was estimated based upon non-linear mixed-effects analysis of fluorescein decay curves. Tear film pharmacokinetics were not superior with instillation of two drops vs. one drop based on tear film concentrations, residual tear fluorescence, and area under the fluorescein-time curves (P ≥ 0.163). Reflex TTR varied from 20.2 to 30.5%/min and did not differ significantly (P = 0.935) among volumes instilled (10-100 μl). The volumetric capacity of the canine palpebral fissure (31.3 ± 8.9 μl) was positively correlated with the palpebral fissure length (P = 0.023). Excess solution was spilled over the periocular skin in a volume-dependent manner, predominantly in the lower eyelid, medial canthus and lateral canthus. In sum, a single drop is sufficient for topical administration in dogs. Any excess is lost predominantly by spillage over the periocular skin as well as accelerated nasolacrimal drainage.

Abstract
Impairment of corneal nerves can result in the development of ocular surface diseases such as aqueous tear deficiency and neurotrophic keratopathy. This study investigates oral nicergoline, an α-adrenoceptor antagonist shown to enhance endogenous secretion of nerve growth factor (NGF) by the lacrimal gland, as a potential therapy for these conditions. Five female spayed Beagle dogs received a 2-week course of oral nicergoline (10 mg twice daily). Drug safety was evaluated with ophthalmic and physical examinations, blood pressure monitoring, bloodwork, and urinalysis. The effect of nicergoline on the ocular surface was assessed with corneal esthesiometry, Schirmer tear test-1, and tear film breakup time. Drug effect on NGF levels was assessed by collecting tears and blood at baseline and completion of therapy using a bead-based immunoassay and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Although nicergoline was well tolerated in all dogs, it did not have a significant impact on corneal sensitivity, tear production, or tear stability. Of note, NGF was below the limit of quantification in all tear samples and was only detected in 8/20 serum samples with no significant difference between levels at baseline (189.4 ± 145.1 pg/mL) and completion of therapy (149.4 ± 79.4 pg/mL). Further validation of NGF analytical assays is warranted before nicergoline is investigated in clinical patients.
