ANGIOGRAPHIC ANATOMY OF THE MAJOR ABDOMINAL ARTERIAL BLOOD SUPPLY IN THE DOG

Veterinary Interventional Oncology

Interventional oncology (IO) is a rapidly growing field in veterinary medicine and has been accepted as a fourth pillar of treatment of neoplastic disease with other modalities including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. The major categories of IO therapies in companion animals are focused on the use of locoregional therapies and stenting of malignant obstructions. Although significant assessment of veterinary IO techniques is still necessary, early evaluation of these varying techniques is demonstrating promising results.

Description of the arterial supply and venous drainage of the abdominal viscera in the puma (Puma concolor) (Linnaeus, 1771)

Detailed descriptions of the abdominal vasculature have not been reported on Puma concolor; thus, herein we provided a thorough description. Our findings include the following: a celiac artery branching into the hepatic and gastrolienal arteries, and this latter further branched into the left gastric, the left gastroepiploic, the lienal and three more arteries that supplied the greater omentum. We also found a cystic artery that derived from the right gastroduodenal artery; a right gastric artery that derived from the right hepatic artery; and an antimesenteric ileal artery that derived from the lateral cecal artery. The right gastric vein did not form the gastroduodenal vein as in other species, but it drained directly into the portal vein. Also, a middle pancreaticoduodenal vein was identified as the last branch of the cranial mesenteric vein. Finally, the left caudal phrenic vein drained into the left renal vein. The abdominal blood supply described herein corresponds to a single individual; further reviews are desirable to corroborate our observations and to detect potential intraspecific anatomical variations.

Morphological investigation of canine epigastric organs and adjacent structures via computed tomography, ultrasound and anatomical prosection

The canine epigastric organs, their locations and visualization of these components are essential for veterinary practice and anatomical research. Despite their importance, conflicts and discrepancies in the published material, to date, still exist, even in a species that has been studied extensively. The aim of this research was to undertake computed tomography, and anatomical sections from differing views and levels in addition to the ultrasound appearance of the main organs of the epigastria region. The epigastric organs, and associated anatomical features and landmarks that affected by stomach fullness were described in relation to their relative positions, visual appearance and general anatomy for both empty and filled stomachs. These features were not only described, but also compared against the published literature.

Ultrasonography is insensitive but specific for detecting aortic wall abnormalities in dogs infected with Spirocerca lupi

BACKGROUND

Spirocercosis is caused by the nematode Spirocerca lupi (S lupi). The disease mainly affects dogs and is typically diagnosed by oesophagoscopy or faecal examination; however, these diagnostic tests may deliver false negative results during the migration phase of the nematode. The aim of the present prospective study was to evaluate whether ultrasonography could detect abnormalities in the abdominal aorta, celiac artery, and gastric wall structure as a diagnostic aid to detect S lupi infection in dogs.

METHODS

Oesophagoscopy and a focused abdominal ultrasound scan were performed in 40 dogs that presented to the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with gastrointestinal complaints. Ultrasonography scan findings of 20 dogs with oesophageal nodules, indicating S lupi infection (study group), were compared with those of 20 control dogs.

RESULTS

Vascular wall irregularity was significantly more common in the study group than in the control group (9/20 v 1/20, respectively; P=0.008).

CONCLUSION

Ultrasonographic evaluation of the abdominal aorta, celiac artery, and gastric wall structure is not a sensitive diagnostic marker for spirocercosis in dogs. However, the presence of vascular wall irregularity of the abdominal aorta or celiac artery might indicate S lupi migration.

Diagnostic imaging for the assessment of acquired abdominal vascular diseases in small animals: A pictorial review

Advances in interventional radiology and surgical techniques now allow complex abdominal diseases to be more successfully treated in small animals. Abdominal vascular alterations, acquired as individual process or as complication of other lesions such as neoplasia, can be life-threatening or at least greatly limit curative interventions of underlying diseases. Computed tomography (CT) and high-definition ultrasonography are now readily available in veterinary referral centers. Yet, there is little information currently available on the use of these modalities for the diagnosis and characterization of these vascular alterations. The purpose of this article is to review the CT and ultrasonographic findings of acquired vascular diseases in the abdomen of dogs and cats, using both the veterinary and human medicine literature as references, and highlighting essential concepts through figures.

Complete Urogenital and Anorectal Duplication in a Dog

A 10-week-old sexually intact female golden retriever was evaluated for two functional anal openings and a bipartite vulva. Examination revealed haired skin between two separate anatomically smaller anal openings. On rectal palpation, a soft tissue septum (5 cm) with a mucosal surface between the two anal openings was palpated. In addition, circumferential rectal musculature was not appreciated on the ventral aspect. Urogenital evaluation revealed duplication of the vestibule and vagina with a complete centrally located septum extending dorsoventrally. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis, vaginocystourethrogram, and colonogram were performed. Complete bifurcation of the urinary bladder with duplication of the urethra, cervix, and vaginal canal was noted. Approximately 2 cm from the rectum, there was a similar bifurcation that converged the colon into two rectal portions and separate anal openings. The owner was counseled on the severity of congenital malformations and a high likelihood of aging-related developmental complications in the future. The owner elected humane euthanasia and a necropsy was performed to confirm the malformations.
