Mechanical work as a (key) determinant of energy cost in human locomotion: recent findings and future directions

Effect of External Work Magnitude on Mechanical Efficiency of Sledge Jumping

The mechanical efficiency of human locomotion has been studied extensively. The mechanical efficiency of the whole body occasionally exceeds muscle efficiency during bouncing type gaits. It is thought to occur due to elasticity and stiffness of the tendinomuscular system and neuromuscular functions, especially stretch reflexes. In addition, the lower limb joint kinetics affect mechanical efficiency. We investigated the impact of varying external work on mechanical efficiency and lower limb kinetics during repeated sledge jumping. Fifteen male runners performed sledge jumping for 4 minutes at 3 different sledge inclinations. Lower limb kinematics, ground reaction forces, and expired gases were analyzed. Mechanical efficiency did not differ according to sledge inclination. Mechanical efficiency correlated positively with the positive mechanical work of the knee and hip joints and the negative contribution of the hip joints. Conversely, it correlated negatively with both the positive and negative contributions of the ankle joint. This may be attributable to the greater workload in this study versus previous studies. To achieve greater external work, producing more mechanical energy at the proximal joint and transferring it to the distal joint could be an effective strategy for improving mechanical efficiency because of the greater force-generating capability of distal joint muscles.

Postural adjustments and perceptual responses of Nordic running: concurrent effects of poles and irregular terrain

PURPOSE

In the natural environment, humans must continuously negotiate irregular and unpredictable terrain. Recently, the poles have been extensively used during trial running events. However, we know little about how humans adjust posture and bilateral coordination to use poles in irregular terrain. Here, we compared kinematics, bilateral coordination and perceptual responses between regular (compact dust) and irregular terrain (medium-length grass) during running at preferred speed with and without poles.

METHODS

In this transversal observational study, thirteen young healthy adults (8 men; mean ± SD; age 29.1 ± 8.0 years, body mass 76.8 ± 11.4 kg; height 1.75 ± 0.08 m) were evaluated during running at a self-selected comfortable speed with and without poles on regular and irregular terrains.

RESULTS

Our results show that, despite more flexed pattern on lower-limb joints at irregular terrain, the usage of poles was not enough to re-stabilize the bilateral coordination. Also, the perceived exertion was impaired adding poles to running, probably due to more complex movement pattern using poles in comparison to free running, and the invariance in the bilateral coordination.

CONCLUSION

Besides the invariability of usage poles on bilateral coordination and lower-limb kinematics, the runners seem to prioritize postural stability over lower limb stiffness when running in medium-length grass given the larger range of ankle and knee motion observed in irregular terrain. Further investigations at rougher/hilly terrains will likely provide additional insights into the neuromotor control strategies used to maintain the stability and on perceptual responses using poles during running.

Relation between soft tissue energy dissipation and leg stiffness in running at different step frequencies

This study aims to investigate the relationship between soft tissue energy dissipation and leg stiffness during running. Eight recreational healthy male runners (age: 22.2 ± 1.0 years; height: 1.84 ± 0.03 m; mass: 73.7 ± 5.7 kg) were asked to run at different speeds and step frequencies. Their soft tissue energy dissipation was estimated by the difference between the total mechanical work of the body, measured as the work done to move the body centre of mass relative to the surroundings plus the work to move the limbs relative to the body centre of mass, and lower-limb joint work. A mass-spring model with an actuator was used to analyse the force-length curve of the bouncing mechanism of running. In this way, the stiffness and damping coefficient were assessed at each speed and step frequency. Pearson's correlations were used to describe the relationship between the deviation from the spring-mass model and soft tissue energy fluctuations. The soft tissue dissipation was found to be significantly influenced by step frequency, with both positive and negative work phases decreasing when step frequency increases. Moreover, deviation from a spring-mass model was positively associated with the amount of soft tissue dissipation (r > 0.6). The findings emphasize the substantial role of soft tissues in dissipating or returning energy during running, behaving in a damped-elastic manner. Also, we introduce a novel approach for evaluating the elastic rebound of the body during running. The insights gained may have broad implications for assessing running mechanics, with potential applications in various contexts.

Shaping the energy curves of a servomotor-based hexapod robot

The advantageous versatility of hexapod robots is often accompanied by high power consumption, while animals have evolved an energy efficient locomotion. However, there are a lack of methods able to compare and apply animals' energetic optimizations to robots. In this study, we applied our method to a full servomotor-based hexapod robot to evaluate its energetic performance. Using an existing framework based on the laws of thermodynamics, we estimated four metrics using a dedicated test bench and a simulated robotic leg. We analyzed the characteristics of a single leg to shape the energetic profile of the full robot to a given task. Energy saving is improved by 10% through continuous duty factor adjustment with a 192% increase in power maximization. Moreover, adjusting the robot's velocity by the step length and associating this with gait switching, reduces the power loss by a further 10% at low-speed locomotion. However, unlike in animals, only one unique optimal operating point has been revealed, which is a disadvantage caused by the low energetic efficiency of servomotor-based hexapods. Thus, these legged robots are severely limited in their capacity to optimally adjust their locomotion to various tasks-a counter-intuitive conclusion for a supposedly versatile robot.

Metabolic cost and mechanical work of walking in a virtual reality emulator

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the metabolic cost (C), mechanical work, and kinematics of walking on a multidirectional treadmill designed for locomotion in virtual reality.

METHODS

Ten participants (5 females, body mass 67.2 ± 8.1 kg, height 1.71 ± 0.07 m, age 23.6 ± 1.9 years, mean ± SD) walked on a Virtuix Omni multidirectional treadmill at four imposed stride frequencies: 0.70, 0.85, 1.00, and 1.15 Hz. A portable metabolic system measured oxygen uptake, enabling calculation of C and the metabolic equivalent of task (MET). Gait kinematics and external, internal, and total mechanical work (WTOT) were calculated by an optoelectronic system. Efficiency was calculated either as WTOT/C or by summing WTOT to the work against sliding frictions. Results were compared with normal walking, running, and skipping.

RESULTS

C was higher for walking on the multidirectional treadmill than for normal walking, running, and skipping, and decreased with speed (best-fit equation: C = 20.2-27.5·speed + 15.8·speed2); the average MET was 4.6 ± 1.4. Mechanical work was higher at lower speeds, but similar to that of normal walking at higher speeds, with lower pendular energy recovery and efficiency; differences in efficiency were explained by the additional work against sliding frictions. At paired speeds, participants showed a more forward-leaned trunk and higher ankle dorsiflexion, stride frequency, and duty factor than normal walking.

CONCLUSION

Walking on a multidirectional treadmill requires a higher metabolic cost and different mechanical work and kinematics than normal walking. This raises questions on its use for gait rehabilitation but highlights its potential for high-intensity exercise and physical activity promotion.

Biomechanical, physiological and anthropometrical predictors of performance in recreational runners

Background

The maximal running speed (VMAX) determined on a graded treadmill test is well-recognized as a running performance predictor. However, few studies have assessed the variables that predict VMAX in recreationally active runners.

Methods

We used a mathematical procedure combining Fick's law and metabolic cost analysis to verify the relation between (1) VMAX versus anthropometric and physiological determinants of running performance and, (2) theoretical metabolic cost versus running biomechanical parameters. Linear multiple regression and bivariate correlation were applied. We aimed to verify the biomechanical, physiological, and anthropometrical determinants of VMAX in recreationally active runners. Fifteen recreationally active runners participated in this observational study. A Conconi and a stead-steady running test were applied using a heart rate monitor and a simple video camera to register the physiological and mechanical variables, respectively.

Results

Statistical analysis revealed that the speed at the second ventilatory threshold, theoretical metabolic cost, and fat-mass percentage confidently estimated the individual running performance as follows: VMAX = 58.632 + (-0.183 * fat percentage) + (-0.507 * heart rate percentage at second ventilatory threshold) + (7.959 * theoretical metabolic cost) (R2 = 0.62, p = 0.011, RMSE = 1.50 km.h-1). Likewise, the theoretical metabolic cost was significantly explained (R2 = 0.91, p = 0.004, RMSE = 0.013 a.u.) by the running spatiotemporal and elastic-related parameters (contact and aerial times, stride length and frequency, and vertical oscillation) as follows: theoretical metabolic cost = 10.421 + (4.282 * contact time) + (-3.795 * aerial time) + (-2.422 * stride length) + (-1.711 * stride frequency) + (0.107 * vertical oscillation).

Conclusion

Critical determinants of elastic mechanism, such as maximal vertical force and vertical and leg stiffness were unrelated to the metabolic economy. VMAX, a valuable marker of running performance, and its physiological and biomechanical determinants can be effectively evaluated using a heart rate monitor, treadmill, and a digital camera, which can be used in the design of training programs to recreationally active runners.

Kinetics and mechanical work done to move the body centre of mass along a curve

When running on a curve, the lower limbs interact with the ground to redirect the trajectory of the centre of mass of the body (CoM). The goal of this paper is to understand how the trajectory of the CoM and the work done to maintain its movements relative to the surroundings (Wcom) are modified as a function of running speed and radius of curvature. Eleven participants ran at different speeds on a straight line and on circular curves with a 6 m and 18 m curvature. The trajectory of the CoM and Wcom were calculated using force-platforms measuring the ground reaction forces and infrared cameras recording the movements of the pelvis. To follow a circular path, runners overcompensate the rotation of their trajectory during contact phases. The deviation from the circular path increases when the radius of curvature decreases and speed increases. Interestingly, an asymmetry between the inner and outer lower limbs emerges as speed increases. The method to evaluate Wcom on a straight-line was adapted using a referential that rotates at heel strike and remains fixed during the whole step cycle. In an 18 m radius curve and at low speeds on a 6 m radius, Wcom changes little compared to a straight-line run. Whereas at 6 m s-1 on a 6 m radius, Wcom increases by ~25%, due to an augmentation in the work to move the CoM laterally. Understanding these adaptations provides valuable insight for sports sciences, aiding in optimizing training and performance in sports with multidirectional movements.

Mechanical and Metabolic Power in Accelerated Running-PART I: the 100-m dash

PURPOSE

Acceleration phases require additional mechanical and metabolic power, over and above that for running at constant velocity. The present study is devoted to a paradigmatic example: the 100-m dash, in which case the forward acceleration is very high initially and decreases progressively to become negligible during the central and final phases.

METHODS

The mechanical ([Formula: see text]) and metabolic ([Formula: see text]) power were analysed for both Bolt's extant world record and for medium level sprinters.

RESULTS

In the case of Bolt, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] attain peaks of ≈ 35 and ≈ 140 W kg-1 after ≈ 1 s, when the velocity is ≈ 5.5 m s-1; they decrease substantially thereafter, to attain constant values equal to those required for running at constant speed (≈ 18 and ≈ 65 W kg-1) after ≈ 6 s, when the velocity has reached its maximum (≈ 12 m s-1) and the acceleration is nil. At variance with [Formula: see text], the power required to move the limbs in respect to the centre of mass (internal power, [Formula: see text]) increases gradually to reach, after ≈ 6 s a constant value of ≈ 33 W kg-1. As a consequence, [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) increases throughout the run to a constant value of ≈ 50 W kg-1. In the case of the medium level sprinters, the general patterns of speed, mechanical and metabolic power, neglecting the corresponding absolute values, follow an essentially equal trend.

CONCLUSION

Hence, whereas in the last part of the run the velocity is about twice that observed after ≈ 1 s, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are reduced to 45-50% of the peak values.

Quantifying physiological and biomechanical responses of shallow water walking: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Detecting the physiological and biomechanical alterations in shallow water walking (SWW) due to water depth and speed is important for health professionals to perform accurate exercise prescription. This systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to investigate the acute physiological and biomechanical responses of SWW at different immersion depths in comparison to dry land walking. The main result (initial search: 1960 studies; systematic review: 42 studies; meta-analysis: 22 studies) indicated that metabolic power was higher in the immersion depth levels of xiphoid process (standardized mean differences (SMD) = 0.90; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.26 to 1.54) and waist (SMD = 3.35; 95% CI: -0.18 to 6.87) in comparison to dry land. SWW at xiphoid and waist depths seems to be an adequate exercise if the objective is to increase the energy expenditure and cardiovascular demand while the lower limb impact forces are reduced in comparison to dry land walking. Biomechanical adaptations during exhaustive runs at 90 to 120% of peak aerobic speed

The aim of this study was to examine how running biomechanics (spatiotemporal and kinetic variables) adapt with exhaustion during treadmill runs at 90, 100, 110, and 120% of the peak aerobic speed (PS) of a maximal incremental aerobic test. Thirteen male runners performed a maximal incremental aerobic test on an instrumented treadmill to determine their PS. Biomechanical variables were evaluated at the start, mid, and end of each run until volitional exhaustion. The change of running biomechanics with fatigue was similar among the four tested speeds. Duty factor and contact and propulsion times increased with exhaustion (P ≤ 0.004; F ≥ 10.32) while flight time decreased (P = 0.02; F = 6.67) and stride frequency stayed unchanged (P = 0.97; F = 0.00). A decrease in vertical and propulsive peak forces were obtained with exhaustion (P ≤ 0.002; F ≥ 11.52). There was no change in the impact peak with exhaustion (P = 0.41; F = 1.05). For runners showing impact peaks, the number of impact peaks increased (P ≤ 0.04; [Formula: see text] ≥ 6.40) together with the vertical loading rate (P = 0.005; F = 9.61). No changes in total, external, and internal positive mechanical work was reported with exhaustion (P ≥ 0.12; F ≤ 2.32). Results suggest a tendency towards a "smoother" vertical and horizontal running pattern with exhaustion. A smoother running pattern refers to the development of protective adjustments, leading to a reduction of the load applied to the musculoskeletal system at each running step. This transition seemed continuous between the start and end of the running trials and could be adopted by the runners to decrease the muscle force level during the propulsion phase. Despite these changes with exhaustion, there were no changes in either gesture speed (no alteration of stride frequency) or positive mechanical work, advocating that runners unconsciously organize themselves to maintain a constant whole-body mechanical work output.

Energy cost differences between marathon runners and soccer players: Constant versus shuttle running

Purpose: In the last decades, the energy cost assessment provided new insight on shuttle or constant running as training modalities. No study, though, quantified the benefit of constant/shuttle running in soccer-players and runners. Therefore, the aim of this study was to clarify if marathon runners and soccer players present specific energy cost values related to their training experience performing constant and shuttle running. Methods: To this aim, eight runners (age 34 ± 7.30y; training experience 5.70 ± 0.84y) and eight soccer-players (age 18.38 ± 0.52y; training experience 5.75 ± 1.84y) were assessed randomly for 6' on shuttle-running or constant-running with 3 days of recovery in-between. For each condition, the blood lactate (BL) and the energy cost of constant (C_r) and shuttle running (C_Sh) was determined. To assess differences for metabolic demand in terms of C_r, C_Sh and BL over the two running conditions on the two groups a MANOVA was used. Results: V·O_2max were 67.9 ± 4.5 and 56.8 ± 4.3 ml·min^-1 kg^-1 (p = 0.0002) for marathon runners and soccer players, respectively. On constant running, the runners had a lower C_r compared to soccer players (3.86 ± 0.16 J kg^-1m^-1 vs. 4.19 ± 0.26 J kg^-1 m^-1; F = 9.759, respectively; p = 0.007). On shuttle running, runners had a higher C_Sh compared to soccer players (8.66 ± 0.60 J kg^-1 m^-1 vs. 7.86 ± 0.51 J kg^-1 m^-1; F = 8.282, respectively; with p = 0.012). BL on constant running was lower in runners compared to soccer players (1.06 ± 0.07 mmol L^-1 vs. 1.56 ± 0.42 mmol L^-1, respectively; with p = 0.005). Conversely, BL on shuttle running was higher in runners compared to soccer players 7.99 ± 1.49 mmol L^-1 vs. 6.04 ± 1.69 mmol L^-1, respectively; with p = 0.028). Conclusion: The energy cost optimization on constant or shuttle running is strictly related to the sport practiced.

Mechanical energy on anaerobic capacity during a supramaximal treadmill running in men: Is there influence between runners and active individuals?

This study verified whether mechanical variables influence the anaerobic capacity outcome on treadmill running and whether these likely influences were dependent of running experience. Seventeen physical active and 18 amateur runners, males, performed a graded exercise test and constant load exhaustive running efforts at 115% of intensity associated to maximal oxygen consumption. During the constant load were determined the metabolic responses (i.e., gas exchange and blood lactate) to estimate the energetic contribution and anaerobic capacity as well as kinematic responses. The runners showed higher anaerobic capacity (16.6%; p = 0.005), but lesser time to exercise failure (-18.8%; p = 0.03) than active subjects. In addition, the stride length (21.4%; p = 0.00001), contact phase duration (-11.3%; p = 0.005), and vertical work (-29.9%; p = 0.015). For actives, the anaerobic capacity did not correlate significantly with any physiologic, kinematic, and mechanical variables and no regression model was fitted using the stepwise multiple regression, while to runners the anaerobic capacity was significantly correlated with phosphagen energetic contribution (r = 0.47; p = 0.047), external power (r = -0.51; p = 0.031), total work (r = -0.54; p = 0.020), external work (r = -0.62; p = 0.006), vertical work (r = -0.63; p = 0.008), and horizontal work (r = -0.61; p = 0.008), and the vertical work and phosphagen energetic contribution presented a coefficient of determination of 62% (p = 0.001). Based on findings, it is possible to assume that for active subjects, the mechanical variables have no influence over the anaerobic capacity, however, for experienced runners, the vertical work and phosphagen energetic contribution have relevant effect over anaerobic capacity output.

Ultrasonographic findings in long COVID: A cross-sectional study of 312 patients

Background

Fatigue and muscle weakness are common complaints in COVID-19 survivors. However, little is still known about the skeletal muscle qualitative and quantitative characteristics after hospitalization due to moderate and severe COVID-19.

Objectives

To assess rectus femoris and vastus intermedius muscle thickness (MT) and rectus femoris echo intensity (EI) and to establish its association with demographic, clinical, functional, and inflammatory parameters in long COVID patients after hospital discharge.

Methods

Cross-sectional study with 312 COVID-19 patients (53.53% male; age: 54.59 ± 13.50 years), with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. Patients were assessed 3-11 months after hospital discharge. We evaluated MT of the right rectus femoris and vastus intermedius and EI of the right rectus femoris using a portable ultrasound system, 6-13 MHz, broadband linear transducer. We corrected EI using the subcutaneous fat thickness. Ultrasonographic parameters were tested in association with demographic (sex and age); functional (Handgrip strength measurement, Timed Up and Go, 1 min Sit-to-Stand test, EuroQoL-5 Dimensions-5 Levels, World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0), Post-COVID-19 Functional Status, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT), Medical Research Council (MRC) sum score, Borg Dyspnea Scale, MRC Dyspnea score, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Functional Independence Measurement (FIM), and Functional Oral Intake Scale); clinical (length of hospital stay, intubation, and presence of comorbidities such as systemic hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma), and inflammatory data assessed by the C-reactive protein and D-dimer serum concentrations.

Results

Rectus femoris MT was associated with age, handgrip strength, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and subcutaneous fat thickness (r² = 27.51%; p < 0.0001). Vastus intermedius MT was associated with age, pain intensity, handgrip strength, Epworth Sleepiness scale, FIM, and time since hospital discharge (r² = 21.12%; p < 0.0001). Rectus femoris EI was significantly associated with the male sex, TUG, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and C-Reactive Protein levels (r² = 44.39%; p < 0.0001). Mean MT of rectus femoris and vastus intermedius are significantly different (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

After hospital discharge, long COVID patients present qualitative and quantitative skeletal muscle characteristics associated with a combination of demographic, clinical, and functional parameters.

Isolating the speed factor is crucial in gait analysis for Parkinson's disease

Introduction

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by an alteration of the walking gait, frequently including a slower self-selected walking speed (SSWS). Although the reduction of walking speed is inherent to people with PD, such speed reduction also represents a potential confounding factor that might partly explain the observed gait differences between PD and control participants.

Methods

In this study, each participant walked along a 25 m level corridor during which vertical ground reaction force signals were recorded using shoes equipped with eight pressure sensors. Vertical ground reaction force signals (using statistical parametric mapping) and temporal and kinetic variables as well as their related variability and asymmetry (using Student's t-test) were compared between PD (n = 54) and walking-speed-matched control subjects (n = 39).

Results

Statistical parametric mapping did not yield significant differences between PD and control groups for the vertical ground reaction force signal along the walking stance phase. Stride time and single support time (equivalent to swing time) were shorter and peak vertical ground reaction force was larger in PD patients compared to controls (p ≤ 0.05). However, the single support time was no longer different between people with PD and healthy subjects when expressed relatively to stride time (p = 0.07). While single support, double support, and stance times were significantly more variable and asymmetric for PD than for the control group (p ≤ 0.05), stride time was similar (p ≥ 0.07).

Discussion

These results indicate that at matched SSWS, PD patients adopt a higher cadence than control participants. Moreover, the temporal subdivision of the walking gait of people with PD is similar to healthy individuals but the coordination during the double support phase is different. Hence, this study indicates that isolating the speed factor is crucial in gait analysis for PD.

The interplay between gastrocnemius medialis force-length and force-velocity potentials, cumulative EMG activity and energy cost at speeds above and below the walk to run transition speed

NEW FINDINGS

What is the central question of the study? Are the changes in force potentials (at the muscle level) related with metabolic changes at speeds above and below the walk-to-run transition? What is the main finding and its importance? The force-length and force-velocity potentials of gastrocnemius medialis during human walking decrease as a function of speed; this decrease is associated with an increase in cumulative EMG activity and in the energy cost of locomotion. Switching from fast walking to running is associated to an increase in the force potentials, supporting the idea that the 'metabolic trigger' that determines the transition from walking to running is ultimately driven by a reduction of the muscle's contractile capacity.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the interplay between the force-length (F-L) and force-velocity (F-V) potentials of gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle fascicles, the cumulative muscle activity per distance travelled (CMAPD) of the lower limb muscles (GM, vastus lateralis, biceps femori, tibialis anterior) and net energy cost (Cnet ) during walking and running at speeds above and below the walk-to-run transition speed (walking: 2-8 km h-1 ; running: 6-10 km h-1 ). A strong association was observed between Cnet and CMAPD: both changed significantly with walking speed but were unaffected by speed in running. The F-L and F-V potentials decreased with speed in both gaits and, at 6-8 km h-1 , were significantly larger in running. At low to moderate walking speeds (2-6 km h-1 ), the changes in GM force potentials were not associated with substantial changes in CMAPD (and Cnet ), whereas at walking speeds of 7-8 km h-1 , even small changes in force potentials were associated with steep increases in CMAPD (and Cnet ). These data suggest that: (i) the walk to run transition could be explained by an abrupt increase in Cnet driven by an upregulation of the EMG activity (e.g., in CMAPD) at sustained walking speeds (>7 km h-1 ) and (ii) the reduction in the muscle's ability to produce force (e.g., in the F-L and F-V potentials) contributes to the increase in CMAPD (and Cnet ). Switching to running allows regaining of high force potentials, thus limiting the increase in CMAPD (and Cnet ) that would otherwise occur to sustain the increase in locomotion speed.

Effects of flywheel resistance training on the running economy of young male well-trained distance runners

The study aimed to investigate the effect of flywheel accentuated eccentric loading (AEL) training on the running economy (RE) of young male well-trained distance runners. Twenty-two runners participated and were randomly assigned to the flywheel (FG, n = 12) and the control group (CG, n = 10). Traditional endurance training was performed in both groups three times a week for 6-week, while traditional resistance and flywheel AEL training was added to the CG and FG respectively. Subjects performed the incremental exercise test, squat jump, and countermovement jump (CMJ) before and after training. The results showed that 1) the RE at 65% of peak oxygen consumption (VO₂peak), 75% VO₂peak, and 85% VO₂peak improved significantly after 6 weeks of training (p < 0.01, Effect size (ES) = 0.76; p < 0.01, ES = 1.04; p < 0.01, ES = 1.85) in FG, and the RE of 85% VO₂peak in FG was significantly lower than CG (p < 0.05, ES = 0.30); 2) in post-training, both squat jump (p < 0.01, ES = 0.73) and CMJ (p < 0.01, ES = 1.15) performance, eccentric utilization ratio (p < 0.04, ES = 0.44), the rate of force development (RFD) of squat jump (p < 0.05, ES = 0.46), and CMJ_RFD (p < 0.01, ES = 0.66) were significantly improved in FG. And there are no significant differents in CG group because it was maintain training for our participants. Our findings showed that 1) flywheel AEL training improves the muscles' explosive strength and other neuromuscular functions, and improves the athlete's running economy under 65%, 75%, and 85% VO₂peak, which potentially increases endurance performance. 2) Flywheel AEL training can improve the height, RFD, and the eccentric utilization ratio of squat jump and CMJ, and other lower limb elastic potential energy indicators of the young male, well-trained distance runners.

Sex-specific differences in biomechanics among runners: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Patellofemoral disorders are more common in female runners compared to their male counterparts. Differences in biomechanical characteristics between groups of runners could provide insight into the causes of higher rates of injury in female versus male runners, which would be useful to physical therapists and athletic trainers in development of individualized injury prevention programs. This review compares the differences in biomechanical characteristics between female and male runners. Electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase were searched in December 2021 for studies evaluating sex-specific differences in lower limb mechanics of healthy participants during running. Two independent reviewers determined the inclusion and quality of each research paper. Meta-analyses were used where possible. A total of 13 studies were selected. Means and standard deviations of reported data were retrieved from each selected paper for comparison of results. Three biomechanical variables, including dynamics, muscle activation, and kinematics, were compared between female and male runners. However, no differences were found in kinetic variables or muscle activation between groups due to insufficient data available from the selected studies. Meta-analyses of kinematic variables revealed that female runners exhibited significantly greater hip flexion angle, hip adduction angle, and hip internal rotation angle, but smaller knee flexion angle compared to male runners during running. We found significant differences in kinematic variables between female and male runners, which could influence the training advice of physical therapists and athletic trainers who work with runners, and inform the development of injury prevention programs.

Modelling 5-km Running Performance on Level and Hilly Terrains in Recreational Runners

Incline and level running on treadmills have been extensively studied due to their different cardiorespiratory and biomechanical acute responses. However, there are no studies examining the performance determinants of outdoor running on hilly terrains. We aimed to investigate the influence of anthropometrics, muscle strength, and cardiorespiratory and gait spatiotemporal parameters during level (0%) and inclined (+7%) running on performance in level and hilly 5-km races. Twenty male recreational runners completed two 5-km outdoor running tests (0% vs. +7% and −7%), and two submaximal (10 km·h−1) and incremental treadmill tests at 0 and 7% slopes, after complete laboratory evaluations. The velocity at maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) evaluated at 7% incline and level treadmill running were the best performance predictors under both hilly (R2 = 0.72; p < 0.05) and level (R2 = 0.85; p < 0.01) conditions, respectively. Inclusion of ventilatory and submaximal heart rate data improved the predictive models up to 100%. Conversely, none of the parameters evaluated in one condition contributed to the other condition. The spatiotemporal parameters and the runners’ strength levels were not associated to outdoor performances. These results indicate that the vVO2max evaluated at similar slopes in the lab can be used to predict 5-km running performances on both level and hilly terrains.

The effects of learning with various noise on Gait Kinematics in 3-to-5-year-old children: a randomized controlled trial

Background

Lack of the neuromuscular control during locomotion in the knee joint leads to an increased risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in children. Hence, we aimed to explore the effects of a repetitive, model-oriented, and self-organized approach on lower limb kinematics during gait in children.

Methods

In randomized controlled trial, 36 children with 4 ± 0.79 years of age from the children gym were randomly (a lottery method) allocated into three groups, including (1) the model-oriented (n = 10), (2) Differential Learning (n = 11), and (3) control (n = 10) groups. Kinematic data of hip, knee, and ankle joints in the sagittal plane were recorded by a GoPro camera at the moments of heel-ground contact and toe-off the ground before and after a 6-week intervention (two sessions per week).

Results

The results indicate a 35% post-intervention increase of ankle dorsiflexion (95% CI: − 5.63 _ − 0.96) in the moment of heel-ground contact in the model-oriented group; however, knee flexion (95% CI: − 1.05 _ 8.34) and hip flexion (95% CI: 3.01 _ 11.78) were respectively decreased by 20% and 20%. After the intervention, moreover, ankle plantar flexion (95% CI: − 9.18 _ − 2.81) and hip extension (95% CI: − 12.87 _ − 3.72) have respectively increased by 37% and 37%, while knee flexion (95% CI: 3.49 _ 11.30) showed a %16 decrease in the moment of toe off the ground. As for the Differential Learning group, ankle dorsiflexion (95% CI: − 5.19 _ − 1.52) increased by 33%, and knee (95% CI: 0.60 _ 5.76) and hip flexion (95% CI: 2.15 _ 7.85) respectively decreased by 17% and 17% at the moment of the heel-ground contact following the intervention. At toe lifting off the ground, the plantar flexion (95% CI: − 7.77 _ − 2.77) increased by 35%, knee flexion (95% CI: 2.17 _ 7.27) decreased to 14%, and hip extension (95% CI: − 9.98 _ − 4.20) increased by %35 following the intervention for the Differential Learning group subjects. Based on the results obtained from the one-way ANOVA, there was a significant difference between these groups and the control group in all kinematic gait variables (p ≤ 0.05). However, no statistically significant differences were found between the two experimental groups.

Conclusions

The results implied that the model-oriented repetitive and the self-organized Differential Learning approach were both appropriate to alter the kinematic gait pattern in the 3–5-year-old children. Previous research has almost exclusively recommended a model-oriented approach to change kinematic patterns and preventing non-contact motor injuries. However, the present study showed that the Differential Learning approach can help children to achieve the same goal by continuously changing environments and stimulating challenges.

Artificial Neural Network Detects Hip Muscle Forces as Determinant for Harmonic Walking in People after Stroke

Many recent studies have highlighted that the harmony of physiological walking is based on a specific proportion between the durations of the phases of the gait cycle. When this proportion is close to the so-called golden ratio (about 1.618), the gait cycle assumes an autosimilar fractal structure. In stroke patients this harmony is altered, but it is unclear which factor is associated with the ratios between gait phases because these relationships are probably not linear. We used an artificial neural network to determine the weights associable to each factor for determining the ratio between gait phases and hence the harmony of walking. As expected, the gait ratio obtained as the ratio between stride duration and stance duration was found to be associated with walking speed and stride length, but also with hip muscle forces. These muscles could be important for exploiting the recovery of energy typical of the pendular mechanism of walking. Our study also highlighted that the results of an artificial neural network should be associated with a reliability analysis, being a non-deterministic approach. A good level of reliability was found for the findings of our study.

Lower Limb Kinematic Coordination during the Running Motion of Stroke Patient: A Single Case Study

The purpose of this study was to clarify the lower limb joint motor coordination of para-athletes during running motion from frequency characteristics and to propose this as a method for evaluating their performance. The subject used was a 43-year-old male para-athlete who had suffered a left cerebral infarction. Using a three-dimensional motion analysis system, the angles of the hip, knee, and ankle joints were measured during 1 min of running at a speed of 8 km/h on a treadmill. Nine inter- and intra-limb joint angle pairs were analyzed by coherence and phase analyses. The main characteristic of the stroke patient was that there were joint pairs with absent or increased coherence peaks in the high-frequency band above 4 Hz that were not found in healthy subjects. Interestingly, these features were also observed on the non-paralyzed side. Furthermore, a phase analysis showed different phase differences between the joint motions of the stroke patient and healthy subjects in some joint pairs. Thus, we concluded there was a widespread functional impairment of joint motion in the stroke patient that has not been revealed by conventional methods. The coherence analysis of joint motion may be useful for identifying joint motion problems in para-athletes.

Triceps Surae Muscle-Tendon Properties as Determinants of the Metabolic Cost in Trained Long-Distance Runners

Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether triceps surae's muscle architecture and Achilles tendon parameters are related to running metabolic cost (C) in trained long-distance runners. Methods: Seventeen trained male recreational long-distance runners (mean age = 34 years) participated in this study. C was measured during submaximal steady-state running (5 min) at 12 and 16 km h-1 on a treadmill. Ultrasound was used to determine the gastrocnemius medialis (GM), gastrocnemius lateralis (GL), and soleus (SO) muscle architecture, including fascicle length (FL) and pennation angle (PA), and the Achilles tendon cross-sectional area (CSA), resting length and elongation as a function of plantar flexion torque during maximal voluntary plantar flexion. Achilles tendon mechanical (force, elongation, and stiffness) and material (stress, strain, and Young's modulus) properties were determined. Stepwise multiple linear regressions were used to determine the relationship between independent variables (tendon resting length, CSA, force, elongation, stiffness, stress, strain, Young's modulus, and FL and PA of triceps surae muscles) and C (J kg-1m-1) at 12 and 16 km h-1. Results: SO PA and Achilles tendon CSA were negatively associated with C (r 2 = 0.69; p < 0.001) at 12 km h-1, whereas SO PA was negatively and Achilles tendon stress was positively associated with C (r 2 = 0.63; p = 0.001) at 16 km h-1, respectively. Our results presented a small power, and the multiple linear regression's cause-effect relation was limited due to the low sample size. Conclusion: For a given muscle length, greater SO PA, probably related to short muscle fibers and to a large physiological cross-sectional area, may be beneficial to C. Larger Achilles tendon CSA may determine a better force distribution per tendon area, thereby reducing tendon stress and C at submaximal speeds (12 and 16 km h-1). Furthermore, Achilles tendon morphological and mechanical properties (CSA, stress, and Young's modulus) and triceps surae muscle architecture (GM PA, GM FL, SO PA, and SO FL) presented large correlations with C.

Biomechanical responses of Nordic walking in people with Parkinson's disease

In healthy adults, Nordic walking (NW) is known to increase the external mechanical energy fluctuations, though the external work is unaltered due to an improved pendulum-like recovery in comparison with free walking (FW). We aimed to compare mechanical, pendulum-like, and spatiotemporal parameters of gait at different speeds with and without NW poles in people with Parkinson's disease and healthy controls. The study included 11 people (aged 65.6 ± 7.0 years) with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, scoring between 1 and 1.5 on the Hoehn and Yahr scale (H&Y), and nine healthy controls (aged 70.0 ± 5.6 years). All the people were experienced Nordic walkers. Walking tests were performed at 1.8 km h^-1 and 4.7 km h^-1 , on eight 3D force platforms on a walkway. We found greater pendulum-like energy recovery (p < 0.05) in the Parkinson group during NW than in FW, while external mechanical work remained similar (p > 0.05). People with Parkinson's disease showed a major increase in vertical and forward energy fluctuations using poles than in healthy controls. In addition, the Parkinson group showed increased stride frequency and reduced stride length compared to controls in the NW and FW conditions. Our findings partly justify the lower walking economy in Parkinson's disease due to reduced pendulum-like mechanism at commonly used speeds. NW alters gait mechanics similarly in Parkinson group and healthy control, increasing the total mechanical work. Therefore, NW can be a compelling strategy for rehabilitation because of its potential for improving functional mobility, increasing pendulum-like mechanism in Parkinson's disease.

Spatiotemporal inflection points in human running: Effects of training level and athletic modality

The effect of the different training regimes and histories on the spatiotemporal characteristics of human running was evaluated in four groups of subjects who had different histories of engagement in running-specific training; sprinters, distance runners, active athletes, and sedentary individuals. Subjects ran at a variety of velocities, ranging from slowest to fastest, over 30 trials in a random order. Group averages of maximal running velocities, ranked from fastest to slowest, were: sprinters, distance runners, active athletes, and sedentary individuals. The velocity-cadence-step length (V-C-S) relationship, made by plotting step length against cadence at each velocity tested, was analyzed with the segmented regression method, utilizing two regression lines. In all subject groups, there was a critical velocity, defined as the inflection point, in the relationship. In the velocity ranges below and above the inflection point (slower and faster velocity ranges), velocity was modulated primarily by altering step length and by altering cadence, respectively. This pattern was commonly observed in all four groups, not only in sprinters and distance runners, as has already been reported, but also in active athletes and sedentary individuals. This pattern may reflect an energy saving strategy. When the data from all groups were combined, there were significant correlations between maximal running velocity and both running velocity and step length at the inflection point. In spite of the wide variety of athletic experience of the subjects, as well as their maximum running velocities, the inflection point appeared at a similar cadence (3.0 ± 0.2 steps/s) and at a similar relative velocity (65–70%Vmax). These results imply that the influence of running-specific training on the inflection point is minimal.

Causal relationship between spatiotemporal parameters of walking and the locomotor rehabilitation index in healthy people

BACKGROUND

Walking speed is a functional vital sign affecting mechanical parameters individually. Further, there is a tendency for pathological gait to occur at slower speeds, which does not always allow for an adequate comparison with normal gait. Therefore, recognizing the influence of spatiotemporal adjustments on healthy gait can broaden our understanding of the applicability of gait quality markers.

RESEARCH QUESTION

This study aimed to identify the causal relationship between the stride length-frequency walking ratio index (R_SL/SF) at the self-selected walking speed (SSWS) and optimal walking speed (OWS) and the locomotor rehabilitation index (LRI) in healthy adults.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Healthy adults (n = 68) of both sexes aged 20-59 years were included in this study. The SSWS was determined using a 30-m walkway. The OWS and LRI were predicted by equations proposed in the literature. The volunteers walked on the treadmill at speeds corresponding to the OWS and SSWS in two bouts of 60 s each, with a break in between. The spatiotemporal parameters were recorded using a high-speed digital video camera, digitalized, and mathematically processed. Multiple linear regression was applied using the forced regression method.

RESULTS

Significant correlations were found between the LRI and R_SL/SF at the SSWS (R = 0.397; p < 0.001) and OWS (R = 0.266; p = 0.014). The regression model showed that 16 % of the variability in the LRI was attributable to the R_SL/SF variability at the SSWS. The average and 95 % confidence interval LRI were 94.7 % (91.6 %-97.8 %).

CONCLUSION

The LRI average is around 95 % for healthy and young adults and the R_SL/SF explained just 16 % of the variance in LRI.
