Abstract
Reaching movements can be redirected during their progress to handle unexpected visual changes, such as a change in target location. It is important to know when these redirections start, i.e., the online reaction time (oRT), but this information is not readily evident since redirections are embedded within a time-varying baseline movement that differs from trial to trial. The one previous study that evaluated the performance of different oRT identification methods utilized simulated redirections with the exact same onset, rather than a range of onsets as would be typically encountered. We addressed this gap by utilizing batches of "hybrid" trials with temporal spread in their oRTs. Each hybrid trial combined a sampled baseline movement with an idealized corrective response. Two new methods had the most accurate identification of online reaction times: 1) a threshold-aligned grand mean regression, and 2) a template-based approach we term the canonical correction search. The threshold-aligned grand mean regression is simple to implement and effective. The canonical correction search is a more complex procedure but arguably better linked to the underlying response. Applying the two methods to a published dataset revealed more delayed oRTs than was previously reported along with new information such as the width of oRT distributions. Taken together, our results demonstrate the utility of two new methods for dissecting corrective action from ongoing movement.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Advancing our understanding of visual feedback control requires methods that accurately identify the onset of corrective action. We developed a modified regression approach and a template-based approach to identify the online reaction time of single-reaching movements. Both outperform previous methods when challenged by temporal jitter in the response onset and increased background noise.

Abstract
Muscle synergies as functional low-dimensional building blocks of the neuromotor system regulate the activation patterns of muscle groups in a modular structure during locomotion. The purpose of the current study was to explore how older adults organize locomotor muscle synergies to counteract unpredictable and predictable gait perturbations during the perturbed steps and the recovery steps. Sixty-three healthy older adults (71.2±5.2 years) participated in the study. Mediolateral and anteroposterior unpredictable and predictable perturbations during walking were introduced using a treadmill. Muscle synergies were extracted from the electromyographic activity of 13 lower limb muscles using Gaussian non-negative matrix factorization. The four basic synergies responsible for unperturbed walking (weight acceptance, propulsion, early swing and late swing) were preserved in all applied gait perturbations, yet their temporal recruitment and muscle contribution in each synergy were modified (P<0.05). These modifications were observed for up to four recovery steps and were more pronounced (P<0.05) following unpredictable perturbations. The recruitment of the four basic walking synergies in the perturbed and recovery gait cycles indicates a robust neuromotor control of locomotion by using activation patterns of a few and well-known muscle synergies with specific adjustments within the synergies. The selection of pre-existing muscle synergies while adjusting the time of their recruitment during challenging locomotor conditions may improve the effectiveness to deal with perturbations and promote the transfer of adaptation between different kinds of perturbations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knee osteoarthritis causes structural joint damage. The resultant symptoms can impair the ability to recover from unexpected gait perturbations. This study compared balance recovery responses to moderate gait perturbations between individuals with knee osteoarthritis and healthy individuals. METHODS Kinematic data of 35 individuals with end-stage knee osteoarthritis, and 32 healthy individuals in the same age range were obtained during perturbed walking on a treadmill at 1.0 m/s. Participants received anteroposterior (acceleration or deceleration) or mediolateral perturbations during the stance phase. Changes from baseline in margin of stability, step length, step time, and step width during the first two steps after perturbation were compared between groups using a linear regression model. Extrapolated center of mass excursion was descriptively analyzed. FINDINGS After all perturbation modes, extrapolated center of mass trajectories overlapped between individuals with knee osteoarthritis and healthy individuals. Participants predominantly responded to mediolateral perturbations by adjusting their step width, and to anteroposterior perturbations by adjusting step length and step time. None of the perturbation modes yielded between-group differences in changes in margin of stability and step width during the first two steps after perturbation. Small between-group differences were observed for step length (i.e. 2 cm) of the second step after mediolateral and anteroposterior perturbations, and for step time (i.e. 0.01-0.02 s) of first step after mediolateral perturbations and the second step after outward and belt acceleration perturbations. INTERPRETATION Despite considerable pain and damage to the knee joint, individuals with knee osteoarthritis showed comparable balance recovery responses after moderate gait perturbations to healthy participants.

Abstract
Self-motion can be perceived via podokinetic information, that is, based upon the movements of the legs during legged locomotion. This information can be integrated in order to perceive a path of travel through the environment (i.e., via podokinetic path integration). Two types of podokinetic information have been distinguished by analyzing the patterns of bias that result from manipulating the gait patterns used in direct-route homing tasks. Each type of podokinetic information has been associated specific groupings of gaits that support equivalent perceptual measurements of self-motion. Specifically, gaits are grouped if they can be varied across the outbound and inbound phases of a homing task (e.g., walking outbound and jogging inbound) and the accuracy of homing task performances does not differ from matched-gait control conditions. Recently, it was theorized that different types of podokinetic information are related to the differences in the kinematic form of limb motions in these groupings of gaits. Here we test an alternative hypothesis, namely that attention plays a role in selecting the type of podokinetic information. In three experiments, we manipulated the crawling gait patterns used in direct-route homing tasks. Consistent with our hypotheses, we observe that self-motion is equivalently measured via crawling movement patterns that (1) have distinct kinematic forms, but that similarly direct participants' attention onto controlling the swing phase trajectories of their arms, and (2) have distinct inter-limb coordination patterns (i.e., pace vs. trot), but do not require attention to be specifically focused upon swing phase arm trajectories.

Abstract
Reaching movements are guided by estimates of the target object's location. Since the precision of instantaneous estimates is limited, one might accumulate visual information over time. However, if the object is not stationary, accumulating information can bias the estimate. How do people deal with this trade-off between improving precision and reducing the bias? To find out, we asked participants to tap on targets. The targets were stationary or moving, with jitter added to their positions. By analysing the response to the jitter, we show that people continuously use the latest available information about the target's position. When the target is moving, they combine this instantaneous target position with an extrapolation based on the target's average velocity during the last several hundred milliseconds. This strategy leads to a bias if the target's velocity changes systematically. Having people tap on accelerating targets showed that the bias that results from ignoring systematic changes in velocity is removed by compensating for endpoint errors if such errors are consistent across trials. We conclude that combining simple continuous updating of visual information with the low-pass filter characteristics of muscles, and adjusting movements to compensate for errors made in previous trials, leads to the precise and accurate human goal-directed movements.

Abstract
Humans can freely adopt gait parameters like walking speed, step length, or cadence on the fly when walking. Planned movement that can be updated online to account for changes in the environment rather than having to rely on habitual, reflexive control that is adapted over long timescales. Here we present a neuromechanical model that accounts for this flexibility by combining movement goals and motor plans on a kinematic task level with low-level spinal feedback loops. We show that the model can walk at a wide range of different gait patterns by choosing a small number of high-level control parameters representing a movement goal. A larger number of parameters governing the low-level reflex loops in the spinal cord, on the other hand, remain fixed. We also show that the model can generalize the learned behavior by recombining the high-level control parameters and walk with gait patterns that it had not encountered before. Furthermore, the model can transition between different gaits without the loss of balance by switching to a new set of control parameters in real time.

Abstract
Existing models of human walking use low-level reflexes or neural oscillators to generate movement. While appropriate to generate the stable, rhythmic movement patterns of steady-state walking, these models lack the ability to change their movement patterns or spontaneously generate new movements in the specific, goal-directed way characteristic of voluntary movements. Here we present a neuromuscular model of human locomotion that bridges this gap and combines the ability to execute goal directed movements with the generation of stable, rhythmic movement patterns that are required for robust locomotion. The model represents goals for voluntary movements of the swing leg on the task level of swing leg joint kinematics. Smooth movements plans towards the goal configuration are generated on the task level and transformed into descending motor commands that execute the planned movements, using internal models. The movement goals and plans are updated in real time based on sensory feedback and task constraints. On the spinal level, the descending commands during the swing phase are integrated with a generic stretch reflex for each muscle. Stance leg control solely relies on dedicated spinal reflex pathways. Spinal reflexes stimulate Hill-type muscles that actuate a biomechanical model with eight internal joints and six free-body degrees of freedom. The model is able to generate voluntary, goal-directed reaching movements with the swing leg and combine multiple movements in a rhythmic sequence. During walking, the swing leg is moved in a goal-directed manner to a target that is updated in real-time based on sensory feedback to maintain upright balance, while the stance leg is stabilized by low-level reflexes and a behavioral organization switching between swing and stance control for each leg. With this combination of reflex-based stance leg and voluntary, goal-directed control of the swing leg, the model controller generates rhythmic, stable walking patterns in which the swing leg movement can be flexibly updated in real-time to step over or around obstacles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Following mild traumatic brain injury, individuals often exhibit quantifiable gait deficits over flat surfaces, but little is known about how they control gait over complex surfaces. Such complex surfaces require precise neuromotor control to anticipate and react to small disturbances in walking surfaces, and mild traumatic brain injury-related balance deficits may adversely affect these gait adjustments. METHODS This study investigates anticipatory and reactive gait adjustments for expected and unexpected underfoot perturbations in healthy adults (n = 5) and individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (n = 5). Participants completed walking trials with random unexpected or expected underfoot perturbations from a mechanized shoe and inertial measurement units collected kinematic data from the feet and sternum. Linear mixed-effects models assessed the effects of segment, group, and their interaction on standardized difference of accelerations between perturbation and non-perturbation trials. FINDINGS Both groups demonstrated similar gait strategies when perturbations were unexpected. During late swing phase before expected perturbations, persons with mild traumatic brain injury exhibited greater lateral acceleration of their perturbed foot and less lateral movement of their trunk compared with unperturbed gait. Control participants exhibited less lateral foot acceleration and no difference in mediolateral trunk acceleration compared with unperturbed gait during the same period. A significant group*segment interaction (p < 0.001) during this part of the gait cycle suggests the groups adopted different anticipatory strategies for the perturbation. INTERPRETATION Individuals with mild traumatic brain injury may be adopting cautious strategies for expected perturbations due to persistent neuromechanical deficits stemming from their injury.

Abstract
People with chronic stroke (PwCS) are susceptible to mediolateral losses of balance while walking, possibly due in part to inaccurate control of mediolateral paretic foot placement. We hypothesized that mediolateral foot placement errors when stepping to stationary or shifting visual targets would be larger for paretic steps than for steps taken by neurologically-intact individuals, hereby referred to as controls. Secondarily, we hypothesized that paretic foot placement errors would be correlated with previously identified deficits in isolated paretic hip abduction accuracy. 34 PwCS and 12 controls walked overground on an instrumented mat used to quantify foot placement location relative to parallel lines separated by various widths (10, 20, 30 cm). With stationary step width targets, foot placement errors were larger for paretic steps than for either non-paretic or control steps, most notably for the narrowest prescribed step width (mean absolute errors of 3.9, 2.3, and 1.9 cm, respectively). However, no differences in foot placement accuracy were observed immediately following visual target shifts, as all groups required multiple steps to achieve the new prescribed step width. Paretic hip abduction accuracy was moderately correlated with mediolateral foot placement accuracy when stepping to stationary targets (r = 0.49), but not shifting targets (r = 0.16). The present results suggest that a reduced ability to accurately abduct the paretic leg contributes to inaccurate paretic foot placement. However, the need to ensure mediolateral walking balance through mechanically-appropriate foot placement may often override the prescribed goal of stepping to visual targets, a concern of particular importance for narrow steps.

Abstract
During steady-state walking, mediolateral gait stability can be maintained by controlling the center of pressure (CoP). The CoP modulates the moment of the ground reaction force, which brakes and reverses movement of the center of mass (CoM) towards the lateral border of the base of support. In addition to foot placement, ankle moments serve to control the CoP. We hypothesized that, during steady-state walking, single stance ankle moments establish a CoP shift to correct for errors in foot placement. We expected ankle muscle activity to be associated with this complementary CoP shift. During treadmill walking, full-body kinematics, ground reaction forces and electromyography were recorded in thirty healthy participants. We found a negative relationship between preceding foot placement error and CoP displacement during single stance; steps that were too medial were compensated for by a lateral CoP shift and vice versa, steps that were too lateral were compensated for by a medial CoP shift. Peroneus longus, soleus and tibialis anterior activity correlated with these CoP shifts. As such, we identified an (active) ankle strategy during steady-state walking. As expected, absolute explained CoP variance by foot placement error decreased when walking with shoes constraining ankle moments. Yet, contrary to our expectations that ankle moment control would compensate for constrained foot placement, the absolute explained CoP variance by foot placement error did not increase when foot placement was constrained. We argue that this lack of compensation reflects the interdependent nature of ankle moment and foot placement control. We suggest that single stance ankle moments do not only compensate for preceding foot placement errors, but also assist control of the subsequent foot placement. Foot placement and ankle moment control are 'caught' in a circular relationship, in which constraints imposed on one will also influence the other.

Abstract
The capacity to recover after a perturbation is a well-known intrinsic property of physiological systems, including the locomotor system, and can be termed ‘resilience’. Despite an abundance of metrics proposed to measure the complex dynamics of bipedal locomotion, analytical tools for quantifying resilience are lacking. Here, we introduce a novel method to directly quantify resilience to perturbations during locomotion. We examined the extent to which synchronizing stepping with two different temporal structured auditory stimuli (periodic and 1/f structure) during walking modulates resilience to a large unexpected perturbation. Recovery time after perturbation was calculated from the horizontal velocity of the body's center of mass. Our results indicate that synchronizing stepping with a 1/f stimulus elicited greater resilience to mechanical perturbations during walking compared with the periodic stimulus (3.3 s faster). Our proposed method may help to gain a comprehensive understanding of movement recovery behavior of humans and other animals in their ecological contexts. Summary: A new method for the evaluation of intrinsic resilience during unsteady locomotion in humans and animals, analysing the relationship between the structure of movement variability and resilience.

Abstract
Step-by-step foot placement control, relative to the center of mass (CoM) kinematic state, is generally considered a dominant mechanism for maintenance of gait stability. By adequate (mediolateral) positioning of the center of pressure with respect to the CoM, the ground reaction force generates a moment that prevents falling. In healthy individuals, foot placement is complemented mainly by ankle moment control ensuring stability. To evaluate possible compensatory relationships between step-by-step foot placement and complementary ankle moments, we investigated the degree of (active) foot placement control during steady-state walking, and under either foot placement-, or ankle moment constraints. Thirty healthy participants walked on a treadmill, while full-body kinematics, ground reaction forces and EMG activities were recorded. As a replication of earlier findings, we first showed step-by-step foot placement is associated with preceding CoM state and hip ab-/adductor activity during steady-state walking. Tight control of foot placement appears to be important at normal walking speed because there was a limited change in the degree of foot placement control despite the presence of a foot placement constraint. At slow speed, the degree of foot placement control decreased substantially, suggesting that tight control of foot placement is less essential when walking slowly. Step-by-step foot placement control was not tightened to compensate for constrained ankle moments. Instead compensation was achieved through increases in step width and stride frequency.

Abstract
Motor behavior often occurs in environments with multiple goal options that can vary during the ongoing action. We explored this situation by requiring subjects to select between different target options during an ongoing reach. During split trials the original target was replaced with a left and a right flanking target, and participants had to select between them. This contrasted with the standard jump trials, where the original target would be replaced with a single flanking target, left or right. When participants were instructed to follow their natural tendency, they all tended to select the split target nearest the original. The near-target preference was more prominent with increased spatial disparity between the options and when participants could preview the potential options. Moreover, explicit instruction to obtain the "far" target during split trials resulted many errors compared with a "near" instruction, ~50% vs. ~15%. Online reaction times to target change were delayed in split trials compared with jump trials, ~200 ms vs. ~150 ms, but also highly automatic. Trials in which the instructed far target was correctly obtained were delayed by a further ~50 ms, unlike those in which the near target was incorrectly obtained. We also observed nonspecific responses from arm muscles at the jump trial latency during split trials. Taken together, our results indicate that online selection of reach targets is automatically linked to the spatial distribution of the options, though at greater delays than redirecting to a single target.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This work demonstrates that target selection during an ongoing reach is automatically linked to the option nearest a voided target. Online reaction times for two options are longer than redirection to a single option. Attempts to override the near-target tendency result in a high number of errors at the normal delay and further delays when the attempt is successful.

Abstract
Purpose Human sensory and motor systems deteriorate with age. When walking, older adults may therefore find it more difficult to adjust their steps to new visual information, especially considering that such adjustments require control of balance as well as of foot trajectory. Our study investigates the effects of ageing on lower limb responses to unpredictable target shifts. Methods Participants walked on a treadmill with projected stepping targets that occasionally shifted in the medial or lateral direction. The shifts occurred at a random moment during the early half of the swing phase of either leg. Kinematic, kinetic and muscle activity data were collected. Results Older adults responded later and corrected for a smaller proportion of the shift than young adults. The order in which muscle activation changed was similar in both groups, with responses of gluteus medius and semitendinosus from about 120 to 140 ms after the shift. Most muscles responded slightly later to lateral target shifts in the older adults than in the young adults, but this difference was not observed for medial target shifts. Ageing delayed the behavioural responses more than it did the electromyographic (EMG) responses. Conclusions Our study suggests that older adults can adjust their walking to small target shifts during the swing phase, but not as well as young adults. Furthermore, muscle strength probably plays a substantial role in the changes in online adjustments during ageing.
