The first part of the paper contains a short review of the image processing in early vision is static, when the eyes and the stimulus are stable, and in dynamics, when the eyes participate in fixation eye movements. In the second part, we give an interpretation of Donders’ and Listing’s law in terms of the Hopf fibration of the 3-sphere over the 2-sphere. In particular, it is shown that the configuration space of the eye ball (when the head is fixed) is the 2-dimensional hemisphere SL+, called Listing hemisphere, and saccades are described as geodesic segments of SL+ with respect to the standard round metric. We study fixation eye movements (drift and microsaccades) in terms of this model and discuss the role of fixation eye movements in vision. A model of fixation eye movements is proposed that gives an explanation of presaccadic shift of receptive fields.

Stereopsis and Eye Movement Abnormalities in Parkinson’s Disease and Their Clinical Implications

Background

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is not exclusively a motor disorder. Among non-motor features, patients with PD possess sensory visual dysfunctions. Depth perception and oculomotor deficits can significantly impact patients’ motor performance. Stereopsis and eye behavioral study using 3D stimuli may help determine their implications in disease status.

Objective

The objective of this study is to investigate stereopsis and eye movement abnormalities in PD with reliable tools and their correlation with indicators of PD severity. We hypothesize that patients with PD exhibit different eye behaviors and that these differences may correlate to the severity of motor symptoms and cognitive status.

Methods

Control and PD participants were first evaluated for visual acuity, visual field, contrast acuity, and stereo perception with 2D and Titmus stereotests, followed by the assessment with a 3D active shutter system. Eye movement behaviors were assessed by a Tobii X2-60 eye tracker.

Results

Screening visual tests did not reveal any differences between the PD and control groups. With the 3D active shutter system, the PD group demonstrated significantly worse stereopsis. The preserved cognitive function was correlated to a more intact stereo function. Patients with PD had longer visual response times, with a higher number of fixations and bigger saccade amplitude, suggesting fixation stabilization difficulties. Such changes showed a positive correlation with the severity of motor symptoms and a negative correlation with normal cognitive status.

Conclusion

We assessed stereopsis with a 3D active shutter system and oculomotor behaviors with the Tobii eye tracker. Patients with PD exhibit poorer stereopsis and impaired oculomotor behaviors during response time. These deficits were correlated with PD motor and cognitive status. The visual parameters may potentially serve as the clinical biomarkers for PD.

Stereopsis impairment is associated with decreased color perception and worse motor performance in Parkinson's disease

BACKGROUND

We conducted this study is to investigate the correlation between stereopsis dysfunction and color perception, as well as whether stereopsis impairment is associated with motor dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).

METHOD

Our present study included 45 PD patients and 50 non-PD control patients attending the Movement Disorder Center at Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University in Beijing from July 2011 to November 2011. Neurologic evaluations and visual function assessments were conducted, and the results between two groups of patients were compared.

RESULTS

We found that the total error scores (TESs) and partial error scores (PESs) for red, green, blue and purple were all significantly higher in PD patients than in control patients. The limited grade on the FLY Stereo Acuity Test with LEA Symbols was significantly lower in PD patients than in control patients (P = 0.0001), whereas the percentage of abnormal stereopsis in PD patients was significantly higher than in control patients (42.2% vs. 12%; P = 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that PD patients with higher Hoehn and Yahr Scale stage, and those with decreased stereopsis had higher Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) motor scores and worse motor function. Furthermore, our study demonstrates that the UPDRS motor scores and total average number of the Purdue Pegboard Test scores of PD patients were significantly improved when they had taken their medications, and the TESs and PESs for green were lower in when they were off their medications.

CONCLUSION

Our results provide more information on the underlying mechanisms of vision, motor and stereopsis impairments in PD patients.

Simulating the cortical 3D visuomotor transformation of reach depth

We effortlessly perform reach movements to objects in different directions and depths. However, how networks of cortical neurons compute reach depth from binocular visual inputs remains largely unknown. To bridge the gap between behavior and neurophysiology, we trained a feed-forward artificial neural network to uncover potential mechanisms that might underlie the 3D transformation of reach depth. Our physiologically-inspired 4-layer network receives distributed 3D visual inputs (1^st layer) along with eye, head and vergence signals. The desired motor plan was coded in a population (3^rd layer) that we read out (4^th layer) using an optimal linear estimator. After training, our network was able to reproduce all known single-unit recording evidence on depth coding in the parietal cortex. Network analyses predict the presence of eye/head and vergence changes of depth tuning, pointing towards a gain-modulation mechanism of depth transformation. In addition, reach depth was computed directly from eye-centered (relative) visual distances, without explicit absolute depth coding. We suggest that these effects should be observable in parietal and pre-motor areas.

Distance modulated neuronal activity in the cortical visual areas of cats

During previous studies in cats and monkeys, it was found that in some neurons, responses to visual stimuli of the same angular size were dependent on the absolute distance to these stimuli. To study how widely this peculiarity of visual responses is distributed among cortical visual areas, we recorded activity of neurons in areas V4A, V2, V1, and frontal visual area on the lower bank of the cruciate sulcus. Neuronal activity was recorded at near (20 cm) or far (3 m) distances from a 3D stationary visual scene. Visual scenes were vertically corrugated light gray screens. Angular dimensions of the screens were the same at short and far distances. Eye movements were free during the test procedure. It was found that about 20% of neurons in areas V4A, V1, and frontal visual area had significantly different levels of activity, while animals were looking at the visual scenes located near or far from the eyes. No neurons with depth modulated activity were found in area V2.
