Increasing the Service Life of Marine Transport Using Heat-Resistant Polymer Nanocomposites

This paper presents the technological aspects of increasing the thermal stability of polymers, with epoxy binder used to form the polymer materials. Polyethylene polyamine was used to crosslink the epoxy binder. To ensure the thermal stability of the polymer, nanodispersed condensed carbon with a dispersion of 10-16 nm was used. The research into nanocomposites under the influence of elevated temperatures was carried out using the "Thermoscan-2" derivatograph. Complex studies of thermophysical properties were carried out, according to the results of which the optimal content of nanofiller (0.050 pts.wt.) was determined. At the same time, this particular polymer was characterized by the following properties: temperature of the beginning of mass loss-T0 = 624.9 K; final temperature of mass loss-Tf = 718.7 K; relative mass loss-εm = 60.3%. Research into the activation energy of thermal destruction was performed to determine the resistance to the destruction of chemical bonds. It was proved that the maximum value of activation energy (170.1 kJ/mol) is characterized by nanocomposites with a content of nanodispersed condensed carbon of 0.050 pts.wt., which indicates the thermal stability of the polymer.

Comparative Study of Three Carbon Additives: Carbon Nanotubes, Graphene, and Fullerene-C60, for Synthesizing Enhanced Polymer Nanocomposites

While nanoparticles from the carbon family have been incorporated effectively for polymer matrixes, there is no clear information available for understanding the impacts of the morphology of different carbon nanoparticles on the performance of carbon-based nanocomposites. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a comprehensive, comparative investigation to systematically assess the impacts of nanoparticles on the tribological, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of the epoxy coatings using three representative 0D, 1D, and 2D nanoparticles: Fullerene-C60 (C60), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The anti-corrosion performance of the nanocomposites in both the short and long term was characterized. The mechanical properties were examined by abrasion, adhesion, and tensile tests. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was conducted to determine their chemical structures, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine their surface texture. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that the coatings reinforced by C60 and GNP had better anti-corrosion performance than that of the CNT/epoxy samples. The incorporation of C60 and CNT led to a considerable improvement in tensile properties, while improved abrasion resistance was observed in all types of nanofiller/epoxy groups. C60-loaded composites exhibited a significant enhancement in tensile properties as compared to CNT or GNP composites.

Enhanced Protective Coatings Based on Nanoparticle fullerene C60 for Oil & Gas Pipeline Corrosion Mitigation

Corrosion accounts for huge maintenance cost in the pipeline community. Promotion of protective coatings used for oil/gas pipeline corrosion control, in terms of high corrosion resistance as well as high damage tolerance, are still in high demand. This study was to explore the inclusion of nanoparticle fullerene-C60 in protective coatings for oil/gas pipeline corrosion control and mitigation. Fullerene-C60/epoxy nanocomposite coatings were fabricated using a solvent-free dispersion method through high-speed disk (HSD) and ultrasonication. The morphology of fullerene-C60 particles was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The data analysis indicated that the nanoparticles were effectively dispersed in the matrix. The performance of the nanocomposites was investigated through their mechanical and electrochemical properties, including corrosion potential, tensile strength, strain at failure, adhesion to substrate, and durability performance. Dogbone shaped samples were fabricated to study the tensile properties of the nanocomposites, and improvement of strength, ultimate strain, and Young’s modulus were observed in the C60/epoxy specimens. The results demonstrated that the C60/epoxy composite coatings also had improvements in adhesion strength, suggesting that they could provide high damage tolerance of coatings for engineering applications. Moreover, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results generated from the accelerated durability test revealed that the developed fullerene-C60 loaded composite coatings exhibited significantly improved corrosion resistance. The nanocomposite with 0.5 and 1.0 wt.% of C60 particles behaved as an intact layer for corrosion protection, even after 200-h salt spray exposure, as compared to the control coating without nanofiller in which severe damage by over 50% reduction was observed.

Effect of carbon nanotube (CNT) functionalization in Epoxy-CNT composites

The effect of carbon nanotube (CNT) functionalization in altering the properties of Epoxy-CNT composites is presented. The presence of functional groups effectively influenced the colloidal behavior of CNTs in the precursor epoxy resin and the hardener triethylenetetramine (TETA), which affected the synthesis process and eventually the interfacial interactions between the polymer matrix and the CNTs. The physical, thermal and electrical properties of the composites exhibited strong dependence on the nature of functionalization. At a 0.5 wt% CNTs loading, the enhancement in tensile strength was found to be 7.2, 11.2, 11.4 and 14.2 percent for raw CNTs, carboxylated CNTs, octadecyl amide functionalized CNTs and hydroxylated CNTs, respectively. Glass transition temperatures (T_g) also varied with the functionalization and composite prepared using hydroxylated CNTs showed the maximum enhancement of 34%.

Bactericidal activity of partially oxidized nanodiamonds

Nanodiamonds are a class of carbon-based nanoparticles that are rapidly gaining attention, particularly for biomedical applications, i.e., as drug carriers, for bioimaging, or as implant coatings. Nanodiamonds have generally been considered biocompatible with a broad variety of eukaryotic cells. We show that, depending on their surface composition, nanodiamonds kill Gram-positive and -negative bacteria rapidly and efficiently. We investigated six different types of nanodiamonds exhibiting diverse oxygen-containing surface groups that were created using standard pretreatment methods for forming nanodiamond dispersions. Our experiments suggest that the antibacterial activity of nanodiamond is linked to the presence of partially oxidized and negatively charged surfaces, specifically those containing acid anhydride groups. Furthermore, proteins were found to control the bactericidal properties of nanodiamonds by covering these surface groups, which explains the previously reported biocompatibility of nanodiamonds. Our findings describe the discovery of an exciting property of partially oxidized nanodiamonds as a potent antibacterial agent.
