Fiber-based ultrashort pulse delivery for nonlinear imaging using high-energy solitons

Characterization and adaptive compression of a multi-soliton laser source

Ultrashort pulse generation in the 1600 nm wavelength region is required for deep-tissue biomedical imaging. We report on the characterization and adaptive compression of a multi-soliton output spanning >300 nm from a large-mode area photonic-crystal fiber rod for two separate laser setups. Sub-30 fs pulses are generated by first compressing of each soliton individually, and then followed by coherently combining all of the pulses in the train, which are separated by hundreds of femtoseconds. Simulations of the source, together with amplitude and phase coherence measurements are provided.

Self-frequency-shifted solitons in a polarization-maintaining, very-large-mode area, Er-doped fiber amplifier

We demonstrate soliton self-frequency-shifted, femtosecond-pulse amplification in a newly-developed, polarization-maintaining, Er-doped, very-large-mode-area fiber amplifier. The PM-VLMA Er fiber had a core diameter of 50 μm, an effective area of ~1050 μm², and Er absorption of 50 dB/m. The measured birefringence beat length of the PM-VLMA Er fiber was 14.1 mm. The soliton wavelength could be shifted by more than 90 nm. The soliton generation process resulted in remarkably clean, 86 fs pulses with 21 nJ energy at 1650 nm and 244 kW peak power from an all-fiber, fusion spliced system without bulk-optics for pulse compression. The polarization extinction ratio of the soliton was greater than 40 dB, and the M² was 1.1. The fully polarization-maintaining fiber laser system provides robust and stable soliton generation. Peak-to-peak variation in the soliton wavelength, measured over the course of an hour was only 0.03% and pulse energy variation was only 0.5%.

Solitonization of a dispersive wave

We report the observation of a nonlinear propagation scenario in which a dispersive wave is transformed into a fundamental soliton in an axially varying optical fiber. The dispersive wave is initially emitted in the normal dispersion region and the fiber properties change longitudinally so that the dispersion becomes anomalous at the dispersive wave wavelength, which allows it to be transformed into a soliton. The solitonic nature of the field is demonstrated by solving the direct Zakharov-Shabat scattering problem. Experimental characterization performed in spectral and temporal domains show evidence of the solitonization process in an axially varying photonic crystal fiber.

Nonlinear femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy using a power-encoded soliton delay line

We show femtosecond time-resolved nonlinear pump-probe spectroscopy using a fiber soliton as the probe pulse. Furthermore, we exploit soliton dynamics to record an entire transient trace with a power-encoded delay sweep. The power-encoded delay line takes advantage of the dependency of the soliton trajectory in the (λ,z) space upon input power; the difference in accumulated group delay between trajectories converts a fast power sweep into a fast delay sweep. We demonstrate the concept by performing transient absorption spectroscopy in a test sample and validate it against a conventional pump-probe setup.
