Skin Cancer Detection Using Infrared Thermography: Measurement Setup, Procedure and Equipment

Infrared thermography technology has improved dramatically in recent years and is gaining renewed interest in the medical community for applications in skin tissue identification applications. However, there is still a need for an optimized measurement setup and protocol to obtain the most appropriate images for decision making and further processing. Nowadays, various cooling methods, measurement setups and cameras are used, but a general optimized cooling and measurement protocol has not been defined yet. In this literature review, an overview of different measurement setups, thermal excitation techniques and infrared camera equipment is given. It is possible to improve thermal images of skin lesions by choosing an appropriate cooling method, infrared camera and optimized measurement setup.

Noninvasive intratumoral thermal dose determination during in vivo magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia: combining surface temperature measurements and computer simulations

PURPOSE

Noninvasive thermometry during magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia (MNH) remains a challenge. Our pilot study proposes a methodology to determine the noninvasive intratumoral thermal dose during MNH in the subcutaneous tumor model.

METHODS

Two groups of Ehrlich bearing-mice with solid and subcutaneous carcinoma, a control group (n = 6), and a MNH treated group (n = 4) were investigated. Histopathology was used to evaluate the percentage of non-viable lesions in the tumor. MNH was performed at 301 kHz and 17.5 kA.m^-1, using a multifunctional nanocarrier. Surface temperature measurements were obtained using an infrared camera, where an ROI with 750 pixels was used for comparison with computer simulations. Realistic simulations of the bioheat equation were obtained by combining histopathology intratumoral lesion information and surface temperature agreement of at least 50% of the pixel's temperature data calculated and measured at the surface.

RESULTS

One animal of the MNH group showed tumor recurrence, while two others showed complete tumor remission (monitored for 585 days). Sensitivity analysis of the simulation parameters indicated low tumor blood perfusion. Numerical simulations indicated, for the animals with complete remission, an irreversible tissue injury of 91 ± 5% and 100%, while the one with recurrence had a lower value, 56 ± 7%. The computer simulations also revealed the in vivo heat efficiency of the nanocarrier.

CONCLUSION

A new methodology for determining noninvasively the three-dimensional intratumoral thermal dose during MNH was developed. The method demonstrates the potential for predicting the long-term preclinical outcome of animals treated with MNH.

Active thermodynamic contrast imaging for label-free tumor detection in a murine xenograft tumor model

Passive thermal imaging provides a limited differentiation between a tumor and neighboring tissue based on the temperature difference. We propose active thermodynamic contrast imaging (ATCI) with convection thermal modulators to provide more physiologically relevant parameters with high contrast such as the rate of temperature change, and thermal recovery time for tumor detection with a murine xenograft tumor model. With early stage tumors, we found the average rate of temperature change was higher in the tumor (0.22 ± 0.06 [Formula: see text]/sec) than that of neighboring tissue (0.13 ± 0.01 [Formula: see text]/sec) with heating modulation. With established tumors (volume > 100 mm³), this tendency was greater. On the other hand, the thermal recovery time was shorter in tumor tissue (τ = 7.30 ± 0.59 sec) than that of neighboring tissue (τ = 11.91 ± 2.22 sec). We also found distinct thermal contrast with cooling modulation. These data suggest ATCI is a potential tumor detection modality for clinical application with its inherently label-free and physiology-based approach. Furthermore, this strategy may find applications in endoscopic tumor detection in the future.

Vision-based measurement for rotational speed by improving Lucas-Kanade template tracking algorithm

Rotational angle and speed are important parameters for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of rotating machineries, and their measurement is useful in precision machining and early warning of faults. In this study, a novel vision-based measurement algorithm is proposed to complete this task. A high-speed camera is first used to capture the video of the rotational object. To extract the rotational angle, the template-based Lucas-Kanade algorithm is introduced to complete motion tracking by aligning the template image in the video sequence. Given the special case of nonplanar surface of the cylinder object, a nonlinear transformation is designed for modeling the rotation tracking. In spite of the unconventional and complex form, the transformation can realize angle extraction concisely with only one parameter. A simulation is then conducted to verify the tracking effect, and a practical tracking strategy is further proposed to track consecutively the video sequence. Based on the proposed algorithm, instantaneous rotational speed (IRS) can be measured accurately and efficiently. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified on a brushless direct current motor test rig through the comparison with results obtained by the microphone. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can extract accurately rotational angles and can measure IRS with the advantage of noncontact and effectiveness.

Motion tracking in infrared imaging for quantitative medical diagnostic applications

In medical applications, infrared (IR) thermography is used to detect and examine the thermal signature of skin abnormalities by quantitatively analyzing skin temperature in steady state conditions or its evolution over time, captured in an image sequence. However, during the image acquisition period, the involuntary movements of the patient are unavoidable, and such movements will undermine the accuracy of temperature measurement for any particular location on the skin. In this study, a tracking approach using a template-based algorithm is proposed, to follow the involuntary motion of the subject in the IR image sequence. The motion tacking will allow to associate a temperature evolution to each spatial location on the body while the body moves relative to the image frame. The affine transformation model is adopted to estimate the motion parameters of the template image. The Lucas-Kanade algorithm is applied to search for the optimized parameters of the affine transformation. A weighting mask is incorporated into the algorithm to ensure its tracking robustness. To evaluate the feasibility of the tracking approach, two sets of IR image sequences with random in-plane motion were tested in our experiments. A steady-state (no heating or cooling) IR image sequence in which the skin temperature is in equilibrium with the environment was considered first. The thermal recovery IR image sequence, acquired when the skin is recovering from 60-s cooling, was the second case analyzed. By proper selection of the template image along with template update, satisfactory tracking results were obtained for both IR image sequences. The achieved tracking accuracies are promising in terms of satisfying the demands imposed by clinical applications of IR thermography.
