An attenuation field network for dedicated cone beam breast CT with short scan and offset detector geometry

The feasibility of full-scan, offset-detector geometry cone-beam CT has been demonstrated for several clinical applications. For full-scan acquisition with offset-detector geometry, data redundancy from complementary views can be exploited during image reconstruction. Envisioning an upright breast CT system, we propose to acquire short-scan data in conjunction with offset-detector geometry. To tackle the resulting incomplete data, we have developed a self-supervised attenuation field network (AFN). AFN leverages the inherent redundancy of cone-beam CT data through coordinate-based representation and known imaging physics. A trained AFN can query attenuation coefficients using their respective coordinates or synthesize projection data including the missing projections. The AFN was evaluated using clinical cone-beam breast CT datasets (n = 50). While conventional analytical and iterative reconstruction methods failed to reconstruct the incomplete data, AFN reconstruction was not statistically different from the reference reconstruction obtained using full-scan, full-detector data in terms of image noise, image contrast, and the full width at half maximum of calcifications. This study indicates the feasibility of a simultaneous short-scan and offset-detector geometry for dedicated breast CT imaging. The proposed AFN technique can potentially be expanded to other cone-beam CT applications.

Bilateral extended FDK: An improved weighting method for static CT imaging

BACKGROUND

Improving imaging speed has always been the focus of research in CT technology, which is related to the radiation dose and imaging quality of moving organs, including heart and blood vessels. However, it is difficult to achieve further improvement by increasing the rotation speed of the gantry due to its structural strength limitation. Differing from the conventional CTs, the static CT employs dozens of ray sources to acquire projection data from different angular ranges, and each source only needs to be rotated in a small range to finish a full 360° scan, thus greatly increasing the scanning speed.

PURPOSE

As sources of static CT need to be evenly distributed over 360°, the sources and detectors have to be arranged on two parallel rings independently. Such a geometry can be considered as a special case of CT systems with a significantly large cone angle, that is, a part of the detector is missing in the vicinity of the mid-plane. Due to restriction of upper and lower bounds of the cone angle of the static CT, there are uneven projection data varying in each portion of the reconstruction volume, the conventional analytical or iterative reconstruction methods may introduce artifacts in the reconstructed outcomes.

METHODS

Following the weighting approach extended FDK (xFDK) by Grimmer et al., we propose an improved bilateral xFDK algorithm (bixFDK), which focuses on the reconstruction of the expanded volume. With the same philosophy as xFDK in terms of weighting function design, bixFDK takes the longitudinal offset of the detector with respect to the source into consideration, making our method applicable to a wide range of CT geometries, especially for the static CT. Based on the proposed bixFDK, a new iterative scheme bixFDK-IR is also constructed to extend the applications to a wide range of scan protocols such as sparse-view scan.

RESULTS

The proposed method has been validated with the simulated phantom data and the actual clinical data of the static CT, and demonstrates that it can ensure good image quality and enlarge the reconstruction volume in z-direction of the static CT.

CONCLUSIONS

The bixFDK algorithm is an ideal reconstruction approach for static CT geometry, and the iterative scheme of bixFDK-IR is applicable to a wide range of CT geometries and scan protocols, thus providing a wide range of application scenarios.

SHCT: segmented helical computed tomography based on multiple slant source-translation

Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) is inevitably required to inspect long large objects with high resolution. It is well known that helical CT solves the so-called "long object" problem, but it requires that the measured object be strictly located in the lateral field of view (FOV). Therefore, developing a novel scanning method to extend the FOV in both the lateral and axial directions (i.e., the large helical FOV) is necessary. Recently, due to the application of linearly distributed source arrays and the characteristics of easy extension of the FOV and engineering implementation, straight-line scanning systems have attracted much attention. In this paper, we propose a segmented helical computed tomography (SHCT) based on multiple slant source-translation. SHCT can readily extend the helical FOV by adjusting the source slant translation (SST) length, pitch (or elevation of the SST trajectory), and number of scanning circles. In SHCT, each projection view is truncated laterally and axially, but the projection data set within the cylindrical FOV region is complete. To ensure reconstruction efficiency and avoid the lateral truncation, we propose a generalized backprojection-filtration (G-BPF) algorithm for SHCT approximate reconstruction. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed SHCT methods for imaging large and long objects. As the pitch decreases, the proposed SHCT methods can reconstruct competitive, high-quality volumes.

Cone-beam breast CT using an offset detector: effect of detector offset and image reconstruction algorithm

Objective.A dedicated cone-beam breast computed tomography (BCT) using a high-resolution, low-noise detector operating in offset-detector geometry has been developed. This study investigates the effects of varying detector offsets and image reconstruction algorithms to determine the appropriate combination of detector offset and reconstruction algorithm.Approach.Projection datasets (300 projections in 360°) of 30 breasts containing calcified lesions that were acquired using a prototype cone-beam BCT system comprising a 40 × 30 cm flat-panel detector with 1024 × 768 detector pixels were reconstructed using Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) algorithm and served as the reference. The projection datasets were retrospectively truncated to emulate cone-beam datasets with sinograms of 768×768 and 640×768 detector pixels, corresponding to 5 cm and 7.5 cm lateral offsets, respectively. These datasets were reconstructed using the FDK algorithm with appropriate weights and an ASD-POCS-based Fast, total variation-Regularized, Iterative, Statistical reconstruction Technique (FRIST), resulting in a total of 4 offset-detector reconstructions (2 detector offsets × 2 reconstruction methods). Signal difference-to-noise ratio (SDNR), variance, and full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of calcifications in two orthogonal directions were determined from all reconstructions. All quantitative measurements were performed on images in units of linear attenuation coefficient (1/cm).Results.The FWHM of calcifications did not differ (P > 0.262) among reconstruction algorithms and detector formats, implying comparable spatial resolution. For a chosen detector offset, the FRIST algorithm outperformed FDK in terms of variance and SDNR (P < 0.0001). For a given reconstruction method, the 5 cm offset provided better results.Significance.This study indicates the feasibility of using the compressed sensing-based, FRIST algorithm to reconstruct sinograms from offset-detectors. Among the reconstruction methods and detector offsets studied, FRIST reconstructions corresponding to a 30 cm × 30 cm with 5 cm lateral offset, achieved the best performance. A clinical prototype using such an offset geometry has been developed and installed for clinical trials.

Extended imaging volume in cone-beam x-ray tomography using the weighted simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique

An issue in computerized x-ray tomography is the limited size of available detectors relative to objects of interest. A solution was provided in the past two decades by positioning the detector in a lateral offset position, increasing the effective field of view (FOV) and thus the diameter of the reconstructed volume. However, this introduced artifacts in the obtained reconstructions, caused by projection truncation and data redundancy. These issues can be addressed by incorporating an additional data weighting step in the reconstruction algorithms, known as redundancy weighting. In this work, we present an implementation of redundancy weighting in the widely-used simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique (SIRT), yielding the weighted SIRT (W-SIRT) method. The new technique is validated using geometric phantoms and a rabbit specimen, by performing both simulation studies as well as physical experiments. The experiments are carried out in a highly flexible stereoscopic x-ray system equipped with x-ray image intensifiers (XRIIs). The simulations showed that higher values of contrast-to-noise ratio could be obtained using the W-SIRT approach as compared to a weighted implementation of the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART). The convergence rate of the W-SIRT was accelerated by including a relaxation parameter in the W-SIRT algorithm, creating the aW-SIRT algorithm. This allowed to obtain the same results as the W-SIRT algorithm, but at half the number of iterations, yielding a much shorter computation time. The aW-SIRT algorithm has proven to perform well for both large as well as small regions of overlap, outperforming the pre-convolutional Feldkamp-David-Kress algorithm for small overlap regions (or large detector offsets). The experiments confirmed the results of the simulations. Using the aW-SIRT algorithm, the effective FOV was increased by >75%, only limited by experimental constraints. Although an XRII is used in this work, the method readily applies to flat-panel detectors as well.

Dedicated cone-beam breast CT using laterally-shifted detector geometry: Quantitative analysis of feasibility for clinical translation

BACKGROUND

High-resolution, low-noise detectors with minimal dead-space at chest-wall could improve posterior coverage and microcalcification visibility in the dedicated cone-beam breast CT (CBBCT). However, the smaller field-of-view necessitates laterally-shifted detector geometry to enable optimizing the air-gap for x-ray scatter rejection.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate laterally-shifted detector geometry for CBBCT with clinical projection datasets that provide for anatomical structures and lesions.

METHODS

CBBCT projection datasets (n = 17 breasts) acquired with a 40×30 cm detector (1024×768-pixels, 0.388-mm pixels) were truncated along the fan-angle to emulate 20.3×30 cm, 22.2×30 cm and 24.1×30 cm detector formats and correspond to 20, 120, 220 pixels overlap in conjugate views, respectively. Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) algorithm with 3 different weighting schemes were used for reconstruction. Visual analysis for artifacts and quantitative analysis of root-mean-squared-error (RMSE), absolute difference between truncated and 40×30 cm reconstructions (Diff), and its power spectrum (PSDiff) were performed.

RESULTS

Artifacts were observed for 20.3×30 cm, but not for other formats. The 24.1×30 cm provided the best quantitative results with RMSE and Diff (both in units of μ, cm-1) of 4.39×10-3±1.98×10-3 and 4.95×10-4±1.34×10-4, respectively. The PSDiff (>0.3 cycles/mm) was in the order of 10-14μ2mm3 and was spatial-frequency independent.

CONCLUSIONS

Laterally-shifted detector CBBCT with at least 220 pixels overlap in conjugate views (24.1×30 cm detector format) provides quantitatively accurate and artifact-free image reconstruction.

Half-Fan-Based Intensity-Weighted Region-of-Interest Imaging for Low-Dose Cone-Beam CT in Image-Guided Radiation Therapy

Objectives

With the increased use of computed tomography (CT) in clinics, dose reduction is the most important feature people seek when considering new CT techniques or applications. We developed an intensity-weighted region-of-interest (IWROI) imaging method in an exact half-fan geometry to reduce the imaging radiation dose to patients in cone-beam CT (CBCT) for image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). While dose reduction is highly desirable, preserving the high-quality images of the ROI is also important for target localization in IGRT.

Methods

An intensity-weighting (IW) filter made of copper was mounted in place of a bowtie filter on the X-ray tube unit of an on-board imager (OBI) system such that the filter can substantially reduce radiation exposure to the outer ROI. In addition to mounting the IW filter, the lead-blade collimation of the OBI was adjusted to produce an exact half-fan scanning geometry for a further reduction of the radiation dose. The chord-based rebinned backprojection-filtration (BPF) algorithm in circular CBCT was implemented for image reconstruction, and a humanoid pelvis phantom was used for the IWROI imaging experiment.

Results

The IWROI image of the phantom was successfully reconstructed after beam-quality correction, and it was registered to the reference image within an acceptable level of tolerance. Dosimetric measurements revealed that the dose is reduced by approximately 61% in the inner ROI and by 73% in the outer ROI compared to the conventional bowtie filter-based half-fan scan.

Conclusions

The IWROI method substantially reduces the imaging radiation dose and provides reconstructed images with an acceptable level of quality for patient setup and target localization. The proposed half-fan-based IWROI imaging technique can add a valuable option to CBCT in IGRT applications.

Axial Cone-Beam Reconstruction by Weighted BPF/DBPF and Orthogonal Butterfly Filtering

GOAL

The backprojection-filtration (BPF) and the derivative backprojection filtered (DBPF) algorithms, in which Hilbert filtering is the common algorithmic feature, are originally derived for exact helical reconstruction from cone-beam (CB) scan data and axial reconstruction from fan beam data, respectively. These two algorithms can be heuristically extended for image reconstruction from axial CB scan data, but induce severe artifacts in images located away from the central plane, determined by the circular source trajectory. We propose an algorithmic solution herein to eliminate the artifacts.

METHODS

The solution is an integration of three-dimensional (3-D) weighted axial CB-BPF/DBPF algorithm with orthogonal butterfly filtering, namely axial CB-BPF/DBPF cascaded with orthogonal butterfly filtering. Using the computer simulated Forbild head and thoracic phantoms that are rigorous in inspecting the reconstruction accuracy, and an anthropomorphic thoracic phantom with projection data acquired by a CT scanner, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

RESULTS

Preliminary results show that the orthogonal butterfly filtering can eliminate the severe streak artifacts existing in the images reconstructed by the 3-D weighted axial CB-BPF/DBPF algorithm located at off-central planes.

CONCLUSION

Integrated with orthogonal butterfly filtering, the 3-D weighted CB-BPF/DBPF algorithm can perform at least as well as the 3-D weighted CB-FBP algorithm in image reconstruction from axial CB scan data.

SIGNIFICANCE

The proposed 3-D weighted axial CB-BPF/DBPF cascaded with orthogonal butterfly filtering can be an algorithmic solution for CT imaging in extensive clinical and preclinical applications.

Interior micro-CT with an offset detector

PURPOSE

The size of field-of-view (FOV) of a microcomputed tomography (CT) system can be increased by offsetting the detector. The increased FOV is beneficial in many applications. All prior investigations, however, have been focused to the case in which the increased FOV after offset-detector acquisition can cover the transaxial extent of an object fully. Here, the authors studied a new problem where the FOV of a micro-CT system, although increased after offset-detector acquisition, still covers an interior region-of-interest (ROI) within the object.

METHODS

An interior-ROI-oriented micro-CT scan with an offset detector poses a difficult reconstruction problem, which is caused by both detector offset and projection truncation. Using the projection completion techniques, the authors first extended three previous reconstruction methods from offset-detector micro-CT to offset-detector interior micro-CT. The authors then proposed a novel method which combines two of the extended methods using a frequency split technique. The authors tested the four methods with phantom simulations at 9.4%, 18.8%, 28.2%, and 37.6% detector offset. The authors also applied these methods to physical phantom datasets acquired at the same amounts of detector offset from a customized micro-CT system.

RESULTS

When the detector offset was small, all reconstruction methods showed good image quality. At large detector offset, the three extended methods gave either visible shading artifacts or high deviation of pixel value, while the authors' proposed method demonstrated no visible artifacts and minimal deviation of pixel value in both the numerical simulations and physical experiments.

CONCLUSIONS

For an interior micro-CT with an offset detector, the three extended reconstruction methods can perform well at a small detector offset but show strong artifacts at a large detector offset. When the detector offset is large, the authors' proposed reconstruction method can outperform the three extended reconstruction methods by suppressing artifacts and maintaining pixel values.
