A noise smoothing origin ensemble algorithm based on local filtering

An origin ensemble (OE) image reconstruction algorithm can be used for the fast reconstruction of unconventional geometrical images, e.g. in a Compton camera (CC) system. Due to the low-count rate in the emission data, the reconstructed image is often noisy and inhomogeneous in density. In this study, we propose a way to smooth out the noise in the OE algorithm. During the OE reconstruction, the algorithm stochastically modifies the current location to a random new voxel along the probable corresponding curve of each event depending on the relative event density of the new and old locations. In the original OE technique, the event density is simply the number of events in the voxel. In the proposed method, the event density is estimated from the filtering of a kernel window centered on the voxel. Incorporating the regional filtering is similar to performing an OE algorithm on a smoothed image at each iteration and enables the reconstruction of a smoother image. A Flangeless Esser PET phantom and a multi-activity phantom are used to study the property of the new reconstruction algorithm. The results indicate that the proposed method performs better than a conventional OE algorithm in terms of normalized mean square error (NMSE) and structural similarity (SSIM). Both contrast noise ratio (CNR) and reconstruction accuracy of the new method are better than the conventional OE algorithm and their performances improve with the increase of object size. The median-OE possesses the highest overall image quality and recovery rate among the three filter-OE algorithms and is the method of choice for image reconstruction. Comparing to conventional post-smoothing OEs, the NMSE of median-OE improves 57.6% (46.9%) and the SSIM increased by 73.2% (51.1%) for the Esser (multi-activity) phantom. The proposed OE algorithm is simple and efficient for noise smoothing without complex calculations and highly suited for low-count cases.

Joint Reconstruction of Activity and Attenuation in Time-of-Flight PET: A Quantitative Analysis

Methods for joint activity reconstruction and attenuation reconstruction of time-of-flight (TOF) PET data provide an effective solution to attenuation correction when no (or incomplete or inaccurate) information on attenuation is available. One of the main barriers limiting use of these methods in clinical practice is their lack of validation in a relatively large patient database. In this contribution, we aim to validate reconstruction performed with maximum-likelihood activity reconstruction and attenuation registration (MLRR) in a whole-body patient dataset. Furthermore, a partial validation (because the scale problem of the algorithm is avoided for now) of reconstruction performed with maximum-likelihood activity and attenuation (MLAA) is also provided. We present a quantitative comparison between these 2 methods of joint reconstruction and the current clinical gold standard, maximum-likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) with CT-based attenuation correction. Methods: The whole-body TOF PET emission data of each patient dataset were processed as a whole to reconstruct an activity volume covering all the acquired bed positions, helping reduce the problem of a scale per bed position in MLAA to a global scale for the entire activity volume. Three reconstruction algorithms were used: MLEM, MLRR, and MLAA. A maximum-likelihood scaling of the single-scatter simulation estimate to the emission data was used for scatter correction. The reconstruction results for various regions of interest were then analyzed. Results: The joint reconstructions of the whole-body patient dataset provided better quantification than the gold standard in cases of PET and CT misalignment caused by patient or organ motion. Our quantitative analysis showed a difference of -4.2% ± 2.3% between MLRR and MLEM and a difference of -7.5% ± 4.6% between MLAA and MLEM, averaged over all regions of interest. Conclusion: Joint reconstruction of activity and attenuation provides a useful means to estimate tracer distribution when CT-based-attenuation images are subject to misalignment or are not available. With an accurate estimate of the scatter contribution in the emission measurements, the joint reconstructions of TOF PET data are within clinically acceptable accuracy.

Quality assessment of positron emission tomography scans: recommendations for future multicentre trials

BACKGROUND

Standardization protocols and guidelines for positron emission tomography (PET) in multicenter trials are available, despite a large variability in image acquisition and reconstruction parameters exist. In this study, we investigated the compliance of PET scans to the guidelines of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM). From these results, we provide recommendations for future multicenter studies using PET.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Patients included in a multicenter randomized phase II study had repeated PET scans for early response assessment. Relevant acquisition and reconstruction parameters were extracted from the digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) header of the images. The PET image parameters were compared to the guidelines of the EANM for tumor imaging version 1.0 recommended parameters.

RESULTS

From the 223 included patients, 167 baseline scans and 118 response scans were available from 15 hospitals. Scans of 19% of the patients had an uptake time that fulfilled the Uniform Protocols for Imaging in Clinical Trials response assessment criteria. The average quality score over all hospitals was 69%. Scans with a non-compliant uptake time had a larger standard deviation of the mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) of the liver than scans with compliant uptake times.

CONCLUSIONS

Although a standardization protocol was agreed on, there was a large variability in imaging parameters. For future, multicenter studies including PET imaging a prospective central quality review during patient inclusion is needed to improve compliance with image standardization protocols as defined by EANM.

The origin ensemble (OE) algorithm is a new method used for image reconstruction from nuclear tomographic data. The main advantage of this algorithm is the ease of implementation for complex tomographic models and the sound statistical theory. In this comment, the author provides the basics of the statistical interpretation of OE and gives suggestions for the improvement of the algorithm in the application to prompt gamma imaging as described in Polf et al (2015 Phys. Med. Biol. 60 7085).
