Narrow sidebranch arrays for low frequency duct noise control

The present study investigates the sound transmission loss across a section of an infinitely long duct where one or more narrow sidebranch tubes are installed flushed with the duct wall. The finite-element method is used to compute the wave propagation characteristics, and a simplified theoretical analysis is carried out at the same time to explain the wave mechanism at frequencies of high sound reduction. Results show that the high sound transmission loss at a particular frequency is due to the concerted actions of three consecutive sidebranch tubes with the most upstream one in the resonant state. The expansion chamber effect of the setup also plays a role in enhancing sound attenuation at non-resonance frequencies. Broadband performance of the device can be greatly enhanced by appropriate arrangements of tube lengths and/or by coupling arrays on the two sides of the duct.

Transmission characteristics of a tee-junction in a rectangular duct at higher-order modes

Numerical and experimental studies were undertaken to characterize the noise transmission and scattering properties in higher-order modes across the tee-junction of a rectangular duct used in ventilation and air-conditioning systems. To measure these properties, a formulation of a transmission matrix based on the transfer function and a two-microphone method was devised. The measurement of modal sound transmission and scattering coefficients is demonstrated for a duct element in a rectangular duct. The results of numerical simulations were verified by experiments. The results show that sound transmissions of fundamental mode and higher-order modes across the main duct are high at the eigen-frequencies of the main duct and sidebranch. Weak modal coupling of the branch-modes and the traveling wave in the main duct is observed at or very close to the eigen-frequencies of the sidebranch, which shifts excitation of the higher-order branch-modes at higher frequencies. A decrease in sound transmission and increase in sound scattering into higher-order modes occur with excitation of the axial branch-mode. Excitation of the longitudinal branch-mode due to branch-end reflection also results in lower sound transmission of higher-order modes across the junction along the main duct.

On sound propagation from a slanted side branch into an infinitely long rectangular duct

The transmission of sound from a slanted side branch into an infinitely long rectangular duct is studied numerically using the method of finite element with absorptive domain exit boundaries. The sound transmission coefficients associated with various acoustic modes are investigated in details. The results show that the plane wave assumption is only valid at very low frequency. It is also found that the intensities of the higher modes are stronger than that of the plane wave once they are excited. Besides, a critical side-branch slant angle is found over which a significant change of sound propagation mode takes place. This affects substantially the energy distribution between various acoustic modes inside the main duct. A simplified model is proposed to explain the phenomenon and the relationship of this critical angle with the width ratio between the side branch and the main duct is established.

Sound transmission across duct constrictions with and without tapered sections

The sound power transmission loss across duct constrictions with linearly tapered sections is studied with the finite element method. Results show that the acoustic energy distributions of transmitted waves at high frequency depend critically on the exit configuration of the constriction. The corresponding strengths of these waves are very much affected by the entrance setup of the constriction. The difference between inlet and outlet impedance of a constriction leads to weaker resonant sound transmission.
