Occupational Health Challenges for Aviation Workers Amid the Changing Climate: A Narrative Review

Although there are many forecasts regarding the impact of climate change on the aviation sector, a critical but frequently neglected dimension is the occupational safety risks faced by aviation professionals. This narrative review explores the potential impacts of the changing climate on the health and safety of aviation personnel. Furthermore, we examine the significance of resilience in helping these workers adapt and effectively manage climate-related challenges in their professional lives. Climate change poses increasing threats to the well-being of flight personnel through elevated temperatures, heightened ultraviolet radiation exposure, increased mental workload from extreme weather events, and other psychological stressors. Building resilience through workforce training, planning, and adaptation can reduce vulnerability. In future research, the iterative process of selecting measurement components to gauge the impact of climate change should balance feasibility, relevance for stakeholders, and accurately capturing exposure effects. For instance, while salivary cortisol measures stress biologically, assessments of depression or burnout may provide more nuanced insights on pilot health for industry decision-makers managing climate impacts. In conclusion, a strategic emphasis on enhancing the physical and psychological well-being of the aviation workforce is imperative for facilitating a more efficient adaptation within the sector. This is of paramount importance, considering the critical function that aviation serves in fostering human connectivity. Consequently, it is essential for regulatory bodies and policymakers to prioritize the safeguarding of employee health in the face of climate change challenges.

Recent Advances in Passive Acoustic Localization Methods via Aircraft and Wake Vortex Aeroacoustics

Passive acoustic aircraft and wake localization methods rely on the noise emission from aircraft and their wakes for detection, tracking, and characterization. This paper takes a holistic approach to passive acoustic methods and first presents a systematic bibliographic review of aeroacoustic noise of aircraft and drones, followed by a summary of sound generation of wing tip vortices. The propagation of the sound through the atmosphere is then summarized. Passive acoustic localization techniques utilize an array of microphones along with the known character of the aeroacoustic noise source to determine the characteristics of the aircraft or its wake. This paper summarizes the current state of knowledge of acoustic localization with an emphasis on beamforming and machine learning techniques. This review brings together the fields of aeroacoustics and acoustic-based detection the advance the passive acoustic localization techniques in aerospace.

Measurement and characterization of infrasound from a tornado producing storm

A hail-producing supercell on 11 May 2017 produced a small tornado near Perkins, Oklahoma (35.97, -97.04) at 2013 UTC. Two infrasound microphones with a 59-m separation and a regional Doppler radar station were located 18.7 and 70 km from the tornado, respectively. Elevated infrasound levels were observed starting 7 min before the verified tornado. Infrasound data below ∼5 Hz was contaminated with wind noise, but in the 5-50 Hz band the infrasound was independent of wind speed with a bearing angle that was consistent with the movement of the storm core that produced the tornado. During the tornado, a 75 dB peak formed at ∼8.3 Hz, which was 18 dB above pre-tornado levels. This fundamental frequency had overtones (18, 29, 36, and 44 Hz) that were linearly related to mode number. Analysis of a larger period of time associated with two infrasound bursts (the tornado occurred during the first event) shows that the spectral peaks from the tornado were present from 4 min before to 40 min after tornadogenesis. This suggests that the same geophysical process(es) was active during this entire window.

Aeroacoustic model of a modulation fan with pitching blades as a sound generator

This paper is to develop an aeroacoustic model for a type of modulation fan termed as rotary subwoofer that is capable of radiating low-frequency sound at high sound pressure levels. The rotary subwoofer is modeled as a baffled monopole whose source strength is specified by the fluctuating mass flow rate produced by the pitching blades that rotate at constant speed. An immersed boundary method is established to simulate the detailed unsteady flow around the blades and also to estimate the source strength for the prediction of the far-field sound pressure level (SPL). The numerical simulation shows that the rotary subwoofer can output oscillating air flow that is in phase with the pitching motion of the blades. It is found that flow separation is more likely to occur on the pitching blades at higher modulation frequency, resulting in the reduction of the radiated SPL. Increasing the maximum blade excursion is one of the most effective means to enhance the sound radiation, but this effect can also be compromised by the flow separation. As the modulation frequency increases, correspondingly increasing the rotational speed or using larger blade solidity is beneficial to suppressing the flow separation and thus improving the acoustic performance of the rotary subwoofer.
