The effect of resonance on transient microbubble acoustic response: Experimental observations and numerical simulations

Quantitative estimation of phospholipid molecules desorbed from a microbubble surface under ultrasound irradiation

Microbubbles have potential applications as drug and gene carriers, and drug release can be triggered by externally applied ultrasound irradiation while inside blood vessels. Desorption of molecules forming the microbubble shell can be observed under ultrasound irradiation of a single isolated microbubble, and the volume of desorbed molecules can be quantitatively estimated from the contact angle between the bubble and a glass plate. Microbubbles composed of a 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) shell and a poorly-soluble gas are created. When the microbubbles are exposed to a pulsed ultrasound, the contact angles increase dramatically; the percentage of DMPC molecules desorbed from the bubble surface reaches 70%. Vibration of a single bubble in the radial direction is measured using a laser Doppler vibrometer. The relationship between the vibrational characteristics and the amount of molecular desorption reveals that a larger vibrational amplitude of the bubble around the resonance size induces a larger amount of molecular desorption. These results support the possibility of controlling molecular desorption with pulsed ultrasound.

Dynamics of bubbles under stochastic pressure forcing

Several studies have investigated the dynamics of a single spherical bubble at rest under a nonstationary pressure forcing. However, attention has almost always been focused on periodic pressure oscillations, neglecting the case of stochastic forcing. This fact is quite surprising, as random pressure fluctuations are widespread in many applications involving bubbles (e.g., hydrodynamic cavitation in turbulent flows or bubble dynamics in acoustic cavitation), and noise, in general, is known to induce a variety of counterintuitive phenomena in nonlinear dynamical systems such as bubble oscillators. To shed light on this unexplored topic, here we study bubble dynamics as described by the Keller-Miksis equation, under a pressure forcing described by a Gaussian colored noise modeled as an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Results indicate that, depending on noise intensity, bubbles display two peculiar behaviors: when intensity is low, the fluctuating pressure forcing mainly excites the free oscillations of the bubble, and the bubble's radius undergoes small amplitude oscillations with a rather regular periodicity. Differently, high noise intensity induces chaotic bubble dynamics, whereby nonlinear effects are exacerbated and the bubble behaves as an amplifier of the external random forcing.

Modeling atomic force microscopy and shell mechanical properties estimation of coated microbubbles

We present an extensive comparison with experimental data of our theoretical/numerical model for the static response of coated microbubbles (MBs) subject to compression from an atomic force microscope (afm). The mechanics of the MB's coating is described in the context of elastic thin shell theory. The encapsulated fluid is treated as compressible/incompressible pertaining to a gas/liquid, while the thinning of the liquid film between the MB and the afm cantilever is modeled via introduction of an interaction potential and the resulting disjoining pressure. As the external force increases, the experimental force-deformation (f-d) curves of MBs covered with polymer have an initial linear response (Reissner regime), followed by a non-linear curved downwards response (Pogorelov regime) where buckling takes place. On the other hand, the f-d curve for MBs covered with lipid monolayers initially follows the Reissner regime, but buckling is bypassed to a curved upwards regime where internal gas pressure dominates. The elastic properties, namely Young's modulus and shell thickness, for MB's covered with polymer can be estimated by combining the buckling point and the slope of the Reissner regime or the slopes of Reissner and Pogorelov regimes. Comparison of the present model with afm f-d curves for polymer shows satisfactory agreement. The area dilatation and bending moduli are shown to be the appropriate independent elastic parameters of MBs covered with phospholipid monolayers and are estimated by combination of the transition from Reissner to pressure dominated regime. Simulations and experiments in this case are in excellent agreement.
