Physical Function and Health-Related Quality of Life in Overweight and Obese Rural Women Who Meet Physical Activity Recommendations

Physical activity, ethnicity, and quality of life among breast cancer survivors and population-based controls: the long-term quality of life follow-up study

PURPOSE

To explore the relationship between physical activity (PA) and quality of life (QOL) among Hispanic and non-Hispanic white breast cancer (BC) cases and population-based controls from the New Mexico 'Long-Term Quality of Life Study'.

METHODS

Self-reported PA (low, moderate, vigorous MET hours/week) at baseline and follow-up interviews (12-15 years) were available for 391 cases and controls and modeled using multiple linear regressions with SF-36 mean composite scores for physical and mental health. The change in PA from baseline to follow-up and interactions with ethnicity were also examined. Models were adjusted for age at diagnosis/baseline interview, education, comorbidities, body mass index, and change in PA.

RESULTS

PA intensities at each timepoint did not differ by case/control status; however, the change in vigorous PA was lower among cases (p = 0.03). At follow-up, low intensity PA increased mental health QOL scores among cases; however, the interaction between low intensity PA and ethnicity was statistically significant among controls indicating decreased mental health among Hispanics (p = 0.02). Change in moderate PA was associated with increased physical and mental health among cases (physical: β = 0.186, p = 0.008; mental: β = 0.225, p = 0.001) and controls (physical: β = 0.220, p < 0.0001; mental: β = 0.193, p = 0.002), when controlling for confounders.

CONCLUSION

Our results demonstrate that all levels of PA are important for mental health among BC cases, while activities of higher intensity are important for physical health among women overall. The statistical interaction observed between ethnicity and low intensity PA among controls for mental health warrants further research to provide a meaningful interpretation.

Weight loss is associated with improved quality of life among rural women completers of a web-based lifestyle intervention

INTRODUCTION

The evidence for whether weight loss following longer-term lifestyle interventions results in improved health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is inconclusive. This study examines whether women who lose weight after completing an 18-month web-based lifestyle modification intervention would report a corresponding improvement in HRQoL as measured using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System 29-item profile (PROMIS-29 v1.0).

METHODS

Data from 216 rural women, ages 40 to 69, with baseline and 18-month PROMIS-29 data were analyzed in this secondary analysis of the Women Weigh-in for Wellness clinical trial. This trial promoted lifestyle modification for initial weight loss (baseline to 6 months) and guided weight loss (6 months to 18 months) using a web-delivery format.

RESULTS

After adjusting for age, number of comorbidities, change in physical activity from baseline, intervention group, and baseline PROMIS-29 scores, change in weight was associated with improved health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the domains of depression, physical function, pain interference, fatigue, and satisfaction with social role. Logistic regressions, adjusting for the same factors, indicated women with ≥ 10% weight loss were more likely to report lower depression, higher physical function and less pain interference, compared to women who gained weight or lost < 5%.

CONCLUSIONS

Among our rural women, a loss in weight from baseline appeared to be associated with overall improvement in multiple PROMIS-29 v 1.0 domains, noting the likelihood of achieving improvement was significantly higher among women who attained ≥ 10% weight loss. These findings may positively influence a woman's adherence to lifestyle modification weight loss and weight maintenance program.

An ordinal logistic regression approach to predict the variability on biofilm formation stages by five Salmonella enterica strains on polypropylene and glass surfaces as affected by pH, temperature and NaCl

This study assessed the adhesion and formation of biofilm by five Salmonella enterica strains (S. Enteritidis 132, S. Infantis 176, S. Typhimurium 177, S. Heidelberg 281 and S. Corvallis 297) on polypropylene (PP) and glass (G) surfaces as affected by pH (4-7), NaCl concentration (0-10% w/v) and temperature (8-35 °C). Sessile counts <3 log CFU/cm² were considered lack of adhesion (category 1), while counts ≥ 3 and < 5 log CFU/cm² corresponded to adhesion (category 2) and counts ≥ 5 log CFU/cm² corresponded biofilm formation (category 3). The obtained results categorized in these three responses were used to develop ordinal regression models to predict the probability of biofilm stages on PP- and G-surfaces. The experimental outcomes for lack of adhesion were >90% on PP- and G-surfaces. Generally, adhesion outcomes corresponded to approximately 36% of the total, whereas biofilm outcomes were close to 65% in both PP- and G-surfaces. The biofilm stages varied among the strains studied and with the material surface under the same experimental conditions. According to the generated ordinal models, the probability of adhesion and biofilm formation on PP-surface by the five S. enterica strains tested decreased at pH 4 or 5 in NaCl concentrations >4% and at a temperature <20 °C. On G-surface, the probability of adhesion increased pH 6 or 7, in the absence of NaCl and temperatures <20 °C, while, the probability of biofilm formation increased in the same pH, NaCl concentration up to 4% and temperatures ≥20 °C. This is the first study assessing the biofilm formation through categorical, ordinal responses and it shows that ordinal regression models can be useful to predict biofilm stages of S. enterica as a function of pH, NaCl, and temperature or their interactions.

Health and appearance reasons for weight loss as predictors of long-term weight change

This study investigated whether women’s initial reasons (health, appearance to others, or appearance to self) for wanting to lose weight influenced their weight change over a 30-month web-based intervention. Multilevel modeling with 1416 observations revealed that only appearance in relation to one’s self was a significant (negative) predictor. Women highly motivated to lose weight to improve their appearance in relation to themselves gained weight at 30 months, whereas those not motivated for this reason achieved clinically significant weight loss. Results suggest examining participants’ initial reasons for weight loss as an important component of intervention failure or success.
