Effect of different ankle braces on lower extremity kinematics and kinetics following special-induced fatigue for volleyball players with functional ankle instability

Background

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of different ankle braces on functional ankle instability (FAI) participants following special-induced fatigue, which will provide advice for preventing ankle sprains in volleyball game.

Methods

A total of 18 male collegiate volleyball players with FAI were recruited. The kinematics and kinetics data were acquired from the participants during single-leg drop landing using the infrared motion capture system (Mars2H, Nokov, China) and the force platform (Bertec, USA). A 2 × 2 within subjects design ANOVA was adopted to analyze the data.

Results

Whether fatigue or not, soft and semi-rigid brace reduced the ankle inversion (P = 0.025). Moreover, soft brace reduced the sagittal range of motion (ROM) of the ankle joint before fatigue (P = 0.05). In addition, the semi-rigid brace shortened the time to stability in the medial and lateral directions (P = 0.039) as well as the vertical directions (P < 0.001). The semi-rigid brace reduced the ground reaction force post-fatigue (P = 0.001).

Conclusion

Soft ankle brace reduced the sagittal range of motion pre-fatigue. Since volleyball requires athletes to jumping and landing repeatedly, and the ankle sagittal ROM was an important cushion during landings. Thus, soft ankle brace might result in overuse injury for lower extremity. However, the semi-rigid ankle brace increased the dynamic stability in the medial and vertical directions, and reduced the ankle inversion angle and forward ground reaction force post-fatigue. This ensured that the volleyball player's ankle was in a neutral position during landing, reducing the risk of excessive inversion caused by contact with the opposing player during spike and block.

Effects of Attrition Shoes on Balance Control Ability and Postural Stability Following a Single-Leg Drop Jump Landing

The purpose of the study is to determine the influence of lateral-heel-worn shoes (LHWS) on balance control ability through the single-leg drop jump test. The results could be beneficial by preventing lower limb injuries. Eighteen healthy participants performed the single-leg drop jump test. Times to stabilization for ground reaction forces (TTSG) in the anterior/posterior, medial/lateral, and vertical directions were calculated to quantify dynamic balance control ability. Outcome variables of the center of pressure (COP) were used to examine the main effect of LHWS during the static phase. The postural control ability was assessed through time to stabilization for the center of mass (TTSC) in the three directions. TTSG and TTSC for the LHWS group were found to be longer than those for the new shoes (NS) group in the M/L direction (p < 0.05). An increase in the TTS revealed an increased risk of falls during physical activities. However, no significant effects for both TTSG and TTSC were found in the other two directions between LHWS and NS groups. A static phase was cropped using TTSG for each trial, which indicated a phase after participants obtained balance. Outcome measures derived from COP showed no significant effects in the static phase. In conclusion, LHWS weakened balance control ability and postural stability in the M/L direction when compared to the NS group. During the static phase, no significant differences were found between the LHWS group and the NS group in balance control ability and postural stability. Consequently, lateral-worn shoes might increase the risk of fall injuries. The results could serve as an evaluation of shoe degradation for individuals with the aim of avoiding the risk of falls.

Progression of Fatigue Modifies Primary Contributors to Ground Reaction Forces During Drop Landing

Few studies have focused on the effect of fatigue severity on landing strategy. This study aimed to investigate the effect of fatigue progression on ground reaction force during landing. Eighteen participants performed a fatigue exercise protocol. Then participants performed drop landings at three levels of fatigue: no fatigue, medium fatigue, and severe fatigue. Multiple linear regression was conducted to identify the predictors of the peak vertical ground reaction force at each level of fatigue. Two-way ANOVAs were conducted to test the effect of fatigue on the vertical ground reaction force and the predictors. For the vertical ground reaction force, the knee joint stiffness and the knee angle at initial contact were the main predictors at no fatigue. The peak knee flexion angle and knee power were the main predictors at medium fatigue. However, the peak ankle plantarflexion moments became the main predictor at severe fatigue. The vertical ground reaction force decreased from no to medium fatigue (p = 0.001), and then increased from medium to severe fatigue (p = 0.034). The knee joint stiffness decreased from no to medium fatigue (p = 0.049), and then remained unchanged from medium to severe fatigue. The peak knee flexion angle increased from no to medium fatigue (p = 0.001), and then slightly decreased from medium to severe fatigue (p = 0.051). The results indicate that fatigue progression causes a transition from stiff to soft landing, and then to stiff landing. Participants used ankle joints more to control the landing intensity at severe fatigue.

Muscle Fatigue in the Three Heads of Triceps Brachii During Intensity and Speed Variations of Triceps Push-Down Exercise

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of changes in exercise intensity and speed on the three heads of the triceps brachii (TB) during triceps push-down exercise until task failure. Twenty-five subjects performed triceps push-down exercise at three different intensities (30, 45, and 60% 1RM) and speeds (slow, medium, and fast) until failure, and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals were recorded from the lateral, long and medial heads of the TB. The endurance time (ET), number of repetitions (NR) and rate of fatigue (ROF) were analyzed. Subsequently, the root-mean-square (RMS), mean power frequency (MPF) and median frequency (MDF) under no-fatigue (NF) and fatigue (Fa) conditions were statistically compared. The findings reveal that ROF increases with increase in the intensity and speed, and the opposite were obtained for the ET. The ROF in the three heads were comparable for all intensities and speeds. The ROF showed a significant difference (P < 0.05) among the three intensities and speeds for all heads. The three heads showed significantly different (P < 0.05) MPF and MDF values for all the performed exercises under both conditions, whereas the RMS values were significantly different only under Fa conditions. The current observations suggest that exercise intensity and speed affect the ROF while changes in intensity do not affect the MPF and MDF under Fa conditions. The behavior of the spectral parameters indicate that the three heads do not work in unison under any of the conditions. Changes in the speed of triceps push-down exercise affects the lateral and long heads, but changes in the exercise intensity affected the attributes of all heads to a greater extent.

A prospective study on peptide mapping of human fatigue saliva markers based on magnetic beads

In order to explore convenient and stable fatigue markers, we studied various high-molecular-weight peptide fragments under fatigue state and non-fatigue state in the saliva using time of flight mass spectrometry. The saliva samples were collected from 10 healthy volunteers that were in the condition of fatigue and non-fatigue, respectively. Moreover, the time of flight mass spectrometry was conducted using two kinds of sample treatment methods, the magnetic beads enrichment (MB) and direct detection of stock solution. This was followed by modeling via the mass spectra of MB and supernatant (stock solution) directly collected after centrifugation. Both MB and direct sampling produced good spectrograms between 1,000 and 15,000 Da, while some peaks were lost in the enrichment. The spectrograms in the early and late period were different in each individual. Due to the limited sample size, 20 early and 20 late spectrograms were used for modeling analysis. Three different peptides were identified in the stock solution samples that can be detected in both fatigue and non-fatigue groups. The cross validity of MB model was 92.06%, while that of the stock solution model was 95.49%. The results showed that there were different peaks within the molecular weight of 2,000-15,000 Da, which provided a scientific basis for further realization of the convenient fatigue detection method based on the biosensor technique, with important theoretical and practical significance.
