Seismic low-velocity equatorial torus in the Earth's outer core: Evidence from the late-coda correlation wavefield

Thermochemical inhomogeneities in the Earth's outer core that enhance our understanding of the geodynamo have been elusive. Seismic constraints on such inhomogeneities would provide clues on the amount and distribution of light elements in the core apart from iron and nickel. Here, we present evidence for a low-velocity volume within the outer core via the global coda correlation wavefield. Several key correlogram features with a unique sensitivity to the liquid core show variations with wave paths remarkably slower in the equatorial than polar planes. We constrain a torus structure at low latitudes with ~2% lower velocity than the surrounding liquid outer core via waveform modeling. We propose a thermochemical origin for such a low-velocity torus, providing important constraints on the dynamical processes of the Earth's outer core.

An estimate of absolute shear-wave speed in the Earth's inner core

Observations of seismic body waves that traverse the Earth's inner core (IC) as shear (J) waves are critical for understanding the IC shear properties, advancing our knowledge of the Earth's internal structure and evolution. Here, we present several seismological observations of J phases detected in the earthquake late-coda correlation wavefield at periods of 15-50 s, notably via the correlation feature I-J, found to be independent of the Earth reference velocity model. Because I-J is unaffected by compressional wave speeds of the Earth's inner core, outer core, and mantle, it represents an autonomous class of seismological measurements to benchmark the inner core properties. We estimate the absolute shear-wave speed in the IC to be 3.39 ± 0.02 km/s near the top and 3.54 ± 0.02 km/s in the center, lower than recently reported values. This is a 3.4 ± 0.5% reduction from the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM), suggesting a less rigid IC than previously estimated from the normal mode data. Such a low shear-wave speed requires re-evaluating IC composition, including the abundance of light elements, the atomic properties and stable crystallographic phase of iron, and the IC solidification process.

Seismic detection of a deep mantle discontinuity within Mars by InSight

The depth and sharpness of a midmantle seismic discontinuity, associated with the phase transition from mineral olivine to its higher-pressure polymorphs, provide essential clues to understanding the temperature and composition of Martian mantle. Using data from NASA’s InSight mission, we examined five marsquakes located 3,400 to 4,400 km away from the InSight lander and observed triplications of the P and S waves that resulted from the interaction with a seismic discontinuity produced by the postolivine transition. Our observations indicate that the Martian mantle is more iron rich than Earth,and both planets have a similar potential temperature. Our geodynamic modeling further constrains the mantle composition and surface heat flow and indicates that the mantle was cold in the early Noachian.

Constraining the thermal and compositional state of the mantle is crucial for deciphering the formation and evolution of Mars. Mineral physics predicts that Mars’ deep mantle is demarcated by a seismic discontinuity arising from the pressure-induced phase transformation of the mineral olivine to its higher-pressure polymorphs, making the depth of this boundary sensitive to both mantle temperature and composition. Here, we report on the seismic detection of a midmantle discontinuity using the data collected by NASA’s InSight Mission to Mars that matches the expected depth and sharpness of the postolivine transition. In five teleseismic events, we observed triplicated P and S waves and constrained the depth of this discontinuity to be 1,006 ± 40 km by modeling the triplicated waveforms. From this depth range, we infer a mantle potential temperature of 1,605 ± 100 K, a result consistent with a crust that is 10 to 15 times more enriched in heat-producing elements than the underlying mantle. Our waveform fits to the data indicate a broad gradient across the boundary, implying that the Martian mantle is more enriched in iron compared to Earth. Through modeling of thermochemical evolution of Mars, we observe that only two out of the five proposed composition models are compatible with the observed boundary depth. Our geodynamic simulations suggest that the Martian mantle was relatively cold 4.5 Gyr ago (1,720 to 1,860 K) and are consistent with a present-day surface heat flow of 21 to 24 mW/m².

Satellite magnetic data reveal interannual waves in Earth's core

SignificanceThe physics responsible for most of the interannual geomagnetic field changes, continually recorded by satellites for 20 years, is a long-standing open issue. By analyzing magnetic data, we detect Magneto-Coriolis waves in the Earth's outer core that account for a significant part of this signal. We further propose theoretical advances in the physical characterization of these waves, enabling a deeper understanding of the dynamics behind the geomagnetic signal. It should allow one to better sketch the heterogeneous magnetic field deep within the core, shedding further light on the mechanisms that sustain the geodynamo. Our interpretation does not require the presence of a stratified layer at the top of the core, with potent consequences regarding the Earth's thermal history.

Thermal conductivity of Fe-Si alloys and thermal stratification in Earth's core

Light elements in Earth's core play a key role in driving convection and influencing geodynamics, both of which are crucial to the geodynamo. However, the thermal transport properties of iron alloys at high-pressure and -temperature conditions remain uncertain. Here we investigate the transport properties of solid hexagonal close-packed and liquid Fe-Si alloys with 4.3 and 9.0 wt % Si at high pressure and temperature using laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments and first-principles molecular dynamics and dynamical mean field theory calculations. In contrast to the case of Fe, Si impurity scattering gradually dominates the total scattering in Fe-Si alloys with increasing Si concentration, leading to temperature independence of the resistivity and less electron-electron contribution to the conductivity in Fe-9Si. Our results show a thermal conductivity of ∼100 to 110 W⋅m^-1⋅K^-1 for liquid Fe-9Si near the topmost outer core. If Earth's core consists of a large amount of silicon (e.g., > 4.3 wt %) with such a high thermal conductivity, a subadiabatic heat flow across the core-mantle boundary is likely, leaving a 400- to 500-km-deep thermally stratified layer below the core-mantle boundary, and challenges proposed thermal convection in Fe-Si liquid outer core.

The microscopic origin of the anomalous isotopic properties of ice relies on the strong quantum anharmonic regime of atomic vibration

Water ice is a unique material presenting intriguing physical properties, such as negative thermal expansion and anomalous volume isotope effect (VIE). They arise from the interplay between weak hydrogen bonds and nuclear quantum fluctuations, making theoretical calculations challenging. Here, we employ the stochastic self-consistent harmonic approximation to investigate how thermal and quantum fluctuations affect the physical properties of ice XI with ab initio accuracy. Regarding the anomalous VIE, our work reveals that quantum effects on hydrogen are so strong to be in a nonlinear regime: When progressively increasing the mass of hydrogen from protium to infinity (classical limit), the volume first expands and then contracts, with a maximum slightly above the mass of tritium. We observe an anharmonic renormalization of about 10% in the bending and stretching phonon frequencies probed in IR and Raman experiments. For the first time, we report an accurate comparison of the low-energy phonon dispersion with the experimental data, possible only thanks to high-level accuracy in the electronic correlation and nuclear quantum and thermal fluctuations, paving the way for the study of thermal transport in ice from first-principles and the simulation of ice under pressure.

Evidence for Fe-Si-O liquid immiscibility at deep Earth pressures

Seismic observations suggest that the uppermost region of Earth's liquid outer core is buoyant, with slower velocities than the bulk outer core. One possible mechanism for the formation of a stably stratified layer is immiscibility in molten iron alloy systems, which has yet to be demonstrated at core pressures. We find immiscibility between liquid Fe-Si and Fe-Si-O persisting to at least 140 GPa through a combination of laser-heated diamond-anvil cell experiments and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. High-pressure immiscibility in the Fe-Si-O system may explain a stratified layer atop the outer core, complicate differentiation and evolution of the deep Earth, and affect the structure and intensity of Earth's magnetic field. Our results support silicon and oxygen as coexisting light elements in the core and suggest that [Formula: see text] does not crystallize out of molten Fe-Si-O at the core-mantle boundary.
