Synthetic phonons enable nonreciprocal coupling to arbitrary resonator networks

Controllable optical response and tunable sensing based on self interference in waveguide QED systems

We study the self interference effect of a resonator coupled with a bent waveguide at two separated ports. Such interference effects are shown to be similar for the cases of standing-wave and traveling-wave resonators, while in the system of two separated resonators indirectly coupled via a waveguide, the coupling forms and the related interference effects depend on which kind of resonators is chosen. Due to the self interference, controllable optical responses including tunable linewidth and frequency shift, and optical dark state can be achieved. Moreover, we consider a self-interference photon-magnon hybrid model and show phase-dependent Fano-like line shapes which have potential applications in frequency sensing. The photon-magnon hybridization can not only enhance the sensitivity and provide tunable working region, but also enables optical readout of the magnetic field strength in turn. The results in this paper provide a deeper insight into the self interference effect and its potential applications.

Nonreciprocal Magnetic Coupling Using Nonlinear Meta-Atoms

Breaking Lorentz reciprocity is fundamental to an array of functional radiofrequency (RF) and optical devices, such as isolators and circulators. The application of external excitation, such as magnetic fields and spatial-temporal modulation, has been employed to achieve nonreciprocal responses. Alternatively, nonlinear effects may also be employed to break reciprocity in a completely passive fashion. Herein, a coupled system comprised of linear and nonlinear meta-atoms that achieves nonreciprocity based on the coupling and frequency detuning of its constituent meta-atoms is presented. An analytical model is developed based on the coupled mode theory (CMT) in order to design and optimize the nonreciprocal meta-atoms in this coupled system. Experimental demonstration of an RF isolator is performed, and the contrast between forward and backward propagation approximates 20 dB. Importantly, the use of the CMT model developed herein enables a generalizable capacity to predict the limitations of nonlinearity-based nonreciprocity, thereby facilitating the development of novel approaches to breaking Lorentz reciprocity. The CMT model and implementation scheme presented in this work may be deployed in a wide range of applications, including integrated photonic circuits, optical metamaterials, and metasurfaces, among others.

Strong Nonreciprocity in Modulated Resonator Chains through Synthetic Electric and Magnetic Fields

We study nonreciprocity in spatiotemporally modulated 1D resonator chains from the perspective of equivalent 2D resonator arrays with a synthetic dimension and transverse synthetic electric and magnetic fields. The synthetic fields are respectively related to temporal and spatial modulation of the resonator chain, and we show that their combination can induce strong transmission nonreciprocity, i.e., complete isolation with only a weak perturbative modulation. This nonreciprocal effect is analogous to the Hall effect for charged particles. We experimentally implement chains of two and three spatiotemporally modulated resonators and measure over 58 dB of isolation contrast.
