Advanced membrane-based high-value metal recovery from wastewater

Considering the circular economy and environmental protection, sustainable recovery of high-value metals from wastewater has become a prominent concern. Unlike conventional methods featuring extensive chemicals or energy consumption, membrane separation technology plays a crucial role in facilitating the sustainable and efficient recovery of valuable metals from wastewater due to its attractive features. In this review, we first briefly summarize the sustainable supply chain and significance of sustainable recovery of aqueous high-value metals. Then, we review the most recent advances and application potential in promising state-of-the-art membrane-based technologies for recovery of high-value metals (silver, gold, rhenium, platinum, ruthenium, palladium, iridium, osmium, and rhodium) from wastewater effluents. In particular, pressure-based membranes, liquid membranes, membrane distillation, forward osmosis, electrodialysis and membrane-based hybrid technologies and their mechanism of high-value metal recovery is thoroughly discussed. Then, engineering application and economic sustainability are also discussed for membrane-based high-value metal recovery. The review finally concludes with a critical and insightful overview of the techno-economic viability and future research direction of membrane technologies for efficient high-value metal recovery from wastewater.

Spontaneous Particle Ordering, Sorting, and Assembly on Soap Films

Soap bubbles exhibit abundant fascinating phenomena throughout the entire life of evolution with different fundamental physics governing them. Nevertheless, the complicated dynamics of small objects in soap films are still unrevealed. Here, we report the first observation of spontaneous particle ordering in a complicated galaxy of soap films without any external energy. The balance of interfacial tension at two liquid-gas interfaces is theoretically predicted to govern belted wetted particles (BWPs) traveling along a specified path spontaneously. Such spontaneous particle path-finding is found to depend on the particle size and hydrophilic properties. Spontaneous particle sorting is directly realized via these discrete and distinctive paths for different particles. The deformation of the soap membrane facilitates 1D/2D particle organization along the path. This observation represents the discovery of a new spontaneous order phenomenon in soap film systems and provides a new energy-free approach for particle separation and soft colloidal crystal assembly.

From the teapot effect to tap-triggered self-wetting: a 3D self-driving sieve for whole blood filtration

Achieving passive microparticle filtration with micropore membranes is challenging due to the capillary pinning effect of the membranes. Inspired by the teapot effect that occurs when liquid (tea) is poured from a teapot spout, we proposed a tap-triggered self-wetting strategy and utilized the method with a 3D sieve to filter rare cells. First, a 3D-printed polymer tap-trigger microstructure was implemented. As a result, the 3 µm micropore membrane gating threshold (the pressure needed to open the micropores) was lowered from above 3000 to 80 Pa by the tap-trigger microstructure that facilated the liquid leakage and spreading to self-wet more membrane area in a positive feedback loop. Then, we implemented a 3D cone-shaped cell sieve with tap-trigger microstructures. Driven by gravity, the sieve performed at a high throughput above 20 mL/min (DPBS), while the micropore size and porosity were 3 µm and 14.1%, respectively. We further filtered leukocytes from whole blood samples with the proposed new 3D sieve, and the method was compared with the traditional method of leukocyte isolation by chemically removing red blood cells. The device exhibited comparable leukocyte purity but a higher platelet removal rate and lower leukocyte simulation level, facilitating downstream single-cell analysis. The key results indicated that the tap-triggered self-wetting strategy could significantly improve the performance of passive microparticle filtration.

Particle Separation from Liquid Marbles by the Viscous Folding of Liquid Films

Particle separation from fluid interfaces is one of the major challenges due to the large capillary energy associated with particle adsorption. Previous approaches rely on physicochemical modification or tuning the electrostatic action. Here, we show experimentally that particle separation can be achieved by fast dynamics of drop impact on soap films. When a droplet wrapped with particles (liquid marble) collides with a soap film, it undergoes bouncing and coalescence, stripping and viscous separation, or tunneling through the film. Despite the violence of splashing events, the process robustly yields the stripping in a tunable range. This viscous separation is supported by the transfer front of dynamic contact among the film, particle crust, and drop and can be well controlled in a deterministic manner by selectable impact parameters. By extensive experiments, together with thermodynamic analysis, we disclose that the separation thresholds depend on the energy competition between the kinetic energy, the increased surface energy, and the viscous dissipation. The mechanical cracking of the particle crust arises from the complex coupling between interfacial stress and viscous forces. This study is of potential benefit in soft matter research and also permits the study of a drop with colloid and surface chemistry.

Liquid-Based Adaptive Structural Materials

Structural materials are used to provide stable mechanical architectures and transmit or support forces, and they play an important role in materials science and technology. During the long process of the exploitation of structural materials, the functionality of structural materials has gained prominence. Adaptive structures responding to external stimuli have come to the fore with significant advantages in structural materials. However, many solid adaptive structural materials still suffer from their single function and the lack of dynamic performance, such as issue around fouling and energy consumption, defects present everywhere in materials at the microscale, etc. To meet the increasing demands, more and more researchers have started turning their attention to liquid-based materials owing to their intrinsic spontaneous, dynamic, and functional properties. Liquid-based adaptive structural materials (LASMs) have been proposed and developed. Building upon both dynamic liquids and fixed solids, LASMs have been demonstrated to possess both dynamic adaptivity (from the active liquid part) and stable mechanical structure (from the fixed solid part), which are desired in many applications such as 3D printing, droplet manipulation, omniphobic surfaces, microfluidics, mass separation, etc. A unifying view of the recent progress of LASMs is presented, including liquid with particles, liquid with surfaces, as well as liquid with membranes. In addition, the discussion of the prospects and challenges are provided for promoting the development of LASMs.

Effect of gravity on the orientation and detachment of cubic particles adsorbed at soap film or liquid interfaces

We investigate the interaction that occurs between a light solid cube falling under gravity and a horizontal soap film that is pinned to a circular ring. We observe in both experiments and quasi-static simulations that the final orientation of a cube that becomes entrapped by a soap film is strongly dependent on the Bond number. A cube is rotated by a soap film into one of three main orientations in a process that is driven by energy minimisation. The likelihood of observing each of these final orientations is shown to depend on the Bond number, and the most energetically favourable orientation depends on the terminal height reached by the cube. We also find a critical value for the Bond number, above which a cube is no longer supported by a soap film and detachment occurs, to be less than one.

The confluence of available membrane materials and the explorations into fluid behaviors have revolutionized liquid-based porous membranes, which deserve more attention.

Power generation from the interaction of a liquid droplet and a liquid membrane

Triboelectric nanogenerators are an energy harvesting technology that relies on the coupling effects of contact electrification and electrostatic induction between two solids or a liquid and a solid. Here, we present a triboelectric nanogenerator that can work based on the interaction between two pure liquids. A liquid-liquid triboelectric nanogenerator is achieved by passing a liquid droplet through a freely suspended liquid membrane. We investigate two kinds of liquid membranes: a grounded membrane and a pre-charged membrane. The falling of a droplet (about 40 μL) can generate a peak power of 137.4 nW by passing through a pre-charged membrane. Moreover, this membrane electrode can also remove and collect electrostatic charges from solid objects, indicating a permeable sensor or charge filter for electronic applications. The liquid-liquid triboelectric nanogenerator can harvest mechanical energy without changing the object motion and it can work for many targets, including raindrops, irrigation currents, microfluidics, and tiny particles.

Bioinspired Self-Healing Liquid Films for Ultradurable Electronics

Resistive strain sensors play a crucial role in the development of flexible and stretchable electronics because of their excellent sensitivity and conformability. However, such sensors suffer from poor durability because of the low adhesion strength between the solid conductive layer and polymer and the irreparable dry friction inside the conventional solid conductive layers. Here, inspired from the structures and excellent abrasion resistance of tear films on animal corneas, we demonstrate ultradurable strain sensors based on uniform self-healing wear-free liquid films formed on biomimetic microvilli made from modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Ethanol solutions containing ionic liquids (ILs) are added to PDMS microvilli, which are superlyophilic due to the surface chemistry and special structures. During evaporation, ILs are driven upward by Laplace pressure and join into continuous conductive films. As the sensing layer, when repeatedly stretched and released, the capillary-stabilized liquid film is lossless because of wet friction, and the cracks will recover completely after release due to the capillary-force-induced self-healing capability, allowing the strain sensors to exhibit high durability of over 22 500 loading-unloading cycles. This work presents an approach for the construction of ultradurable electronics.
