Stress guides in generic static mechanical metamaterials

The confinement of waves within a waveguide can enable directional transmission of signals, which has found wide applications in communication, imaging, and signal isolation. Extending this concept to static systems, where material deformation is piled up along a spatial trajectory, remains elusive due to the sensitivity of localized deformation to structural defects and impurities. Here, we propose a general framework to characterize localized static deformation responses in two-dimensional generic static mechanical metamaterials, by exploiting the duality between space in static systems and time in one-dimensional non-reciprocal wave systems. An internal time-reverse symmetry is developed by the space-time duality. Upon breaking this symmetry, quasi-static load-induced deformation can be guided to travel along a designated path, thereby realizing a stress guide. A combination of time-reverse and inversion symmetries discloses the parity-time symmetry inherent in static systems, which can be leveraged to achieve directional deformation shielding. The tailorable stress guides can find applications in various scenarios, ranging from stress shielding and energy harvesting in structural tasks to information processing in mechanical computing devices.

Localized and delocalized topological modes of heat

The topological physics has sparked intensive investigations into topological lattices in photonic, acoustic, and mechanical systems, powering counterintuitive effects otherwise inaccessible with usual settings. Following the success of these endeavors in classical wave dynamics, there has been a growing interest in establishing their topological counterparts in diffusion. Here, we propose an additional real-space dimension in diffusion, and the system eigenvalues are transformed from "imaginary" to "real." By judiciously tailoring the effective Hamiltonian with coupling networks, localized and delocalized topological modes are realized in heat transfer. Simulations and experiments in active thermal lattices validate the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical strategy. This approach can be applied to establish various topological lattices in diffusion systems, offering insights into engineering topologically protected edge states in dynamic diffusive scenarios.

Space-time symmetry and nonreciprocal parametric resonance in mechanical systems

Linear mechanical systems with time-modulated parameters can harbor oscillations with amplitudes that grow or decay exponentially with time due to the phenomenon of parametric resonance. While the resonance properties of individual oscillators are well understood, those of systems of coupled oscillators remain challenging to characterize. Here we determine the parametric resonance conditions for time-modulated mechanical systems by exploiting the internal symmetries arising from the real-valued and symplectic nature of classical mechanics. We also determine how these conditions are further constrained when the system exhibits external symmetries. In particular, we analyze systems with space-time symmetry where the system remains invariant after a combination of discrete translation in both space and time. For such systems, we identify a combined space-time translation operator that provides more information about the dynamics of the system than the Floquet operator does and use it to derive conditions for one-way amplification of traveling waves. Our exact theoretical framework based on symmetries enables the design of exotic responses such as nonreciprocal transport and one-way amplification in dynamic mechanical metamaterials and is generalizable to all physical systems that obey space-time symmetry.

Programmable nonreciprocal Poynting effect enabled by lattice metamaterials

Shear nonreciprocity, implying unequal shear forces in opposite shear directions, can be achieved by arranging structures asymmetrically. However, the nonreciprocal Poynting effect, i.e., unequal normal stresses induced by the same shear displacements to the left and right, has not been fully explored. We discover the nonreciprocal Poynting effect using a generalized directional truss model. Inspired by this discovery, the cylindrical lattice metamaterials constructed from antisymmetric curled microstructures are used as a case study to generate the nonreciprocal Poynting effect. We develop a design framework that integrates digital generation, finite deformation theory, finite element modeling, and three-dimensional printing to program the nonreciprocal Poynting effect. Applications such as bionic Poynting effect matching, wave energy converter, and unidirectional motion limitation are demonstrated. This framework allows the one-to-one mapping between the torque and normal forces, paving the way for designing soft devices with precise force transmission capabilities.

Effective enhancement of the non-Hermitian corner skin effect in reciprocal photonic crystals

With the rich physical phenomena arising from non-Hermitian systems, the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) has become a current research hotspot. Nowadays, the corner skin effect based on non-reciprocal photonic crystals has been proposed. Considering the complexity of realizing non-reciprocity, the corner skin effect based on reciprocal photonic crystals is well worth investigating. In this Letter, a non-Hermitian reciprocal geometry-dependent corner skin effect based on two-dimensional photonic crystals is presented, which is manifested as the distribution of eigenstates on the corners of a particular geometry by applying open boundary conditions in both directions of photonic crystals. For the better application of the NHSE in the future, such as highly sensitive sensors and lasers, a new, to the best of our knowledge, method that can effectively enhance the performance of the NHSE in photonic crystals is proposed. The method introduces both gain and loss in an ideal photonic crystal to enhance the non-Hermitian specificity of the system, which improves the performance of the non-Hermitian corner skin effect of photonic crystals by 64.5%. Furthermore, this geometry-dependent corner skin effect is corroborated with the spectral topology.
