Preparation of High Vibrational States in the Entire Molecular Beam

Preparing highly excited molecules is of great interest in chemistry, but it has long been a challenge due to the high laser power required within the narrow line width to excite a weak transition. We present a cavity-enhanced infrared excitation scheme using a milliwatt laser. As a demonstration, about 35% of CO molecules in a ground-state rotational level were excited to the highly excited v = 3 state in the entire pulsed supersonic beam, as confirmed by the depletion of molecules in the ground state. The method was also applied to excite HD molecules to the v = 2 state with a continuous-wave diode laser. This work provides a universal approach to prepare molecules in a specific quantum state, paving the way to study the chemical reaction dynamics of highly excited molecules.

Frustrated charge transfer in vibrationally inelastic Ar++N2 collisions via hard collision glory scattering

Vibrational energy transfer in collisions between ions and neutrals is a fundamental process in interstellar media, planetary atmospheres, and plasmas. The conventional wisdom is that glancing collisions with large impact parameters are forward-scattered with low vibrational excitation, while hard collisions with small impact parameters are sideway- or backward-scattered with relatively high vibrational excitation. Here, we report experimental observations with a three-dimensional velocity-map imaging crossed-beam apparatus in the inelastic scattering process Ar++N2(v'' = 0, J'')→Ar++N2(v', J'), where all the vibrationally excited N2 products are dominated by forward scattering, contradicting the textbook model. Trajectory surface hopping calculations not only reproduced the experimental observation qualitatively, but also revealed that the vibrational excitation mainly occurs through a transient charge-transfer process. The hard collision glory mechanism, which has so far only been observed in inelastic rotational energy transfer between neutrals, is shown to play a major role for vibrational excitation in the inelastic Ar++N2 collision, via the frustrated charge transfer process.

Imaging Spin-Orbit Excitation of Yttrium through High-Energy Collisions with Rare Gas Atoms

The energy required for spin-orbit excitation plays a critical role in understanding translational-to-electronic energy conversion, particularly in chemical reactions involving changes in spin states. This is particularly important for transition metal atoms possessing d-orbitals, which result in multiple spin-orbit split energy levels at low energies. The accurate identification and characterization of spin-orbit transitions in such species require advanced experimental techniques and theoretical support. In this study, the spin-orbit excited collisions of Y(2D3/2) with rare gas atoms Ne, Ar, and Kr leading to Y(2D5/2) were observed using laser-ablated crossed-beam and time-sliced ion velocity mapping imaging techniques. Through a comparison of the forward angular distributions of Y(2D3/2) to the backward and sideway scattering distributions of Y(2D5/2) from elastic and inelastic collisions of Y(2D) with rare gas atoms, this study reveals that the spin-orbit electronic excitation occurs with high collision energy and low impact parameters from backward and sideway collisions. The effectiveness of the spin-orbit excitation process is strongly dependent on the collision energy or temperature, suggesting that energy requirements of the process have to be considered in chemical reactions involving changes in spin states.

Determination of collision mechanisms at low energies using four-vector correlations

In molecular dynamics, a fundamental question is how the outcome of a collision depends on the relative orientation of the collision partners before their interaction begins (the stereodynamics of the process). The preference for a particular orientation of the reactant complex is intimately related to the idea of a collision mechanism and the possibility of control, as revealed in recent experiments. Indeed, this preference holds not only for chemical reactions involving complex polyatomic molecules, but also for the simplest inelastic atom-diatom collisions at cold collision energies. In this work, we report how the outcome of rotationally inelastic collisions between two D2 molecules can be controlled by changing the alignment of their internuclear axes under the same or different polarization vectors. Our results demonstrate that a higher degree of control can be achieved when two internuclear axes are aligned, especially when both molecules are relaxed in the collision. The possibility of control extends to very low energies, even to the ultracold regime, when no control could be achieved just by the alignment of the internuclear axis of one of the colliding partners.

Accurate Quantum Dynamics Calculations for the Cl + CH4/CHD3/CD4 Reaction Rates

Full-dimensional quantum dynamics simulations of the reaction of Cl with methane and its isotopomers are reported. Thermal rate constants are computed for the Cl + CH4 → HCl + CH3, Cl + CHD3 → HCl + CD3, and Cl + CD4 → DCl + CD3 reactions. Temperatures between 200 and 500 K are considered. In this temperature range, excellent agreement with the experiment is obtained. A detailed analysis of the kinetic isotope effect reveals the crucial importance of the CH3/CD3 umbrella motion. Comparison with approximate ring-polymer molecular dynamics simulations shows significant differences depending on the isotope studied.

Vibration to Vibration: Product Energy Distribution of F + HD Crossed Molecular Beam Experiments

We investigated the F + HD(v = 1, j = 0) → HF + D reaction using the crossed molecular beam technique combined with the D atom Rydberg tagging time-of-flight spectroscopy. By detecting the products at various scattering angles for different collision energies in the range of 0.8-1.2 kcal/mol, we observed the forward-scattering products of HF(v' = 4) and determined the threshold energy for the opening of this reaction channel. Similar experiments were conducted for the F + HD(v = 0, j = 0) → HF + D reaction within the range of 1.1-1.6 kcal/mol, where forward-scattering products of HF(v' = 3) were observed, and the threshold energy for this reaction channel was determined as well. Furthermore, we measured the differential cross-sections for the F + HD → HF + D reaction in both the vibrational ground state and the excited state of HD and analyzed the vibrational quantum-state distribution of the HF products. It was found that the population of vibrational quantum states of the HF products increases synchronously with the excitation of the reactant HD vibrationally.

Quantum stereodynamics of cold molecular collisions

Advances in quantum state preparations combined with molecular cooling and trapping technologies have enabled unprecedented control of molecular collision dynamics. This progress, achieved over the last two decades, has dramatically improved our understanding of molecular phenomena in the extreme quantum regime characterized by translational temperatures well below a kelvin. In this regime, collision outcomes are dominated by isolated partial waves, quantum threshold and quantum statistics effects, tiny energy splitting at the spin and hyperfine levels, and long-range forces. Collision outcomes are influenced not only by the quantum state preparation of the initial molecular states but also by the polarization of their rotational angular momentum, i.e., stereodynamics of molecular collisions. The Stark-induced adiabatic Raman passage technique developed in the last several years has become a versatile tool to study the stereodynamics of light molecular collisions in which alignment of the molecular bond axis relative to initial collision velocity can be fully controlled. Landmark experiments reported by Zare and coworkers have motivated new theoretical developments, including formalisms to describe four-vector correlations in molecular collisions that are revealed by the experiments. In this Feature article, we provide an overview of recent theoretical developments for the description of stereodynamics of cold molecular collisions and their implications to cold controlled chemistry.

Quantum control of field-free molecular orientation

Generating field-free (non-stationary) orientation of molecules in space has been a longstanding goal in the field of quantum control of molecular rotation, which has significant applications in physical chemistry, chemical physics, strong-field physics, and quantum information science. In this Perspective, we review and examine several representative control schemes developed in recent years and implemented in theoretical and experimental areas for generating field-free orientation of molecules. By conducting numerical simulations of different control schemes on the same molecular system, we demonstrate that quantum coherent control, specifically targeting a limited number of the lowest-lying rotational levels to achieve an optimal superposition, can result in a high degree of orientation. To this end, we provide an overview of our latest developed analytical method, which enables the precise design of terahertz field parameters through resonant excitation. This design approach facilitates the attainment of desired field-free orientations by optimizing the amplitudes and phases of rotational wave functions for the selected rotational levels. Finally, we outlook the significance of such progress in multiple frontier research fields, highlighting its potential applications in ultracold physics, quantum computation, quantum simulation, and quantum metrology.

Imaging of the charge-transfer reaction of spin-orbit state-selected Ar+(2P3/2) with N2 reveals vibrational-state-specific mechanisms

Charge-transfer reactions are ubiquitous and play important roles in various gaseous environments, but, despite a long history of extensive research, our understanding of their dynamics at the quantum state-to-state level is still lacking. Here we report quantum-state-resolved experiments for the paradigmatic charge-transfer reaction Ar+ + N2 → Ar + N2+ using a three-dimensional velocity-map imaging crossed-beam apparatus with the Ar+ beam prepared exclusively in the spin-orbit state 2P3/2. High-resolution scattering images show strong dependence of rotational and angular distributions on the vibrational quantum number of the N2+ product. Trajectory surface-hopping calculations, which semi-quantitatively reproduce the experimental observations, support the existence of two distinct charge-transfer mechanisms. One of these, in the dominant N2+(v' = 1) channel, is the well-known long-distance harpooning mechanism. However, the highly rotationally excited products in the forward direction are attributed to a hard-collision glory scattering mechanism, which occurs on account of the strong attraction between the collisional partners counterbalanced by the short-range repulsive interaction.

State-to-State Dynamics in Mode-Specific Reactions of Cl + CH3D(v1-I, v1-II, and v4 = 1; |10⟩): Loss of Memory or Not

Several decades of the study of reaction dynamics culminate in the concept of mode specificity and bond selectivity in polyatomic systems. Until very recently, the main concern of those studies has been total reactivity and little attention has been paid to the mode-specific effects on the more detailed product-state and angular distributions. Conventional wisdom would anticipate that the fine detail should reveal a more pronounced mode dependency. However, a few recent studies showed that the product distributions could appear to be surprisingly insensitive to the modes of internal excitation of reagents. This counterintuitive finding led to a concept of loss of memory. Here, we present detailed experimental results in the reactions of the Cl atom with three distinct stretching-excited CH₃D(v_CH3 = 1) reagents. In conjunction with the previous reports on various aspects of this reaction, such a comprehensive set of data enables us to perform an in-depth examination of the validity of this new concept.

The topology of the reaction stereo-dynamics in chemi-ionizations

Details on the stereo-dynamic topology of chemi-ionizations highlight the role of the centrifugal barrier of colliding reactants: it acts as a selector of the orbital quantum number effective for reaction in a state-to-state treatment. Here, an accurate internally consistent formulation of the Optical interaction potentials, obtained by the combined analysis of scattering and spectroscopic experimental findings, casts light on structure, energy and angular momentum couplings of the precursor (pre-reactive) state controlling the stereo-dynamics of prototypical chemi-ionization reactions. The closest approach (turning point) of reagents, is found to control the relative weight of two different reaction mechanisms: (i) A direct mechanism stimulated by exchange chemical forces mainly acting at short separation distances and high collision energy; (ii) An indirect mechanism, caused by the combination of weak chemical and physical forces dominant at larger distances, mainly probed at low collision energy, that can be triggered by a virtual photon exchange between reagents.

Stereodynamical Control of Cold Collisions between Two Aligned D_{2} Molecules

Resonant scattering of optically state-prepared and aligned molecules in the cold regime allows the most detailed interrogation and control of bimolecular collisions. This technique has recently been applied to collisions of two aligned ortho-D_{2} molecules prepared in the j=2 rotational level of the v=2 vibrational manifold using the Stark-induced adiabatic Raman passage technique. Here, we develop the theoretical formalism for describing four-vector correlations in collisions of two aligned molecules and apply our approach to state-prepared D_{2}(v=2,j=2)+D_{2}(v=2,j=2)→D_{2}(v=2,j=2)+D_{2}(v=2,j=0) collisions, making possible the simulations of the experimental results from first principles. Key features of the experimental angular distributions are reproduced and attributed primarily to a partial wave resonance with orbital angular momentum ℓ=4.

Stereodynamical control of the H + HD → H2 + D reaction through HD reagent alignment

Prealigning nonpolar reacting molecules leads to large stereodynamical effects because of their weak steering interaction en route to the reaction barrier. However, experimental limitations in preparing aligned molecules efficiently have hindered the investigation of steric effects in bimolecular reactions involving hydrogen. Here, we report a high-resolution crossed-beam study of the reaction H + HD(v = 1, j = 2) → H₂(v', j') + D at collision energies of 0.50, 1.20, and 2.07 electron volts in which the vibrationally excited hydrogen deuteride (HD) molecules were prepared in two collision configurations, with their bond preferentially aligned parallel and perpendicular to the relative velocity of collision partners. Notable stereodynamical effects in differential cross sections were observed. Quantum dynamics calculations revealed that strong constructive interference in the perpendicular configuration plays an important role in the stereodynamical effects observed.

Crossed Molecular Beam Study of the H + HD → H2 + D Reaction at 0.60 and 1.26 eV Using the Near-Threshold Ionization Velocity Map Ion Imaging

By using the 1 + 1' near-threshold ionization velocity map ion imaging technique, state-to-state reactive differential cross sections have been measured for the H + HD → H₂ + D reaction. High-resolution images of the D products, with the rotational states of the H₂ co-products clearly resolved, were acquired at the collision energies of 0.60 and 1.26 eV, respectively. It is found that the angular distribution is predominantly backward-scattering at the collision energy of 0.60 eV. However, at 1.26 eV, where the collision energy is higher, the angular distribution becomes forward-backward-scattering. Notably, at both collision energies, the main peaks of backward-scattered products gradually shift from backward toward sideways direction as the rotational quantum number of H₂ increases. Moreover, in the forward direction, fast angular oscillations, which are induced by specific partial waves have also been observed at 1.26 eV. These features show a strong correlation between the product states and angular distributions and also indicate the unique role of partial waves in quantum reactive scattering.

Role of Low Energy Resonances in the Stereodynamics of Cold He + D2 Collisions

In recent experiments using the Stark-induced adiabatic Raman passage technique, Zhou et al. ( J. Chem. Phys. 2021, 154, 104309; Science 2021, 374, 960-964) measured the product's angular distribution for the collisions between He and aligned D₂ molecules at cold collision energies. The signatures of the angular distributions were attributed to an [Formula: see text] = 2 resonance that governs scattering at low energies. A first-principles quantum mechanical treatment of this problem is presented here using a highly accurate interaction potential for the He-H₂ system. Our results predict a very intense [Formula: see text] = 1 resonance at low energies, leading to angular distributions that differ from those measured in the experiment. A good agreement with the experiment is achieved only when the [Formula: see text] = 1 resonance is artificially removed, for example, by excluding the lowest energies present in the experimental velocity distribution. Our analysis revealed that neither the position nor the intensity of the [Formula: see text] = 1 resonance significantly changes when the interaction potential is modified within its predicted uncertainties. Energy-resolved measurements may help to resolve the discrepancy.

Benchmark Ab Initio Characterization of the Abstraction and Substitution Pathways of the Cl + CH3CN Reaction

We investigate the reaction pathways of the Cl + CH₃CN system: hydrogen abstraction, methyl substitution, hydrogen substitution, and cyanide substitution, leading to HCl + CH₂CN, ClCN/CNCl + CH₃, ClCH₂CN + H, and CH₃Cl + CN, respectively. Hydrogen abstraction is exothermic and has a low barrier, whereas the other channels are endothermic with high barriers. The latter two can proceed via a Walden inversion or front-side attack mechanism, and the front-side attack barriers are always higher. The C-side methyl substitution has a lower barrier and also a lower endothermicity than the N-side reaction. The computations utilize an accurate composite ab initio approach and the explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-F12b method. The benchmark classical and vibrationally adiabatic energies of the stationary points are determined with the most accurate CCSD(T)-F12b/aug-cc-pVQZ energies adding further contributions of the post-(T) and core correlation, scalar relativistic effects, spin–orbit coupling, and zero-point energy corrections. These contributions are found to be non-negligible to reach subchemical accuracy.

Imaging the Mode-Specificity in Cl + CH3D(v1-I, v1-II, v4 = 1; |jK⟩ = |10⟩) → CH2D(41) + HCl(v)

We report a crossed-beam imaging experiment on the title reactions at two collisional energies (E_c) of 5.3 and 10 kcal mol^-1. Both the integral cross sections relative to the ground-state reactivity and the differential cross sections were measured and compared. We found that one-quantum excitations of the CH₃-stretching vibrations of the CH₃D reagent exerted profound mode-specificity in forming the umbrella-mode-excited CH₂D(4₁) products with the vibrational efficacy of v₄ > v₁-I > v₁-II at both E_c values. The concomitantly formed HCl(v) coproducts were vibrationally cold. Interestingly, the branching ratios of (v = 1)/(v = 0) appeared invariant to the initial stretch-modes of excitation at E_c = 5.3 kcal mol^-1, yet exhibited a pronounced mode-specific dependency in the order of v₁-II > v₁-I > v₄ at E_c = 10.3 kcal mol^-1. This large and E_c-dependent disparity between the two Fermi-coupled reagents, v₁-I and v₁-II, is particularly significant and could be another facet─in addition to that in the recently reported vibrational enhancement factors─of the Fermi-phase-induced interference effect manifested in the product vibrational branching ratio. The pair-correlated angular distributions (v_CH2D, v_HCl)_s = (4₁, 0)_s in the three stretch-excited reactions were globally alike and resembled that of the ground-state reaction pair (0₀, 0)_g, suggestive of a direct abstraction mechanism of the peripheral type. This is in sharp contrast to all other vibrationally excited pairs of (1₁, 0)_s, (3₁, 0)_s, and (6₁, 0)_s previously reported in the CH₂D + HCl isotopic channel, for which both the direct abstraction and a time-delayed resonance pathway partake.

Vibrational control of the reaction pathway in the H + CHD3 → H2 + CD3 reaction

An accurate full-dimensional quantum state-to-state simulation of the six-atom title reaction based on first-principles theory is reported. Counterintuitive effects are found: Increasing the energy in the reactant's CD₃ umbrella vibration reduces the energy in the corresponding product vibration. An in-depth analysis reveals the crucial role of the effective dynamical transition state: Its geometry is controlled by the vibrational states of the reactants and subsequently controls the quantum state distribution of the products. This finding enables generalizing the concept of transition state control of chemical reactions to the quantum state-specific level.

Fermi-phase-induced interference in the reaction between Cl and vibrationally excited CH3D

Mode selectivity is a well-established concept in chemical dynamics. A polyatomic molecule possesses multiple vibrational modes and the mechanical couplings between them can result in complicated anharmonic motions that defy a simple oscillatory description. A prototypical example of this is Fermi-coupled vibration, in which an energy-split eigenstate executes coherent nuclear motion that is comprised of the constituent normal modes with distinctive phases. Will this vibrational phase affect chemical reactivity? How can this phase effect be disentangled from more classical amplitude effects? Here, to address these questions, we study the reaction of Cl with a pair of Fermi states of CH₃D(v₁-I and v₁-II). We find that the reactivity ratio of (v₁-I)/(v₁-II) in forming the CH₂D(v = 0) + HCl(v) products deviates significantly from that permitted by the conventional reactivity-borrowing framework. Based on a proposed metric, this discrepancy can only be explained when the scattering interferences mediated by the CH₃D vibrational phases are explicitly considered, which expands the concept of vibrational control of chemical reactivity into the quantum regime.

First-Principles Theory for the Reaction of Chlorine with Methane

A full-dimensional quantum dynamics simulation of the Cl + CH₄ → HCl + CH₃ reaction based on first-principles theory is reported. Accurate thermal rate constants are calculated, and perfect agreement with experiment is obtained. Despite the heavy atoms present in both reactants, the passage of the reaction barrier is found to occur within only a few tens of femtoseconds. This surprisingly short time scale results from correlated motion of the transferring hydrogen atom and the hydrogen atoms in the methyl fragment which facilitates irreversible barrier passage without relevant participation of heavy atoms. Resonance effects resulting from the heavy-light-heavy characteristics of the reaction system, which were observed in reactive scattering studies, do not affect the thermal rate constant.

Full-dimensional quantum stereodynamics of the non-adiabatic quenching of OH(A2Σ+) by H2

The Born–Oppenheimer approximation, assuming separable nuclear and electronic motion, is widely adopted for characterizing chemical reactions in a single electronic state. However, the breakdown of the Born–Oppenheimer approximation is omnipresent in chemistry, and a detailed understanding of the non-adiabatic dynamics is still incomplete. Here we investigate the non-adiabatic quenching of electronically excited OH(A²Σ⁺) molecules by H₂ molecules using full-dimensional quantum dynamics calculations for zero total nuclear angular momentum using a high-quality diabatic-potential-energy matrix. Good agreement with experimental observations is found for the OH(X²Π) ro-vibrational distribution, and the non-adiabatic dynamics are shown to be controlled by stereodynamics, namely the relative orientation of the two reactants. The uncovering of a major (in)elastic channel, neglected in a previous analysis but confirmed by a recent experiment, resolves a long-standing experiment–theory disagreement concerning the branching ratio of the two electronic quenching channels.

The breakdown of the Born–Oppenheimer approximation is omnipresent in chemistry and detailed understanding of non-adiabatic dynamics is still incomplete. Now, the non-adiabatic quenching of electronically excited OH(A²Σ⁺) molecules by H₂ has been investigated using full-dimensional quantum dynamics calculations and a high-quality diabatic-potential-energy matrix, providing insight into the branching ratio of the two electronic quenching channels.

Controlling the Spin-Orbit Branching Fraction in Molecular Collisions

The collision geometry, that is, the relative orientation of reactants before interaction, can have a large effect on how a collision or reaction proceeds. Certain geometries may prevent access to a given product channel, while others might enhance it. In this Letter, we demonstrate how the initial orientation of NO molecules relative to approaching Ar atoms determines the branching between the spin-orbit changing and the spin-orbit conserving rotational product channels. We use a recently developed quantum treatment to calculate differential and integral branching fractions, at any arbitrary orientation, from theoretical and experimental data points. Our results show that a substantial degree of control over the final spin-orbit state of the scattering products can be achieved by tuning the initial collision geometry.

Mode- and Bond-Selected Reaction of H with Local Mode Molecule HDS

Understanding mode- and bond-selected dynamics of elementary chemical reactions is of central importance in molecular reaction dynamics. The initial state-selected time-dependent wave packet method is employed to study the mode and bond selectivity, isotopic branching ratio, and temperature dependence of rate constants of the two-channel reaction of H with local mode molecule HDS. For the abstraction channel, fundamental excitation of the HS (DS) bond of the reactant HDS significantly enhances the H-abstraction (D-abstraction) reaction, whose efficacy is higher than the same amount of translational energy except at low energies just above the energy threshold. This is in sharp contrast to the prediction of Polanyi rules: translational energy is more efficient than vibrational energy in enhancing a reaction with an early barrier. The recent sudden vector projection model is then applied to rationalize the observed mode specificity, which, however, shows that the translational mode vector has a larger coupling with the reaction coordinate than the stretching vector of the active bond, implying a reversed relative efficacy on promoting the reaction as well. In contrast, the mode and bond specificity for the exchange channel is not as strong as for the abstraction channel due to the regulation of the shallow well along the reaction path.

Quantum-State Controlled Reaction Channels in Chemi-ionization Processes: Radiative (Optical-Physical) and Exchange (Oxidative-Chemical) Mechanisms

ConspectusMost chemical processes are triggered by electron or charge transfer phenomena (CT). An important class of processes involving CT are chemi-ionization reactions. Such processes are very common in nature, involving neutral species in ground or excited electronic states with sufficient energy (X*) to yield ionic products, and are considered as the primary initial step in flames. They are characterized by pronounced electronic rearrangements that take place within the collisional complex (X···M)* formed by approaching reagents, as shown by the following scheme, where M is an atomic or molecular target: X* + M → (X···M)* → [(X+···M) ↔ (X···M+)]e- → via ⁡ e - ⁡ CT (X···M)+ + e- → final ions.Despite their important role in fundamental and applied research, combustion, plasmas, and astrochemistry, a unifying description of these basic processes is still lacking. This Account describes a new general theoretical methodology that demonstrates, for the first time, that chemi-ionization reactions are prototypes of gas phase oxidation processes occurring via two different microscopic mechanisms whose relative importance varies with collision energy, Ec, and separation distance, R. These mechanisms are illustrated for simple collisions involving Ne*(3P2,0) and noble gases (Ng). In thermal and hyperthermal collisions probing interactions at intermediate and short R, the transition state [(Ne···Ng)+]e- is a molecular species described as a molecular ion core with an orbiting Rydberg electron in which the neon reagent behaves as a halogen atom (i.e., F) with high electron affinity promoting chemical oxidation. Conversely, subthermal collisions favor a different reaction mechanism: Ng chemi-ionization proceeds through another transition state [Ne*······Ng], a weakly bound diatomic-lengthened complex where Ne* reagent, behaving as a Na atom, loses its metastability and stimulates an electron ejection from M by a concerted emission-absorption of a "virtual" photon. This is a physical radiative mechanism promoting an effective photoionization. In the thermal regime of Ec, there is a competition between these two mechanisms. The proposed method overcomes previous approaches for the following reasons: (1) it is consistent with all assumptions invoked in previous theoretical descriptions dating back to 1970; (2) it provides a simple and general description able to reproduce the main experimental results from our and other laboratories during last 40 years; (3) it demonstrates that the two "exchange" and "radiative" mechanisms are simultaneously present with relative weights that change with Ec (this viewpoint highlights the fact that the "canonical" chemical oxidation process, dominant at high Ec, changes its nature in the subthermal regime to a direct photoionization process; therefore, it clarifies differences between the cold chemistry of terrestrial and interstellar environments and the energetic one of combustion and flames); (4) the proposed method explicitly accounts for the influence of the degree of valence orbital alignment on the selective role of each reaction channel as a function of Ec and also permits a description of the collision complex, a rotating adduct, in terms of different Hund's cases of angular momentum couplings that are specific for each reaction channel; (5) finally, the method can be extended to reaction mechanisms of redox, acid-base, and other important condensed phase reactions.

Probing the location of the unpaired electron in spin-orbit changing collisions of NO with Ar

Understanding the molecular forces that drive a reaction or scattering process lies at the heart of molecular dynamics. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the spin-orbit changing scattering dynamics of oriented NO molecules with Ar atoms. Using our crossed molecular beam apparatus, we have recorded velocity-map ion images and extracted differential and integral cross sections of the scattering process in the side-on geometry. We observe an overall preference for collisions close to the N atom in the spin-orbit changing manifold, which is a direct consequence of the location of the unpaired electron on the potential energy surface. In addition, a prominent forward scattered feature is observed for intermediate, even rotational transitions when the atom approaches the molecule from the O-end. The appearance of this peak originates from an attractive well on the A' potential energy surface, which efficiently directs high impact parameter trajectories towards the region of high unpaired electron density near the N-end of the molecule. The ability to orient molecules prior to collision, both experimentally and theoretically, allows us to sample different regions of the potential energy surface(s) and unveil the associated collision pathways.

Investigation of the low-energy stereodynamics in the Ne(3P2) + N2, CO reactions

We report on an experimental investigation of the low-energy stereodynamics of the energy transfer reactions Ne(³P₂) + X, producing Ne(¹S) + X⁺ and [Ne-X]⁺ (X = N₂ or CO). Collision energies in the range 0.2 K-700 K are obtained by using the merged beam technique. Two kinds of product ions are generated by Penning and associative ionization, respectively. The intermediate product [Ne-X]⁺ in vibrationally excited states can predissociate into bare ions (X⁺). The experimental ratio of the NeX⁺ and X⁺ product ion yields is similar for both molecules at high collision energies but diverge at collision energies below 100 K. This difference is explained by the first excited electronic state of the product ions, which is accessible in the case of CO but lies too high in energy in the case of N₂.

Theory Finally Agrees with Experiment for the Dynamics of the Cl + C2H6 Reaction

Since the pioneering reaction dynamics studies of H + H2 in the 1970s, theory increased the system size by one atom in every decade arriving to six-atom reactions in the early 2010s. Here, we take a significant step forward by reporting accurate dynamics simulations for the nine-atom Cl + ethane (C2H6) reaction using a new high-quality spin-orbit-ground-state ab initio potential energy surface. Quasi-classical trajectory simulations on this surface cool the rotational distribution of the HCl product molecules, thereby providing unprecedented agreement with experiment after several previous failed attempts of theory. Unlike Cl + CH4, the Cl + C2H6 reaction is exothermic with an adiabatically submerged transition state, allowing testing of the validity of the Polanyi rules for a negative-barrier reaction.

Proton transfer dynamics modified by CH-stretching excitation

Gaining insight how specific rovibrational states influence reaction kinetics and dynamics is a fundamental goal of physical chemistry. Purely statistical approaches often fail to predict the influence of a specific state on the reaction outcome, evident in a great number of both experimental and theoretical studies. Most detailed insight in atomistic reaction mechanisms is achieved using accurate collision experiments and high level dynamics calculations. For ion-molecule reactions such experiments are scarce. Here we show the influence of symmetric CH-stretching vibration on the rate and dynamics of proton transfer in the reaction of F- + CH3I. We find a pronounced shift in the reaction dynamics for excited reactions from indirect to preferred direct dynamics at higher collision energy. Moreover, excited reactions occur at larger impact parameters. Finally, we compare vibrational excitation with collision energy and find that vibration is overall more efficient in promoting reactivity, which agrees with recent theoretical calculations.

Influence of Vibrational Excitation on the Reaction of F- with CH3I: Spectator Mode Behavior, Enhancement, and Suppression

Detailed insight into chemical reaction dynamics can be obtained by probing the effect of mode-specific vibrational excitation. Suppression or enhancement of reactivity is possible as is already known from the Polanyi rules. In the reaction F- + CH3I, we found vibrational enhancement, suppression, and spectator mode dynamics in the four different reaction channels. For this system we have probed the influence of symmetric CH-stretching vibration over a collision energy range of 0.7-2.3 eV. Proton transfer is significantly enhanced, while for the nucleophilic substitution channel the spectator mode dynamics at lower collision energies unexpectedly move toward enhancement at higher collision energies. In contrast, for two halide abstraction channels, forming FI- and FHI-, we found an overall suppression, which stems mainly from a suppression of the FHI- product. We compare these results to quasiclassical trajectory calculations and with the sudden vector projection model.

Steric Effects in the Inelastic Scattering of NO(X) + Ar: Side-on Orientation

The rotationally inelastic collisions of NO(X) with Ar, in which the NO bond-axis is oriented side-on (i.e., perpendicular) to the incoming collision partner, are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The NO(X) molecules are selected in the |j = 0.5, Ω = 0.5, ε = -1, f⟩ state prior to bond-axis orientation in a static electric field. The scattered NO products are then state selectively detected using velocity-map ion imaging. The experimental bond-axis orientation resolved differential cross sections and integral steric asymmetries are compared with quantum mechanical calculations, and are shown to be in good agreement. The strength of the orientation field is shown to affect the structure observed in the differential cross sections, and to some extent also the steric preference, depending on the ratio of the initial e and f Λ-doublets in the superposition determined by the orientation field. Classical and quantum calculations are compared and used to rationalize the structures observed in the differential cross sections. It is found that these structures are due to quantum mechanical interference effects, which differ for the two possible orientations of the NO molecule due to the anisotropy of the potential energy surface probed in the side-on orientation. Side-on collisions are shown to maximize and afford a high degree of control over the scattering intensity at small scattering angles (θ < 90°), while end-on collisions are predicted to dominate in the backward scattered region (θ > 90°).

Stereodynamical control of product branching in multi-channel barrierless hydrogen abstraction of CH3OH by F

Comprehensive dynamical simulations of a prototypical multi-channel reaction on a globally accurate potential energy surface show that the non-statistical product branching is dictated by unique stereodynamics in the entrance channels.

Hydrogen abstraction from methanol (CH₃OH) by F atoms presents an ideal proving ground to investigate dynamics of multi-channel reactions, because two types of hydrogen can be abstracted from the methanol molecule leading to the HF + CH₃O and HF + CH₂OH products. Using the quasi-classical trajectory approach on a globally accurate potential energy surface based on high-level ab initio calculations, this work reports a comprehensive dynamical investigation of this multi-channel reaction, yielding measurable attributes including integral and differential cross sections, as well as branching ratios. It is shown that while complex-forming and direct mechanisms coexist at low collision energies, these barrierless reaction channels are dominated at high energies by the direct mechanism, in which the reaction is only possible for trajectories entering into the respective dynamical cones of acceptance. Perhaps more importantly, the non-statistical product branching is found to be dictated by unique stereodynamics in the entrance channels.

How reactant polarization can be used to change the effect of interference on reactive collisions

It is common knowledge that integral and differential cross sections (DCSs) are strongly dependent on the spatial distribution of the molecular axis of the reactants. Hence, by controlling the axis distribution, it is possible to either promote or hinder the yield of products into specific final states or scattering angles. This idea has been successfully implemented in experiments by polarizing the internuclear axis before the reaction takes place, either by manipulating the rotational angular distribution or by the Stark effect in the presence of an orienting field. When there is a dominant reaction mechanism, characterized by a set of impact parameters and angles of attack, it is expected that a preparation that helps the system to reach the transition state associated with that mechanism will promote the reaction, whilst a different preparation would generally impair the reaction. However, when two or more competing mechanisms via interference contribute to the reaction into specific scattering angles and final states, it is not evident which would be the effect of changing the axis preparation. To address this problem, throughout this article we have simulated the effect that different experimental preparations have on the DCSs for the H + D2 reaction at relatively high energies, for which it has been shown that several competing mechanisms give rise to interference that shapes the DCS. To this aim, we have extended the formulation of the polarization dependent DCS to calculate polarization dependent generalized deflection functions of ranks greater than zero. Our results show that interference is very sensitive to changes in the internuclear axis preparation, and that the shape of the DCS can be controlled exquisitely.

Quantum-state-controlled channel branching in cold Ne(3P2)+Ar chemi-ionization

A prerequisite to gain a complete understanding of the most basic aspects of chemical reactions is the ability to perform experiments with complete control over the reactant degrees of freedom. By controlling these, details of a reaction mechanism can be investigated and ultimately manipulated. Here, we present a study of chemi-ionization-a fundamental energy-transfer reaction-under completely controlled conditions. The collision energy of the reagents was tuned from 0.02 K to 1,000 K, with the orientation of the excited Ne atom relative to Ar fully specified by an external magnetic field. Chemi-ionization of Ne(³P₂) and Ar in these conditions enables a detailed investigation of how the reaction proceeds, and provides us with a means to control the branching ratio between the two possible reaction outcomes. The merged-beam experimental technique used here allows access to a low-energy regime in which the atoms dynamically reorient into a favourable configuration for reaction, irrespective of their initial orientations.
