Direct Observation of a Roaming Intermediate and Its Dynamics

Chemical reactions are often characterized by their transition state, which defines the critical geometry the molecule must pass through to move from reactants to products. Roaming provides an alternative picture, where in a dissociation reaction, the bond breaking is frustrated and a loosely bound intermediate is formed. Following bond breaking, the two partners are seen to roam around each other at distances of several Ångstroms, forming a loosely bound, and structurally ill-defined, intermediate that can subsequently lead to reactive or unreactive collisions. Here, we present a direct and time-resolved experimental measurement of roaming. By measuring the photoelectron spectrum of UV-excited acetaldehyde with a femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulse, we captured spectral signatures of all of the key reactive structures, including that of the roaming intermediate. This provided a direct experimental measurement of the roaming process and allowed us to identify the time scales by which the roaming intermediate is formed and removed and the electronic potential surfaces upon which roaming proceeds.

Roaming in highly excited states: The central atom elimination of triatomic molecule decomposition

Chemical reactions are generally assumed to proceed from reactants to products along the minimum energy path (MEP). However, straying from the MEP-roaming-has been recognized as an unconventional reaction mechanism and found to occur in both the ground and first excited states. Its existence in highly excited states is however not yet established. We report a dissociation channel to produce electronically excited fragments, S(1D)+O2(a1Δg), from SO2 photodissociation in highly excited states. The results revealed two dissociation pathways: One proceeds through the MEP to produce vibrationally colder O2(a1Δg) and the other yields vibrationally hotter O2(a1Δg) by means of a roaming pathway involving an intramolecular O abstraction during reorientation motion. Such roaming dynamics may well be the rule rather than the exception for molecular photodissociation through highly excited states.

Initial-site characterization of hydrogen migration following strong-field double-ionization of ethanol

An essential problem in photochemistry is understanding the coupling of electronic and nuclear dynamics in molecules, which manifests in processes such as hydrogen migration. Measurements of hydrogen migration in molecules that have more than two equivalent hydrogen sites, however, produce data that is difficult to compare with calculations because the initial hydrogen site is unknown. We demonstrate that coincidence ion-imaging measurements of a few deuterium-tagged isotopologues of ethanol can determine the contribution of each initial-site composition to hydrogen-rich fragments following strong-field double ionization. These site-specific probabilities produce benchmarks for calculations and answer outstanding questions about photofragmentation of ethanol dications; e.g., establishing that the central two hydrogen atoms are 15 times more likely to abstract the hydroxyl proton than a methyl-group proton to form H[Formula: see text] and that hydrogen scrambling, involving the exchange of hydrogen between different sites, is important in H2O+ formation. The technique extends to dynamic variables and could, in principle, be applied to larger non-cyclic hydrocarbons.

Roaming Dynamics in Hydroxymethyl Hydroperoxide Decomposition Revealed by the Full-Dimensional Potential Energy Surface of the CH2OO + H2O Reaction

The CH2OO + H2O reaction is an important atmospheric process that leads to the formation of formic acid (HCOOH) and water via the intermediate hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide (HOCH2OOH, HMHP). We investigated the intricacies of this process by employing quasiclassical trajectory calculations on an accurate, full-dimensional ab initio potential energy surface (PES). In addition to the direct mechanism via the transition state (TS), an interesting roaming mechanism was found to play the predominant role in producing H2O and HCOOH. This roaming pathway is featured as the near direct dissociation of HMHP into OH and hydroxymethoxy radical, followed by the retraction of OH and abstraction of the H atom, culminating in the formation of H2O. Due to the longer interaction time of the roaming mechanism, less product translational energy was released, but more internal energies of HCOOH were obtained, as compared with the direct TS mechanism. The enhanced yield of H2O and formic acid achieved through roaming dynamics underscores the significance of dynamics simulations based on an accurate full-dimensional PES. This work provides new insights into the dynamics of the CH2OO + H2O reaction and its implications for atmospheric chemistry.

The Influence of Hydrogen Bonds on the Roaming Reaction

Roaming bypasses the conventional transition state and is a significant reaction pathway due to the unusual energy distributions of its products; however, its reaction pathway under external environmental interactions remains unclear. Herein, we report for the first time the roaming process of nitrobenzene, which is influenced by the hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) between nitro- and phenyl radicals and water molecules in the gas phase. Notably, despite the fact that the single water structure produces a higher but narrower barrier, whereas the double water structure leads to a lower but wider barrier, the roaming reaction still occurs. The underlying mechanism responsible for these influences of H-bonds is ascribed to the dramatically changed polarization and correlation interactions between the roaming radicals. The reaction rates and thermal perturbation probabilities are also remarkably influenced due to the presence of the H-bonds, by approximately 2 orders of magnitude. It is anticipated that this work will encourage the promising feasibility of introducing environmental molecules to modulate the roaming reaction.

Oxidation of Aldehydes Used as Food Additives by Peroxynitrite

Benzaldehyde and its derivatives are used as food supplements. These substances can be used mainly as flavorings or as antioxidants. Besides, peroxynitrite, an oxidizing agent, could be formed in canned food. Both species could react between them. The present article has focused on the kinetic study of the oxidation of aldehydes by peroxynitrite. A reaction mechanism that justifies all the experimental results is proposed. This mechanism, in acidic media, passes through three competitive pathways: (a) a radical attack that produces benzoic acid. (b) peracid oxidation, and (c) a nucleophilic attack of peroxynitrous acid over aldehyde to form an intermediate, X, that produces benzoic acid, or, through a Cannizzaro-type reaction, benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol. All rate constants involved in the third pathway (c) have been calculated. These results have never been described in the literature in acid media. A pH effect was analyzed.

Ultrafast molecular dynamics in ionized 1- and 2-propanol: from simple fragmentation to complex isomerization and roaming mechanisms

Upon photoexcitation, molecules can undergo numerous complex processes, such as isomerization and roaming, leading to changes in the molecular and electronic structure. Here, we report on the time-resolved ultrafast nuclear dynamics, initiated by laser ionization, in the two structural isomers, 1- and 2-propanol, using a combination of pump-probe spectroscopy and coincident Coulomb explosion imaging. Our measurements, paired with quantum chemistry calculations, identify the mechanisms for the observed two- and three-body dissociation channels for both isomers. In particular, the fragmentation channel of 2-propanol associated with the loss of CH₃ shows possible evidence of methyl roaming. Moreover, the electronic structure of this roaming methyl fragment could be responsible for the enhanced ionization also observed for this channel. Finally, comparison with similar studies done on ethanol and acetonitrile helps establish a correlation between the length of the alkyl chain and the likelihood of hydrogen migration.

Filming ultrafast roaming-mediated isomerization of bismuth triiodide in solution

Roaming reaction, defined as a reaction yielding products via reorientational motion in the long-range region (3 - 8 Å) of the potential, is a relatively recently proposed reaction pathway and is now regarded as a universal mechanism that can explain the unimolecular dissociation and isomerization of various molecules. The structural movements of the partially dissociated fragments originating from the frustrated bond fission at the onset of roaming, however, have been explored mostly via theoretical simulations and rarely observed experimentally. Here, we report an investigation of the structural dynamics during a roaming-mediated isomerization reaction of bismuth triiodide (BiI₃) in acetonitrile solution using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray liquidography. Structural analysis of the data visualizes the atomic movements during the roaming-mediated isomerization process including the opening of the Bi-I_b-I_c angle and the closing of I_a-Bi-I_b-I_c dihedral angle, each by ~40°, as well as the shortening of the I_b···I_c distance, following the frustrated bond fission.

Time-Resolved Pair-Correlated Imaging of the Photodissociation of Acetaldehyde at 267 nm: Pathway Partitioning

Photodissociation of acetaldehyde (CH₃CHO) by UV excitation involves interwoven multiple reaction pathways, including nonradiative decay, isomerization, transition-state pathway, roaming, and other dissociation mechanisms. Recently, we employed picosecond time-resolved, pair-correlated product imaging in a study of acetaldehyde photodissociation at 267 nm to disentangle those competing mechanisms and to elucidate the possible roaming pathways (Yang, C. H.; Chem. Sci. 2020, 11, 6423-6430). Here, we complement the pair-correlated product speed distribution of CO(v = 0) at the high-j side of the CO rotational state distribution in the CO + CH₄ channel and detail the two-dimensional data analysis of the time-resolved images. As a result, extensive comparisons with other studies can be made and the branching fractions of the previously assigned TS_cc(S₀), non-TS_cc(S₀), and CI(S₁/S₀) pathways for the CO(v = 0) + CH₄ molecular channel are evaluated to be 0.74 ± 0.08, 0.15 ± 0.02, and 0.11 ± 0.02, respectively. Together with the macroscopic branching ratio between the molecular (CO + CH₄) and radical (CH₃ + HCO) channels at 267 nm from the literature, a global view of the microscopic pathways can then be delineated, which provides invaluable insights and should pave the way for further studies of this interesting system.

Double-Roaming Dynamics in the H + C2H2 → H2 + C2H Reaction: Acetylene-Facilitated Roaming and Vinylidene-Facilitated Roaming

We report two novel roaming pathways for the H + C₂H₂ → H₂ + C₂H reaction by performing extensive quasiclassical trajectory calculations on a new, global, high-level machine learning-based potential energy surface. One corresponds to the acetylene-facilitated roaming pathway, where the H atom turns back from the acetylene + H channel and abstracts another H atom from acetylene. The other is the vinylidene-facilitated roaming, where the H atom turns back from the vinylidene + H channel and abstracts another H from vinylidene. The "double-roaming" pathways account for roughly 95% of the total cross section of the H₂ + C₂H products at the collision energy of 70 kcal/mol. These computational results give valuable insights into the significance of the two isomers (acetylene and vinylidene) in chemical reaction dynamics and also the experimental search for roaming dynamics in this bimolecular reaction.

Photodissociation Dynamics of CO-Forming Channels on the Ground-State Surface of Methyl Formate at 248 nm: Direct Dynamics Study and Assessment of Generalized Multicenter Impulsive Models

The photodissociation dynamics of methyl formate in the electronic ground state S₀, initiated by a 248 nm-wavelength laser, is studied by direct dynamics simulations. We analyze five channels, where four of them have as products CH₃OH + CO, one leading to the formation of three fragments, H₂CO + H₂ + CO, and a channel characterized by a roaming transition state. The analysis of energy distribution among the degrees of freedom of the product and the comparison with experimental results previously published by other groups provide the ingredients to distinguish the examined dissociation pathways. The interpretation of the results proves that the characterization of dissociation mechanisms must rely on a dynamics approach involving multiple electronic states, including considerations on the features of the S₁/S₀ conical intersection. Here, we also assess the generalized multicenter impulsive model, GMCIM, that has been designed for dissociation processes with exit barriers, and the energy distribution in the products is predicted on the basis of information from the saddle points and the intrinsic reaction coordinates. Main features, advantages, limits, and future perspectives of the method are reported and discussed.

Plumbing Potentials for Molecules with Up To Tens of Atoms: How to Find Saddle Points and Fix Leaky Holes

Potential energy surfaces (PESs) play an indispensable role in molecular dynamics but are notoriously difficult to flesh out properly in large-dimensional spaces. In particular, the undetected presence of PES holes, i.e., unphysical saddle points beyond which the potential energy drops arbitrarily, can have devastating effects on both classical and quantum dynamics calculations. In this study, the Crystal algorithm is developed as a tool for efficiently and accurately finding PES holes, as well as legitimate saddle points, even in very large-dimensional configuration spaces. The approach is applied to three large-dimensional PESs for molecular systems of current interest: uracil, naphthalene, and formic acid dimer. Low-lying PES holes are discovered and located for the first two systems-including naphthalene, for which no holes were previously suspected, to the best of our knowledge. Likewise, the double-well, double-proton-transfer isomerization saddle point for formic acid dimer is also located.

Roaming Reactions and Dynamics in the van der Waals Region

Roaming reactions were first clearly identified in photodissociation of formaldehyde 15 years ago, and roaming dynamics are now recognized as a universal aspect of chemical reactivity. These reactions typically involve frustrated near-dissociation of a quasibound system to radical fragments, followed by reorientation at long range and intramolecular abstraction. The consequences can be unexpected formation of molecular products, depletion of the radical pool in chemical systems, and formation of products with unusual internal state distributions. In this review, I examine some current aspects of roaming reactions with an emphasis on experimental results, focusing on possible quantum effects in roaming and roaming dynamics in bimolecular systems. These considerations lead to a more inclusive definition of roaming reactions as those for which key dynamics take place at long range.

Roaming Dynamics and Conformational Memory in Photolysis of Formic Acid at 193 nm Using Time-resolved Fourier-transform Infrared Emission Spectroscopy

In photodissociation of trans-formic acid (HCOOH) at 193 nm, we have observed two molecular channels of CO + H₂O and CO₂ + H₂ by using 1 μs-resolved Fourier-transform infrared emission spectroscopy. With the aid of spectral simulation, the CO spectra are rotationally resolved for each vibrational state (v = 1-8). Each of the resulting vibrational and rotational population distributions is characteristic of two Boltzmann profiles with different temperatures, originating from either transition state pathway or OH-roaming to form the same CO + H₂O products. The H₂O roaming co-product is also spectrally simulated to understand the interplay with the CO product in the internal energy partitioning. Accordingly, this work has evaluated the internal energy disposal for the CO and H₂O roaming products; especially the vibrational-state dependence of the roaming signature is reported for the first time. Further, given a 1 μs resolution, the temporal dependence of the CO/CO₂ product ratio at v ≥ 1 rises from 3 to 10 of study, thereby characterizing the effect of conformational memory and well reconciling with the disputed results reported previously between absorption and emission methods.

Strong inverse kinetic isotope effect observed in ammonia charge exchange reactions

Isotopic substitution has long been used to understand the detailed mechanisms of chemical reactions; normally the substitution of hydrogen by deuterium leads to a slower reaction. Here, we report our findings on the charge transfer collisions of cold [Formula: see text] ions and two isotopologues of ammonia, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. Deuterated ammonia is found to react more than three times faster than hydrogenated ammonia. Classical capture models are unable to account for this pronounced inverse kinetic isotope effect. Moreover, detailed ab initio calculations cannot identify any (energetically accessible) crossing points between the reactant and product potential energy surfaces, indicating that electron transfer is likely to be slow. The higher reactivity of [Formula: see text] is attributed to the greater density of states (and therefore lifetime) of the deuterated reaction complex compared to the hydrogenated system. Our observations could provide valuable insight into possible mechanisms contributing to deuterium fractionation in the interstellar medium.

Collision-induced and complex-mediated roaming dynamics in the H + C2H4 → H2 + C2H3 reaction

Roaming is a novel mechanism in reaction dynamics. It describes an unusual pathway, which can be quite different from the conventional minimum-energy path, leading to products. While roaming has been reported or suggested in a number of unimolecular reactions, it has been rarely reported for bimolecular reactions. Here, we report a high-level computational study of roaming dynamics in the important bimolecular combustion reaction H + C₂H₄ → H₂ + C₂H₃, using a new, high-level machine learning-based potential energy surface. In addition to the complex-mediated roaming mechanism, a non-complex forming roaming mechanism is found. It can be described as a direct inelastic collision where the departing H atom roams and then abstracts an H atom. We denoted this as “collision-induced” roaming. These two roaming mechanisms have different angular distributions; however, both produce highly internally excited C₂H₃. The roaming pathway leads to remarkably different dynamics as compared with the direct abstraction pathway. A clear signature of the roaming mechanism is highly internally excited C₂H₃, which could be observed experimentally.

Collision-induced and complex-mediated roaming mechanisms are revealed for an important bimolecular reaction in combustion.

How important is roaming in the photodegradation of nitrobenzene?

Three pathways have been found for the formation of NO from nitrobenzene photodegradation that lead to either low or high translational energy, with a roaming mechanism involved at high excitation energies.

Evidence for lambda doublet propensity in the UV photodissociation of ozone

The photodissociation of O₃ at 266 nm has been studied using velocity mapped ion imaging. We report temperature-dependent vector correlations for the O₂(a¹Δ_g, v = 0, j = 18-20) fragments at molecular beam temperatures of 70 K, 115 K, and 170 K. Both the fragment spatial anisotropy and the v-j correlations are found to be increasingly depolarized with increasing beam temperature. At all temperatures, the v-j correlations for the j = 19 state were shown to be reduced compared to those of j = 18 and 20, while no such odd/even rotational state difference was observed for the spatial anisotropy, consistent with previous measurements. We find that temperature-dependent differences in the populations and v-j correlations between the odd and even rotational states can be explained by a Λ-doublet propensity model. Although symmetry conservation should lead to formation of only the A' Λ-doublet component, and only even rotational states, out-of-plane rotation of the parent molecule breaks the planar symmetry and permits the formation of the A″ Λ-doublet component and odd rotational states. A simple classical model to treat the effect of parent rotation on the v-j correlation and the odd/even rotational population alternation reproduces both the current measurements and previously reported rotational distributions, suggesting that the "odd" behavior originates from a Λ-doublet propensity, and not from a mass independent curve crossing effect, as previously proposed.

Imaging the nonreactive collisional quenching dynamics of NO (A2Σ+) radicals with O2 (X3Σg -)

Nitric oxide (NO) radicals are ubiquitous chemical intermediates present in the atmosphere and in combustion processes, where laser-induced fluorescence is extensively used on the NO (A²Σ⁺ ← X²Π) band to report on fuel-burning properties. However, accurate fluorescence quantum yields and NO concentration measurements are impeded by electronic quenching of NO (A²Σ⁺) to NO (X²Π) with colliding atomic and molecular species. To improve predictive combustion models and develop a molecular-level understanding of NO (A²Σ⁺) quenching, we report the velocity map ion images and product state distributions of NO (X²Π, v″ = 0, J″, F_n, Λ) following nonreactive collisional quenching of NO (A²Σ⁺) with molecular oxygen, O₂ (X³Σ_g ^-). A novel dual-flow pulse valve nozzle is constructed and implemented to carry out the NO (A²Σ⁺) electronic quenching studies and to limit NO₂ formation. The isotropic ion images reveal that the NO-O₂ system evolves through a long-lived NO₃ collision complex prior to formation of products. Furthermore, the corresponding total kinetic energy release distributions support that O₂ collision coproducts are formed primarily in the c¹Σ_u ^- electronic state with NO (X²Π, v″ = 0, J″, F_n, Λ). The product state distributions also indicate that NO (X²Π) is generated with a propensity to occupy the Π(A″) Λ-doublet state, which is consistent with the NO π^* orbital aligned perpendicular to nuclear rotation. The deviations between experimental results and statistical phase space theory simulations illustrate the key role that the conical intersection plays in the quenching dynamics to funnel population to product rovibronic levels.

Observation of the Carbon Elimination Channel in Vacuum Ultraviolet Photodissociation of OCS

The textbook mechanism for OCS photodissociation mainly involves the CO + S or CS + O product channel via a single bond fission. However, a third dissociation channel concerning the cleavage of both C-S and C-O bonds yielding SO + C products, though thermodynamically allowed, has never been verified experimentally to date. By using a tunable vacuum ultraviolet laser light and time-sliced velocity map ion imaging technique, we have clearly observed the SO(X³Σ^-) + C(³P_J=0) products as the vacuum ultraviolet laser photon energy gradually exceeds its thermodynamic threshold. The corresponding SO(X³Σ^-) coproducts are highly vibrationally excited and show varying angular distributions from isotropic to anisotropic as the excitation photon energy increases. Theoretical analysis suggests that a fast nonadiabatic pathway plays a dominant role in the formation of the anisotropic SO products. That isotropic products arise as the excitation photon energies approach the thermodynamic threshold can be reasonably explained by the "roaming mechanism".

Roaming Dynamics in the Photodissociation of Formic Acid at 230 nm

Roaming dynamics is observed in the photodissociation of formic acid (HCOOH) at 230 nm by using the slice imaging method. In combination with rotational state selective (2 + 1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization of the CO fragments, the speed distributions of the CO fragments exhibit a low recoil velocity at low rotational levels of J = 9 and 20, while the velocity distributions of CO at high rotational levels of J = 30 and 48 show a relatively large recoil velocity. The experimental results indicate that the roaming of OH radical should be related with the formation of CO + H₂O channel at the present photolysis energy. Unlike the roaming pathways occurring in H₂CO that can be described by loose flat potential, our CO speed distribution analysis suggests the presence of a "tight" flat potential in the roaming dynamics of HCOOH molecules.

H2 roaming chemistry and the formation of H3+ from organic molecules in strong laser fields

Roaming mechanisms, involving the brief generation of a neutral atom or molecule that stays in the vicinity before reacting with the remaining atoms of the precursor, are providing valuable insights into previously unexplained chemical reactions. Here, the mechanistic details and femtosecond time-resolved dynamics of H₃⁺ formation from a series of alcohols with varying primary carbon chain lengths are obtained through a combination of strong-field laser excitation studies and ab initio molecular dynamics calculations. For small alcohols, four distinct pathways involving hydrogen migration and H₂ roaming prior to H₃⁺ formation are uncovered. Despite the increased number of hydrogens and possible combinations leading to H₃⁺ formation, the yield decreases as the carbon chain length increases. The fundamental mechanistic findings presented here explore the formation of H₃⁺, the most important ion in interstellar chemistry, through H₂ roaming occurring in ionic species.

H₂ roaming is associated with H₃⁺ formation when certain organic molecules are exposed to strong laser fields. Here, the mechanistic details and time-resolved dynamics of H₃⁺ formation from a series of alcohols were obtained and found that the product yield decreases as the carbon chain length increases.

Invited Review Article: Photofragment imaging

Photodissociation studies in molecular beams that employ position-sensitive particle detection to map product recoil velocities emerged thirty years ago and continue to evolve with new laser and detector technologies. These powerful methods allow application of tunable laser detection of single product quantum states, simultaneous measurement of velocity and angular momentum polarization, measurement of joint product state distributions for the detected and undetected products, coincident detection of multiple product channels, and application to radicals and ions as well as closed-shell molecules. These studies have permitted deep investigation of photochemical dynamics for a broad range of systems, revealed new reaction mechanisms, and addressed problems of practical importance in atmospheric, combustion, and interstellar chemistry. This review presents an historical overview, a detailed technical account of the range of methods employed, and selected experimental highlights illustrating the capabilities of the method.

A generalized unimolecular impulsive model for curved reaction path

This work aims to introduce a generalized impulsive model for unimolecular dissociation processes. This model allows us to take into account the curvature of the reaction path explicitly. It is a generalization of the previously developed multi-center impulsive model [P.-Y. Tsai and K.-C. Lin, J. Phys. Chem. A 119, 29 (2015)]. Several limitations of conventional impulsive models are eliminated by this study: (1) Unlike conventional impulsive models, in which a single molecular geometry is responsible for the impulse determination, the gradients on the whole dissociation path are taken into account. The model can treat dissociation pathways with large curvatures and loose saddle points. (2) The method can describe the vibrational excitation of polyatomic fragments due to the bond formation by multi-center impulse. (3) The available energy in conventional impulsive models is separated into uncoupled statistical and impulsive energy reservoirs, while the interplay between these reservoirs is allowed in the new model. (4) The quantum state correlation between fragments can be preserved in analysis. Dissociations of several molecular systems including the roaming pathways of formaldehyde, nitrate radical, acetaldehyde, and glyoxal are chosen as benchmarks. The predicted photofragment energy and vector distributions are consistent with the experimental results reported previously. In these examples, the capability of the new model to treat the curved dissociation path, loose saddle points, polyatomic fragments, and multiple-body dissociation is verified. As a cheaper computational tool with respect to ab initio on-the-fly direct dynamic simulations, this model can provide detailed information on the energy disposal, quantum state correlation, and stereodynamics in unimolecular dissociation processes.

What is special about how roaming chemical reactions traverse their potential surfaces? Differences in geodesic paths between roaming and non-roaming events

With the notable exception of some illustrative two-degree-of-freedom models whose surprising classical dynamics has been worked out in detail, theories of roaming have largely bypassed the issue of when and why the counterintuitive phenomenon of roaming occurs. We propose that a useful way to begin to address these issues is to look for the geodesic (most efficient) pathways through the potential surfaces of candidate systems. Although roaming manifests itself in an unusual behavior at asymptotic geometries, we found in the case of formaldehyde dissociation that it was the pathways traversing the parts of the potential surface corresponding to highly vibrationally excited reactants that were the most revealing. An examination of the geodesics for roaming pathways in this region finds that they are much less tightly defined than the geodesics in that same region that lead directly to dissociation (whether into closed-shell products or into radical products). Thus, the broader set of options available to the roaming channel gives it an entropic advantage over more conventional reaction channels. These observations suggest that what leads to roaming in other systems may be less the presence of a localized "roaming transition state," than the existence of an entire region of the potential surface conducive to multiple equivalent pathways.

Liberation of H2 from (o-C6H4Me)3P-H(+) + (-)H-B(p-C6F4H)3 ion-pair: A transition-state in the minimum energy path versus the transient species in Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics

Using Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) with density functional theory, transition-state (TS) calculations, and the quantitative energy decomposition analysis (EDA), we examined the mechanism of H₂-liberation from LB-H⁽⁺⁾ + ^(-)H-LA ion-pair, 1, in which the Lewis base (LB) is (o-C₆H₄Me)₃P and the Lewis acid (LA) is B(p-C₆F₄H)₃. BOMD simulations indicate that the path of H₂ liberation from the ion-pair 1 goes via the short-lived transient species, LB⋯H₂⋯LA, which are structurally reminiscent of the TS-structure in the minimum-energy-path describing the reversible reaction between H₂ and (o-C₆H₄Me)₃P/B(p-C₆F₄H)₃ frustrated Lewis pair (FLP). With electronic structure calculations performed on graphics processing units, our BOMD data-set covers more than 1 ns of evolution of the ion-pair 1 at temperature T ≈ 400 K. BOMD simulations produced H₂-recombination events with various durations of H₂ remaining fully recombined as a molecule within a LB/LA attractive "pocket"-from very short vibrational-time scale to time scales in the range of a few hundred femtoseconds. With the help of perturbational approach to trajectory-propagation over a saddle-area, we directly examined dynamics of H₂-liberation. Using EDA, we elucidated interactions between the cationic and anionic fragments in the ion-pair 1 and between the molecular fragments in the TS-structure. We have also considered a model that qualitatively takes into account the potential energy characteristics of H-H recombination and H₂-release plus inertia of molecular motion of the (o-C₆H₄Me)₃P/B(p-C₆F₄H)₃ FLP.

Hamiltonian flow over saddles for exploring molecular phase space structures

Despite using potential energy surfaces, multivariable functions on molecular configuration space, to comprehend chemical dynamics for decades, the real happenings in molecules occur in phase space, in which the states of a classical dynamical system are completely determined by the coordinates and their conjugate momenta. Theoretical and numerical results are presented, employing alanine dipeptide as a model system, to support the view that geometrical structures in phase space dictate the dynamics of molecules, the fingerprints of which are traced by following the Hamiltonian flow above saddles. By properly selecting initial conditions in alanine dipeptide, we have found internally free rotor trajectories the existence of which can only be justified in a phase space perspective.This article is part of the theme issue 'Modern theoretical chemistry'.

Theories and simulations of roaming

The phenomenon of roaming in chemical reactions has now become both commonly observed in experiment and extensively supported by theory and simulations. Roaming occurs in highly-excited molecules when the trajectories of atomic motion often bypass the minimum energy pathway and produce reaction in unexpected ways from unlikely geometries. The prototypical example is the unimolecular dissociation of formaldehyde (H₂CO), in which the "normal" reaction proceeds through a tight transition state to yield H₂ + CO but for which a high fraction of dissociations take place via a "roaming" mechanism in which one H atom moves far from the HCO, almost to dissociation, and then returns to abstract the second H atom. We review below the theories and simulations that have recently been developed to address and understand this new reaction phenomenon.

Perspective: chemical dynamics simulations of non-statistical reaction dynamics

Non-statistical chemical dynamics are exemplified by disagreements with the transition state (TS), RRKM and phase space theories of chemical kinetics and dynamics. The intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) is often used for the former two theories, and non-statistical dynamics arising from non-IRC dynamics are often important. In this perspective, non-statistical dynamics are discussed for chemical reactions, with results primarily obtained from chemical dynamics simulations and to a lesser extent from experiment. The non-statistical dynamical properties discussed are: post-TS dynamics, including potential energy surface bifurcations, product energy partitioning in unimolecular dissociation and avoiding exit-channel potential energy minima; non-RRKM unimolecular decomposition; non-IRC dynamics; direct mechanisms for bimolecular reactions with pre- and/or post-reaction potential energy minima; non-TS theory barrier recrossings; and roaming dynamics.This article is part of the themed issue 'Theoretical and computational studies of non-equilibrium and non-statistical dynamics in the gas phase, in the condensed phase and at interfaces'.

Roaming-Mediated CH2NH Elimination from the Ionization of Aromatic Ethylamines

The ionization of aromatic ethylamines by photons or electrons leads to elimination of CH₂NH fragments, supposedly deriving from the McLafferty rearrangement involving intramolecular γ‐hydrogen transfer. Using tryptamine and phenethylamine as examples, the results reported here suggest that the McLafferty mechanism is inadequate for interpreting the observations of CH₂NH elimination due to much higher calculated appearance energy than experimentally measured values. Furthermore, by considering the roaming‐mediated effect, the calculated appearance energy for the elimination of CH₂NH fragments is reduced and matches well with the experimental results and verifies the existence of roaming‐mediated effect. This effect could potentially be extended to explain the general CH₂NH elimination of aromatic ethylamines. Due to the similar hydrogen transfer to that of the McLafferty mechanism, the roaming‐mediated effect was taken into account to suggest a novel mechanism, termed the “roaming‐modified McLafferty rearrangement”, that explains the observations of CH₂NH elimination in the ionization of aromatic ethylamines. This is a reasonable modification of the McLafferty rearrangement mechanism.

New experimental evidence to support roaming in the reaction Cl + isobutene (i-C4H8)

The reaction Cl + isobutene (i-C₄H₈) was reported by Suits et al. to proceed via, in addition to abstraction, an addition-elimination path following a roaming excursion of Cl; a near-zero translational energy release and an isotropic angular distribution observed at a small collision energy characterized this mechanism. We employed a new experimental method to further characterize this roaming mechanism through observation of the internal distribution of HCl (v, J) and their temporal behavior upon irradiation of a mixture of Cl₂C₂O₂ and i-C₄H₈ in He or Ar buffer gas. With 1–3 Torr buffer gas added to approach the condition of small collision energy, the intensities of emission of HCl (v = 1, 2) and the HCl production rates increased significantly; Ar shows a more significant effect than He because Ar quenches Cl more efficiently to reduce the collisional energy and facilitate the roaming path. According to kinetic modeling, the rate of addition-elimination (roaming) increased from k_E ≈ 2 × 10⁵ s⁻¹ when little buffer gas was present to ~1.9 × 10⁶ s⁻¹ when 2–3 Torr of Ar was added, and the branching ratio for formation of [HCl (v = 2)]/[HCl (v = 1)] increased from 0.02 ± 0.01 for abstraction to 0.06 ± 0.01 for roaming.

Toward Understanding the Roaming Mechanism in H + MgH → Mg + HH Reaction

The roaming mechanism in the reaction H + MgH →Mg + HH is investigated by classical and quantum dynamics employing an accurate ab initio three-dimensional ground electronic state potential energy surface. The reaction dynamics are explored by running trajectories initialized on a four-dimensional dividing surface anchored on three-dimensional normally hyperbolic invariant manifold associated with a family of unstable orbiting periodic orbits in the entrance channel of the reaction (H + MgH). By locating periodic orbits localized in the HMgH well or involving H orbiting around the MgH diatom, and following their continuation with the total energy, regions in phase space where reactive or nonreactive trajectories may be trapped are found. In this way roaming reaction pathways are deduced in phase space. Patterns similar to periodic orbits projected into configuration space are found for the quantum bound and resonance eigenstates. Roaming is attributed to the capture of the trajectories in the neighborhood of certain periodic orbits. The complex forming trajectories in the HMgH well can either return to the radical channel or "roam" to the MgHH minimum from where the molecule may react.

Phase Space Structures Explain Hydrogen Atom Roaming in Formaldehyde Decomposition

We re-examine the prototypical roaming reaction--hydrogen atom roaming in formaldehyde decomposition--from a phase space perspective. Specifically, we address the question "why do trajectories roam, rather than dissociate through the radical channel?" We describe and compute the phase space structures that define and control all possible reactive events for this reaction, as well as provide a dynamically exact description of the roaming region in phase space. Using these phase space constructs, we show that in the roaming region, there is an unstable periodic orbit whose stable and unstable manifolds define a conduit that both encompasses all roaming trajectories exiting the formaldehyde well and shepherds them toward the H2···CO well.
