Characteristics of hydrocarbons in sediment core samples from the northern Okinawa Trough

Sediment core samples from the northern Okinawa Trough (OT) were analyzed to determine abundances and distributions of hydrocarbons by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The results show that the n-alkanes in this sediment core conform to a bimodal distribution, and exhibit an odd-to-even predominance of high molecular weights compared to an even-to-odd predominance in low molecular weight n-alkanes with maxima at C₁₆ and C₁₈. The concentrations of bitumen, alkanes and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were higher in samples S10-07 than all others. Three maturity parameters as well as the ratios between parent phenanthrenes (Ps) and methylphenanthrenes (MPs) in samples S10-07 and S10-17 were higher. The distribution and composition of hydrocarbons in sample S10-07 suggest that one, or several, undetected hydrothermal fields may be present in the region of this sediment core. Results also suggest that volcanism may be the main reason for the observed distribution and composition of hydrocarbons in S10-17 sample.

Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for analyses of organic compounds and biomarkers as tracers for geological, environmental, and forensic research

Gas chromatography, especially when coupled with mass spectrometry, is the analytical method of choice for elucidation of biomarker compounds present in organic mixtures extracted from geological, environmental, and biological samples. This review describes the biomarker concept, i. e., the precursor natural products to the geological/environmental derivatives, and their application as multi-tracers in the geosphere and ambient environment. The mass spectrometric methods currently utilized for such analyses are reviewed with a general key to the literature, and typical examples of applications using GC-MS are also described.

A review of current applications of mass spectrometry for biomarker/molecular tracer elucidation

Hydrothermal petroleum from lacustrine sedimentary organic matter in the East African Rift

Cape Kalamba oil seeps occur at the south end of the Ubwari Peninsula, at the intersection of faults controlling the morphology of the northern basin of the Tanganyika Rift, East Africa. Oil samples collected at the surface of the lake 3-4 km offshore from Cape Kalamba have been studied. The aliphatic hydrocarbon and biomarker compositions, with the absence of the typical suite of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, indicate an origin from hydrothermal alteration of immature microbial biomass in the sediments. These data show a similarity between a tar sample from the beach and the petroleum from the oil seeps, and confirm that the source of these oils is from organic matter consisting mainly of bacterial and degraded algal biomass, altered by hydrothermal activity. The compositions also demonstrate a < 200 degrees C temperature for formation/generation of this hydrothermal petroleum, similar to the fluid temperature identified for the Pemba hydrothermal site located 150 km north of Cape Kalamba. The 14C age of 25.6 ka B.P. obtained for the tar ball suggests that Pleistocene lake sediments could be the source rock. Hydrothermal generation may have occurred slightly before 25 ka B.P., during a dry climatic environment, when the lake level was lower than today. These results also suggest that the Cape Kalamba hydrothermal activity did not occur in connection with an increased flux of meteoric water, higher water tables and lake levels as demonstrated in the Kenya Rift and for the Pemba site. Hydrothermal petroleum formation is a facile process also in continental rift systems and should be considered in exploration for energy resources in such locales.

Carbon isotope systematics of individual hydrocarbons in hydrothermal petroleum from Escanaba Trough, northeastern Pacific Ocean

We submitted individual aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in samples of hydrothermal petroleum from Escanaba Trough to compound specific isotope analysis to trace their origins. The carbon isotope compositions of the alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (means -27.5 and -24.7%, respectively) reflect a primarily terrestrial organic matter source.

High molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in hydrothermal petroleums from the Gulf of California and Northeast Pacific Ocean

Hydrothermal petroleums and heavy tars have been analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) with molecular weights greater than that of coronene (300 da). Samples from the hydrothermal systems in the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California) and in the Escanaba Trough and Middle Valley (Northeastern Pacific) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and high pressure liquid chromatography with diode-array absorbance detection. Mass spectra and fluorescence spectra were used to characterize the compounds. Several large PAHs with six and more rings were identified among the heavy PAH. Production routes via one-ring build-up and Scholl-condensation are proposed to explain the observed structures. The variations in PAH concentrations and distributions between samples from different locales are a consequence of the hydrothermal conditions of generation, migration, and post-depositional alteration.

Evidence for organic synthesis in high temperature aqueous media--facts and prognosis

Hydrothermal systems are common along the active tectonic areas of the earth. Potential sites being studied for organic matter alteration and possible organic synthesis are spreading ridges, off-axis systems, back-arc activity, hot spots, volcanism, and subduction. Organic matter alteration, primarily reductive and generally from immature organic detritus, occurs in these high temperature and rapid fluid flow hydrothermal regimes. Hot circulating water (temperature range - warm to >400 degrees C) is responsible for these molecular alterations, expulsion and migration. Compounds that are obviously synthesized are minor components because they are generally masked by the pyrolysis products formed from contemporary natural organic precursors. Heterocyclic sulfur compounds have been identified in high temperature zones and hydrothermal petroleums of the Guaymas Basin vent systems. They can be interpreted as being synthesized from formaldehyde and sulfur or HS kappa- in the hydrothermal fluids. Other products from potential synthesis reactions have not yet been found in the natural systems but are expected based on known industrial processes and inferences from experimental simulation data. Various industrial processes have been reviewed and are of relevance to hydrothermal synthesis of organic compounds. The reactivity of organic compounds in hot water (200-350 degrees C) has been studied in autoclaves, and supercritical water as a medium for chemistry has also been evaluated. This high temperature aqueous organic chemistry and the strong reducing conditions of the natural systems suggest this as an important route to produce organic compounds on the primitive earth. Thus a better understanding of the potential syntheses of organic compounds in hydrothermal systems will require investigations of the chemistry of condensation, autocatalysis, catalysis and hydrolysis reactions in aqueous mineral buffered systems over a range of temperatures from warm to >400 degrees C.

Aqueous high-temperature and high-pressure organic geochemistry of hydrothermal vent systems

Hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic spreading centers are now recognized as relatively common phenomena, and the organic chemical alterations occurring there are rapid and efficient. In the marine hydrothermal systems at water depths > 1.5 km, the conditions driving chemical reactions are high temperatures (up to >400 degrees C), confining pressures (>150 bar), and other parameters such as pH, Eh, and mineralogy in an aqueous open flow medium. Continental hydrothermal systems may also be of interest, as, for example, in failed or dormant rifts and regions around piercement volcanoes. Organic matter alteration by reductive reactions to petroleum hydrocarbons occurs in hydrothermal systems over a wide temperature window (approximately 60 to >400 degrees C), under elevated pressure, and in a brief geological time (years to hundreds of years). The products are rapidly moved as bulk phase or in fluids from the regions at higher temperatures to areas at lower temperatures, where the high molecular weight material separates from the bulk. These conditions are conducive to organic chemistry which yields concurrent products by primarily reduction (due to mineral buffering), oxidation (high thermal stress), and synthesis reactions. This chemistry is just beginning to be elucidated by the geochemical community, but there are various industrial applications which provide useful preliminary insight. Therefore, the behavior of organic matter (inclusive of methane to high molecular weight compounds > C40) in warm to supercritical water needs to be characterized to understand the implications of this novel phenomenon in geological and geochemical processes, and the chemistry occurring over the full temperature spectrum of hydrothermal systems is of relevance to origins of life research.
