Development of Diapiric Structures in the Upper Mantle Due to Phase Transitions

Linking mantle upwelling with the lithosphere descent [corrected] and the Japan Sea evolution: a hypothesis

Recent seismic tomography studies image a low velocity zone (interpreted as a high temperature anomaly) in the mantle beneath the subducting Pacific plate near the Japanese islands at the depth of about 400 km. This thermal feature is rather peculiar in terms of the conventional view of mantle convection and subduction zones. Here we present a dynamic restoration of the thermal state of the mantle beneath this region assimilating geophysical, geodetic, and geological data up to 40 million years. We hypothesise that the hot mantle upwelling beneath the Pacific plate partly penetrated through the subducting plate into the mantle wedge and generated two smaller hot upwellings, which contributed to the rapid subsidence in the basins of the Japan Sea and to back-arc spreading. Another part of the hot mantle migrated upward beneath the Pacific lithosphere, and the presently observed hot anomaly is a remnant part of this mantle upwelling.

Intershield geochemical differences among Hawaiian volcanoes: implications for source compositions, melting process and magma ascent paths

As Hawaiian volcanoes develop, their lavas systematically change in composition and isotopic ratios of Sr, Nd and Pb. These trends provide important constraints for understanding plume-related volcanism as a volcano migrates away from the hotspot. There are also geochemical differences between Hawaiian shields. In particular, lavas from adjacent shields such as Kilauea and Mauna Loa on Hawaii and Koolau and Waianae on Oahu have significant differences in abundances of some major and incompatible elements and isotopic ratios of Sr, Nd and Pb. Some incompatible element abundance ratios, such as Zr/Nb and Sr/Nb, are correlated with intershield differences in Sr and Nd isotope ratios, but these isotopic ratios are not correlated with intershield differences in major element composition, or even parent/daughter abundance ratios such as Rb/Sr and Sm/Nd. Moreover, at Kilauea and Mauna Loa the intershield differences have apparently persisted for a relatively long time, perhaps 100 ka. These intershield geochemical differences provide important constraints on plume volcanism. Specifically, (i) each volcano must have distinct magma ascent paths from the region of melt segregation; (ii) the 25-50 km distance between adjacent, but geochemically distinct, shields requires that the sources vary on a similar scale, and that the melt production region is similarly restricted. The absence of correlations between lava compositions and radiogenic isotope ratios provides evidence for significant differences in melting process such as each shield forming by a different mean extent of melting with melt segregation at different mean pressures. Two types of models are consistent with the intershield geochemical differences: (i) a relatively large radius, ca . 40 km, plume conduit with a systematic spatial distribution of geochemical heterogeneities; or (ii) a small radius, less than 20 km, plume conduit composed of geochemically distinct diapirs. Because relatively small radius diapirs of limited vertical extent are too small to create the large Hawaiian shields, a possible alternative is a continuous conduit containing solitary waves which transport geochemically distinct packets of material.

Asymmetric Phase Effects and Mantle Convection Patterns

Recent high-pressure experiments and thermodynamic calculations have shown that the Clapeyron slope of the spinel-perovskite phase transition at a depth of 660 kilometers in the Earth's mantle changes from negative to positive at temperatures above 1700 degrees to 2000 degrees C. In numerical experiments that account for this phase behavior, cold downwelling flows were impeded at the phase boundary, but hot plumes ascended to the upper mantle with ease. The resultant mantle convection was partially layered and strongly time-dependent. Mantle layering was weaker when the mantle was hotter and when the Rayleigh number was larger.

Three-Dimensional Instabilities of Mantle Convection with Multiple Phase Transitions

The effects of multiple phase transitions on mantle convection are investigated by numerical simulations that are based on three-dimensional models. These simulations show that cold sheets of mantle material collide at junctions, merge, and form a strong downflow that is stopped temporarily by the transition zone. The accumulated cold material gives rise to a strong gravitational instability that causes the cold mass to sink rapidly into the lower mantle. This process promotes a massive exchange between the lower and upper mantles and triggers a global instability in the adjacent plume system. This mechanism may be cyclic in nature and may be linked to the generation of superplumes.
