Abstract
The prosperous advancement of supramolecular chemistry has motivated us to construct supramolecular hybrid materials with integrated functionalities. Herein, we report an innovative type of macrocycle-strutted coordination microparticle (MSCM) using pillararenes as the struts and "pockets", which performs unique activities of fluorescence-monitored photosensitization and substrate-selective photocatalytic degradation. Prepared via a convenient one-step solvothermal method, MSCM showcases the incorporation of supramolecular hybridization and macrocycles, endowed with well-ordered spherical architectures, superior photophysical properties, and photosensitizing capacity, where a self-reporting fluorescence response is exhibited upon photoinduced generation of multiple reactive oxygen species. Importantly, photocatalytic behaviors of MSCM show marked divergence toward three different substrates and reveal pronounced substrate-selective catalytic mechanisms, attributing to the variety in the affinity of substrates toward MSCM surfaces and pillararene cavities. This study brings new insight into the design of supramolecular hybrid systems with integrated properties and further exploration of functional macrocycle-based materials.

Encapsulation Enhances the Catalytic Activity of C-N Coupling: Reaction Mechanism of a Cu(I)/Calix[8]arene Supramolecular Catalyst. ChemCatChem 2022; 14:e202200662. Abstract
Development of C-N coupling methodologies based on Earth-abundant metals is a promising strategy in homogeneous catalysis for sustainable processes. However, such systems suffer from deactivation and low catalytic activity. We here report that encapsulation of Cu(I) within the phenanthroyl-containing calix[8]arene derivative 1,5-(2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroyl)-2,3,4,6,7,8-hexamethyl-p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene (C8PhenMe6 ) significantly enhances C-N coupling activity up to 92 % yield in the reaction of aryl halides and aryl amines, with low catalyst loadings (2.5 % mol). A tailored multiscale computational protocol based on Molecular Dynamics simulations and DFT investigations revealed an oxidative addition/reductive elimination process of the supramolecular catalyst [Cu(C8PhenMe6)I]. The computational investigations uncovered the origins of the enhanced catalytic activity over its molecular analogues: Catalyst deactivation through dimerization is prevented, and product release facilitated. Capturing the dynamic profile of the macrocycle and the impact of non-covalent interactions on reactivity allows for the rationalization of the behavior of the flexible supramolecular catalysts employed.

Abstract
As biocatalysts, enzymes are characterized by their high catalytic efficiency and strong specificity but are relatively fragile by requiring narrow and specific reactive conditions for activity. Synthetic catalysts offer an opportunity for more chemical versatility operating over a wider range of conditions but currently do not reach the remarkable performance of natural enzymes. Here we consider some new design strategies based on the contributions of nonlocal electric fields and thermodynamic fluctuations to both improve the catalytic step and turnover for rate acceleration in arbitrary synthetic catalysts through bioinspired studies of natural enzymes. With a focus on the enzyme as a whole catalytic construct, we illustrate the translational impact of natural enzyme principles to synthetic enzymes, supramolecular capsules, and electrocatalytic surfaces.

Abstract
The hetero-tetranuclear Cu2+ /Ca2+ /Ca2+ /Cu2+ complex obtained with the N,N'-bis((3-hydroxy-4-pyron-2-yl)methyl)-N,N'-dimethylethylendiamine (Malten) ligand has been studied in solid and solution states as scaffold to bind anions. Three crystal structures showing the same metal ions sequence have been examined; they display a tetracharged complex cation neutralized by four monocharged anions. The anions play two different roles: as coordinated (two ClO4 - , Cl- or NO3 - ) or ancillary (two ClO4 - ) guests. The tetranuclear scaffold hosts two anions also in aqueous and ethanol solutions. Spectrophotometric studies in ethanol allowed to determine the addition constant values for Cl- and Br- (Log K1-2 =4.43(4), 4.39(3) for Cl- , 3.80(3), 3.54(2) for Br- ) while the others, although bound, showed lower affinity for the scaffold. Both the crystals and the solutions change their color depending on the added anion, namely pink, dark green or blue in the presence of ClO4 - , Cl- or NO3 - , respectively, thus the presence of the different anions is visible to the naked eye. The hetero-tetranuclear Cu2+ /Ca2+ /Ca2+ /Cu2+ complex is a versatile architecture to be used as scaffold for anion binding.

Abstract
Identifying the location and expression levels of enzymes under hypoxic conditions in cancer cells is vital in early-stage cancer diagnosis and monitoring. By encapsulating a fluorescent substrate, L-NO2 , within the NADH mimic-containing metal-organic capsule Zn-MPB, we developed a cofactor-substrate-based supramolecular luminescent probe for ultrafast detection of hypoxia-related enzymes in solution in vitro and in vivo. The host-guest structure fuses the coenzyme and substrate into one supramolecular probe to avoid control by NADH, switching the catalytic process of nitroreductase from a double-substrate mechanism to a single-substrate one. This probe promotes enzyme efficiency by altering the substrate catalytic process and enhances the electron transfer efficiency through an intra-molecular pathway with increased activity. The enzyme content and fluorescence intensity showed a linear relationship and equilibrium was obtained in seconds, showing potential for early tumor diagnosis, biomimetic catalysis, and prodrug activation.

Abstract
The preparation of fluorescent discrete supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) has attracted considerable attention within the fields of supramolecular chemistry, materials science, and biological sciences. However, many challenges remain. For instance, fluorescence quenching often occurs due to the heavy-atom effect arising from the Pt(II)-based building block in Pt-based SCCs. Moreover, relatively few methods exist for tuning of the emission wavelength of discrete SCCs. Thus, it is still challenging to construct discrete SCCs with high fluorescence quantum yields and tunable fluorescence wavelengths. Here we report nine organoplatinum fluorescent metallacycles that exhibit high fluorescence quantum yields and tunable fluorescence wavelengths through simple regulation of their photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties. Moreover, 3D fluorescent films and fluorescent inks for inkjet printing were fabricated using these metallacycles. This work provides a strategy to solve the fluorescence quenching problem arising from the heavy-atom effect of Pt(II), and offers an alternative approach to tune the emission wavelengths of discrete SCCs in the same solvent. Fluorescent supramolecular coordination complexes are of interest for chemical sensing and optical devices. Here the authors synthesize nine organoplatinum metallacycles with high quantum yields, whose fluorescence wavelengths are tuned through manipulation of their photoinduced electron transfer and intramolecular charge transfer properties.

Abstract
Metallacrown complexes capable of sequestering dianions, as shown in the solid state, also exist in aqueous solution at neutral pH, as demonstrated by calorimetric and mass spectrometric data. The driving forces for the formation of these dimeric complexes in solution strongly depend on the chain length of the guest rather than its degree of unsaturation.

Abstract
A redox-active Cu-based triangle was developed to encapsulate fluorescein for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Control experiments and inactive ATP as an inhibitor were performed to confirm this enzymatic photocatalytic behaviour.
