Freeform generative design of complex functional structures

Generative machine learning is poised to revolutionise a range of domains where rational design has long been the de facto approach: where design is practically a time consuming and frustrating process guided by heuristics and intuition. In this article we focus on the domain of flow chemistry, which is an ideal candidate for generative design approaches. We demonstrate a generative machine learning framework that optimises diverse, bespoke reactor elements for flow chemistry applications, combining evolutionary algorithms and a scalable fluid dynamics solver for in silico performance assessment. Experimental verification confirms the discovery of never-before-seen bespoke mixers whose performance exceeds the state of the art by 45%. These findings highlight the power of autonomous generative design to improve the operational performance of complex functional structures, with potential wide-ranging industrial applications.

Decentralized manufacturing for biomimetics through cooperation of digitization and nanomaterial design

The blooming development of biomimetics has demonstrated infinite possibilities in providing solutions for our technical or engineering problems. Therefore, it makes sense to develop an efficient manufacturing system for biomimetic products to transfer biological techniques to engineering. Compared with conventional manufacturing, the decentralized one assisted by additive manufacturing brings the production process closer to the customized requirement of end users due to the accompanying manufacturing freedom in terms of both architecture coding and functionality distribution. Decentralized manufacturing is implemented through firstly deconstructing and analyzing the organism and subsequently establishing the manufacturing scheme. In this minireview, we take a bird's-eye view on the latest progress of biomimetic manufacturing through a decentralized and reverse perspective right from the selected characteristics of natural organisms, and call for a cooperation of digitization design and nanomaterial design. With further synergetic development of biomimetics, nanomaterial science and digitization-assisted additive manufacturing technology, it is anticipated that the decentralized approach will provide a shortcut towards a high-efficiency manufacturing way for biomimetic products.

3D Printing in Personalized Drug Delivery

Background:

Personalized medicines are becoming more popular as they enable the use of patient’s genomics and hence help in better drug design with fewer side effects. In fact, several doses can be combined into one dosage form which suits the patient’s demography. 3 Dimensional (3D) printing technology for personalized medicine is a modern day treatment method based on genomics of patient.

Methods:

3D printing technology uses digitally controlled devices for formulating API and excipients in a layer by layer pattern for developing a suitable personalized drug delivery system as per the need of patient. It includes various techniques like inkjet printing, fused deposition modelling which can further be classified into continuous inkjet system and drop on demand. In order to formulate such dosage forms, scientists have used various polymers to enhance their acceptance as well as therapeutic efficacy. Polymers like polyvinyl alcohol, poly (lactic acid) (PLA), poly (caprolactone) (PCL) etc can be used during manufacturing.

Results:

Varying number of dosage forms can be produced using 3D printing technology including immediate release tablets, pulsatile release tablets, and transdermal dosage forms etc. The 3D printing technology can be explored successfully to develop personalized medicines which could play a vital role in the treatment of lifethreatening diseases. Particularly, for patients taking multiple medicines, 3D printing method could be explored to design a single dosage in which various drugs can be incorporated. Further 3D printing based personalized drug delivery system could also be investigated in chemotherapy of cancer patients with the added advantage of the reduction in adverse effects.

Conclusion:

In this article, we have reviewed 3D printing technology and its uses in personalized medicine. Further, we also discussed the different techniques and materials used in drug delivery based on 3D printing along with various applications of the technology.

Although a clear trend towards personalised fabrication is perceived, here we accentuate the merits and shortcomings of each technology, providing insights into aspects such as the efficiency of production, global supply, and logistics. Contemporary opportunities for 3DP in drug discovery and pharmaceutical development and manufacturing are unveiled, offering a forward-looking view on its potential uses as a digitised tool for personalised dispensing of drugs.
