A magnetic assembly approach to chiral superstructures

Intense Circularly Polarized Luminescence Induced by Chiral Supramolecular Assembly: The Importance of Intermolecular Electronic Coupling

Herein we report on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission originating from supramolecular chirality of organic microcrystals with a |glum| value up to 0.11. The microcrystals were prepared from highly emissive difluoroboron β-diketonate (BF2dbk) dyes R-1 or S-1 with chiral binaphthol (BINOL) skeletons. R-1 and S-1 exhibit undetectable CPL signals in solution but manifest intense CPL emission in their chiral microcrystals. The chiral superstructures induced by BINOL skeletons were confirmed by single-crystal XRD analysis. Spectral analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that intermolecular electronic coupling, mediated by the asymmetric stacking in the chiral superstructures, effectively alters excited-state electronic structures and facilitates electron transitions perpendicular to BF2bdk planes. The coupling increases cosθμ,m from 0.05 (monomer) to 0.86 (tetramer) and triggers intense optical activity of BF2bdk. The results demonstrate that optical activity of chromophores within assemblies can be regulated by both orientation and extent of intermolecular electronic couplings.

Spatiotemporally modulated full-polarized light emission for multiplexed optical encryption

Spatiotemporal control of full freedoms of polarized light emission is crucial in multiplexed optical computing, encryption and communication. Although recent advancements have been made in active emission or passive conversion of polarized light through solution-processed nanomaterials or metasurfaces, these design paths usually encounter limitations, such as small polarization degrees, low light utilization efficiency, limited polarization states, and lack of spatiotemporal control. Here, we addressed these challenges by integrating the spatiotemporal modulation of the LED device, the precise control and efficient polarization emission through nanomaterial assembly, and the programmable patterning/positioning using 3D printing. We achieved an extremely high degree of polarization for both linearly and circularly polarized emission from ultrathin inorganic nanowires and quantum nanorods thanks to the shear-force-induced alignment effect during the protruding of printing filaments. Real-time polarization modulation covering the entire Poincaré sphere can be conveniently obtained through the programming of the on-off state of each LED pixel. Further, the output polarization states can be encoded by an ordered chiral plasmonic film. Our device provides an excellent platform for multiplexing spatiotemporal polarization information, enabling visible light communication with an exceptionally elevated level of physical layer security and multifunctional encrypted displays that can encode both 2D and 3D information.

Chiral Transfer and Evolution in Cysteine Induced Cobalt Superstructures

Chiral organic additives have unveiled the extraordinary capacity to form chiral inorganic superstructures, however, complex hierarchical structures have hindered the understanding of chiral transfer and growth mechanisms. This study introduces a simple hydrothermal synthesis method for constructing chiral cobalt superstructures with cysteine, demonstrating specific recognition of chiral molecules and outstanding electrocatalytic activity. The mild preparation conditions allow in situ tracking of chirality evolution in the chiral cobalt superstructure, offering unprecedented insights into the chiral transfer and amplification mechanism. The resulting superstructures exhibit a universal formation process applicable to other metal oxides, extending the understanding of chiral superstructure evolution. This work contributes not only to the fundamental understanding of chirality in self-assembled structures but also provides a versatile method for designing chiral inorganic nanomaterials with remarkable molecular recognition and electrocatalytic capabilities.

Colorimetric sensing for translational applications: from colorants to mechanisms

Colorimetric sensing offers instant reporting via visible signals. Versus labor-intensive and instrument-dependent detection methods, colorimetric sensors present advantages including short acquisition time, high throughput screening, low cost, portability, and a user-friendly approach. These advantages have driven substantial growth in colorimetric sensors, particularly in point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. Rapid progress in nanotechnology, materials science, microfluidics technology, biomarker discovery, digital technology, and signal pattern analysis has led to a variety of colorimetric reagents and detection mechanisms, which are fundamental to advance colorimetric sensing applications. This review first summarizes the basic components (e.g., color reagents, recognition interactions, and sampling procedures) in the design of a colorimetric sensing system. It then presents the rationale design and typical examples of POC devices, e.g., lateral flow devices, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, and wearable sensing devices. Two highlighted colorimetric formats are discussed: combinational and activatable systems based on the sensor-array and lock-and-key mechanisms, respectively. Case discussions in colorimetric assays are organized by the analyte identities. Finally, the review presents challenges and perspectives for the design and development of colorimetric detection schemes as well as applications. The goal of this review is to provide a foundational resource for developing colorimetric systems and underscoring the colorants and mechanisms that facilitate the continuing evolution of POC sensors.

DNA-mediated assembly of Au bipyramids into anisotropic light emitting kagome superlattices

Colloidal crystal engineering with DNA allows one to design diverse superlattices with tunable lattice symmetry, composition, and spacing. Most of these structures follow the complementary contact model, maximizing DNA hybridization on building blocks and producing relatively close-packed lattices. Here, low-symmetry kagome superlattices are assembled from DNA-modified gold bipyramids that can engage only in partial DNA surface matching. The bipyramid dimensions and DNA length can be engineered for two different superlattices with rhombohedral unit cells, including one composed of a periodic stacking of kagome lattices. Enabled by the partial facet alignment, the kagome lattices exhibit lattice distortion, bipyramid twisting, and planar chirality. When conjugated with Cy-5 dyes, the kagome lattices serve as cavities with high-density optical states and large Purcell factors along lateral directions, leading to strong dipole radiation along the z axis and facet-dependent light emission. Such complex optical properties make these materials attractive for lasers, displays, and quantum sensing constructs.

Induced Huge Optical Activity in Nanoplatelet Superlattice

Chiral superstructures with unique chiroptical properties that are not inherent in the individual units are essential in applications such as 3D displays, spintronic devices, biomedical sensors, and beyond. Generally, chiral superstructures are obtained by tedious procedures exploring various physical and chemical forces to break spatial symmetry during the self-assembly of discrete nanoparticles. In contrast, we herein present a simple and efficient approach to chiral superstructures by intercalating small chiral molecules into preformed achiral superstructures. As a model system, the chiral CdSe nanoplatelet (NPL) superlattice exhibits a giant and tunable optical activity with the highest g-factor reaching 3.09 × 10-2 to the excitonic transition of the NPL superlattice, nearly 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the corresponding separated chiral NPLs. The theoretical analysis reveals that the chiral deformation in the NPL superlattice induced by the chiral perturbation of the small chiral molecules is critical to the observed huge optical activity. We anticipate that this research lays a foundation for understanding and applying chiral inorganic nanosystems.

Mechanically Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Liquid Crystal-Templated Chiral Perovskite Quantum Dots

Endowing perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) offers great promise for innovative chiroptical applications, but the existing strategies are inefficient in acquiring stimuli-responsive flexible chiral perovskite films with large, tunable dissymmetry factor (glum) and long-term stability. Here, we report a strategy for the design and synthesis of luminescent cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (Lumin-CLCE) films with mechanically tunable CPL, which is enabled by liquid crystal-templated chiral self-assembly and in situ covalent cross-linking of judiciously designed photopolymerizable CsPbX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) PQD nanomonomers into the elastic polymer networks. The resulting Lumin-CLCE films showcase circularly polarized structural color in natural light and noticeable CPL with a maximum glum value of up to 1.5 under UV light. The manipulation of CPL intensity and rotation direction is achieved by controlling the self-assembled helicoidal nanostructure and the handedness of soft helices. A significant breakthrough lies in the achievement of a reversible, mechanically tunable perovskite-based CPL switch activated by biaxial stretching, which enables flexible, dynamic anti-counterfeiting labels capable of decrypting preset information in specific polarization states. This work can provide new insights for the development of advanced chiral perovskite materials and their emerging applications in information encryption, flexible 3D displays, and beyond.

Dynamic Transformation of High-Architectural Nanocrystal Superlattices upon Solvent Molecule Exposure

The cluster-based body-centered-cubic superlattice (cBCC SL) represents one of the most complicated structures among reported nanocrystal assemblies, comprised of 72 truncated tetrahedral quantum dots per unit cell. Our previous report revealed that truncated tetrahedral quantum dots within cBCC SLs possessed highly controlled translational and orientational order owing to an unusual energetic landscape based on the balancing of entropic and enthalpic contributions during the assembly process. However, the cBCC SL's structural transformability and mechanical properties, uniquely originating from such complicated nanostructures, have yet to be investigated. Herein, we report that cBCC SLs can undergo dynamic transformation to face-centered-cubic SLs in response to post-assembly molecular exposure. We monitored the dynamic transformation process using in situ synchrotron-based small-angle X-ray scattering, revealing a dynamic transformation involving multiple steps underpinned by interactions between incoming molecules and TTQDs' surface ligands. Furthermore, our mechanistic study demonstrated that the precise configuration of TTQDs' ligand molecules in cBCC SLs was key to their high structural transformability and unique jelly-like soft mechanical properties. While ligand molecular configurations in nanocrystal SLs are often considered minor features, our findings emphasize their significance in controlling weak van der Waals interactions between nanocrystals within assembled SLs, leading to previously unremarked superstructural transformability and unique mechanical properties. Our findings promote a facile route toward further creation of soft materials, nanorobotics, and out-of-equilibrium assemblies based on nanocrystal building blocks.

True and False Chirality in Chiral Magnetic Nanoparticles

Determining the true or false chirality of a system is essential for the design of advanced chiral materials and for improving their applications. Typically, a magnetic field would cause false optical activity in the chiral material system, thus confusing the true chirality's influence. Here, we provide a simple way to uncover the true and false chirality in chiral ferrimagnetic nanoparticles (FNPs) by using the gel as a rigid frame. The remnant local magnetic field of the FNP gel can be easily adjusted by an external magnetic field or by controlling the concentration of the FNPs. Moreover, the potential application of the FNP gel is detected by induced magnetic circularly polarized luminescence. This work provides deep insight into the true and false chirality in magnetic nanosystems and offers a strategy to construct new optic elements with an adjustable local magnetic field.

Self-Assembled Ring-Based Complex Colloidal Particles by Lock-And-Key Interaction and Their Self-Assembly into Unusual Colloidal Crystals

Creating hierarchical crystalline materials using simple colloids or nanoparticles is very challenging, as it is usually impossible to achieve hierarchical structures without nonhierarchical colloidal interactions. Here, we present a hierarchical self-assembly (SA) route that employs colloidal rings and anisotropic colloidal particles to form complex colloids and uses them as building blocks to form unusual colloidal columnar liquid crystals or crystals. This route is realized by designing hierarchical SA driving forces that is controlled by the colloidal shape and shape-dependent depletion attraction. Depletion-induced lock-and-key interaction is the first driving force, which ensures a high efficiency (>90%) to load colloidal particles of other shapes such as spheres, spherocylinders, and oblate ellipsoids into rings, providing high-quality building blocks. Their SA into ordered superstructures has to require a second driving force such as higher volume fraction and/or stronger depletion attraction. As a result, unusual hierarchical colloidal (liquid) crystals, which have previously been difficult to fabricate by simple binary assembly, can be achieved. This work presents a significant advancement in the field of hierarchical SA, demonstrating a promising strategy for constructing many unprecedented crystalline materials by the SA route.

Tri-mode Responses to Reactive Oxygen Species In Vivo by Chiral Vanadium-Based Nanoparticles

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are closely associated with the redox balance of the physiological environment, and monitoring ROS can aid in the early diagnosis of many diseases, including cancer. In this study, chiral vanadium trioxide/vanadium nitride (V2O3/VN) nanoparticles (NPs) modified with an organic dye (cyanine 3 [Cy3]) were prepared for ROS sensing. Chiral V2O3/VN NPs were prepared with the "ligand-induced chirality" strategy and showed a g-factor of up to 0.12 at a wavelength of 512 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this g-factor is the highest value of all chiral ceramic nanomaterials. The very high g-factor of the nanoprobe confers very high sensitivity, because the higher g-factor, the higher sensitivity. In the presence of ROS, V3+ in the chiral V2O3/VN nanoprobe undergoes a redox reaction to form V2O5, reducing the circular dichroism and absorbance signals, whereas the fluorescence signal of Cy3 is restored. With this nanoprobe, the limits of detection for the circular dichroic and fluorescence signals in living cells are 0.0045 nmol/106 and 0.018 nmol/106 cells, respectively. This chiral nanoprobe can also monitor ROS levels in vivo by fluorescence. This strategy provides an innovative approach to the detection of ROS and is expected to promote the wider application of chiral nanomaterials for biosensing.

Magnetic assembly of plasmonic chiral superstructures with dynamic chiroptical responses

Plasmonic nanostructures exhibiting dynamically tunable chiroptical responses hold great promise for broad applications such as sensing, catalysis, and enantioselective analysis. Despite the successful fabrication of chiral structures through diverse templates, creating dynamic chiroptical materials with fast and reversible responses to external stimuli is still challenging. This work showcases reversible magnetic assembly and active tuning of plasmonic chiral superstructures by introducing a chiral magnetic field from a cubic permanent magnet. Manipulating the strength and direction of the magnetic field controls both the chiral arrangement and plasmonic coupling of the nanoparticle assembly, enabling fast and reversible tunability in not only the handedness of the superstructures but also the spectral characteristics of their chiroptical properties. The dynamic tunability further enables the fabrication of color-changing optical devices based on the optical rotatory dispersion effect, showcasing their potential for application in anti-counterfeiting and stress sensors.

Magnetic Assembly of Eu-Doped NaYF4 Nanorods for Field-Responsive Linearly and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Colloidal assembly has emerged as an effective avenue for achieving polarized light emission. Here, we showcase the efficacy and versatility of the magnetic colloidal assembly in enabling both linearly and circularly polarized luminescence. Colloidal europium-doped NaYF4 nanorods with surface-bound Fe3O4 nanoparticles are magnetically assembled into linear or chiral superstructures using corresponding fields created in permanent magnets. In a uniform magnetic field generated by opposing poles, the assemblies exhibit photoluminescence with intensity tunable in response to the magnetic field direction, which is higher when the nanorods are perpendicular to light propagation than when they are parallel. The obtained superstructures display strong linearly polarized luminescence when the nanorods are aligned vertically, exhibiting a high degree of polarization up to 0.61. In a quadrupole chiral field generated by permanent magnets, the assemblies emit left-handed or right-handed polarized light depending on the position of the sample placement, attaining a g-factor of 0.04. Furthermore, the superstructures immobilized in a hydrogel film are found to retain their chirality, exhibiting opposite chiroptical responses depending on the sample orientation. The magnetic colloidal assembly approach facilitates the convenient and efficient generation of polarized light emissions from nonmagnetic luminescent materials, thus creating opportunities for tailoring light behavior in developing innovative optoelectronic devices.

Materials-Driven Soft Wearable Bioelectronics for Connected Healthcare

In the era of Internet-of-things, many things can stay connected; however, biological systems, including those necessary for human health, remain unable to stay connected to the global Internet due to the lack of soft conformal biosensors. The fundamental challenge lies in the fact that electronics and biology are distinct and incompatible, as they are based on different materials via different functioning principles. In particular, the human body is soft and curvilinear, yet electronics are typically rigid and planar. Recent advances in materials and materials design have generated tremendous opportunities to design soft wearable bioelectronics, which may bridge the gap, enabling the ultimate dream of connected healthcare for anyone, anytime, and anywhere. We begin with a review of the historical development of healthcare, indicating the significant trend of connected healthcare. This is followed by the focal point of discussion about new materials and materials design, particularly low-dimensional nanomaterials. We summarize material types and their attributes for designing soft bioelectronic sensors; we also cover their synthesis and fabrication methods, including top-down, bottom-up, and their combined approaches. Next, we discuss the wearable energy challenges and progress made to date. In addition to front-end wearable devices, we also describe back-end machine learning algorithms, artificial intelligence, telecommunication, and software. Afterward, we describe the integration of soft wearable bioelectronic systems which have been applied in various testbeds in real-world settings, including laboratories that are preclinical and clinical environments. Finally, we narrate the remaining challenges and opportunities in conjunction with our perspectives.

Multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials: recent advances in synthesis and applications

Chiral hybrid nanomaterials with multiple components provide a highly promising approach for the integration of desired chirality with other functionalities into one single nanoscale entity. However, precise control over multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials to enable their application in diverse and complex scenarios remains a significant challenge. In this review, our focus lies on the recent advances in the preparation and application of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials, with an emphasis on synthetic strategies and emerging applications. We first systematically elucidate preparation methods for multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials encompassing the following approaches: physical deposition approach, galvanic replacement reaction, chiral molecule-mediated, chiral heterostructure, circularly polarized light-mediated, magnetically induced, and chiral assembly. Furthermore, we highlight emerging applications of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials in chirality sensing, enantioselective catalysis, and biomedicine. Finally, we provide an outlook on the challenges and opportunities in the field of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials. In-depth investigations of these multicomponent chiral hybrid nanomaterials will pave the way for the rational design of chiral hybrid nanostructures with desirable functionalities for emerging technological applications.

Novel Chiral CsPbBr3 Metal Halide Perovskite Magic-Sized Clusters and Metal Halide Molecular Clusters with Achiral Ligands

We have synthesized inherently chiral cesium lead halide perovskite magic-sized clusters (PMSCs) and ligand-assisted metal halide molecular clusters (MHMCs) using the achiral ligands octanoic acid (OCA) and octylamine (OCAm). UV-vis electronic absorption was used to confirm characteristic absorption bands while circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy was utilized to determine their chiroptical activity in the 412-419 and 395-405 nm regions, respectively. In contrast, the larger sized counterpart of PMSCs, namely, perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), do not show chirality. The inherent chirality of the clusters is tentatively attributed to a twisted chiral layered structure, defect-induced chiral structure, or twisted Pb-Br octahedra.

Mechanisms of chiral plasmonics-Scattering, absorption, and photoluminescence

Chirality is a concept that one object is not superimposable on its mirror image by translation and rotation. In particular, chiral plasmonics have been widely investigated due to their excellent optical chiral properties, and have led to numerous applications such as optical polarizing element etc. In this study, we develop a model based on the concept of the interaction between harmonic oscillators to investigate and explain the optical chiral mechanisms of strongly coupled metal nanoparticles (MNPs). The chirality of the scattering, absorption, and photoluminescence spectra are carefully discussed in detail. The results show that the chirality of the system originates not only from the orientations of the MNPs, but also from the different eigen parameters between them. Specifically, the derived three factors contribute to the chirality: the symmetry, the coupling strength, and the coherent superposition of the emitted electric field. This work provides a deeper understanding on the chiral plasmonics and may guide relevant applications in theory.

Dual-Responsive Fe3O4@Polyaniline Chiral Superstructures for Information Encryption

Incorporating stimuli-responsive mechanisms into chiral assemblies of nanostructures offers numerous opportunities to create optical materials capable of dynamically modulating their chiroptical properties. In this study, we demonstrate the formation of chiral superstructures by assembling Fe3O4@polyaniline hybrid nanorods by using a gradient magnetic field. The resulting superstructures exhibit a dual response to changes in both the magnetic field and solution pH, enabling dynamic regulation of the position, intensity, and sign of its circular dichroism peaks. Such responsiveness allows for convenient control over the optical rotatory dispersion properties of the assemblies, which are further integrated into the design of a chiroptical switch that can display various colors and patterns when illuminated with light of different wavelengths and polarization states. Finally, an optical information encryption system is constructed through the controlled assembly of the hybrid nanorods to showcase the potential opportunities for practical applications brought by the resulting responsive chiral superstructures.
