Abstract
The Helicobacter genus actually comprises 46 validly published species divided into two main clades: gastric and enterohepatic Helicobacters. These bacteria colonize alternative sites of the digestive system in animals and humans, and contribute to inflammation and cancers. In humans, Helicobacter infection is mainly related to H. pylori, a gastric pathogen infecting more than half of the world's population, leading to chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa that can evolve into two types of gastric cancers: gastric adenocarcinomas and gastric MALT lymphoma. In addition, H. pylori but also non-H. pylori Helicobacter infection has been associated with many extra-gastric malignancies. This review focuses on H. pylori and its role in gastric cancers and extra-gastric diseases, as well as malignancies induced by non-H. pylori Helicobacters. Their different virulence factors and their involvement in carcinogenesis is discussed. This review highlights the importance of both gastric and enterohepatic Helicobacters in gastrointestinal and liver cancers.

Abstract
Rodents can cause major problems through spreading various diseases to animals and humans. The two main species of rodents most commonly found on farms around the world are the house mouse (Mus musculus) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus). Both species are omnivorous and can breed year-round under favourable conditions. This review describes the occurrence of pathogens in rodents on specialist pig and chicken farms, which are usually closed units with a high level of bio-security. However, wild rodents may be difficult to exclude completely, even from these sites, and can pose a risk of introducing and spreading pathogens. This article reviews current knowledge regarding rodents as a hazard for spreading disease on farms. Most literature available regards zoonotic pathogens, while the literature regarding pathogens that cause disease in farm animals is more limited.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In dogs, the gastric Helicobacter spp. have been well studied, but there is little information regarding the other parts of the alimentary system. We sought to determine the spatial distribution of Helicobacter spp. in the gastrointestinal tract and the hepatobiliary system of dogs using culture-independent methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS Samples of stomach, duodenum, ileum, cecum, colon, pancreas, liver, and bile from six dogs were evaluated for Helicobacter spp. by genus, gastric, and enterohepatic Helicobacter spp. Polymerase chain reaction, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). RESULTS In the stomach, Helicobacter spp. DNA was detected in all six dogs, with H. bizzozeronii and H. felis identified by specific polymerase chain reaction. Helicobacter organisms were localized within the surface mucus, the lumen of gastric glands, and inside parietal cells. The small intestine harbored gastric and enterohepatic Helicobacter spp. DNA/antigen in low amounts. In the cecum and colon, Helicobacter spp. DNA, with highest similarity to H. bilis/flexispira taxon 8, H. cinaedi, and H. canis, was detected in all six dogs. Helicobacter organisms were localized at the mucosal surface and within the crypts. Gastric Helicobacter spp. DNA was detected occasionally in the large intestine, but no gastric Helicobacter spp. were present in clone libraries or detected by FISH. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that in addition to the stomach, the large intestine of dogs is also abundantly colonized by Helicobacter spp. Additional studies are necessary to investigate the association between enterohepatic Helicobacter spp. and presence of intestinal inflammatory or proliferative disorders in dogs.

Abstract
Helicobacter infections cause chronic gastroenteritis in humans and several animal species. We recently discovered a new Helicobacter (H. hepaticus) that is the etiological agent of a unique chronic active hepatitis in mice. Natural infection appeared to be acquired early in life in enzootically infected colonies. Liver lesions arose as focal necrosis and focal nonsuppurative inflammation by 1 to 4 months of age in susceptible mouse strains. By 6 to 8 months, extensive liver involvement included hepatocytomegaly, bile ductular (oval cell) hyperplasia, and cholangitis. There was an age-related increase in proliferating cell nuclear antigen hepatocyte nuclear labeling index. The bacteria were usually found within bile canaliculi as determined by ultrastructural evaluation of liver lesions, the Steiner modification of the Warthin-Starry stain and immunohistochemistry with a rabbit antibody to Helicobacter pylori. Naturally infected mice showed an age-related increase in serum IgG antibodies to Helicobacter hepaticus proteins. The disease was experimentally reproduced by intraperitoneal injection of liver suspensions from affected livers or bacteria cultivated in vitro. The earliest lesions of the experimental disease appeared 4 weeks after injection. The course of spontaneous and experimental infection was slow and insidious and resulted in high titers of antibodies to bacterial proteins. This chronic bacterial infection represents a new model of chronic liver disease.

Abstract
The competitive exclusion (CE) product (Broilact) which is effective against Salmonellas, was found to be inactive against campylobacters. Microecological concepts were applied in the search of a new competitive flora and two novel strains ('K-bacteria') were isolated. These strains resembled campylobacters but differed from them in morphology, enzyme profiles (API), cellular fatty acid profiles and when tested with a ribosomal RNA hybridization probe (Gene-Trak). Two-week laboratory trials on broiler chickens showed that CE treatment may protect the birds against campylobacters but revealed the need for facultatively anaerobic bacteria in establishing a protective flora. A 5-week pilot scale trial was carried out. The trial involved 1800 newly hatched chicks in 30 groups. K-bacteria and Broilact, which provided the necessary facultatively anaerobic bacteria, were administered to some of the birds in the first drinking water. A seeder bird technique was used to challenge experimental and control birds with Campylobacter jejuni biotype 2 (broiler origin). Three seeder birds were placed in each group of 60 birds. Groups were sampled weekly for campylobacters and finally at the slaughterhouse. From each group, the caecal contents of two birds were examined quantitatively for campylobacters. The performance of the birds was also monitored during the trial. The results showed a 1.5 week delay in the onset of campylobacter infection in treated chicks and a consistently lower level of colonization in comparison with control birds. At slaughter, levels of carriage in caecal contents of treated birds were 1.5-2.0 log10 units lower than those of controls, despite apparent stress from harvesting and transportation. The treatment had no economically important effects on the performance of the birds during rearing.

Abstract
The microflora in the gastrointestinal tracts of wild vervet and samango monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops and C. mitis, respectively) were studied, using fermentation acid analysis, electron microscopy, and culturing methods. The diets of the two species of monkey differ considerably, with that of the samango including a greater proportion of cellulose-rich leaf material, and this is reflected in the microflora. Volatile fatty acid measurements along the gut of both species showed that these end products of bacterial metabolism were concentrated in the cecum and colon. Electron microscopy indicated that morphologically similar bacteria were present in the cecum and colon of both species, but the samango possessed a distinct stomach microflora. Bacteria in the lumina of the four main regions of the gut of the monkeys (stomach, small intestine, cecum, and colon) were plated on a number of anaerobic media (Mann, Rogosa, and Sharp; clostridial basal; and complex media). The cecum and colon were found to contain higher numbers of microbes per gram (wet weight) of gut content than the stomach and small intestine. Microbial isolates were able to catabolize carboxymethyl cellulose and other polymers. This may aid the monkeys, particularly samangos, in the digestion of fibrous dietary components such as leaves.

Abstract
Gram-stained sections prepared in a microtome-cryostat and examined by light microscopy confirmed the observation with scanning electron microscopy made by other workers that microbes inhabit a zone adjacent to the mucosal surface of the proximal colon of mice. Microbes in the midcolon, in contrast, are restricted to the fecal pellets occupying the intestinal lumen.

Abstract
Lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27) from Vibrio marinus MP-1 was purified 15-fold and ammonium activated. The optimum pH for pyruvate reduction was 7.4. Maximum lactate dehydrogenase activity occurred at 10 to 15 degrees C, and none occurred at 40 degrees C. The crude-extract enzyme was stable between 15 and 20 degrees C and lost 50% of its activity after 60 min at 45 degrees C. The partially purified enzyme was stable between 8 and 15 degrees C and lost 50% of its activity after 60 min at 30 degrees C. The thermal stability of lactate dehydrogenase was increased by mercaptoethanol, with 50% remaining activity at 42 degrees C.

Abstract
The review will encompass the following points: A brief introduction to the role of the gut flora in the toxicology of ingested food components, contaminants, and additives, including known pathways of activation and detoxication of foreign compounds and the implication of the flora in enterohepatic circulation of xenobiotics. The advantages and disadvantages of the various methods of studying the gut flora (classical bacteriological techniques, metabolic and enzymological methods) will be critically discussed with special reference to their relevance to dietary, toxicological, and biochemical studies. Sources of nutrients available to the gut flora will be described including host products (mucus, sloughed mucosal cells, hormones, proteins) and exogenous nutrients derived from diet. An account of the problems involved in studies of dietary modification with special reference to the use of stock laboratory animal diets, purified diets, and human dietary studies. The influence of dietary modification on the flora will be assessed on the basis of changes in numbers and types of bacteria and their metabolic activity, drawing on data from human and animal studies. The effects of manipulation of the quantity and quality of protein, fat, and indigestible residues (fiber) of the diet will be described together with their possible implications for toxicity of ingested compounds.

Abstract
Epidemic diarrhoea was observed in approximately 2,000 of 6,700 sheep on 9 farms. The disease, called weaner colitis, caused mortality of 1%, while morbidity varied from 20 to 75%. Colon contents from affected sheep were inoculated into 17 sheep, 13 of which developed diarrhoea 5 to 7 days after inoculation. Naturally and experimentally infected sheep had mild, erosive typhlitis and colitis. Microscopic examination of washed scrapings of colonic mucosa from all affected sheep revealed masses of curved bacteria that were not seen in controls. Electron microscopic examination showed similar bacteria adherent to colonic epithelium of an experimentally infected sheep. Curved, motile bacteria were isolated from 2 naturally occurring cases. One isolate was inoculated into 9 sheep, 2 of which developed diarrhoea. The other isolate was given to 4 sheep without observable effect. The curved bacteria grew only on media containing blood, in an atmosphere of approximately 10% air, 10% CO2 and 80% H2. They were Gram-negative, with a polar flagellum at one or both ends, they did not ferment glucose or give a positive catalase reaction. It is suggested that these bacteria are a new Campylobacter species and that they play a major role in the aetiology of weaner colitis.

Abstract
An allochthonous population of spiral-shaped bacteria was found colonizing the surfaces of the colonic mucosa of rats after they had been given magnesium sulphate (MgSO4)-induced diarrhea. These organisms were rarely seen in normal control rats and were not displaced when the treatment was ceased, remaining associated with the tissue for periods of up to 180 days. Similar bacteria were also found when specific pathogen-free rats, lacking mucosa-associated populations, were inoculated with homogenized rat intestine from conventional animals. Light and electron microscopic observations showed that the organisms were attached to the surface of the colon, orientated at right angles to the tissue, with one end inserted into the microvillus border. This is the first report of long-term colonization, following perturbation of the gut ecosystem, of a site on the gastrointestinal mucosa not normally associated with bacteria. The ultrastructure and mode of attachment of these organisms were very similar to that of spiral-shaped bacteria known to associate with the colonic mucosa in monkeys and man.

Abstract
Under certain circumstances--invasion of adhesive germs, abundant reproduction of the germs at the mucosa, a lowered resistance of the body--the adhesive flora can become a pathogenic factor itself. All hitherto known researchers point out that, in this connection, adhesions at the small intestinal wall is of main importance, as could be shown by our experiment with gnotobiotic rats, too. From the results of our experiments regarding the adhesion mechanisms, we conclude that the possibilities of prophylaxis and therapy of gastrointestinal disturbances induced by microbial effects could be extended by means of aimed inhibition of such adhesion forces.

Abstract
Spiral-shaped bacteria with a distinctive morphology were isolated from the intestinal mucosa of rats and mice on a campylobacter selective medium using microaerophilic incubation. These bacteria have been shown by other authors to be present in the intestinal tracts of several animal species but have not been cultured previously. The results of electron microscopic examinations and biochemical testing have shown that these organisms do not correspond to any known genus. Colonization experiments with pure cultures in gnotobiotic rodents have shown these bacteria to be mucosa associated, with a particular affinity for intestinal crypts. The pattern of colonization of the intestinal crypts in gnotobiotes known to be free of other mucosa-associated organisms differed from the colonization occurring in conventional animals that possess a normal mucosa-associated flora.

Abstract
An unusual case of intestinal spirochaetosis is described. The rectum of a 34-year-old male, suffering from Crohn's disease and ankylosing spondylitis, was heavily infested by spirochaetes. Both absorptive and goblet cells were colonized. Spirochaetes were found not only on the luminal surface of these cells, but also within the cytoplasm, in occasional macrophages within the lamina propria and, even more surprisingly, within the occasional Schwann cell. The significance of these findings is discussed.
